Perhaps the weakest installment so far
I enjoyed the story, but i can't shake the feeling that everything important happens off screen.
For example, Ragnar and the other Kroggians go off to raid Buldoun for the attack they committed in the previous volume. But the only thing we, as the reader, get to see is a quick recap when Ragnar tells the story of his adventure after everyone returns.
The Archmage of Buldoun is investigating who is responsible for the attack on Krogheim, but we see little of that. Mostly, it seems like an excuse to leave Claudia with the Pettits family, so we get to see the family fun times while the mystery is resolved in the background. Then there's a big reveal when the culprit is exposed, which leads to one of the few times that Gregory's actions seem to matter. And yet, even then the consequences of his actions seem pretty small in the grand scheme of things. I guess time will tell.
What we're left with are little episodic adventures of day to day living, and i think this is where the big problem of giving your MC the magic of foresight comes into play. Gregory is so good at seeing the path forward that there are very few surprises for him, or the reader. The interesting bits happen when Greg's foresight fails him, but that so rarely happens.
I do hope that the next installment will give Greg and his family a more important role in the action. Last time, his actions saved an entire city and changed the course of a war. But this time he... saved one innocent woman? Maybe? These are the main characters, so why are they being relegated to supporting roles?
