Fated mates, supernaturals of all kinds, a heroine who has no idea what she is, and an evil who is out for them all.
All I wanted was to keep my head above water. To survive long enough to hit my eighteenth birthday so I could escape the nightmare that my homelife had become. But all of that was turned upside down the moment they showed up.
The best friend from my past. The surly brooder. The kind-hearted nerd. The king of campus. The dark one.
They say they’re here to give me a fresh start in a place where I’m safe, warm, and cared for. And I can’t deny the pull I feel to all five of them. The buzz that lights beneath my skin when they touch me. And for the first time, I feel like I might belong.
But not everything is as it seems. These guys have secrets. Ones that will rip my world wide open. But when a dark evil begins stalking us, we’re all in for the fight of our lives…
The Supernaturals of Castle Academy Box Set is the complete series that includes Legacy of Shadows, Anchor of Secrets, and Destiny of Ashes
I have some very mixed feelings about his series as a whole resulting in what I believe to be a generous 2 stars. This series is told in first person with Leighton as the FMC so there are a ton of unanswered questions.
Let’s start with my biggest gripe; spicy scenes do not belong in books where characters are underage, it didn’t add anything to the plot and instead made it uncomfortable to read, I had to skip past them all.
Realistically this is a trilogy that genuinely could’ve been a duology or even a standalone book considering majority of the “plot” is just filler that unnecessarily repeats itself two to three times, and because of this none of the main antagonists are properly fleshed out.
Antagonist 1: Chloe - typical high school mean girl complete with two cronies who follow her every word. She grew up being told that she was the strongest anchor around and thus would be anchored to “The Crescents”. Aside from being a high school bully that was upset her destiny had been swept out from under her feet she ultimately didn’t add much to the overall story aside from some repetitive bitchy comments that felt incredibly juvenile (which I guess made sense since they’re all in high school, so again I ask why spicy scenes?) and in true cliche fashion her “go-to” insult included calling Leighton a slut, which when you think about the fact she grew up in a supernatural town with the concept of multiple mates doesn’t even make sense, how did she learn this word and how to apply it? This behaviour is inconsistent with the world it is set in and pulls you out of the story.
Antagonist 2: Damien - Son of the Vampire ruler, Damien also grew up convinced he belonged to The Crescent bond and when his mark didn’t show was convinced the rest of the bond had conspired against him and performed some kind of block to prevent his mark from showing, clearly a delusional young man. Damien commits some pretty heinous acts in Book 1 and the start of book 2 (assault, kidnapping and torture, and murder). Once Leighton manages to escape early on book 2 Damien just vanishes from the story except for a trap he sets for the MMCs (again the whole series is told from Leighton’s POV so we don’t actually get to see this trap we just know they set off for a cave after a reported sighting and get ambushed resulting in Colt getting injured) and some other small snippets and mentions only to pop back up in the last 80% of book 3 after the reveal of the main(?) antagonists plan.
Finally antagonist number 3: Patrick - leader of the dragons. I guess he was the big bad because his actions are what lead to the very rushed and completely unsatisfactory climax of the story. Seriously, there’s another kidnapping and a “fight” that lasted 13 pages.
The main characters themselves also leave a lot to be desired, Leighton has an incredibly tragic backstory filled with abuse and loneliness, but she very much falls under the bland Mary-Sue archetype, if they weren’t fated mates I couldn’t imagine why any of the MMCs would pay her any attention. Again, the fact that they’re in high school plays an important role in this series because Leighton being 17 and incredibly stupid with the survival skills of a doorknob is the only reason anything happens.
The MMCs were varying degrees of only ok with Trace being the worst, he was the cliche angsty MMC filled with self-loathing and went from not wanting Leighton there at all to not wanting her to do anything for herself leading to almost no character development on her part, by the end of the series she hasn’t even really learned to control her magic.
Plot lines were half developed at best and kind of left to fall apart: shadow demons casually peppered into the story, somehow working with Damien and Patrick but also not developed further than they have venom and gave some to Damien for some unknown reason, the phoenix mark that magically shows up on Leighton that also doesn’t get explored or developed further than it probably amplifies the spell to boost their magic - side note, Leighton’s idiocy really shines through when she is explicitly told no one can know about this phoenix mark and fails her first day back at school, it’s on her chest ffs! How did she fail this so quickly?! All she had to do was NOT SHOW HER CHEST and she still failed.
Overall, I think I finished this series out of pure spite more than actual enjoyment, which is a shame because I have enjoyed some of Tessa Hale’s other works.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
🌶️ This review is for the three book omnibus which includes Legacy of Shadows, Anchor of Secrets and Destiny of Ashes. This is a spicy series set amongst a group of seniors at a supernatural preparatory academy.
It is definitely geared for young adults. Starts mild but by the second book there are frequent sex scenes between our female lead, Leighton and the five teens she is eventually mated to. Yeah, it’s a reverse harem/why choose storyline which is a constant repeat… but then the plot as a whole is a constant repeat.
Leighton has been raised by an incredibly abusive mother and is rescued by her childhood best friend whom she hasn’t seen or heard from in eight years. Cole and his friend Rowan whisk her from Louisiana to Rhode Island where she will attend their prep school while slowly introducing her to their supernatural world.
You’ll find vampires, wolf shifters, dragon shifters, casters (magicians) and demons and a lot of them have serious attitude/bullying problems like you’d find in your average high school. The guys are keeping a lot of secrets, but it’s slowly revealed in dribs and drabs.
Long story short- Leighton’s boys are top of the food chain and her introduction ruffles a lot of feathers.
Given her history of parental abuse, Leighton has panic attacks constantly, horrific nightmares, a severe lack of self esteem which causes her to doubt herself all of the time and then we toss in bullying situations, gaslighting, her frequently being abducted and fainting spells.
The girl is a hot mess, and yet the boys seem to often want to treat it by sedating her. It gets old fast, especially once this girl whose magic failed to spark starts (eventually) sparking. Sparking, misfiring… whatever. And she’s often told by the guys how much they love her but it’s not just physical, even though the sexual games they give her (good girl, being dominated and objectified) are not really portrayed as loving.
If she isn’t doubting herself then the guys are doubting themselves… or someone else is doubting them. Our leads are a group of severely broken people and the antagonists (adults and teens) are more overly dramatic drama queen caricatures than believable leaders of paranormal clans.
The idea was good, but it reads more as a serial-of-the-week rather than a tradition story with how often this girl’s life is in peril. Would I read it again? No. Would I read the author again? Maybe… if she has something written more for grownups rather than teen soap opera.
Lighton is a young woman with a troubled past who is loved and missed by her best friend Colton. Colton’s father and him would take vacations together with Lighton’s father and her to the beach and spend time together in the summer with their families. But when Leighton’s father died her mother didn’t approve of her relationship with the Carmichael’s and took Leighton away from the friendship that she had with them and then began to abuse her daughter just to make her unhappy about her life and make her feel unwanted. When she was 17: Cole returned to find that she was in a very bad situation and took her away with him. His home has three other young men living in the home with him now and share the home with Cole and his guardian. If you want more details about this story please feel free to read this fun and exciting series of books. It’s a little steamy and it’s not for everyone young but it’s for the adults who want it a little steamy but not too much. It has action and a good plot and a great storyline. The ending is very fun too.
I love Tessa Hale. She has a way of pulling the readers in and locking them into her stories. This one is no different. So be warned once you get started on this book expect nothing to get done. You are not going to want to put it down. The males in this books are all different in their personalities. You end up finding the one you really like but find yourself liking them all. The protagonist is so delicate that it makes them men feel huge. Different types of shifters with different gifts. They do what needs to be done with the help of others. Loved this series.
Spoilerish…I liked the world and setup but can we stop with main characters making snap illogical decisions over and over? How many times is she going to do the same thing? I will read the next book to see if this changes and to support the author.
I also hate the bad girl as she is behaving illogically as well. In my opinion, a cunning and crafty person wouldn’t publicly expose herself so much.
Good world, a few editing issues, lots of different creatures. IMO, twilight tropes are heavy in this one, but is that a bad thing?
I loved this whole series. Leelee is a survivor, so fierce. She went through hell, but came out stronger every time. Trace, and Dash are my two favorite of her guys, but I loved all of them. Great characters, great world building. Wonderful side characters. Horrible side characters. So much action. Lots of wanna smack a biotch for the mean girl bullies. Lots of steam. I absolutely loved that ending!!! I can't wait to read about Cillian next.
I actually really enjoyed this book. I wasn't sure since they were in High school and it's a spicy book. There was a great balance of spice and plot. Just like any other book it won't be for everyone. It was cool having the different supernatural species in a bond together.
I liked the story but it dragged on like you wouldn't believe. Too slow moving to the point I had to skim. First book literally was nothing but her moving in with the guys and getting started in the school. I really think this could have easily been done in 1 novel. The pace was just too dang slow. Unfortunate because it had promise.
I was surprised how quickly I read this series until I realized It was because I couldn't put it down. Really interesting mix of characters and their relationship with each other. Different take on the paranormal world. Adult situations but that just made the characters unique.
I read this series when each book was separate and it is fantastic Tessa is a wonderful author that makes you feel like you are there. I highly recommend reading this series
This book/series has it all! From steamy sences to plot twists to overbearing alphas and head strong FMC. This series does not disappoint! You will want to read and not put it down until done. Must read!
It was good, but felt like the ending could have been better. Also, think some of the scenes were repetitive. Capture, evade, capture, evade. I think the plot could have been a little better too.
Every time I read this series it always sends my emotions into overdrive. I love the ups and downs and the fact that no matter what Leighton NEVER GIVES UP.
I could not put down my ereader once, this series is so good I want to keep reading more of what’s to come. If you like shifters, demons, casters, vampires and so much more with drama adding twists and turns, and a great ending you love this series.
This was a fun read although a little cheesy at times and it seems o repeat t similar events so I sort of rushed through the end. But, if you're new to reading fantasy romance this a a good story to add to your list.
Leighton is a supernatural, but she never manifested. Her power has been blocked and her Mother was abusive. But she has five mates who need her to bond with them.
I finished this entire thing in 2 days. I could not put it down. I absolutely loved this. I wish they weren't in highschool but the plot was very compelling. They mention my king Killiannnn ahhhh.
