A provocative deep dive into how technology is wrecking our hormones and our health—and the powerful tools you need to reclaim your well-being and thrive.

Stress Nation provides answers to the lingering questions many people have about why they constantly feel tired, lonely, anxious, disconnected, and unwell, explaining in both humorous and poignant prose how the technology that was supposed to make our lives easier is actually one of the leading causes of chronic stress, dysregulated cortisol, and dangerously inadequate sleep. Equal parts commentary and practical guide, this book offers solutions that empower readers to manage their stress, improve their sleep, and implement scientifically supported methods to break the cycle of device addiction.

In this book, readers will

How cortisol—the Master Hormone and your body's overworked alarm system—can become dangerously imbalanced, ruin your health, and leave you feeling exhausted and overwhelmed. How Silicon Valley went for your attention instead of your well-being – and how that's warped the way we sleep, date, parent, and even think. Practical, empowering ways to unplug, reconnect, and start living like a human again – not a device-controlled zombie. Stress Nation is both your wake-up call and game plan that delivers on its promise of a clearer mind, healthier body, and better life.

Overall, Hai has extensive knowledge into cortisol and dispelling myths about what raised cortisol is responsible for and how it arises. This book did not necessarily provide groundbreaking new info, but did a lot to support and reinforce the importance of sleep, diet, and lifestyle in changing how our bodies respond to stress and the world around us. Particularly, this book was very helpful in illuminating menopause and just how much we don’t know or how little we know about its effect on the body.
It’s hard to take the research and the advice in earnest when the author is also a supplement company founder, but the reasoning and the advice does go beyond the supplements. I think the effectiveness of the strategies and helpful pushes was good, but for the length and how common sense parts of this felt, it was a 3.5 for me. The tone is conversational and helps to make things more clear, but the long form product placement was hard to look past.

3.5 stars.

Stress Nation explains why so many people feel tired, anxious, disconnected, and unwell, showing how technology meant to make life easier has become a leading cause of chronic stress, dysregulated cortisol, and inadequate sleep. Equal parts commentary and practical guide, it explores how cortisol can become dangerously imbalanced, how Silicon Valley has warped the way we sleep, date, parent, and think, and offers practical ways to unplug and reconnect. This book is both a wake-up call and a game plan for a clearer mind, healthier body, and better life.

To be honest, I expected a broader coverage on stress management beyond the too-much-tech and lack-of-sleep angle. That said, the content is still correct and useful to an extent, with generic but handy tips on reducing stress by limiting technology exposure and improving sleep quality.

A lot of the book focuses on reducing screen time, going offline, and unplugging - especially setting restrictions on kids’ screen time. Personally, I didn’t learn anything new from the advice, but I can see how it could be helpful for other readers.

Overall, this book works well as a general reminder to keep cortisol levels in check and to maintain healthy daily habits. The audiobook narration is also relatively easy to listen to, perfect for daily commutes.

Stress Nation is one of those books that feels instantly relevant the moment you open it. Justin Hai takes something we all experience every day — stress — and breaks it down in a way that’s clear, human, and surprisingly actionable. What I liked most is that he doesn’t just blame “modern life” for everything; he actually explains how certain systems, habits, and cultural expectations feed into a national stress cycle.

I found myself nodding a lot because the examples feel real — the constant notifications, the pressure to always be “on,” the way burnout sneaks up quietly. Hai offers practical strategies, but more importantly, he gives a way of thinking about stress that makes it feel less overwhelming and more manageable. It’s not preachy, not gimmicky — just thoughtful insights that make you look at your own habits with fresh eyes.

If you’re feeling stretched thin and want a grounded, smart perspective on why everyone seems exhausted these days, this book is absolutely worth a read.

Stress — we all experience it, know the harm it can cause, yet it remains one of the most persistent struggles of our lives. When I was approved for an audio eARC of this book and started listening to it, the initial discussion of how pervasive phones and technology have become in our lives hit a little too close to home as I was listening to this very audiobook on my phone. While I had heard some of the information before, particularly regarding the stress hormone cortisol, changes to our sleep cycle, and more, I really appreciated some of the connections Hai made with regard to how one affects the other, while also offering practical first steps to begin the important and necessary changes to improve our lives.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this eARC in exchange for my honest review. #StressNation #NetGalley

A bit generic on the importance of sleep and risk of stress but the chapters about cortisol were fascinating. Take away was the importance of putting screens away when it’s time to sleep as well as keeping myself from stressing out and flooding my system with cortisol/adrenaline too often everyday.

I went into this book expecting to gain fresh knowledge about stress and the role of technology, but unfortunately, much of the content felt recycled and didn’t offer many new insights.
