Calista, Goddess of Life and Suffering, has waited centuries for the mate fate promised her.
Malak has spent his life hating the gods of Valynth.
When they meet in a Gilyx prison cell, neither understands the full weight of what fate has done.
Calista hears the bitterness in his voice when he speaks of the gods. Malak does not realize that the woman he is falling for is one of the very beings he despises.
So she keeps her identity to herself.
Because once the truth is spoken, it cannot be taken back.
When fate pulls them together, love begins to take root where it should not. But hatred does not loosen its grip simply because love exists.
When the truth is revealed, Malak is forced to choose: Calista, or the vengeance that has shaped his entire life.
But Calista uncovers a truth of her own.
One that means fate did not bind her to her enemy by accident.
And when the whole truth comes to light, it will not simply break hearts.
First of all, I would like to thank Shay Taylor for the opportunity to be a permanent ARC reader for her books. So far, this is the fourth book in the same series that I’ve had the chance to read as an ARC for her. I definitely plan to read her other books as well, because up to now I’ve been incredibly enthusiastic about everything I’ve read.
This is book four of The Fourth Born series. In this book, we follow Calista Calavask, the Goddess of Life and Suffering from Valynth. She is the last of her siblings to search for her mate, but it does not come without challenges. Her mate has an intense hatred for the gods of Valynth. He is convinced that they are responsible for the murder of his parents and siblings. For that reason, Calista decides not to share her last name, but is that really the best decision? Because the truth always comes to light. How will Malek react when he discovers that Calista is part of the family he hates so much?
Every book is so different from the one before. Every couple has their own challenges. I love this series! Sidenote Kieran is still my favorite ♡
I don't want to spoil anything so if you are into romantasy with a hint of dark fantasy please go read this series. In this one you get:
▪︎ struggeling with depression ▪︎ necromancy ▪︎ MMF 🔥 ▪︎ lost memories ▪︎ found family ▪︎ enemies to lovers
It was such a pleasure to ARC read this entire series, to see it through to the end.
I don’t want to give anything away but now I’m wishing I had read the secrets & curses series first. If you’re looking for a multiple series story, start there. I think if I had read it, it would have made so much more sense when getting into the fourth born series.
I appreciated the mini story about Luther and Ares at the end. I think those two are my favorite out of everyone.
**A huge thank you to Shay Taylor and team for providing me with a free eARC. This is my honest review**
Thank you Shay for another e-arc! I’m so honored to be on your permanent arc team! 😍
Shay writes it, I’m reading it! ❤️
A conclusion to a series that doesn’t feel like it. How Shay interconnects all her series is just mind boggling to me how she keeps it all together!
Torment of the Gods is the final book of the Fourth Born series and follows Calista as she finds her mate, Malak.
She’s been waiting her whole life to find her mate and have that one special love. He’s destined for her. There’s just one problem…he hates the gods with a passion. And when he meets Calista, not knowing who she is, she hopes maybe he can love her enough before he knows that will make him change his mind. But when Malak’s moment of hesitation leads to his fate changing, it’s up to him, his best friend Corvin, and everyone’s God of Meddling, oh wait, I mean God of Fate, Abram 😝 he must fight not only to get the woman he loves back, but also help others on their own path of fate.
Since everything Shay writes is interconnected, we get characters from both the Secrets & Curses series but also the upcoming Gods of Gilyx series as well. On top of that, Luther and Ares ❤️ (they’re getting their own novella!!!!).
Malak and Calista’s story is definitely the most difficult journey of this series. I teared up in so many places. The torment they’ve both been through in their lives make it difficult for them to fully lean on the other when they should. Each of their magic too was quite unique and complementary at the same time. The reveal about Malak too tells me it’s for sure not the last we’ve seen of them and Gods of Gilyx is just going to keep weaving all these stories into one another time and time again.
The spice 🌶️….listen, I always say how is Shay going to crank it up or switch it up with each release and boy did she deliver this book! I was shocked! And I got nervous honestly on where some of it went this book but I knew i never should doubt Shay 😝 it was chef’s kiss 💋 it kicked up significantly and the mouth on Malak? 🥵🥵 there’s a scene in here that is completely different than anything she’s ever done but it was still hot 🥵 whew, I had to go back and read it again lol
I can’t wait for Gods of Gilyx, Ares/Luther novella, and Ezra’s book coming up How Shay has interwoven 3 separate series to almost feel like 1 big series is flabbergasting to me and I can’t get enough of it! Also, some of the prettiest covers ever! 😍
I will never forgive Shay for breaking me into pieces, but I will forever thank her for it.
Torment of the Gods welcomed me home with open arms, laughter, love, warmth, angst, anger and so many tears. Shay doesn’t just describe magic, she practices it herself. There’s no other way to describe it because her writing makes the reader feel every single emotion, makes them feel like they walk through the story alongside the characters, and makes them see the wielded magic crystal clear. Another thing that Shay is phenomenal at is weaving in realistic and relatable mental health that contributes to her stories. There is always a good balance between the difficult topics and the support from surrounding characters.
Torment of the Gods is one of the most perfect titles out here, because what Malak and Calista had to endure is nothing short of torment. With the past and future colliding there are several secrets, strong opinions, and more than one tough decision to make. That alone made the story gripping in the best of ways.
Seeing Calista and Malak interact, getting to know each other and growing into their relationship was a pleasure. Their relationship quickly turned into something I needed, rather than wanted. The twists in this book made me gasp several times and I was rarely right about what was going to happen. Shay has a unique talent for making me guess wrong. That said, I couldn’t have asked for a better ending to the Fourth Born series!
Honorary mention, Ares and Luther. We got to see more of them both and I am not disappointed. In this book we got to know them a little bit more, separately and together, and I can honestly say I cannot wait to read more about them. These two have a special place in my heart. But all side characters are layered and contribute to the story, they feel equally important.
I’m not saying goodbye to our Gods and Goddesses in Valynth, I’m just saying see you soon! I’m sure this isn’t the last we see of them.
Waiting to read this book, literally talk about torment! This is the 4th and final book of the 4th Born series by my favorite romantasy author Shay Taylor.
The lead up to this book was such an amazing journey of reading. I couldn’t wait to read about Calista and Malek! I always try to figure out which direction Shay is gonna take and each time I am met with shock in the key details she chooses, the plot twists, the foreshadowing that leaves you craving more of what her brilliant mind creates!
The spice in her series are always just the right amount for my liking while reading fantasy, as I prefer more of the plot rather than the 🌶️ scenes. HOWEVER, she cranked it to a level that she hasn’t quite reached in her previous books! 🥵 I must say the way she built such a sensual suspense in the Sins of the Gods book (3/4) was the perfect gateway into the 💣 drop of a new sensual literary recipe i didn’t know i was craving 🤤 Thus, I give her collection of 🌶️ a 4.5.
The characters in this Shayverse are connected in one way or another throughout each series. Which is such a divine decision on Shay’s part, as it keeps the reader engaged either by deepening the understanding of previous books or encouraging the reader to make hypothesis’s in their head that they HAVE to read the next book🤗
The next series I can’t wait to read about is, Gods of Gilyx. This series will bring forth some long awaited love stories I’ve been yearning to learn about for too long.
I had the pleasure of receiving this as an e-ARC and voluntarily will be giving my honest review. This is the final book in the four book series and what a book!! This was a heart wrenching emotional roller coaster!! I totally devoured this book in two days!! This was a phenomenal read but what an ending 😢!!
“Calista, Goddess of Life and Suffering, has waited centuries for the mate fate promised her. When she finally finds him, it is not in a place of destiny or beauty—but in a prison cell in Gilyx.
Malak has spent his life hating the gods of Valynth. To him, they are not worthy of worship, only blame. The last thing he would ever want is to be bound to one.
But neither of them understands the truth of what fate has done.
Drawn together in a dangerous realm, Calista finds herself falling for a man who would despise her if he knew what she truly was. So she keeps her identity hidden, knowing that once the truth is spoken, it cannot be undone.
As their bond deepens, love begins to take root in a place it never should have. But hatred does not disappear simply because love exists, and Malak’s past is not something he can easily let go.
When the truth is finally revealed, he is forced to choose between the woman he is falling for and the vengeance that has shaped his life.
But Calista soon discovers there is more at play than either of them realized. Fate did not bind her to her enemy by accident, and the truth behind their connection threatens far more than their hearts.
I love all of Shay's books No really, her fantasy romance books are amazing. If you haven't ready them yet, I highly recommend them. Torment of the Gods is Book 4 in the Fourth Born series. This series is about the gods of Valynth and how each of their fates mates is a Fourth Born in their family. Fourth Borns have been shunned and believe to be cursed because their god brother Artemis spread this rumor to try to stop the matings. While I do feel like you could read this as a standalone, there is quite a lot of backstory in the prior books in the series, as well as the Secrets and Curses series - all of the books are 5* reads for me and I devoured them all. There is talk of depressive episodes in this book as the FMC struggles with this when she is an adult. It's Calista's turn to find her mate, who just happens to hate the gods. Malak blames the Valynth goes for the death of his family. He is helping his friend Abram with some things, but along the way, Calista helps Malak out of a prison in Gilyx. Malak doesn't know exactly who Calista is, but can't stay away from her. The more time he spends with her the more he thinks she might be his mate. Only when he finds out who she is truely, one of the gods he hates, he decides too late that it doesn't matter, it's over. Now Malak needs to make it right before it's too late.
I always know that whatever Shay writes, I’m going to *absolutely* devour and the ARC version of this latest book did not disappoint!
Calista has long since waited patiently for her destined mate. When her path finally crosses with her long awaited fated mate, it’s certainly not plain sailing for either of them.
Malak despises all members of the Calavask family with a passion. Which causes Calista immense pain and conflict. Though reading how their relationship develops, despite Calista’s secrets and Malak’s firm opinionated beliefs was gripping. I think Malak has the filthiest mouth out of all the characters we’ve seen in the Fourth Born series. I was honestly blushing at some points. Despite some serious, heart wrenching decisions on both parts, their romantic entanglement evolves into something I found so addictive I just couldn’t put the book down!
“I love you with every broken piece of myself, whether you ever choose to claim it or not,”
“A life without you is not a life I wish to endure.”
I always love multiple POV’s and this didn’t disappoint. The crossover between characters from previous books in the series added to the enjoyment. Many pieces finally clicked into place for me and as always left me desperate for the next release by Shay. Don’t keep us waiting long!
STOP EVERYTHING!!! The finale of the Fourth Born series is here and it is EVERYTHING!! ⚔️✨
What an epic, world-shattering conclusion to the Fourth Born series!!! This finale hit differently than anything else I’ve read. Imagine getting a taste of everything you’ve ever wanted, only to have it ripped away by your own hands.
This story follows Malak, the last of the Fourth Borns, and Calista, the last of the Calavask god siblings, in a race against fate itself. It gives you that "happy ending" high before ripping the rug out from under you in the best (and worst!) way possible. I was screaming, kicking my feet, and begging for more. This isn't just a series finale, it’s the culmination of the entire universe, setting the stage perfectly for the Gods of Gilyx series.
It’s a beautiful, heart-wrenching, and visceral ending to a phenomenal series.
In true Shay Taylor fashion, the emotions here are palpable. You don’t just read about Malak and Calista’s journey...you break along with them. As the Valynth (Fourth Born series) pieces of the "ShayVerse" click into place, the revelations will leave you speechless. If you haven’t started this series yet, consider this your wake-up call. Run, don’t walk...your TBR isn't complete without this masterpiece!!!
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book from the author. From the very first page I felt something. It spoke to me and I knew I would relate the FMC in a big way. I love that the author is not afraid to bring mental health conditions to the light through her books. This book is the last in the Fourth Born series, but will transition into a new series.
"For the ones who felt like they were too broken to be loved… and were loved anyway." Torment of the Gods - Shay Taylor (Kindle Locations 5-6). Kindle Edition.
Look, I have said this every time. "This one is my favorite one of the series!" In reality they are all SO SO GOOD. Having read them all, I can never choose a favorite. But, there is just something about Calista and Malek. They are both so broken. Secrets and betrayal tear them apart and the their fate is hanging by a thread. One wrong decision or move can mean disaster for so many. This book is an emotional journey will all of the SPICE!! 6/5 stars 5/5 spice and all the feels. I can not recommend this book, this series or this author enough.
Shay’s books seriously NEVER disappoint. I absolutely loved Calista and Malaks story. There were so many emotions that you could physically feel yourself while reading this. I don’t know how many times I cried while reading this. I’m glad we got a little bit of a back story of Malak and why his hatred was so strong. I loved that there was a little twist with his story as well.
Corvin was a lovely companion throughout this story. He fit in so well and I loved his advice and thinking. I also loved that he was rooting for Calista and Malak.
I also loved that this book showed glimpses of what depression and anxiety can feel and look like. I loved that the author chose to incorporate mental health aspects into this story because he really went well with the story.
I would give this book ten stars if I could. I loved every second of this read. I cannot wait to see how her next series plays out!
Once again, Shay Taylor delivers. The groundwork laid in the previous books makes it easy to dive straight into this story, and it doesn’t take long before you’re completely hooked.
The plot is full of twists and turns that keep you guessing, and the emotional depth is intense—you genuinely feel the characters’ pain as if it were your own. It’s one of those books that pulls you in so deeply that putting it down is nearly impossible.
There’s also the added bonus of getting more Luther and Ares content, which was a great touch for fans of the series. Corvin stands out as a fantastic side character, providing the perfect contrast to Mal as the main male lead.
If there’s one thing I would have loved, it’s a chapter from Calista’s perspective while she was in the cell—getting insight into her thoughts during that time would have added even more depth.
Overall, this is an absolute must-read, and I’m already impatiently waiting for the next book. 😩
ARC Review: Book lord thank you for another arc because omg. I was giggling and telling my husband the random scenes i was laughing at, and I was only 24 pages in. Shay has the perfect mix of witty banter, magic/fantasy, and spice. The amount of mental health representation in her books is amazing and yet gut wrenching if you relate to them. I don’t think there has been a book of hers that hasn’t made me cry or get emotional at some point throughout the book. I don’t want this series to end but I’m glad it’ll still tie into the next series and I can read about these characters again. I love that it’s in Malak’s POV, and that all the MCs in her books express their emotions (for the most part lol) and aren’t afraid to cry. Ugh, another cute ass couple that I’ve fallen in love with. I’m so ready for more on Bexla! She’s one crazy psychopath and I’m so excited lol
Never did I imagine when I decided to read a book about the god of Death that I found on TikTok that I would now be 10 books into a 14 book series and so happy to be there that I am devouring each one as quickly as I can get it. Shay has created a world that draws you in. All of the characters are beautifully developed. The story flows effortlessly between the interwoven series. Torment was the book that I think I had the most anxiety about. Honestly wondering at this point, how she would be able to unite the main couple when the MMC literally despised everything that he thought the FMC and her family were. He quickly learns that they are not what he has been lead to believe and then must win her back. Of course it isn’t easy. But in the end with relative stability in this realm, we move toward our last story and “saving the world”.
With how good every book from Shay is, I had high expectations for this and this was better 🤩 This book is emotionell rollercoster. The way Shay blends in mental health feels so real and fits with the story. Calista struggling with depression while seeing her family happy with their mates knowing hers hate her. This has yearning, found family and burning tension. Love seeing new parts of this amazing world 😍 While it is the end of Fourth born series, this built the way to the next series of this world ✨️ I had a hard time doing anything but read this yet I didn't want it to end 💙 Love how chaotic Bexla is and really look forward to Gods of Gilyx 😍 And definitely need more of Luther and Ares 🥹😍
I love being part of Shay’s Little Vipers and getting to read every single thing she writes before it comes out!
Now on to the good stuff. I’ve reached a new level of obsession with this book. Shay had the opportunity to do something in this book that made me so freaking excited (and feral). The only downside is that we didn’t get more of it 🥹 Shay, I know you read this and I know you know what I mean. MORE please!!! Give the people (me) what they want 👀 We also got to see a new side of Abram, which was the best thing ever. Daddy Abram is my absolute favorite thing. Malak and Calista’s story is full of up hill battles and trials, but in the end, they absolutely SLAY all those obstacles. Family isn’t always who you’re related to by blood, and this book shows the best kind of family ♥️
Thank you to the author, Shay Taylor, for an ARC copy.
The first three books in the Forth Born series were an absolute emotional rollercoaster for me—I absolutely loved them, and I expected the same from the final book. And I’m definitely NOT disappointed.
Shay Taylor has an incredible talent for making me cry. Truly—each book left me a sobbing mess, but this one… gods, how many times can one book break your heart?! I loved it, loved it, loved it!
Plot-wise, it’s a quick and entertaining read, but it’s the romance that truly keeps you captivated. I was so enchanted by the main characters and their story that I finished it in one day.
I’m really looking forward to more stories set in this world—and I definitely need to finally catch up on the first series!
And Shay Taylor does it again! Another wonderful edition to the fourth born series! I have been waiting for this story as the lead up to this fated match has been hinted at in her previous books. I was so interested to see how Shay was going to solve the loathing one half of the fated match has for the family of the other. I thoroughly enjoyed the ride and was so entranced by the story. This was an amazing wrap up of the fourth borns of the realm and the family they were fated to find. If you love kinda enemies to lovers, fated mates, immense power and magic, destiny, and love/spicy spice you need to read this book! I am excited to see where the stories continue for others in the realm in her next series!!!!
*ARC review* Malak hates the gods.... untill he meets her and fall hard and fast without knowing who she really is, he accepts her without question. Until he discovers the truth or at least part of the truth. This book seamlessly portrays hard topics like depression and lost family while ensuring everything contributes to the story nothing feels out of place. The heart break i experienced was so worth it. Although this is the final book in this series we get some good stepping stones to the next series Gods of Gilyx and also some very strong cameos of my personal favorite from the series that come before this one 5 star read for sure.
All the interconnected books in these series are fantastic. This book made me want to read them all again to remember where these characters had popped up before.
The final book in the fourth born series did not disappoint. The representation of depression was good, the lack of wanting to eat and just sleep. It was sad that Calista would think this made her unloveable. Malak finally stepped up to show her that he loves all the parts of her.
Corvin is a great character too, hope he gets a story too!
The intro into Ares and Luther’s story was interesting, they featured a bit towards the end of the book.
This is the final book of the Fourth Born series and while I’ve enjoyed all of the books this took the top spot along with the second book. This book was a perfect mix of love, trust, courage and found family. I love that the books are so interconnected and the storyline is continuous.
I had a great time seeing Calista and Malak’s relationship develop and reading their story but I was also so excited to see more of Luther and Ares. They deserve a happy ending together!!
While this may be the final book in this series it was also a great setup for the next series Gods of Gilyx and I can’t wait to see what happens next😍
ARC Review 4.5 stars Spice level is 5 Please check the triggers before reading. This is the final book in the Fourth Born series. I truly love anything that Shay writes and have been lucky enough to have ARC read almost all her books.
If you have read any of Shays other books this one will NOT disappoint.
Our MMC is Malak, the last of the fourth borns and hates the Calavask gods more than anything. Our FMC Calista is the last of the Calavask siblings who has waited for her destined mated and wanted to give Malak a chance to see her as she is before he knows who she truly is.
Another amazing book by shay Taylor! Malak hates the gods, calista is the goddess of life and suffering and Malaks fated mate. When their paths finally cross can she make him fall for her before he finds out who she is? The twists in their relationship throughout the book forces some difficult choices on both their sides. Their story drew me in and the development of their relationship throughout is amazing. Such an addictive storyline that I couldn’t put it down. This book answered a lot of questions I had throughout the series and I can’t wait for what Shay brings us next.
If you're this far in the series then you know how good it is. Following these Gods as they look for their fated mates is one of the best plot lines and some of the best characters.
The level of yearning these characters have is addictive. I also love how each one is slightly more unhinged than is ok. I absolutely love how feral they get before 'the big showdown'. The spice is always spicing in the best ways.... especially with Calista, and ...... I don't want to give spoilers because it was sooooo good, IFKYK!!
I loved reading about Calista. She was the Goddess who struggled the most with her emotions and that was very well written while having to work against the hardship of a mate who hated her family.
As always, all was not as it seemed. Especially when Gods are involved and can change memories and stories to suit their narrative. I really felt for Malak. He wanted a family and almost lost the love of his life from a second hesitation when past and future were colliding. You could feel their heartbreak.
These book had some of the best angsty 'touch her and die' lines.
Although this is the last book in the series, it also didn't feel like the end of a series because the underlying plot still has so much going on, with all the side characters. Who were just as entertaining in their own right!! While not feeling like this plot and these books were being forced to carry on. I can't wait to read more. Hopefully get some more all round HEA and a look into their futures.
I can't wait to read about Bexla!!!!! She was so unhinged but in the absolute best and addictive way!
Luther and Ares both broke me and healed me! Their stroy had been sizzling in the background. I thought I was going to fall out with Shay when I read what happened!!! My heart 💔😭.
I was extremely fortunate to receive this book as an Arc but all thoughts and opinions are my own and if you had read Shay's other books, especially the fourth born series, you'll know how addictive and special they are.
This is the fourth book in the Fourth Born Series and a really great ending to read. I love Calista and Malak and their story and reading about the other characters woven into each book. I really like all of Shay’s books but I think the Fourth Born are my favorites, especially Shadows of the Gods with Khalias the God of Death and this one with Malak the necromancer. So glad I found Shay’s books! I’m thankful to be on her Little Vipers Street Team and continue to read and re read and recommend her books 🖤💀😍
Wow! I don’t even know where to start this! If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would! I have loved every single book Shay has put out and this one is nothing short of AMAZING!! I have my favorites and Malak is definitely one of my absolute favorites from this realm! I absolutely love Calista! I could not get enough of either of them. When I say this book hit me in my feels I mean it! This was a roller coaster of emotions and I was here for it! I am sad that this series has come to an end though. I am so excited for the next series!!
I don’t know if there will ever be a book of Shay’s that I didn’t absolutely love.
Calista and Malak…Just when you think everything is gonna be alright Shay finds a way to rip your heart out, make you feel everything and then put it back together again. It hurts sooo good.
The tension in this book is unreal. The longing, the doubt, the way everything feels just out of reach.
The forced proximity, the forbidden love, and the SPICE👀 🥵
I will forever recommend a Shay Taylor book and I will tell it to anyone who will listen.
Torment of the Gods is the final book in the fourth series, and Shay Taylor really knows how to build you up and tear you down across the whole journey. By the end, you’re just waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Her character development is spot on, and the world-building is fantastic—you truly feel like you’re part of the story. I highly recommend all of Shay Taylor’s series, especially since they all intertwine in such a seamless way.
Every time I think I know what Shay Taylor’s next book will be like, I’m never correct. Her brilliant mind takes a story in a totally different direction, and I am obsessed with that.
Torment of the Gods was so entertaining, it fully had me hooked from start to finish 🖤. I know this was our goodbye to the Fourth Born series, but that ending didn’t feel like a goodbye to some major characters. Felt like a see you in the Gods of Gilyx , and I am 100% here for the ride. ARC reader review 🖤
