Alliance Bride

Rate this book
A kingdom in danger. A marriage born of duty. A love neither expected.

Eadlyn’s homeland teeters on the brink of ruin. After years under her father’s violent, indulgent rule, Essix is fractured and vulnerable—an easy target for enemy kingdoms. With her younger brother newly crowned and the throne unsteady, Eadlyn offers the only thing she has: herself.

A marriage alliance with the fierce Nords may be Essix’s last hope for survival. But it means leaving behind everything she’s ever known and placing her fate in the hands of a people known for their brutality. Still, Eadlyn is willing to risk it all and trust the God she’s always believed in to protect her and her country.

Aevar has already had and lost his chance at love. Now, marrying the Essian princess is simply a duty, one that will secure peace and strengthen both their peoples. What he won’t do is open his heart again. Determined to keep his distance, he focuses only on keeping her safe from those who oppose their fragile alliance.

But as the bond between them grows and dangers gather, old wounds begin to heal. Together, they must learn to trust not just each other, but the providence of a God greater than any kingdom.

Norse-inspred romantasy that is faith-filled and no-spice.

I had the pleasure of reading this book early, and it is SO GOOD!

This is a kingdom adventure fantasy romance inspired by the Vikings. There's no magic and it isn't exactly historical, although it is very inspired by real history.

For the good of her kingdom, Eadlyn agrees to an arranged marriage with a Viking. She's swept into a new culture and new world, filled with both joys and dangers. The romance in the book is sweet and swoony (while still no spice). I couldn't stop reading as both the romance and the unfolding plot grabbed me from the very beginning.

Eadlyn's faith shines throughout this book. Although she is forced by her circumstances to marry an unbeliever, she prays for his salvation and stands strong in her faith, even as she finds herself very alone and cut off from everything she's known. She's a great witness both to those around her and to the reader.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a fantasy romance that's clean and filled with faith.

I received a copy of this book from the author. But all opinions are my own.

I absolutely loved the Ilyon Chronicles, so when I saw the author was writing a standalone and trying something new, of course I was going to give it a go!

Alliance Bride is a story about Princess Eadyln, whose kingdom is crumbling and needs an alliance to a Viking Warrior in order to survive. She must sacrifice, and marry to secure peace for her kingdom.

I love a good arranged marriage trope, especially when it’s one that’s a slow burn and feelings develop over time. Add to it that it’s Viking inspired - IM IN.
I thought the author did a great job of letting these characters get to know each other before things progressed. The faith elements were woven in beautifully.

Overall - This book at its core is a story about courage, strength and faith. I really enjoyed seeing Aevars spiritual journey over the course of the book. The close knit family was also nice and refreshing. If you like Viking stories that are clean, heartfelt, and faith inspired, I would definitely recommend!

I loved it!!! The characters were great, I found them fascinating and entertaining, especially the main two. While it’s not as much a fav as Ilyon was, I still absolutely adored it. It wasn’t long enough, in my opinion. I wanted to sit with the characters longer, feel things more with them and see more of their life, even though that was already well depicted.
I love the marriage of convenience/arranged marriage trope so this was right up my alley. I loved that even though the two of them didn’t want to marry a total stranger, they made it work for the better of both their kingdoms and people.
The faith was really good in this book and I appreciated the redemption of the male lead. While it may not always be the case in such relationships, I loved that he started with just listening to her talk. I think it was realistically portrayed and in line with his character qualities and personality. Those were some of my favorite moments, seeing the two of them together as she read and he just sat and listened to her. It made me really happy and I always smiled during those scenes.
I also love his love and ferocity for both his family and his new wife. I loveeed his family. They were the best and added so much to the story. Their dynamics and the way they accepted and loved the main girl were so amazing. It’s rare to find that in books and I really appreciated it!
The main girl was strong, but definitely feminine and girly. Another thing I liked. It showed her strength and character, but also what a woman should be.
I cannot recommend this book enough, and just truly loved it so much!! A fav for sure.

Content:
Violence, small mentions of a bad character with ill intentions towards a woman, and no-spice romance.

Did this book have to end? 😥 By the time I was getting towards the end of the book, I was literally reading like a few pages at a time just because I never wanted it to end. 🫣

As I've said a few times before, I'm really not a fan of marriage of convenience..but this couldn't have been done better. 🩷 The romance was slow, sweet and perfect in every way, and every problem I ever have with that trope, wasn't an issue here.

Eadlyn's strong faith was a big part in the book, and was very encouraging and inspiring to watch. I loved how Aevar encouraged Eadlyn with her faith, even though for awhile he didn't share it. They still always stayed strong together.

This book is truly incredible and I very highly recommend it! 🩷

THIS IS PROBABLY MY FAVORITE BOOK EVER!!!
The arranged marriage trope is famously my favorite and the way it is written in this book is just amazing.
The faith and strength of Eadlyn was inspiring. The romance was beautiful. The story was fantastically woven. Jaye did a wonderful job. My hope is that she writes Kian’s story. I want more!!!!

Wow, was that intense! I absolutely loved this book, thankfully picked it up during a school break or else my students wouldn’t have gotten anything graded until I finished it. 🤪 Eadlyn sacrifices so much for her kingdom marrying a stranger from a pagan land to protect her people, and in the end gained so much more than she could have imagined. Loved how she clung to her faith against impossible odds and even managed to share her faith with her new family and especially her husband. And poor Aevar. No spoilers, but he needs a hug a lot sooner than he actually gets one. As I’ve come to expect with Jaye’s books, there are characters healing from a past that has broken them, strong faith elements, adorable romance, and, um, let’s just say it’s always only a matter of time before the male lead sustains a life threatening injury. And that finale. Had me audibly protesting the horrible things Jaye did to her characters. (Does my cat think I’m crazy? Probably.) But in the end, there is always a happy ending and I just want more of these characters and their world. (Except Oda. If I never see Oda again it’ll be too soon. She’s awful.) Highly recommended!

I received a free ARC of this book and I'm leaving my thoughts voluntarily.

This book was absolutely lovely!!! I really love a good, well written arranged marriage, and this one DEFINITELY applies to that!! Eadlyn was a great main character: strong and compassionate and kind and impressively good at adapting to her surroundings!!! And Aevar was such a good character, too, I really loved his backstory, and seeing his journey towards faith!!
Also, Kian my beloved. No notes, 10/10, he was AMAZING

Oh, I loved this so much! So sweet, so cozy, so full of warmth and love and everything homelike. And that even though the trouble and danger and heartache was real and present. I loved the pictures of Nord culture, and I loved the themes and heart of the story. But most of all I loved the characters, so so much!

Aevar was so strong and kind, even in his brokenness. And Eadlyn was so brave and willing to learn and sacrifice. I adored them both--couldn't help it, and didn't really expect anything different. But the secondary characters!!! Aevar's family was so lovely--every single one of them! I adored his relationship with his brothers and how protective they were while still being perfectly willing to tease and compete and be bluntly honest with each other. Heida was an unexpected delight--not at all the kind of character I usually fall for but with such depth and care beneath the surface--I just adored her. <3 And Kian!!! I was in love with Kian from the minute he opened his mouth. And, is it a ridiculous comparison to say he reminded me so much of Talas? XD That's not a criticism in any way--I absolutely love Talas--but the picture popped into my head about as soon as I met him and just would not be shaken. But for the role of best friend/sidekick/unofficial member of the family Kian was just perfect.

I loved the way the gospel was woven through the story, the way Eadlyn continued to pray for and present the truth to her new husband, and the way Aevar respected her beliefs even if he didn't hold them. I appreciated that while the realities of war and violence weren't glossed over, they also weren't dwelt on unnecessarily. And I loved that while everything wasn't sunshine and rainbows (actually there were some bits near the end that were quite intense!), the focus was on the good and beautiful amid the troubles. Just overall loved the book so much! Definitely recommended. <3

Goodreads doesn’t have this option but I am giving this book SIX STARS. One of my favorite reads of the year! I was loving this book so much that I preordered a signed copy before I even finished it!! That’s how much I adore this story!

Medieval fiction, especially with strong Christian themes, is something that I’m discovering I love reading! I love the culture, the time period, the way day to day activities are portrayed and the way the characters inspire me!

Alliance Bride was no different. From the moment I saw this cover, I knew I had to read it! And I’m so glad I did!!!

Eadlyn and Aevar stole my heart. Eadlyn’s grace and strong faith were so inspiring. She lit up the page, and I adored the way she fit in so seamlessly with Aevar’s family (who I also adored, particularly Kian). Aevar was so sweet. I loved how he looked after Eadlyn and protected her. Every time he watched her from across the room I squealed a little bit! Their love story was so sweet!

But my favorite moment was when Aevar surrenders himself to the Lord. It was so poignant and beautifully written, and then way it all came about felt so natural and authentic.

This book deserves all the hype it will get and more!!! Thank you so much Jaye L. Knight for the privilege of reading this story early! Go preorder now because you don’t want to miss this one!!!!

JAYE L. KNIGHT if you see this please write Kian’s story for us next, he was a brilliant character! 😂

Now that that is out of the way, this book was awesome! One of my most anticipated new releases, and it did not disappoint. Perfect for Christian girls who are looking for a romantasy-like book without spice, and with Christian themes throughout! I would suggest ages 17+ just because of the arranged-marriage trope, and some comments that were made about that. There was kissing, but no language, magic, or spice.

Love love love this book and I don’t have enough good things to say about it!

I had such high hopes for this book, but unfortunately, it left me utterly saddened and disappointed.

Don't get me wrong. The writing was superb, the characters were well-developed, and the world-building was excellent, but there was one fatal flaw that absolutely ruined the entire book for me: the Christian heroine's decision to rebel against God's design and marry an unsaved man, just for the hope of a more secure kingdom.

The Bible couldn't be more clear: Christians entering unequally yoked relationships is 100% against God's will. Since the female main character constantly read Scripture, talked about her faith and trust in God, and prayed, it was disappointing for her to come up with the idea to marry a man who worshipped and sacrificed to false gods instead of trusting in the true God to secure her kingdom. It was a let-down for her to enter into a sinful marriage relationship (even for a "noble" reason) and not feel a single prick of her conscience about her blatant disregard for God's command. (I think many would feel the same way if she decided to marry a woman for the sake of her kingdom's safety. But both sinful relationships are high-handed rebellion against God's Word.)

I've seen the absolute devastation unequally yoked marriages bring in real life, and this story sugar-coats that reality. Most believer/non-believer relationships don't end up in a fairy-tale, happily-ever-after where the unsaved partner repents and converts in a matter of months. I think this glossing-over of the hardships does a true disservice to young Christian women considering marriage. I've seen Christian women trapped in marriages with unsaved men. It's absolutely nothing like this book depicts. It's heartbreaking, soul-crushing, and should be avoided at all costs.

If Eadlyn really wanted to follow God with her life, she would have refused to marry a heathen man and trusted God to keep her people safe anyway. Like many biblical heroes of the faith, she should have obeyed God's clear commands in Scripture no matter the threat to her life, her country, or her kingdom.

That would have been a heroine worth reading about.

No author warning because I have nothing negative to say about this book 💜

It has been a while since I’ve been so captivated by a story. ‘Alliance Bride’ is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that marriage of convenience is one of my favorite tropes. There’s just something about two strangers committing to make their marriage work, regardless how the marriage came to be.
Eadlyn and Aever are two broken people who find healing and comfort in one another. One of my favorite parts in the book is how Eadlyn helped Aever find faith in God. I loved the scenes of her reading the Bible to him. It really set a good foundation for their relationship.
The romance was written so well. They had a lot to work through and I was so giddy when they finally decided to try and have a real marriage. The scenes of them flirting with each other were fantastic.
I also loved how Eadlyn was folded into his family and how much they loved her. I really enjoyed the side characters in this book. Kian was my favorites. He brought so much levity and sound advice. I really hope he gets his own story.
The only characters I found annoying were the ones we weren’t supposed to like anyway.

Seriously, you need to get this book. It releases Nov 7th. If you don’t want to wait you can order directly from Jaye L. Knight.

I started this book yesterday, and finished it at 12:06 am because I couldn’t put it down! Your writing style had me hooked within the first couple of pages, and luckily I was on a roadtrip so I could continue reading with minimal interruptions! Though as I got farther along in the book, I was sad because I didn’t want it to end. Is this going to be a series? I loved the world you built in this novel a lot and would 100% read any other books that take us back to this family. I kinda think Kian deserves a book to himself!

Actual rating: 4.5 stars, rounded up.

Alliance Bride is a Viking-inspired romance featuring imagined kingdoms, real-world faith, and a very clear presentation of the Gospel. It’s also a beautiful, slowburn, heartfelt romance. It’s not often that my attention is held so rapt by a developing relationship, but Eadlyn and Aevar had my heart from their first meeting to the very last page. Knight crafted something truly lovely and moving in this novel.

The story opens to the forging of an alliance between two kingdoms--Essix and Nordra. Essix is a Christian people, though the weaker nation. Nordra, a Viking-inspired nation, is strong, battle-ready, and far more pagan. It is Nordra that serves as the backdrop for most of the tale. Essix has very little to offer Nordra in order to gain an alliance from them. They have resources to trade, yes, but as the obviously weaker nation, why would Nordra choose to align with them, to come to their defense against a greater foe, when they could merely raid and pillage? There’s really only one answer, one agreement that could solidify relations between the two kingdoms: a marriage alliance.

Eadlyn is our female perspective. She is the princess of Essix, sister to the young king. The marriage alliance was her idea. She's understandably scared, but brave in spite of it all. Her prayer life is robust and vital and as common to her as breathing. It's lovely how integral her faith is to her being. She works hard at learning to fit into her new life, new home, new family and people. All the while holding fast to God in a foreign, violent, pagan land. And she flourishes there in a way she never could have in Essix.

Aevar, our male lead, is the younger son of Jarl Runar, King of the Nord clans. He agrees to wed Eadlyn, as his brothers are either wed or betrothed. A widower, he has loved and lost, and expects this marriage to be purely political. He doesn't believe his heart is whole enough to love again, and he fears ever again caring enough about someone to be devastated by losing them.

This wedding is viewed as "a transaction, not a celebration." Which means that the story being told here manages to be both a marriage of convenience and a slowburn, heartfelt romance. And the romance is the heart and soul of the story. It's the focus of the vast majority of the plot. I don't tend to read much straight-up romance like this, but Knight's storytelling and character work gripped me. I was rooting so hard for Eadlyn and Aevar to fall for each other wholly and completely. This is one of the most sweetly, achingly romantic stories I've ever read.

That's not to say there isn't action to be found here. There is. I found myself incredibly stressed about two thirds into the book. Especially as the source of said stress came out of nowhere, blindsiding me along with the characters I had grown to love. And that level of tension endured until the epilogue of the novel.

While I really loved this story, I did have a couple of slight, nitpicky critiques. Some of the battle sequences were a bit difficult to follow, seeming foggy or muddy in their descriptions instead of clear and concise. I also felt that the dialogue occasionally came across as too modern for the setting. But again, those are both incredibly nitpicky issues, and they never affected my enjoyment of the story for a single moment.

I enjoyed Alliance Bride from start to finish. Knight told the story beautifully. I really enjoyed her writing style, her sense of place, and the love she put into her characters. This was an endearing cast of characters, one I grew to love alongside Eadlyn. The sense of family captured here was wonderful. The way faith was presented, as ever vital and of eternal import, was fantastic, and was one of my favorite elements of the story alongside the romance. While this is a standalone, it made me eager read more of her work. I’m looking forward to diving into Knight’s completed Christian fantasy series, the Ilyon Chronicles, next year!

I received an ARC copy of this book and am leaving my free and honest review!

For years now, I've been a fan of Jaye L Knight. Her Ilyon Chronicles were my first introduction into independently published Christian fiction, and I still think about them regularly (probably am due for a reread, actually). So when I saw that she was releasing a new book, I knew I had to read it.

And fabulous news—it met all expectations, and then some!!

I adored the world building. The Nord's culture was so cool and well written. Their emphasis on strength and family was amazing, and contrasted Eadlyn's past directly in a super well written way. Also, SEAX KNIFE!!!!

Obviously, I adored the characters. The villains were loathsome, and the heroes incredible. Aevar was so honorable and respectful, even when he didn't share Eadlyn's faith, and it was inspiring. His brothers and Kian were amazing little gremlins, and I adored them. Heida was so cool, and OBVIOUSLY I adored Eadlyn. Her faith was inspiring, and she was so brave and willing to embrace a new part of her life. OH and Galen. Galen was possibly my favorite part of the book.

The romance was everything an arranged marriage romance should be, and more. So sweet and respectful and the way they GREW. I also adored the side romances, they were so cute. This was just such a good book!! Highly recommend it, especially to fans of Tara Grayce's Elven Alliance books, or to anyone who's read The Painter's Daughter but wanted. more violence

Other readers have commented on how cozy this book is, and I agree. This is, as most love stores are, a tale of strangers to lovers. It's not as flashy as enemies to lovers nor as funny as friends to lovers. Instead there is a sense of steady, painstakingly won progress as two people with integrity and kind hearts work their way through fear, grief, and pain to find a place inside each others' hearts and by each others' side.

How is it possible to love a book–the characters, the landscape, the every day life–so much?? Honestly I had such high expectations for it that I was almost too scared to read it, afraid I'd be disappointed. Let me tell you, I was not!
I have no words to describe how wonderful and perfect this book is! I fell in love with Aevar's family, their whole wonderful, warm, hilarious dynamic. I loved how they supported Aevar the whole way while also giving him some tough truths when he needed it; and then the way they so warmly accepted Eadlyn and treated her like family just melted my heart!
Speaking of melting my heart... I could not get enough when Aevar finally decided to stop closing his heart off to Eadlyn. Their relationship was so rocky in the beginning that watching it slowly blossom into something deep and real and beautiful was just... *happy sigh* Perfectly done. An absolute joy to read. Jay has 100% become my favorite author.
This book is a masterpiece that I will treasure forever, and read every time I'm in need of a comfort read. I can not find one negative thing to say about it! I loved it so much and wish I could read it for the first time over and over and over again 💜📖

This is my first time leaving a review, so bear with me! I was so excited to read Alliance Bride that I read it in one sitting.🙃
If you love Vikings and an arranged marriage/slow burn romance this book is for you!!

What I liked:
-The romance was clean and enjoyable to read. I liked the main characters and Aevars family. Kian was one of my favorite characters!
I loved how the book ended; it just might have made me tear up🥹🤭
The first scene we met Aevar in, I instantly liked him. His character was very honorable and likable.

Favorite quote:

They had come through the fire and were still standing. Together.

What I didn’t like:
I’ve read Jaye L. Knight’s other series, The Ilyon Chronicles (my favorite series of all time), and I loved the depth of the characters in Ilyon. I didn’t connect with Eadlyn like I had hoped.
I love how Eadlyn is a Christian, but really wanted to see her tell Aevars family about Christ and see them come to Christ as well. I was disappointed that it never shared if that happened.

I also felt that there was one detailed scene that I would have preferred not to be in the book. While it was clean, I felt it was a little too romantic for my liking.

Oh My Gosh. This book was amazing. I love a good marriage of convenience, especially one set back in time. And The Alliance Bride sure did not disappoint. Eadlyn and Aevar were the best couple. They entered their marriage with the intentions of helping out their kingdoms and not developing feelings for each other. Especially Aevar. He didn’t want history to repeat itself. But as time went on, the relationship and feelings began to develop and grow between the two. When an unfortunate event happened it made their feelings for each other known and there was no stopping them.
I received an ARC and was not required to write a positive review. I received no monies or discounts. These words are my own.

Warriors. Alliance Marriage. Slow burn. Faith. Touch her and ☠️. Quiet Walks and a calming atmosphere (most of the time). Sacrifice. Strength. Courage. Peace. Second chance at love.
Thank you Jaye L. Knight.
This was just the book I needed. I was going through a hard time and this was the only book I could find peace in and wanted to read. It was so beautiful and I could escape into the world so easily.
I was finished with it too quickly.
I read this on Kindle but it's going on my shelf permanently.

Five stars. Loved it. I had expectations of how Eadlyn’s life would be after being thrown into this brutal Viking-like culture, but boy was I wrong. I LOVED Aevar’s family. There was so much love, respect, loyalty, kindness, teasing, happiness, and support. This book had so much hardship and trial, but through faith in Christ there was so much hope! I loved the Christian themes and I loved Eadlyn’s and Aevar’s slow burn. The healing, trust, and love was definitely earned but from the start they were respectful, kind, and protective. The visuals where they lived were breathtaking too! I want more from this world and family but I felt satisfied with the ending. This is an adult book but perfectly clean.

SPOILERS and book notes:
Edward is the new Essex king. He is young and not confident yet. Eadlyn is his sister. (They are like the Anglo Saxons) the Nord and warriors are like the Norman’s or Vikings. I love how humble Edward is and how faithful to God Eadlyn is. Even after the abuse they endured at the hand of their late father the king. In their culture the father or brother of the bride is supposed to fight the would be husband to see if he is worthy haha. Eadlyn puts a stop to it: ““Battle prowess does not determine the strength of a man’s character anyway.” I love the relationship of Aever and his brothers Erik, Braan and Kian. “This was comfort. His brothers. Their teasing. The easy camaraderie that had held him together when nothing else had.” They are all so good to their women too! “Life didn’t bend to comfort; it demanded adaptation.” On there way he stopped the prossession to get her an extra cloak bc he notices she was cold. Aww! They live in a big longhouse as one big family. Erik has a cute wife Ranvi and three sweet children! And Inga is Aevar’s sweet mother. Braan’s betrothed Heida is a tough woman warrior. Eadlyn finally told her husband where she got the scars on her face: “He did that to you?” “Yes.” She kept herself emotionless, refusing to let the memories hold power over her. “Then he is lucky he is already dead.” His voice held a protective, almost vengeful edge.” From her drunk late father. From the scriptures: ‘Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.’ How can you oppose evil if you’re too drunk or distracted to notice it?” Kian is so awesome! Protecting her when her husband isn’t there! ““Well,” he said brightly, “wasn’t that a lovely visit?” Eadlyn laughed, relief bubbling out with it. “Thank you. For everything.” “My pleasure.” Kian flashed a grin. “Saving princesses from idiots is my second-favorite pastime.” I love how much Hieda sticks up for Eadlyn. And then Aever challenges Sig (the man that tried to come at his wife) to a spar. ““Stay away from my wife,” Aevar growled low enough only Sig would hear, “or the next time you face my blade it will be a real one.” And she helped clean his wound. I love that they read scriptures together while everyone else gets drunk. Aww!! Sit was going to assault her when Aever shows up and beats him up! “Before he could draw it back in, Aevar threw him against a wooden pillar with a thud. Holding him there with one hand, Aevar yanked his long seax from his belt and pressed the blade to Sig’s throat. “You dare touch another man’s wife?” Sig gasped, his lips curling into a pained smile as if this were all a game to him. Aevar’s voice dropped to a low growl, thick with fury. “I should kill you right now.” He finally sees that he cares for her!! The wildflower he found for her!! Oh my heck! They are playing a manly game like football!!! This is the slowest burns of slowest burns and I am HERE FOR IT. The first time he touches her affectionately is 54%. I DIED. Galen comes to visit! And they are finally going to spar to see if Aevar is worthy of Eadlyn. ““What is it with men trying to beat each other senseless to prove something?” Ranvi laughed. “You’ll get used to it. They’re all just overgrown boys.” And look at this!!! What she can do to him!! ““Who will you be cheering for?” She glanced at the ring, then back at him. “I’ve never cheered against Galen before.” He nodded with a look of resignation, dropping his gaze, and something in his posture seemed to droop. Before he turned away, she reached out, letting her fingers rest on the leather rim of his shield. “But you’re my husband,” she said softly. “I want you to win.” A smile broke across his face, wide and boyish. He stood taller in that instant, pride straightening his spine like armor. That her words and support held such power over him thrilled her.” Galen wins but Aever loses so gracefully with a laugh and a compliment. And Galen says that he is worthy of princess Eadlyn!!! awww!! Slowest burn ever!! “Aevar approached her, still catching his breath, his expression sheepish. “I hope you still consider me worthy even in defeat.” A fierce warmth swelled in her chest. “It was how you handled defeat that proved you’re worthy. Like I said back in Essix, battle prowess does not determine the strength of a man’s character.” He leaned in close, tracing his eyes over her face as he spoke in a low voice. “You showed your own strength that day. I’ve never forgotten it.” His gaze dropped to her lips…” The alliance is working well! Their first kiss after he gave her a necklace that was like her mother’s! What happened when the raiders came: “Aevar reappeared, this time with Kian, both armed with sword and shield. They took up positions beside Runar, Erik, Braan, and Heida, closing in around the women and children like a wall of flesh and iron.” He got injured! And almost died! But she slept by him for days and he woke up by her side. “Then came the kiss, gentle and unhurried. She leaned into it without hesitation, treasuring the open affection. In Kenwich, most noblemen treated their wives with cold reserve in public. But Aevar kissed her like the world wasn’t watching, and even if it was, he didn’t care.” Ever rode a horse into the longhouse to see if Eadlyn would go riding with him! Hehe I love this quote: ““Besides, I’ve learned that if we let fear dictate how we live, it’s not really living.” She couldn’t hold back a smile.” Look at the place be takes her to: “The trees opened, revealing a hollow wrapped in green. A narrow waterfall spilled over mossy rocks into a crystal-clear pool, the water catching slants of sunlight and scattering golden mist into the air. Willow branches trailed like curtains across the banks, and the whole place exuded peace.” This is where he teaches her how to swim!! Aw!!! I love it so much!!! This was my favorite kiss of theirs. Oh creepy that Oda is caught spying on them!! He is ticked! ““She belongs with me. I chose her.” “You chose wrong.” His temper flared white-hot. “I would choose her again a hundred times over.” Look at this!!!! And then she declares her love for him: “As she changed into her sleep shift, she glanced over her shoulder to where he prepared for bed and caught sight of his healing scar again. She paused. She didn’t see the wound; she saw the man who had shielded her with his own body during danger. Who had clung to life while she prayed at his side. Who had fought the pain and grief of his past to give her a place in his heart. Who had come to mean everything. The realization hit her now with such incredible force and clarity it knocked the air from her lungs. She loved him. Not just as the man she now trusted or as the husband she had vowed to honor. But deeply. Fiercely.” And they are finally man and wife!! And they are so adorable. He even braids her hair for her. I love this family!!! Aevar gives her an armband with an oath that he will only love her: ““It’s beautiful.” She looked up at him. “Your mother and Ranvi, were their arm rings given with the same oath?” “Yes.” His hand caressed her arm. “My father taught us that we should cherish our women. He believes that if a man cannot honor one woman for a lifetime, he has no business taking a wife.” He then calls her “My Love”!!!! Awww!!! The raiders took cute little trygg hostage and threatened to kill him unless Eadlyn willingly came with them and she did!!!!!! So brave!!!!! It was Sig and Oda that betrayed her!! The enemy is going to sacrifice her!!! Holy guacamole these last pages I zipped through. Oh my heck he comes in and saves her. Takes such tender care of her. He becomes converted to Christianity. He goes off to another battle ! But all the family is safe thank goodness bc I LOVE THIS FAMILY. There is only love and support and sacrifice and kindness. And the epilogue ends with them welcoming a baby girl into the world and my heart is full: “Eadlyn reached for his hand, and he took it, their fingers knotting together like the final thread in a tapestry only God could have woven. Together, they sat there in the lamplight, the blizzard raging beyond the walls, but within this room was only warmth. Only love. Only answered prayers.”

Wow! Thus story grips you from the beginning and doesn’t let you go until the epilogue! This is a story of strength and unwavering faith in the face of adversity. It is a story of learning to love and be loved. It is intense and adventure. And I’m already hoping for a sequel as the people in this story already live in my head! It is a marriage of convenience trope closed door story - meaning there are kisses only with a slight hint of what happens behind closed doors. It is a Viking book so there are battles and gore.

For fans of Carrie Cotten’s Huntress series- you will love this book!!!!

“For as long as we both draw breath, there will be none but you.” Eadlyn didn’t try to stop the tears from welling. They burned but were full of something too deep for words. “You have the same oath from me,” she whispered.

This alliance marriage story has Vikings, faith, a close-knit family, sparring and battles, and a slow-burn romance. It was one that every time I had to put the book down I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Jaye Knight has gained a fan, I’ve added her backlist to my TBR.

Eadlyn is quiet, gentle, and strong. Her bravery in choosing to be an alliance bride was incredible. I loved seeing the way she embraced her life with the Nords. I loved her faith and how she shared it with Aevar and prayed for him. Aevar is fierce, caring, and protective. He had some deep hurts and fears to work through. I loved his devotion to Eadlyn, and when he stopped fighting his feelings, oh my! I was an absolute puddle!! I enjoyed watching Aevar come to faith in the true God. I loved Aevar’s family, especially how quickly they accepted Eadlyn. The way these fierce warriors loved their wives and kids and didn’t care what anyone thought about it was fantastic!

Another quote:
“We’re all afraid of loss. Loving Ranvi and the children terrifies me sometimes. But what’s the alternative? A life with no love at all? Just keeping her at arm’s length, going through the motions, and growing old in silence? Is that really what you want?”

Note: Their is battle violence consistent with Vikings with blood and de@th.

I really enjoyed this book!! It has my favourite trope of marriage of convenience, but the characters and setting make it fresh. And the last quarter of the book—all I can say is you better hold on!

The family aspect in this book is one of my favourite parts. I love the interactions, the teasing, the love and the strong bonds between parents, children, in-laws, and siblings.

Eadlyn and Aever are wonderful characters you root for and ache with, yet understand. I also appreciated that the author allowed for a realistic amount time to pass for their developing relationship and healing of hurts.

The author also does a wonderful job of relaying Nordic culture in such a way that felt natural to the story and it added such depth and vibrancy to the story as a whole. I could go on, but I’ll stop there and also say I really hope the author continues to write in this world! I want to know Kian’s story!
