Some surgeons prefer not to use the patient’s name outside of a clinical setting. They feel it’s too difficult and they could get attached, but I want to know their name. I want to see them as a human, with feelings and flaws... because when I improve or even save a life, I feel a connection. It sprinkles peace into my empty heart. I’d like to say it fills it, but nothing ever has, or ever will, since the accident. If I can save a life, mend that person, and spare a family that bone-crushing loss, the tiniest bit of color may briefly touch my black heart. You know how you watch Grey’s Anatomy & after multiple seasons, you feel like you could perform surgeries like a pro? Well, after reading this book, I can totally survive for a month in the wintery wilderness. Right? That’s how it works? Haha. But seriously, my delusional confidence just proves how amazing Heidi’s writing is here. It’s almost baffling how she’s able to introduce new characters, dump them in the snow, give them a handful of injuries, & tell an emotional, moving, thrilling tale in the novella format, but she does it brilliantly. There was never a point when I felt like the story was underdeveloped or was left confused about something. And these characters? OMG I love them so much! *starts crying immediately* They are two beautifully broken souls who find something in one another that feels almost cosmic or fated in a way, but they still have to work hard to nurture it. This story is complexly layered & magnificently written to crack open your heart & leave you in your feelings. I absolutely loved it. Can we please just give Amanda & Spencer hugs now?
"I’ll never stop saving as many lives as I can because it’s the only way I can live with myself... I’ll only destroy you if you let me in.” She reaches for me, and instead of shutting her out, I fall into her... She tightens her hold on me, but I still won’t release my pain...This is Heidi's 2nd book & while the two aren't connected, her talent is clear to see. One book is a paranormal romance involving a mermaid (Rose Moon) & another is a story about finding love through literal survival. Two wildly different ideas, but the connective tissue between them is Heidi's brilliant brain & creativity. She writes with such emotion, you can feel the creative passion behind her characters & the worlds she creates.
“Spencer, you don’t have to hide it from me. Please don’t. Let me love you.” ...
Her words. She means them. The dam inside me crumbles, and I fall apart in her arms. I don’t care how shattered I look or sound... all I care about is that she is here in a way no one ever has been before. For the competent doctor and for the broken disaster. For me. For all of me.
He feels it, too. I know he does, but it’s a matter of which broken soul will make the first move, and are we brave enough? ... Tears spring into my eyes as I hug him tighter. Hope. Spencer is hope. Hope to return home and that my heart could feel again.I'm in such awe with her ability to write emotional stories that don't feel heavy on the soul. Because life is a mixture of emotional moments, romantic ones, lightweight reprieves, etc. Heidi's writing mirrors the human experience perfectly, which makes everything feel more real because it's grounded in things we know or have lived ourselves (well, maybe not everyone has experienced an interaction with a mermaid or been in a plane crash, but you catch my drift 😉).
