This was…different

So, I went into this expecting a high heat dark romance. I suppose technically that is what I got. But my main issue with this book is actually the smut scenes. They are PLENTIFUL, which I like, but each scene is so fast and ends so abruptly that there wasn’t much time to get into them for me. Outside of that, a large majority of the scenes are so hilariously placed that I’m not convinced that wasn’t meant to be a little bit funny. There were points where I rolled my eyes and had to laugh because “are you really tryna have segs right now? REALLY? You are literally running from a murderer, now is not the time for romance, get back up!” (that isn’t a scene from the book but it’s exactly how nearly all the spice scenes felt).

I mean, they’re propositioning roughly everyone that walks by and all propositionees agree to this sexcapade, offered by who, to them, is the guy that just walked into their shop 5 minutes ago to buy a candy bar. Have a murderer who wants to murder you tied in the basement? Maybe your friend who he’s never met can walk down there and f*ck him for some reason after about 15 seconds of dialogue (this isn’t an exaggeration). Boss take you out to a fancy steakhouse for lunch as an intro to the job you got yesterday? Maybe you could get fully naked and have him f*ck you at the dinner table because his leg touched yours and that’s all the discussion needed.

I think these wouldn’t be so bad if they weren’t so quick. No one is getting prepped, there’s virtually no foreplay. Tim over there is just shoving it in all at once, Tom is now writing in ecstasy, then he comes on the floor. Thats the whole scene. No finesse or much description as to what’s happening. It felt like it was written the day before the deadline and there was a 75 s*x scene minimum.

3 stars for the laughs, but the strange-sex-scene-choices combo pack fully erased the eroticisms for me and it ended up feeling more like an episode of scooby doo.

Zoinks!
