As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

OMG, the LORE in this volume! We take a break from the current drama on Elbaf to look back 38 years to the “God Valley incident”. And, man, we are getting information about soooo much: Gold D. Roger and Garp’s relationship, why Gloriosa (aka Granny Nyan) left Amazon Lily, how Shakky and Rayleigh got together, Blackbeard’s origins, how Kuma got his devil fruit, how Dragon first got radicalized (enough to leave the marines), how young Shanks ended up with the Roger pirates, and more!
I didn’t think it was possible to dislike the World Government and the Celestial Dragons more, but DAMN! Shank’s dad is definitely on my “somebody please kill this SOB” list, maybe even higher than Judge ). And of course they not only hold these kinds of “games”, but specifically target . I was going to just throw in a “don’t worry guys, One Piece is just a silly pirate story, not political at all!” joke by echoing MelonTeee’s observation that the Roger pirates’ cook is a bearded guy called MARX. But then I recalled a bit at the end of the dedication to The River Has Roots which I just read, in which Amal El-Mohtar comments on how violence against Lebanon (now ongoing once again) has been justified by saying it ‘isn’t a country’. That’s exactly how non-affiliated countries are treated by the WG in One Piece; their residents are held to have no rights at all.
Honestly, even though it frustrates me as much as his pirate friends that wants to join the World Government so bad, I do get it; probably even more so than the Fishmen because he lives on the surface, he knows that non-affiliated islands are a target (even if inhabited by humans). Allying with a genocidal/imperialist power won’t bring long-term peace (if you join, they will inevitably use you as soldiers…or labor to get money to fund those wars), but it can buy short-term safety from the worst of what they could do. And, boy, do we see an example of that “worst” here! I found myself remembering Mihawk’s comment that he isn’t the kind of brute to hunt rabbits with a cannon – there meaning that he didn’t intend to go all-out against some cocky kid who thinks he’s all that just because he can use three swords. Does he know what kind of “rabbit hunt” happened here? Time will tell, I suppose.

On the positive side, I like that we have an answer for how to help Dory and Broggy (in the current timeline)! What you need is . I’d love to see Luffy figure that out and get some help from the Straw Hats’ own pair who could fight for a hundred years without actually hurting each other, if

Can I love this series any more? The answer is a resounding no.
At this point, I think every arc is just destined to outdo the last, and it's not even trying. Well, no, okay, that's unfair; each arc has their own unique mark that make each of them special, it's just that these last couple of arcs just are very intense, and that makes them feel more epic than any before, because of the weight of all the world building that they carry, and how flawlessly Oda executes each plot point.
What I can say without doubt, is that the last couple of arcs have felt more claustrophobic and impossible than any before. Elbaf, in particular feels like an insurmountable mountain, and is there a more fitting feeling for it?
Getting to know, really know, all these new characters has just given me more characters to love, because in a story with hundreds of characters that I already love, I definitely needed more; but, hey! Oda never misses the mark.
Can I love this series any more? The answer is a resounding no.

Como viene siendo habitual en el arco de Elbaf, otro tomo histórico, contándonos por fin el incidente de God Valley (nunca creí que pasaría lo que pasó) y el viaje de Rocks (personajazo). Eso sí, me hubiera gustado más desarrollo de los enfrentamientos, pero en esto confío en el anime.

ohh, is this how shamrock and shanks was brought up separately?? garling's people was trying to get them back from dragon, but dragon only managed to save shanks. he lost the baby BUT THE BABY FOUND HIS WAY TO ROGER.

omg, my heart kept racing throughout this volume. the chapters are insane.
mu is afraid of davy. mu turned rocks against his own people; rocks is cursed to end his bloodline. while facing roger and garp, rocks managed to let them know and pleaded them to end his life. I HAVE CHILLS. rocks was ultimately killed by mu’s people.
the world government sold the story of garp as the hero.
harald and rocks’ friendship ended abruptly like that. harald broke off his horns to atone for the sins of giants and to make sure the children of elbaph will be in peace, he’s willing to be a slave.
this is when dragon quit the navy.

Arc 33: Elbaph
ONE PIECE CHAPTER 1156
Long before the Great Pirate Era begin, there are certain 'idols' from the Kuja Pirates originated from Amazon Lily had roamed the sea. On that time, Kuja Pirates was led by the Amazon Lily Empress, Gloriosa (future Elder Nyon). She was helped by Tritoma (future Empress of Amazon Lily) and Shakky, the First Mate of the Kuja Pirates who her beauty can outshine Gloriosa. One day, they came across with Roger Pirates. Roger wants to take Shakky. Gloriosa likes Roger but Roger was fell in love more to Shakky. Suddenly, the Marines appeared and Garp was on the ship. Roger and Garp clashed while Kuja Pirates take the opportunity to escape. Rocks, Roger and Garp are three powerhouses that will shake the Great Pirate Era while Kuja Pirates name also not to be forgotten to be mentioned.
Back to Ida's Tavern in Elbaph, Loki attempted to sail to the sea but fail and almost drowned. He idolized Rocks and wants to be in his crew. Every time Rocks come to Elbaph to recruit Harald, Loki also tried to join the crew but failed. Rocks managed to conquer the Hachinosu Island and gathered many powerful pirates including Kyo the Wicked (future Silver Axe, Captain John and Barbell from the Fishman Island. Rocks wants two Devil Fruits and one of it is located in Elbaph. The fruit's true power will be unleashed if only Harald eats the fruit. Elbaph is the key to take down the Holy Land. The Rocks Pirate already fully formed and ready to take down the world.

In Foot Colony, Temple of the International Philanthropy Federation, Rocks Pirates are looting the treasure there. Edward Newgate open a way to escape by destroying the island with his Devil Fruit. The Marines arrived but Rocks Pirates faced all of them. In just 2 years of their formation, there are 16 documented raids, 76 sunken ships, 14 ports reduced to ash, 5 towns wiped off the map, 1 nation brought to ruin, 3 unprecedented violations of Article 18 of International Law and 25 criminal records quietly erased.
In Enishi, New World, the World Government is terrorizing the country there as of the country is non-affiliated nations that considered as lawless territory. King Harald wants to help them as they were the ones who helped Elbaph during the famine. Right now, Elbaph is in consideration to be a member of the World Government. King Harald refused to help World Government and attack them. The news spread fast about King Harald who terrorizing an innocent battleship. In Ida's Tavern, Rocks went to see Harald but Harald still have faith for Elbaph to be one of the member of the World Government. The news about Rocks want to recruit Harald raised a concern in the Navy HQ.
Another news, Shakky have been quit as a Captain of the Kuja Pirates. She wants to hide in the Hachinosu Island. There, she open the Shakky's Rip-off Bar. In Mary Geoise, the Five Elder are concerning to approve Harald's admission to be a member nation with one condition; an Elbaph warrior must kill Rocks.
ONE PIECE CHAPTER 1158
Roger and Rayleigh like the same woman, Shakky. As they know the Shakky's whereabout, they head to the Hachinosu Island. Roger Pirates arrived at the Hachinosu Island to see Shakky. There is a rule which is fight is forbidden in Shakky's bar. In the Realm of the Dead, Elbaph, Rocks is fighting King Harald. Rocks trying to convince King Harald to not follow World Government's order. King Harald doesn't want to follow Rocks to ensure his people safety. Then, the battle ended and their unorthodox friendship also ended.
In Mary Geoise, Saint Garling, the future Elder, have coming back from the hunt in a non-affiliated country. He then suggest to hold another hunt in 2 years in the God Valley. 39 years ago, a certain red-haired woman gave birth to a twin named Shanks and Shamrock.
ONE PIECE CHAPTER 1159
39 years ago, there is an intruder in Hachinosu Island. Don Marlon and the other pirates were killed and also Shakky was kidnapped. The news spread worldwide and resulting to dull environment and also the economy got impacted. A year later, Saint Garling come to the God Valley in the West Blue. He met his wife and his twin, Shanks and Shamrock. He killed his wife and let the preparation for the tournament begin. The Marines and the World Government already surrounded the island. They start to detaining people. Ivankov, Ginny and Kuma are among the slaves who being captured. Young Monkey D. Dragon is also there who served as a Marine cadet. He trying to oppose what the Marines and the World Government did in the God Valley.
A news about Shakky who is still alive and will be the main prize of the Celestial Dragon tournament in God Valley start to spread worldwide. There are also other prizes inclduing Devil Fruits. This news attract many pirates around the world including Rocks Pirates and Roger Pirates. They started to mobilize there. In the way, Rocks come across with King Harald who did not let Rocks passed. After a small talk, Rocks revealed something to King Harald. His real name is Davy D. Xebec from Davy Clan who the World Government trying to erase. 2 years ago, Rocks have a wife and a kid and right now all of them were in Rocks' hometown, God Valley. Rocks wants to take this opportunity to save his family and crush the Celestial Dragon and the World Government. The tournament begins.
ONE PIECE CHAPTER 1160
Teach's mother asked Dragon to save his son. The tournament begins and it is a race between the top family; Figarland, Bavette, Manmayer and Shepard. The events keep getting intense as Dragon start to disobey the Marine's and the World Government's orders. In the midst of the chaos Dragon saved Shanks and Shamrock. The pirates keep coming from every side of the island including Rocks Pirates and Roger Pirates. The God's Knights also start to assemble to fight the incoming pirates. Garp and his fleet also arrived at the God Valley. The full fledge war will rage on.
ONE PIECE CHAPTER 1161
Dragon running with both Shanks and Shamrock but suddenly he was attacked by the God's Knight, St. Maffey of the Stachels Family. He was accidentally saved by Newgate's attack. Garp also arrived at the scene and the Rocks Pirates fled from there. St. Maffey managed to get one of the babies while Dragon saved the other one. Saint Sommers when to see Shakky and intended to kill her. Rayleigh arrived to defeat him and saved Shakky.
ONE PIECE CHAPTER 1162
The fight between Rocks and Saint Garling start. He was then chased by the older Davy clan members who turned into demon. He also bring his wife Eris to be saved. Then, they part ways and will be met again in Lulusia. Roger Pirates was going to escape from the God Valley. In the prize storeroom, Ivankov and Kuma are gathering the Devil Fruits. Suddenly, Linlin appears and snatched the Devil Fruits. Kuma managed to eat one of the Devil Fruits. Linlin wants to give the Uo Uo no Mi to his son Katakuri but Kaido snatched it and eat it. He got the ability to transform into a dragon. Roger, Rocks and Garp all faced off in some place. Suddenly, Saint Saturn who is observing the incident join the battle. He transformed into Imu-influenced form.
ONE PIECE CHAPTER 1163
Saint Saturn going berserk and randomly attack the Marines. Xebec faced off Saint Saturn and once again faced off Imu. Xebec, Roger, Garp, Newgate, Linlin and Kaido used their attacks on Saint Saturn simultaneously. Saint Saturn regenerated back and release a tremendous Haki. Suddenly, Imu talk about Xebec's wife and son. Xebec trying to attack Imu but he was stabbed by Imu. Imu used Domi Reversi on Xebec.
Captain John is the user of the Jiki Jiki no Mi (now owned by Kidd). He trying to pull all the treasure for himself but he was defeated by Ganzui who is the user of the Bomu Bomu no Mi (now owned by Mr. 5 aka Gem).
ONE PIECE CHAPTER 1164
Xebec said the Davy D. Jones is the former King of the World but denied by Imu. Imu have targetting the giants of Elbaph. Imu wants to put an end to the Davy's dream. Xebec starting to lose his consciousness until Imu managed to get controlled of Xebec. Imu ordered Xebec to kill the Davy lineage which is his son and wife. He instantly defeated Kaido and Linlin. Newgate stood against Xebec and their attacks were clashed until one of the mountain of the God Valley was destroyed. Xebec continued his searching for his wife and son. In the nick of time, Kuma saved Eris and Teach. Imu then ordered Xebec to kill everyone in God Valley. Roger and Garp faced devil-influenced Xebec. Suddenly, they hear a Voice of All Things from Xebec to kill him.
ONE PIECE CHAPTER 1165
The legendary of the God Valley between Roger and Garp against Xebec starts. Another mountain of the God Valley was destroyed due to the battle. The Rocks Pirates members start to leave the island. Newgate meets Polo Graham, Captain of the Polo Pirates. At the end of the battle, Xebec still standing. Roger and Garp used their final attack to defeat Xebec. Aftermath of the incident, the World Government tried to cover the incident from the world. Even though the Rocks Pirates have been disbanded, Rocks have destablized the entire era and his legacy will continue to shake the world.
ONE PIECE CHAPTER 1166
Shamrock come to the battlefield and kill Xebec. Gaban and Rayleigh help Roger and Garp to escape. The God Valley is collapsing in leave no mark in the history. As Roger Pirates escape with a loot treasures, there is a baby Shanks in one of the chest. The incident was spread worldwide and only two main topics were highlighted; Rocks Pirates wiped out and Garp's heroism in God Valley. Dragon was imprisoned and wants to quit Marine. Garp help him to escape.
In Elbaph, Loki knows the news about Xebec's death. As for King Harald, he felt guilty to not lend Xebec a hand when he needs it. Hence, he will oppose a giant who does evil. King Harald went to Marineford to atone for his sins and all the past generations. He broke his horns as a gratitude for his atonement.

The pirates keep coming from every side of the island including Rocks Pirates and Roger Pirates. The God's Knights also start to assemble to fight the incoming pirates. Garp and his fleet also arrived at the God Valley. The full fledge war will rage on.
ONE PIECE CHAPTER 1161
Dragon running with both Shanks and Shamrock but suddenly he was attacked by the God's Knight, St. Maffey of the Stachels Family. He was accidentally saved by Newgate's attack. Garp also arrived at the scene and the Rocks Pirates fled from there. St. Maffey managed to get one of the babies while Dragon saved the other one. Saint Sommers when to see Shakky and intended to kill her. Rayleigh arrived to defeat him and saved Shakky.
ONE PIECE CHAPTER 1162
The fight between Rocks and Saint Garling start. He was then chased by the older Davy clan members who turned into demon. He also bring his wife Eris to be saved. Then, they part ways and will be met again in Lulusia. Roger Pirates was going to escape from the God Valley. In the prize storeroom, Ivankov and Kuma are gathering the Devil Fruits. Suddenly, Linlin appears and snatched the Devil Fruits. Kuma managed to eat one of the Devil Fruits. Linlin wants to give the Uo Uo no Mi to his son Katakuri but Kaido snatched it and eat it. He got the ability to transform into a dragon. Roger, Rocks and Garp all faced off in some place. Suddenly, Saint Saturn who is observing the incident join the battle. He transformed into Imu-influenced form.
ONE PIECE CHAPTER 1163
Saint Saturn going berserk and randomly attack the Marines. Xebec faced off Saint Saturn and once again faced off Imu. Xebec, Roger, Garp, Newgate, Linlin and Kaido used their attacks on Saint Saturn simultaneously. Saint Saturn regenerated back and release a tremendous Haki. Suddenly, Imu talk about Xebec's wife and son. Xebec trying to attack Imu but he was stabbed by Imu. Imu used Domi Reversi on Xebec.
Captain John is the user of the Jiki Jiki no Mi (now owned by Kidd). He trying to pull all the treasure for himself but he was defeated by Ganzui who is the user of the Bomu Bomu no Mi (now owned by Mr. 5 aka Gem).
ONE PIECE CHAPTER 1164
Xebec said the Davy D. Jones is the former King of the World but denied by Imu. Imu have targetting the giants of Elbaph. Imu wants to put an end to the Davy's dream. Xebec starting to lose his consciousness until Imu managed to get controlled of Xebec. Imu ordered Xebec to kill the Davy lineage which is his son and wife. He instantly defeated Kaido and Linlin. Newgate stood against Xebec and their attacks were clashed until one of the mountain of the God Valley was destroyed. Xebec continued his searching for his wife and son. In the nick of time, Kuma saved Eris and Teach. Imu then ordered Xebec to kill everyone in God Valley. Roger and Garp faced devil-influenced Xebec. Suddenly, they hear a Voice of All Things from Xebec to kill him.
ONE PIECE CHAPTER 1165
The legendary of the God Valley between Roger and Garp against Xebec starts. Another mountain of the God Valley was destroyed due to the battle. The Rocks Pirates members start to leave the island. Newgate meets Polo Graham, Captain of the Polo Pirates. At the end of the battle, Xebec still standing. Roger and Garp used their final attack to defeat Xebec. Aftermath of the incident, the World Government tried to cover the incident from the world. Even though the Rocks Pirates have been disbanded, Rocks have destablized the entire era and his legacy will continue to shake the world.
ONE PIECE CHAPTER 1166
Shamrock come to the battlefield and kill Xebec. Gaban and Rayleigh help Roger and Garp to escape. The God Valley is collapsing in leave no mark in the history. As Roger Pirates escape with a loot treasures, there is a baby Shanks in one of the chest. The incident was spread worldwide and only two main topics were highlighted; Rocks Pirates wiped out and Garp's heroism in God Valley. Dragon was imprisoned and wants to quit Marine. Garp help him to escape.
In Elbaph, Loki knows the news about Xebec's death. As for King Harald, he felt guilty to not lend Xebec a hand when he needs it. Hence, he will oppose a giant who does evil. King Harald went to Marineford to atone for his sins and all the past generations. He broke his horns as a gratitude for his atonement.

Behold! The SPOILERS!
Volume 114 or rather the God Valley incident volume. Basically, everything in this volume revolves around the incident and we’re also still in Loki’s flashbacks (don’t know why this is included here but let’s not question it). Anyway, I love this volume so much. It’s great. It has some really iconic moments and the ones that hit hard hit REALLY hard.
My favorite thing is probably Shakky and Rayleigh. I just love these two lovebirds and I’m obsessed with how Rayleigh is in love with Shakky but he’s also the only one actually giving her space and not being all lovey dovey around her (as opposed to Roger, lol). I absolutely love how she left him that message and because of it even Roger backed down a little. And then at God Valley… loved how Rayleigh saved her. They are one of my favorite One Piece ships for sure.
Another amazing aspect of this volume is the relationship between Garp and Roger. I love their rivalry but also how much they actually respect each other. Also can we just appreciate the fact that I see Luffy and Ace in them, thank you (especially Garp who just does what he feels is right just like Luffy). But back to their dynamic, I love how they cooperate to defeat Rocks and I love that none of them really wants to do it but they know it’s the only way. I also really appreciate how Roger’s crew decided to save Garp as well even though he is basically their enemy.
I guess I should also mention Rocks here since he is rocking it in this volume (get it?). I mean, this guy is the descendant of Davy Jones so he is a huge deal. Also I love how he went to the God Valley mainly to protect his son and his woman. I always thought he was gonna be this big bad guy but no, he is pretty chill. Deranged for sure, but a decent person nonetheless.
And finally, we have Shanks. So we already knew that he was Figarland’s son and that he had a twin brother but I love the story of how he ended up on Roger’s ship in a treasure chest. It was really cute and I loved how Dragon saved him. I think he is also a great character in this volume with this purpose of saving people cause he finds what the celestial dragons do disgusting. I really like the scene with him in prison at the end and Garp basically helping him escape even though he knows his son will never respect him.
This is a great volume and it deserves 5 stars. The God Valley incident lived up to its hype and I’m really excited to see how the flashback continues and how all of this impacted Loki as well.

ROCKS. HAROLD. GARLING. GOD VALLEY. WE FUCKING MADE IT. its crazy to think of how long we have waited for so many of these elements and its perfect. its funny, epic, tragic and god valley lived up to the hype. all the major reveals were amazing as well as the compelling emotional beats from rocks and his family. shakky, shanks and shamrock, harold and elbaf. like truly worth the wait and perfect.

Seriously hard hitting story here. And not just because of the Domi Reversi, but for the fact that powerful entities can just treat coveted countries like play things and hunt the regular people like sport.

After all the leadup and foreshadowing, I really expected more out of God Valley. It was fine, it was perfectly acceptable, just underwhelming from a series that normally handles these payoffs well.
