This is my first book by this author and it’s promising. I’m curious to see how Heather copes as she progresses in law enforcement.
We’re introduced to newly qualified rookie deputy Heather King, the first book in the series of ten books. Driven by a desire to uncover the mystery of her sister’s disappearance, she joins the force. Currently, she’s learning the ropes.
On her first day, she’s thrown into the deep end, assisting on a murder case alongside an experienced detective.
Heather possesses a unique ability to spot patterns faster than some seasoned detectives. This makes her an invaluable asset as a detective, though it often leads to conflicts with the sheriff.
A serial killer is on the loose, targeting young girls with striking similarities to his ex-wife. He believes he’s saving them from becoming like her.
When Heather breaks protocol, she faces serious trouble. Will she survive to explain herself?
I received this book for free through Kindle , and honestly, the only reason I picked it up was the suspiciously high Goodreads rating.
From the very first pages, it was obvious that the writing was juvenile at best. The protagonist, rookie Deputy Heather King, is your standard-issue "fresh on the job but somehow notices what everyone else missed" female law enforcement character, a plot template so worn out it's practically see-through. There's nothing nuanced or surprising about her. The character development, if you can even call it that, reads like a checklist someone ran through quickly before hitting "publish." And the story itself was contrived from start to finish with all the hallmarks of AI assistance. A series of murders at truck stops across a small Midwestern county, a rookie who stumbles into a deadly trap. Not one element of this book felt original, and the entire plot could genuinely have been condensed into about five pages without losing a single thing of value. I only pushed through to the end out of morbid curiosity....like slowing down to look at a car accident, wondering just how bad it could get. Regarding the glowing ***** star reviews. I dug through some of the profiles and noticed that several reviewer profiles follow a clear pattern where multiple five-star reviews are posted in rapid succession, all using similar language and structure. That's not how real readers behave. Real readers have varied tastes, mixed opinions, and don't churn out identical looking posts across dozens of books in a short window. I think most critical thinkers will see it immediately.
Which brings me to Kate Bold herself. A quick look reveals that "Kate Bold" has over 100 publictions across more than a dozen series Goodreads, with titles cranked out at a pace that defies any reasonable understanding of human writing capacity. Just the Heather King series alone, which Get Out kicks off, already has 10 books planned (released one per month), and the Harley Cole series has 16 books. That volume, produced that quickly, with that level of formulaic consistency, strongly suggests this is not a single human author sitting down at a desk.
Whether it's a team of writers, an AI pipeline, or some combination of both, the result is exactly what you'd expect, a factory-line fiction that hits all the genre beats, all derivative and cliché. No one with a genuine appreciation for storytelling should be rating this five stars.
GR states it won't be published until November 2025... perhaps this is for mass publication? IDK?
Regardless, I just finished, and think this is one of the best books she's written. The characters are real, the plot is strong and well developed, the story reads smoothly drawing you into its intensity, and it is a definite page turner where you can't put it down because you're hoping to find out clues or more info on the next page just so you can take a break only to grab you again and keep you reading.
I just finished a book she wrote and was very frustrated with how she portrayed her law enforcement characters. They were all so stereotypical that it completely ruined the book. This was written thoughtfully.
Instead of spoiling anything, below is part of a spot-on book review taken off the front home page of GR by another reviewer: Reader Review for the Killing Game

This was an intense read which as usual draws me in. I enjoyed the characters and the story. Unlike with most thrillers in this you’re told who the killer is when he is introduced into the story. I enjoyed this different approach. There was a lot of repetition between the main character and her partner mostly non- verbally. He’d compliment her, she would be surprised at his praise from her “reserved partner”. The lack of variation became tiresome. For the most part I enjoyed this book.

Get Out ( A Heather King Suspense Thriller Book One( Kate Bold
A young Rookie after a serial killer is finding her way in the police department. She has a good mentor and as they work the case ideas keep coming to her. She listens to her inner self and tries to track. She also lost a Sister years ago and wonders what happened to her. These stories start to come together.
Usually, 100 per cent my cup of tea in terms of genre and storyline; however, I found the main character conceited and annoying. Further, a 'rookie' would not be given that much responsibility and no way would they be permitted to get away with breaking protocol and going against rules. Continual referencing to the sister was also annoying. I put it down before I finished it. A pass from me.
Good read, but too many mentions of the missing sister. Every chapter almost has a nod to her and being the reason for becoming an officer. Annoying really but besides that, a good book
This was an interesting story. A woman becomes a police officer and on her first day on the job gets to be involved with a serial murder case. She lost her sister when she was younger. Her sister had disappeared and hadn't been found. Highly recommended.
Absolutely brilliant book couldn't put it down superb well written and a great cast of characters and story line loved it kept you guessing right to the end can't wait to read more from this author
This is probably the fourth or fifth book. I’ve read by this author and each and every one of them is better than the others. She has a great way of writing and putting the details into the storyline, which make it even more interesting.
