Kennedy Rain #4

A Token of Blood and Betrayal

Rate this book
She made a deal with a fey. Now, she’s determined to break it.

Kennedy thought she’d finally found her footing in the paranormal world, but a fateful discovery threatens the peace she’s tried so hard to build. Hidden within her mother’s jewelry box lies a rare artifact linked to Garion, the Rain’s bartender and Kennedy’s friend. It’s also the object Kennedy vowed to give to a fey king in exchange for his previous “help.”

Handing over the token feels like a betrayal, but breaking a bargain is no small matter. Kennedy needs advice, so she turns to her small circle of allies, including Blake, the relentless werewolf she can’t let herself fall for.

With her options running out, Kennedy must navigate around the rules of the paranormal world while also solidifying Jared’s position as the new master of the local vampire compound. She’s pulled deep into cutthroat politics, and once again, she faces an impossible surrender the token and betray her friend, or defy the fey and risk unimaginable consequences.

Sandy Williams writes urban fantasy and science fiction, both with a strong shot of romance. She's a fan of the enemies-to-lovers trope and loves books with high stakes and fantastical settings. When she's not being a bookworm, she loves playing board and card games like Dominion, Quacks of Quedlinburg, Dungeon Petz, etc (but not Goblins because she ALWAYS loses that damn game).

❗️❗️Cliffhanger

This was a quick and entertaining read, and I flew through the book. Still, I feel that the main plot did not progresss that much.

Just like in the previous book, there is a lot of action and twists. Poor Kenendy can’t catch a break, and I honestly don’t know how she can still keep going on. Between the attacks on her person, her plans to rescue her friends, and the hotel heading straight toward bankrupcy, she barely has the time to sleep and eat.

While I enjoyed the fast pace and the action, I feel that there was too much going on at the same time, and the author couldn’t develop the sub-plots enough because of that. Jasmine’s murder still hasn’t been elucided, and they didn’t even search for her murderer in this book. Problems keep piling on for Kennedy, but she doesn’t have the time to fully solve them, so she is a little involved in everything, but not able to close any open case. We don’t know what Satine will do, or when she will retaliate, Jasmine’s murderer is still free, Lehr is still pressuring Kennedy into caving to his demands, the hotel is still risking bankrupcy, Crusco and Melissa’s freedom are still an issue…

Things between Kennedy and Blake are becoming more interesting, and Blake is showing that he can be more than just Lehr’s lackey. He still has to obey Lehr’s orders and his loyalty is to the pack, but we can see in this book how he struggles when he is put in a position where he needs to choose between Kennedy and the pack, and he almost defied Lehr because of his feelings for Kennedy. I do hope they will have a happy ending, because Blake is growing on me, and poor Kennedy deserves some happiness and quiet time once she manages to take control over the hotel and her life again.

The book does end with an interesting cliffhanger, and I am curious to see where this is going. With the way things are now, there could be more angst in the next book, which I am not opposed to.

Overall, I enjoyed this book a lot, just like the rest of the series. It is a quick read with magic, action, vampires and werewolves, and it's easy to read just one more chapter until you reach the end. Now though, I am wondering; how many books are planned for this series? I thought it was a trilogy, then assumed there was one final book when I finished the 3rd book, and now this one ends with a cliffhanger too! I hope we won't have to wait over a year for the next book. 🤞

*Thoughts*

A Token of Blood and Betrayal is the 4th installment in author Sandy Williams' Kennedy Rain series. A Token of Blood and Betrayal picks up right where Fused in Earth and Stone, where Kennedy Rain—a human woman thrust into the supernatural underbelly after inheriting her family's paranormal ties—has been scraping together a fragile sense of stability. Running a bar that serves as neutral ground for vampires, werewolves, and fey alike, where they can be human just for a short time, Kennedy has learned to navigate bargains, betrayals, and blood oaths with a mix of grit and guarded optimism.

A Token of Blood and Betrayal by Sandy Williams is the 4thrd book in her wonderful Kennedy Rain series. Refresher: Kennedy Rain, our heroine, is in sole control of the Rain Hotel. What makes the Rain Hotel unique?   The hotel is a null zone for paranormals, with a treaty that has been in effect for hundreds of years; a place to recover, be at peace, or just time to relax with no pressure; a werewolf can avoid the full moon or a vampire can see the sun, or recover from an injury. The Werewolves and Vampires, plus some other unknown species take turns to come and stay at the hotel.

Kennedy thought she’d finally found her footing in the paranormal world, but a fateful discovery threatens the peace she’s tried so hard to build. With Deagan injured and unconscious, Kennedy makes sure that Deagan is taken to the Rain, to help his recovery. Kennedy needs advice, so she turns to her small circle of allies, including Blake, the werewolf who totally loves Kennedy.

When Jared (Vampire) is attacked by Satine, (who is evil), it is Nora who will run to help Jared, with Kennedy, Christian and eventually Blake to fight off Satine. Kennedy must navigate the rules of the paranormal world while also solidifying Jared’s position as the new master.  With help from Astrid (coven) and Thordis (who watches over her), things will drastically change. When everything falls apart, Kennedy finds herself, in extreme danger, especially from two people that were close to her.

What follows is a wonderful fun, tense and exciting story, with Kennedy in the middle of it all.  As we raced to the climax, with surprising twists that will change the game, as we have to wait til the next book to find a way to save Kennedy.  There was a lot of action from start to finish, which kept me glued to the book. A Token of Blood and Betrayal was terrific thriller. This was a great addition to the series, which was very well written by Sandy Williams.

I got this book early by ordering through the authors website.

This is another good install in the Kennedy Rain series and there was good character progression.

The books ends on a rather big cliffhanger which I am not a fan of in general, but there is a note the series will continue next year so hopefully it won’t be a very long wait.

I loved this series so much. But this book is disappointing to me.
Still following Kennedy Rain and her friends, still trying to understand the whole token thing, but the whole book felt dragging. The romance is too slow, the plot is not moving forward fast enough. The end and the cliffhanger were definitely a surprise but it felt like getting there could have been a lot faster.

Gah, my only issue with this book is that I wish it were longer! Sandy did such a fantastic job weaving in all the details and events from the previous books that you’re instantly caught up and ready to dive right in. So much happens that we hit the ground running and never slow down.

It felt so good to be back in Kennedy’s world and at The Rain. By this point, we all know Kennedy’s going to do what she wants and how she wants to do it, and it’s so entertaining watching everyone else finally just roll with it. Relationships were tested to their make-or-break point, and Kennedy finally lets her guard down enough for them to truly flourish.

There’s still a lot of ground to cover and plenty of loose ends to tie up, so buckle up… this next book is going to be a wild ride.

And that ending!!! So many questions!!! I need the next book now. Like now, Sandy!!
