Imitation is the greatest form of flattery—unless it gets you killed.
Reeling from a painful breakup and the loss of her inheritance, Caroline Bingley moves to the magical community of Austen Heights. It’s charming, but not exactly bustling with opportunity—or the fae society she’s used to. Determined to rebuild her reputation and her bank account, she decides to host a party at Netherfield. But her plans go up in smoke when a body is discovered at the event.
Even worse, the victim was glamoured to look exactly like Caroline, leading her to believe she was the intended target. Caroline hires Jack, a handsome bodyguard, and together they attempt to unravel the clues and find the killer.
As the mystery unfolds, so does her resolve—but she can’t afford to risk her heart again. Can she unmask the murderer and untangle her feelings for Jack before it’s too late?
Pride and Prejudice and Potions is a collection of modern standalone cozy mysteries that retell the greatest love story of all time while revealing the secrets lurking underneath. Across twelve enchanting tales of entangled hearts, learn the stories that were never told and get to know these beloved characters like never before. Even Jane Austen couldn't have predicted this season of scandal and sorcery.
I just love this series and I love how it's getting better and better. Loved Caroline's character so much, I just love her. The mystery, cosy setting, romance everything is top notch and I loved her chemistry with Jack. I love the vibes of this series so much and I want to live there now, it's really heartwarming and magical❤️
So, I am not a fan of Caroline in the original book, and I wasn't sure how I'd feel about her here.
I loved this. She's got high fashion taste and still looks her nose up at people, but she's been through some stuff and she's ready to make it on her own...as long as she still has someone to boss around. I really loved the mystery in this one and the small details included that made Caroline feel more relatable.
AHHH what a fun read!! If it wasn’t for me working, I would’ve devoured this all in one sitting!
I like how it just continues on from book1 and we get to see how some past characters are doing! It was a perfect comfort fall read that made me want to curl up under a blanket with a pumpkin spice latte.🩷
Such a fun, cute, short mystery story with a romance subplot, it really couldn’t have been better!🤭🩷
I'm really enjoying these modern pride and prejudice retellings. Each story focuses on a character from the original and has snippets from key events of the story. This book focuses on Caroline Bingley, and it was fantastically done as it made me feel empathy for her. There's a mysterious magical mirror, a murderer on the loose, and a blossoming romance between Caroline and her new bodyguard. On top of that she's trying to impress Lady Catherine de Bourgh with her interior design skills to hopefully be hired and gain her financial independence after her family's scandals. There's drama, gossip, mysteries and new love, and we get to see another side of this character and her journey of growth.
PRIDE & PREJUDICE &POTIONS JANE AUSTIN COZY MYSTERY BY MICHELLE COWART Caroline's story. Release day set for the 30th of September 2025. 5 ✨ ✨ ✨ ✨ ✨s Another stunning cover for this book. Absolutely gorgeous. I adored the chemistry between Caroline and Jack ♥ I love cozy murder mystery with the right amount of romance. Just makes me want to curl up with a pumpkin spice latte and light a pumpkin candle 🎃 So excited for book 3 and as I said earlier this series is going to be epic
my thoughts: I think I’ve stumbled into a streak of five-star reads, because—much like Lizzy’s tale—Caroline’s story did not disappoint in the least. Admittedly, I could live without the fae elements, as they’re beginning to feel a touch overused, yet I must confess: this book would not carry the same charm without the shimmer of magic woven through it. One of the moments I loved most was Jack, the MMC, seeing through Caroline’s glamour from the very beginning—and choosing her anyway. Even in her rawest, most unguarded moments (ugly crying included), he never wavered. That kind of steadfast devotion is the very thing Austen herself would have applauded. Though Pride and Prejudice and Potions is not finished yet, I sincerely hope we’ll glimpse more of Caroline and Jack in the books to come—whether in passing, in subtle cameos, or perhaps even in a delightful bonus chapter devoted to them. However it unfolds, this installment earns yet another five-star crown on my shelf, and I’m already anticipating the next.
This story is PERFECT for my fellow readers who love Austen and might have rewatched the movie and other adaptations a million times. Also perfect for this spooky season with witches, mystery, and more 👻 Join me in falling in love with Austen Heights and the Pride & Prejudice & Potions series that'll continue to be released for weeks (and maybe months (; ) to come!
Book 2 in the Pride and Prejudice and Potions series, this time we follow along with FMC Caroline Bingley, who has moved to Austen Heights and joined her brother and Darcy at Netherfield manor. Hoping to get her interior design business started, Caroline throws a large party. Unfortunately a party goer is found dead, and even weirder, has been glamoured to look like Caroline. Caroline immediately suspects the owner of The Trinket Trove, where she had sort of stolen yet also paid for a magical mirror. Regardless of the police investigation, Caroline makes it her mission to discover the culprit, while also working on her first big interior design client's house.
MMC Jack, Caroline's assistant's brother, is standing in as her personal bodyguard in case the murderer tries to strike again. As Caroline is investigating the murder, and Jack assists, they start to get closer than they had intended...
I really liked Jack's character. Jack is this handsome bodyguard, who has a sneaky secret of his own. Caroline has some moments where she is a bit annoying, but overall her character is fun and has a very useful ability to glamour herself and other things around her. This ability comes in real handy when she needs to do some investigating, after hours, at the Trinket Trove. Was the murderer really after Caroline? Or has the glamour thrown them off the real suspect?
And Netherfield, I would sooo love to live in a house that is magical! The house cleans up after you, opens passages and doorways to get you where you need within the house, and even brings warm drinks and snacks when they are needed. It would be amazing to live in a house like that!
This was a cute cozy mystery and I look forward to reading the next character Mary's story!
Some fav quotes: "I turned to Jack. "I'm willing to hire you on a trial basis, considering your attractiveness stays at tolerable levels.""
"I glanced up at Jack. He was absorbed by his book, his amber eyes flying across the pages. His mouth formed a little 'o' and his eyebrows shot up. Who knew that a man could be so attractive while reading?"
""How could you tell that my feet were killing me? I'm very good at hiding it." "I'm very good at noticing." My stomach flipped at his words, which was ridiculous. I was absolutely, under no circumstances, going to fall for my bodyguard."
""Goodnight," I shut the door gently behind him and buried myself under my cruelty-free, Pegasus-down duvet."
""You're so freaking dazzling that you bring life and beauty to everything you touch."
This was such a cute and cozy murder mystery with just the right sprinkle of a modern twist on Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. The pacing was quick and engaging, pulling me along effortlessly as the story followed Caroline Bingley navigating life after a breakup and the loss of her family’s inheritance.
The characters were a joy to read. Jack and Caroline had such great chemistry, and watching their romance slowly blossom made the story even more fun. Caroline’s wit and determination gave her depth, while Jack’s charm made him a perfect match. My favorite side character, though, has to be Netherfield—because who doesn’t love a magical house with a personality of its own? That element added such a whimsical flair and made the story even more memorable.
Overall, this was an incredibly enjoyable read, and I love that there are going to be twelve books in this series. With so many potential directions and characters to focus on, I can’t wait to see what mysteries (and romances) unfold next. It’s the perfect cozy series to curl up with, especially if you love Austen-inspired stories with a modern, magical twist.
I absolutely love this series as I have been very lucky to have been both a beta reader and now an arc for the majority of these books.
If you love cosy murder mystery’s and cosy light fantasy then these are the books for you! It’s the romance of Jane Austin meets, small town, meets light fantasy with fae and witches meets cosy autumn feels.
Caroline’s story is one of my faves- recently disowned by her father and coming to terms with the fact her sister killed for her she is determined to make it on her own as an interior designer. She’s been re doing the magical house her brother owns and has a party so the rich can see her work. What she doesn’t expect is that a murder will happen! She’s determined to investigate herself and hires her assistants hot brother as her bodyguard.
This is a great light easy read and you will be drawn into the story and wanting to read the next instalment. The series is written by 4 different authors each writing 3 books
Here we follow Caroline and Jack, who we meet in book 1. Caroline and Jack have the perfect chemistry that was making me just smile and swoon the entire time. This story was a murder mystery with the perfect amount of romance to it. The story carried a bit of magic to it because of the far magic that was subtle throughout the story. This book is perfect for fans of Jane Austen, Practical Magic and cozy fantasy stories.
Fav Quote: “I am not the best man for you. But I could stand in and help you out.”
“Hey. Sorry, this house sometimes has a mind of its own and it led me down a passage. I swear I didn’t know it would lead to your room.” 🏚️
✨ Pride & Prejudice & Potions 2: Caroline’s Story was such a fun, magical read! I’m really loving this series – they’re cozy, quick and just the right mix of whimsy, mystery and romance.
Caroline Bingley might not be everyone’s favourite in Austen’s world, but this book completely changed how I see her. I loved watching her rebuild her life in Austen Heights – glamorous parties, fae glamour and of course, a murder mystery where she’s the intended target! 🔮🕵️♀️
Enter Jack, her new bodyguard, and the sparks fly. Their chemistry had me smiling the whole way through – the banter, the tension and those tender moments when the walls start to come down. The mystery itself was clever and twisty without being too heavy, keeping the story pacy and addictive.
💜 If you like cozy fantasy mixed with swoony romance and clever mysteries, this series is a total treat. Can’t wait to read the next one!
This book was delightful. I was prepared to love it, but I didn’t know how much I would. Pride and prejudice in the modern world with magic and fae and a murder—wow! I loved this much more compassionate take on Caroline Bingley; in Jane Austen’s version she is backbiting and shallow but in Michelle Cowart’s she is fabulous and strong, if a little wounded. Finding out the real reason she broke up Mr. Bingley and Jane made me LOVE her. Needless to say, I was highly invested in her personal goals, her murder investigation, and her satisfying romance.
Oh, and I love Netherfield. It’s a sentient enchanted mansion! ‘Nuff said.
I definitely found Caroline more sympathetic and likeable in this story! The flow of the story is natural and I loved that the house is its own sentient character, and quite possibly my favorite one! It made the story so cozy. And the recipe in the back: the best surprise!
If you love a bodyguard romance, a magic mirror, and murder mystery this is a great book. Caroline is trying to build her business so she doesn't have to rely on family financially. Jack is protecting her after a murder happened during one of her parties. They are a cute couple and work well together. I look forward to seeing their relationship grow through the series.
I definitely enjoyed the romance part of the book, but the mystery part, a little less. It felt that Caroline and Jack should have asked more about the mirror but they always asked the wrong questions. Also Caroline's clothes'descriptions got a little too much for me after a while.
Apart from that, still a solid read, better to read Book 1 than reading this standalone.
I have to admit, I disliked Caroline Bingley in the original Pride and Prejudice quite intensely, so it felt like quite the brave move for any author to attempt a full character remould... but Michelle Cowart absolutely outdid herself! I actually fell in love with the new Caroline.
Caroline is dealing with some heavy stuff in this too-short novella (yes, that’s a complaint; it absolutely needed to be a full-length novel!)... She's been disinherited, dumped, AND her sister is a murderer, no less! Despite all that, she maintains a fantastic, chin-up attitude, and a brilliant sense of style, working hard to build a successful career with her flair for (fashion and) interiors.
Things get complicated when someone glamoured to look like her is murdered, and her brother insists she needs a protective bodyguard. Jack, the constantly watchful and thoughtful bodyguard her assistant finds, and the sentient house she lives in with her brother, are easily the best elements of the entire book.
The second book in this delightful series of cozy fantasy mysteries stars the indomitable Caroline Bingley, sister to Charles Bingley, in the world of Pride and Prejudice and Potions. I blew through this book rather quickly, so let's dive in to this review.
POV: First person POV Character(s): Caroline Bingley Verb Tense: Past Trigger Warnings: None Spice Level: Low, kisses only
This series of books has been put together by a group of different authors, so as I read through them, I'm getting glimpses into the different authors' styles of writing. I did note some differences between the writing styles of the first book and this one, but there was nothing too jarring. Both books have the delightfully cozy feel, the atmosphere created in this fun little world, and the motley cast of characters who add so much to the story.
I'm itching to find out what's brought the Bingley family and Darcy to Austen Heights, as it was hinted there's some purpose to their move here that's bigger than the individual stories in the series, but the first two books have definitely done a good job at giving us only glimpses into this overarching mystery. And just like the first book, this one does a fantastic job of being an entire arc on its own, complete with a curious murder case to solve.
Caroline Bingley is our protagonist for this little story, and while we had a brief view of her in the first book, this is where she gets to shine. The disgraced and disinherited daughter of the Bingley highborn fae family, Caroline is trying to step out on her own and build a design empire so she can stop relying on her brother Charles to finance her life. Having gone through the betrayal of her fiancé breaking off his engagement after her father disinherited her, Caroline is both wary of others and tired of being a negative topic of gossip for her ruined reputation. To top it off, after what happened with her sister Louisa, Caroline's worried she'll only ever be seen as a grasping, greedy woman who just wants a rich husband to bankroll her lifestyle.
Aiming to present her design prowess to all of Charles's friends and associates and secure the opportunity to do interior design for the wealthy De Bourgh family, Caroline hosts a party at the Bingley estate in Austen Heights, decorating it in effortless style. But a murder at the party halts the festivities and leaves the Bingleys wondering who wants Caroline dead when it's revealed the victim is wearing a glamour to look just like Caroline.
This was a fun romp, honestly. I found it interesting how Caroline's character developed throughout this story. She starts off a bit stuck-up and distanced from others, trying to make it on her own without having to rely on anyone else for help, and she looks down on most of the people in Austen Heights, especially the Bennets. But she does experience growth and deals with vulnerability that leads to trusting others as the story progresses, and it's really quite fun to see her learn new things about the people in her life.
The other characters in this story were fun, too. I loved Caroline's friend and assistant Sydney, and her brother Jack was a delight.
I'm still stuck on the magical home the Bingleys have purchased, though. I love a good magical house. It always makes for more exciting stories, and this one didn't fail to deliver. Caroline seems to have a good relationship with the house because it continuously delivers little treats and things she might need or offers her a back or hidden entrance to the places she needs to go. The house also helps her avoid encountering people she'd rather not. Honestly? Talk about a dream home! And I thought it was adorable that she spent her time thanking the house or resting a hand on the walls to show her gratitude.
The storyline for this murder mystery was good with a few little twists that kept me on my toes. I enjoyed playing detective alongside Caroline and trying to figure out the whodunnit before the grand reveal. And watching the way Caroline's relationship with Jack developed over the course of the story was sweet, too.
Overall this second installment in the series continued to deliver the cozy vibes I adore and kept me turning the pages (or rather, pressing my Kindle Oasis buttons) to see what would happen next. And now I'll have to scoot right along and read the next book in the series and maybe get another little tease for why the Bingleys have moved to Austen Heights.
I did receive this as an ARC, but this is my honest review of the story.
A cozy bodyguard romance featuring Caroline Bingley as she works to solve a murder that occurred in her household.
Caroline Bingley was recently disowned from her family's wealth and is now looking for interior design work in Austen Heights to build up her bank account. To showcase her skills, she hosts a party at her brother Charles' manor. Unfortunately, things take a dark turn when someone is found dead. And to make matters worse, the murder victim was glamoured to look just like Caroline. Things have gotten too personal for Caroline to stand down, so she decides to get to the bottom of this case herself. Luckily, she doesn't have to go it alone when she hires a strong and handsome bodyguard by the name of Jack to protect her as she sleuths. As the two work together, the case thickens as do their feelings for one another.
This one was just as fun as the first! I honestly don't remember much about Caroline from the original "Pride and Prejudice," but I'm going to assume she wasn't the most likeable character ever. I had my hesitations about her at first. After all, she seems to be very surface level; caring most about the clothes she wears and the people that she impresses. However, one is soon shown her selfless side which had me appreciating her as a person before long. And besides, sometimes it is fun to follow a drama queen with a love for fancy things.
The case in this wasn't nearly as intense or exciting as the first, but it was also less predictable, in my opinion. I really enjoyed seeing how Caroline went about investigating, as she is pretty headstrong and unflappable, much like Lizzy from book one. I must say, I didn't exactly expect who the murderer was, but I probably should of, because there were really no other options of who else it could have been.
A fun thing about this one is that I know very little about Caroline's character, so her romance with Jack was completely new to me. Their relationship is really wholesome. Jack will protect her no matter what, but he isn't possessive or controlling of Caroline in any way. Caroline knows that she shouldn't date her bodyguard, but that doesn't stop her from catching feelings for Jack. Watching these two shamelessly flirt with one another was quite a joy, and I enjoyed the fact that it took these two most of the book to become a couple.
Overall, "Caroline's Story" was a great addition to this cozy reimagining of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice." Caroline and Jack were really fun main characters to follow and their romance was also very sweet. The mystery may not have been the most engaging, but it wasn't the most predictable either. I really enjoyed returning to Austen Heights, and I look forward to diving back into this world again very soon!
ARC Review – Thank you for the opportunity to read this story early.
📖 Plot Caroline Bingley moves to Austen Heights after a painful breakup and the loss of her inheritance. I received a digital ARC of 'Pride & Prejudice & Potions: Caroline’s Story' by Michelle Cowart in exchange for an honest review.
We’ve been a sickie, sleep deprived house lately so I know this won’t be my most eloquent review ever but bear with me. 😂🫶🏻 I was so excited about this ARC and I LOVED Caroline’s story! I love a good mildly forbidden love interest and the assistant’s brother who’s also her bodyguard? Perfect. I also really enjoyed that Caroline is definitely a diva but like a bit of a cutie softie on the inside and seeing her lean into that a bit more. I also LOVE sentient houses and her relationship with Netherfield House gave me such Nesta/House of Wind vibes! Like paying such close attention to her needs and kinda momma bearing over Caroline but also maybe shipping her and Jack just a little bit? Cutie house. 🥰
The mystery element sucked me in so hard and the REVEAL???? I literally told my husband “I need you to go if you’re going to because I just hit a mic drop moment in my book”. 😂 (Don’t feel bad, he’s exactly where he wants to be). I don’t know how to say more without spoilers so that is where I will leave you.
This was such a good book 2 and I’m so excited to continue in the rest of the books as they get released!!! ❤️❤️
TLDR: Start with Lizzy and then do Caroline. Mary is releasing 10/14 and this lovely, cozy, witchy, mystery series is set to walk you all the way through Christmas and beyond as the other 10 books are released so just join the journey!!!! ITS SO FUN!!!!
After her disownment and fall from grace, Caroline Bingley is redesigning her life as an interior designer. Her biggest hope is to win the bid to design Lady Catherine de Bourgh’s formal dining room at Rosings Park. With her assist Sydney by her side she has a grand party to showcase her work at her brothers Netherfield house. All is going well until someone is murdered at the party who’s been glamoured to look just like Caroline. A magic mirror is missing, along with a trinket she bought just for the party, and needing security she turns to Sydney’s brother Jack. Can she save her heart and solve the case or will she get heartbroken yet again?
An imaginative and fun take on Jane Austen‘s original socialite character, Caroline Bingley, a tad of insecurity, mixed with a bit of magic, touch of mystery and splash of romance that makes for a light and enjoyable read. I love a new classic with a modern, paranormal, cozy mystery, romance novel. I received an ARC copy but I absolutely adore the quaint small town setting and the quirky characters created in Caroline’s story as well as the mix of the old time customs and new electronics. Can’t wait for the next installment of Mary’s story as they keep getting better with hints of drama to come!
I'll start off by saying I'm not familiar with the original story, however I have read book one of this series prior to this, and even though this series is written by different authors, it all seems to flow seamlessly. I mean, of course there will be some overlap in the overall story, but in a way, it makes it all small chunks of one larger story.
Reading this had also changed my impression of Caroline Bingley. When I read the first book, I wasn't so fond of her character, and I'm not familiar with how her character is in the original setting, but seeing things from her point of view gives you a different outlook and opinion of the character, it can change the way you see things.
Personally, I found this one to be less of a mystery than the first book, the focus seemed to be more on Caroline's character development in my opinion, but it still contained that mystery element, which I loved. And the no spice is an added bonus as well, a clean read. Furthermore, it was written well, in an engaging style that keeps you wanting more.
Safe to say, I really enjoyed this book, and am looking forward to seeing how the series continues.
This was such a cute and cozy magical murder mystery with the perfect sprinkle of Jane Austen charm and modern fantasy flair! I loved following Caroline Bingley as she navigated life after heartbreak and the loss of her family’s inheritance - it was heartfelt, witty, and full of cozy mystery goodness.
Caroline and Jack had amazing chemistry - their slow-burn romance was so fun to watch unfold. Caroline’s sharp wit and determination made her a fantastic heroine, and Jack’s charm balanced her perfectly. My favorite surprise? Netherfield itself! A magical house with a personality of its own? Yes, please. That touch of whimsy made the story even more enchanting.
Overall, this was such an enjoyable and comforting read. The worldbuilding is clever, the characters are endearing, and the cozy mystery kept me engaged from start to finish. I can’t wait for the rest of the series - if each book is this delightful, I’ll be first in line for every single one!
Caroline’s Story surprised me in the best way. It takes a character I didn’t really understand before and lets her step into her own world — one full of magic, mystery, and unexpected heart. The writing is easy to follow and has a cozy, whimsical feel that makes it hard to put down. Caroline’s voice is sharp and funny, but you also get to see her soft side as she tries to rebuild her life after loss and heartbreak.
The plot blends a light murder mystery with sweet romance in a way that feels fresh, not forced. I especially enjoyed watching Caroline team up with Jack — their banter and growing connection added depth to the story without overshadowing the mystery.
What stood out most to me was the worldbuilding — Austen Heights feels alive and magical, and the mix of cozy fantasy with nods to Pride and Prejudice was just the right touch. If you like character-driven stories with a touch of enchantment and a satisfying mystery, this one’s worth a read.
I'm really enjoying this series! I appreciate that these cozy mysteries stay true to the Pride & Prejudice characters, but with a modern, paranormal twist, and that the mysteries aren't blatantly obvious. There's always a bit of surprise with who the real killer is, which is enjoyable.
True to form, Caroline Bingley is self-centered and arrogant in this book. But I love that the author doesn't make her character insufferable. Instead, there's more of a humorous take to Caroline's arrogance. There are moments where Caroline's goodness shines through, and Jack is so willing to stand up to her and humble her when needed.
Also, I was drooling when Caroline and Jack were eating the pumpkin chocolate chip bread, and was thrilled to see it's an included recipe! Looking forward to making some!
Loved this retelling of Caroline’s story I couldn’t put it down until it was finished. Its’s such a cute and cozy murder mystery with just the right sprinkle of a modern twist. The characters were a joy to read. Jack and Caroline had such great chemistry the romance slowly blossoming. I love love love Netherfield house with its knowing what a person needs.
I really enjoyed how the paranormal elements gave the classic story a whole new vibe. I am so looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
I had the pleasure of receiving this as an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion.
I've never been a fan of Caroline Bingley until this cozy mystery by author Michelle Cowart.
Caroline is still the rich, elitist character you are familiar with from the classic Pride and Prejudice, but Cowart gives her a backstory, a goal, and depth we've never read before.
I found myself empathetic to Caroline's desire to make a name for herself and create a business without the money her brother offered. She'd made a decision that I respected despite the fact that it meant she'd be disinherited. Her dealing with her assistant and a shop owner was so on brand with how I'd imagine Caroline would interact with others in the desire to be and get what she wants. But, a murder at her event only causes her to hire a bodyguard and try to solve the murder while pursuing her dreams simultaneously.
I enjoyed the off-limits bodyguard trope, but wanted some more chemistry between the characters. It was sweet how their interest in each other developed and progressed.
I'm so excited to read this whole series and see how characters I've loved in the classic story get a new cozy fantasy life!
