🔥🤠🔥 The new sheriff's about to discover the town's sweet vet tech has a naughty side hustle...
I'm a vet tech barely making rent with a I teach pole fitness three nights a week in a converted space above a pawn shop just outside city limits. Sheriff Gage brought his injured K9 partner Judge into the clinic, and now he's there every day for rehab, making me fumble instruments with that deep Texas drawl. Problem is, he discovered my late-night side hustle and decided to appoint himself my personal security detail. The bossy, overprotective cowboy sheriff is "patrolling" outside during my classes, fixing the broken locks, and growling at any man who looks my way. Every time he backs me against his patrol car in full uniform, I forget why we're supposed to keep things professional. And when he watches me work on Judge with that hungry look in his eyes? We're one "accidental" touch away from breaking every rule.
I've wanted Lacey since the moment I rushed Judge into that clinic. Now I know my sweet vet tech spends her nights spinning half-naked on a pole, and I can't think straight. She's teaching in the worst part of the county with no security, and yeah, I'm camping outside that sketchy building. Sue me. Every time she storms out in those tiny shorts to tell me off, I want to show her exactly why she needs my protection. She thinks I'm being professional during Judge's appointments, but when she bends over to examine him, when she mentions being "sore from last night's workout," when she demonstrates stretches? I'm done playing nice. This little wildcat is mine to protect. And after weeks of this torture, I'm done pretending I'm just worried about her safety.

He wants to protect her. She wants her space. They both want each other.
Lacey’s a vet tech with a secret: she teaches pole fitness in a sketchy studio above a pawn shop. Between double shifts and saving for school, she’s built something of her own through grit and determination. What she doesn’t need is Gage parked outside during class, fixing locks and acting like her personal bodyguard. But when he watches her with that look, when he leans in during quiet moments with his injured K9, Judge, it gets harder to hold the line.
Gage should walk away. She’s strong, independent, and not looking for anyone to take control. But someone’s watching her, and standing by isn’t in his nature. The more time he spends near her, the more he stops pretending this is just about duty. Every fight between them feels like a spark. Every glance feels like a promise.
When danger closes in, Lacey holds her ground. She sets the terms and Gage learns real protection means listening as much as acting. They don’t fall into love fast. They earn it through trust, heat, and showing up when it matters. In the end, it’s not about saving each other. It’s about finally being seen.
Lacey learns that letting someone in doesn’t mean giving up who she is. Gage learns that strength isn’t control, it’s choosing someone and standing beside them. Together, they go from guarded and tense to deeply intimate, grounded in mutual respect and a bond that won’t break.
A steamy, small town, protective sheriff romance with forced proximity, workplace tension, a secret side hustle, and one very loyal K9. A fiercely independent heroine and a quietly intense sheriff collide in a story packed with emotional heat and slow-burn grit. It’s about power, safety, healing, and choosing love that makes space for who you really are.
The Elevator Pitch: A tough-on-the-outside sheriff meets his match in a guarded vet tech with a secret after-hours life. When danger comes too close, their simmering tension erupts into a fiercely protective, deeply emotional connection. Packed with steam, grit, and intense feels, it delivers tension, heat, and heart.
"When I want something, I don't do it halfway." ~Lacey🥰
This may be a short story but it didn't read that way. Not at all. It was good. Now. Lacey did do things I didn't agree with, girllll, you don't have to prove a point with your own safety.😳 If being in a place that has red flags of danger, wouldn't that go against not needing protection from a man that you're so against having protect you by going there in the first place? I didn't understand that part.🤔🤷🏼♀️ Lacey had issues to work through with a past boyfriend and how controlling he had been.
Okay. I was wrapped up as the world building grew in this small Texas town. Was this Mistletoe Ridge? Maybe. This book was definitely romantic suspense. Some mystery. Action. With a creepy and unsettling stalker hiding in the shadows 😨😬 as Lacey Bennett teaches her night classes of pole fitness.👯♀️👯 During the day she works at an Animal Hospital as a veterinary assistant with dreams of being a certified vet tech. Lacey had a ton of stresses, plans, and struggles. But she loved animals, the ladies she taught to, and of course, she was crushing on the very attractive and tall sheriff Gage Coulter. I can see why.lol Gage has a partner K9 Judge who had been injured during a d&ug bust.🫢 I already love that there was a dog in this story. I wanted more with Judge. And not stuck in a vehicle for over 40 minutes later on. Was there a heat alarm pro? I'm going to believe that there was.😉🐕🦺🚨 It's a made up story, I know, but safety first. Especially with animals.😁😁
Lacey liked Gage. Gage also liked Lacey. But it never seemed to be the right time to speak up and ask to go beyond the Vet's clinic until.... one evening.👤 FYI There was spice later on.🤭🌶️🌶️🥵🌶️🌶️ I liked Gage. Hottt cowboy sheriff.🤠💋 Yes please. Patient. Respectful. Over-protective. He doesn't push Lacey. On the other hand, Lacey, I get she went through things, like Gage did, but imo she misconstrued his actions as "ways to put limits on her life." She lashed out, was suspicious. Lacey was bitter. I think he more than proved himself to her. I'm on the fence with this character's mindset especially at the end.😂😂 HEA. Yes. I still like the story. It was written well. The book cover is awesome. Shout out to Whiskers😸 and K9 Judge🐶. Happy reading. *•>§<•*💙💙💙💙
👩🏼🏫🐾👮Thank you to Ms Jones and Booksprout. The opinions shared here are my own.👮🐾👩🏼🏫
Lacey Bennett is a veterinary assistant who works at the North Texas Animal Hospital owned by Dr. Bev Montgomery-Lopez, D.V.M. To help pay her bills and tuition towards her associate's degree to become a licensed vet tech, she also teaches pole fitness classes at night. Dr. Bev has promised her a job when she gets her certification. But as usual, her expenses seem to be greater than her income.
Leroy, her father and the local mechanic, was happy to learn that she was going to teach exercise classes when he thought it would be aerobic exercises like what is being taught at the community center. When he found there were poles involved, he accused her of wanting to become a stripper. He wouldn't even believe her explanation that pole exercises are legitimate and not just for strippers. She's both hurt and disappointed at his reaction. He hasn't spoken to her since their argument eight months ago.
Gage Coulter, the local sheriff, has been taken with Lacey since what seem like forever. He's ex-Army military police. On what turned out to be his last mission, their routine patrol was ambushed. His best friend was shot and killed in the attack. Gage blamed himself for not being able to get to Cody in time to save him, although realistically he knows that no one could have saved him. He left the Army after that, returning home to be elected sheriff.
He looks forward to the vet appointments for his K9 partner, Judge. Judge does, too, as does Lacey. They may think their attraction to each other doesn't show, but everyone at the vet clinic has noticed.
Like most men who have been in her life, Gage has a tendency to slip into protection mode and take over her life. She's tired of men, beginning with her father, knowing what's best for her and stepping in to take over her life. When someone begins stalking her, he starts collecting everything needed to protect her at her studio. Unlike other men who had been in her life, he listened to her concerns. He's there to stay, if she'll have him. But it's not going to be easy for her to give up her hard-earned independence.
Can they learn to compromise, or will this be the end of their budding relationship?

Unleashed by Annee Jones is the kind of small-town romance that sneaks up on you—sweet, spicy, suspenseful, and packed with heart (plus one unforgettable K9 wingman 🐕🦺).
Lacey is doing everything she can to survive. By day, she’s a kind, dedicated vet tech barely scraping by. By night, she’s teaching pole fitness in a sketchy building on the wrong side of town, chasing a dream of getting back to school and building a better future. It’s a secret she keeps close—until Sheriff Gage brings in his injured K9 partner, Judge, and starts showing up at the clinic a little too often.
Gage is all Texas drawl, steady authority, and simmering restraint. He’s been crushing on Lacey from the start but can never find the right moment to cross that line. Then he discovers her late-night side hustle—and his concern flips straight into full protective alpha mode. Suddenly he’s “patrolling” outside her classes, fixing broken locks, glaring down any man who breathes wrong in her direction, and pretending it’s all just about safety… even when the chemistry between them is crackling off the page.
What makes Unleashed shine is the balance. Yes, Gage is deliciously bossy and overprotective, but Lacey is no pushover. She’s strong, independent, and fiercely protective of her autonomy. Their push-and-pull—between protection and control, fear and trust—feels real and emotionally grounded. When danger escalates and Lacey’s life is truly threatened, the stakes rise fast, and Gage proves he’s willing to do whatever it takes to keep her safe—while still learning how to stand with her, not over her.
Add in Judge, the absolute best K9 wingman, some laugh-out-loud moments, steamy tension, and a satisfying HEA, and you’ve got a romance that’s as fun as it is heartfelt.
If you love protective sheriffs, heroines with secret wild sides, small-town suspense, and stories where two people with baggage choose to build something better together, Unleashed is a must-read—and one you’ll happily recommend the moment you finish.

In her attempts to prove she can handle everything on her own, there’s a certain recklessness to Lacey when this story opens, particularly when it comes to her own safety. But never fear, because Sheriff Gage is very much on the case. One of the things I really loved was how Annee portrayed pole fitness as so much more than a strip-club gimmick. (Though let’s be honest, those dancers must have superhero-level core strength.) Unfortunately, the knee-jerk reaction from others, especially Lacey’s father, is exactly what you’d expect. Sure, I would have preferred Lacey to teach her classes in a safer location, but beggars can’t be choosers, and she’s barely scraping by. By day she’s a vet tech, by night a pole fitness instructor, and through it all she’s driven by a clear vision for her future. When Sheriff Gage brings in his K9 partner, Judge, after an injury, Lacey becomes Judge’s primary PT caregiver and watching her unravel a little every time Gage shows up is downright adorable. Lacey is convinced Gage must think she’s a total klutz, given how often she drops things when he accidentally brushes against her. Meanwhile, Gage is fighting his own internal battle just to stay professional. Lacey’s past relationship has left her understandably wary of controlling men, so she initially misreads Gage’s protective instincts. Yes, he’s overprotective, but given his job, he knows exactly how fast things can spiral out of control. And while Lacey is fiercely independent, she’s no fool. When it matters most, she recognizes Gage’s experience and accepts his help—thankfully so, when the danger turns out to be very real. What really won me over with Gage was his willingness to listen. Even when every instinct tells him to take charge, he makes room for Lacey’s needs, opinions, and boundaries. Their relationship works because they actually communicate. And Judge? He delivers all the warm, fuzzy feels and makes the perfect sidekick. With just the right mix of spice, swoon, and suspense, this is a fast, engaging read that keeps you turning the pages. I received an Advanced Reader Copy and am voluntarily reviewing it. Lacey is a veterinary assistant barely living pay check to pay check. She also has a passion for pole fitness and opened a studio to teach despite resistance from her father. If she could get more students, she will be able to pay to go to school to be a veterinary technician. Being a technician pays more money and allows her to participate more in the procedures. Lacey's love for animals supersedes all else.
Gage is the sheriff in this small town. He noticed Lacey and is building up the nerve to ask her out while rehabbing his trusty partner, Judge. When Gage finds out about Lacey's pole fitness classes, he likes her even more. She is strong and beautiful. Someone is lurking and the studio neighborhood and building is not safe. Will Lacey let Gage take the lead on her safety? Lacey has had issues with men deciding for her and refuses the let that happen again. Can Lacey distinguish Gage's protectiveness from control? They both have some work to do. Gage is determined to keep Lacey safe. He has to tread lightly. Navigating the rough waters while starting a new relationship has them both on edge. Can Gage keep Lacey safe? He is definitely going to try his best to make her feel comfortable enough to accept his help. Gage and Lacey are very sweet. You know Ms. Jones always throws a little heat readers' way. Another quick, impactful story full of meaning.
Lacey is a vet assistant working hard toward becoming a vet tech, juggling rent, student loans, and the general struggle of staying afloat. To help make ends meet, she also teaches pole fitness. Enter Gage, the town sheriff, whose Belgian Malinois K9 partner has been needing some extra vet visits. Sure, his deputies could handle it… but Gage insists on bringing the dog in himself. And yes, it’s very obvious there’s more going on there than just professional concern 😉.
This was a short read that seriously packed a punch. Sweet, swoony, a little steamy, and just suspense-y enough to keep things interesting. The characters were easy to love, their growth felt natural, and the story was well-paced and flowed really well. I had such a fun time reading this one!
This book is part of the Side Hustle multi-author series, which centers around characters with unique side gigs, and I’ve been enjoying the variety a lot. This one was definitely a standout for me!.

Sexy sheriff with the cutest wingman ever his K9. Sheriff Gage has been taking his K9 to the vet for an injury he received during a drug bust. He has been working up the nerve to asking the vet tech Lacey out. But it never seems to be the right time even if his wonderful partner does try to help him out every chance he gets. Lacey is barely making rent and wants to go back to school so she starts teaching Pole Fitness in a shady building in a shady part of town. Sheriff Gage finds out and things between them quickly change. But will he be able to convince her that he is only looking out for her safety and wants to work with her not against her? Absolutely loved this cute intense suspenseful with a little mystery romance. You get a protective alpha hero and a heroine with a secret wild side that is tamed by the Sheriff and his K9 wingman. Another great addition to the Side Hustle series.

This was short, sweet read. Lacey Bennett is a veterinarian assistant and she also teach pole fitness. She is trying to save money to become a veterinarian technician. The most important thing to Lacey is her independence. She has been burnt in a previous relationship, where her ex was controlling and took over. She is attracted to the Sheriff, but is terrified of losing herself once again. Gage Coulter is ex military and current sheriff. He has been taking his K9 to his vet checks and physical therapy just to spend time with Lacey. During a routine patrol he sees Lacey teaching her pole fitness class. He also notices she has a stalker. He wants to protect her but can she trust him to not take control of her life. This was a sweet read. The author does a good job of distinguishing the difference in care versus control. Gage is sweet and protective but supportive of Lacey. Lacey is strong, fierce, independent and has a hard time accepting any help at all.
Lacey works as a veterinary assistant since she didn't make enough to pay for college, rent, etc. So she started a pole fitness studio to start saving more to finish her veterinary tech degree. Her father believes that her pole fitness means stripper and hasn't spoke to her in 17 months. The sheriff, Gage Coulter, has been bringing in his K9, Judge, for physical therapy since being injured on the job. Gage wants to see if Lacey will go on a date. But,he hasn't asked her yet! What happens when he observes Lacey teaching her fitness classes and observes someone in the shadows also watching? Gage wants to protect her,but Lacey wants to control her side business! Why? How does he handle things to allow her to keep control? Will he be able to protect her? Follow their course where everyone gets what they want!.

Compromising for Love and Happiness - Lacey and Gage had been crushing on each other, but neither one of them had the courage to admit it to the other, but everything changed after the tension between them after a confrontation, led them to finally acknowledge their true feelings. However, Gage and Lacey still had a bit of trouble finding the balance between him helping her and her feelings like she was being controlled, but they soon agreed to compromise.
Unfortunately, Gage’s protective instincts heightened when Lacey’s life was threatened, but he took steps to keep her safe, which she begrudgingly agreed to. Luckily, Lacey let down her guard so she could have a chance at having a great life with Gage. This book was such a pleasure to read with characters who had baggage from their past, but they had such a powerful connection that made them find a way to make their relationship work. This is a definite must read book, that you will be happy to recommend.

Unleashed by Annee Jones is the first title I've read by this author and I wasn't disappointed. As a spicy small town protector romance it had me hooked from the start with it's engaging main characters, Gage and Lacey and Judge the K9 wingman. Gage, the alpha male cowboy sheriff has been pining for Lacey the vet tech since he had to rush Judge in for emergency treatment and once he discovers Lacey's side hustle of fitness classes in a shady part of town he can't help but do everything he can to protect her. Lacey is determined to remain strong and independent, wanting to prove she can do things on her own despite their mutual attraction. Circumstances align, communication helps and chemistry sizzles which all combine for an entertaining story.

Fun bit of romantic suspence with this quick little read. Judge is the perfect wingman for Gage to get close to Lacey. Learning her deeper secret was an accident, one he's glad he made. When he doesn't barge over the line like other men in her past Lacey realizes Gage may be different, and is willing to come out of her shell with him. This short novella deals with controlling and manipulative relationships (past tense) as well as stalking and mental health. It's done with sensitivity and addresses the effects of those issues as well. It's well written and nicely done all around. I'm a fan of Annee Jones' story telling style and this is a clear example of why.
I was gifted a copy of this book and voluntarily provided this review. Happy Reading Y'all 📚

Lacey, the head strong veterinary assistant working to save money for her Associate’s degree to be a licensed Vet Tech, but that doesn’t cover everything so she supplements what she can by teaching Pole Fitness a couple times a week. Gage, the town Sheriff and the owner of Judge the K9 that comes into the clinic for physical therapy. I loved every second of this one, it has just the right amount of spice, conflict, stalking, and of course a man who wants to protect the FMC, but will she be able to get out of her own way and let someone care for her that doesn’t want to control her, but to keep her safe while she does her job?.

After her last relationship Lacey is determined to be independent. She works with the town vet and then teaches pole dancing to help her save money to pay for college. Not only does she have regular appointments with Gage’s dog but he has found out about her other job and the danger it has placed her in.
Gage works in law enforcement and has been attracted to Lacey for a while. He ensures that he is the one to take his dog to Lacey for their appointments as a way of spending time with her. When he finds out about the danger she is in he is torn between trying to protect her being there for her without taking over.
A little suspense, great chemistry and a protective sheriff who has met his match in Lacey.
I absolutely enjoyed this book and I loved the characters. We have sexy Gage and his trusty K9 partner, Judge, and we have Lacey who is a vet tech and is helping Judge with his therapy. The sparks between Gage and Lacey are instant and although Lacey is a strong woman who is determined to do things on her own after a very possessive relationship, Gage is waiting in the shadows to help Lacey when she needs it the most. There is some danger mixed with intrigue and all in all this is a very good read by Annee Jones.

Entertaining, suspenseful and sexy read about Lacey who is supporting her college tuition by teaching pole fitness classes. Starting out her side business, building conditions are not ideal and threat of danger becomes real. Meanwhile, she is caring for Judge, Sheriff Gage’s K9 and their smoldering attraction takes flight. I love a strong FMC and an equally strong MMC who takes pride and supports their woman. Side hustles for the win 🥰.

This is part of a collaboration of multiple authors who have come together to create a series of shorts. This is Jones' contribution and I found it to be a well written, small town, insta love / lust romance. Short with sweet and heat. I loved the premise of a small-town vet who teaches pole dancing on the side and a small-town sheriff who can't help but protect her. Love the protective nature of Gabe and the wild side of Lacey.

What a great read. This is one of my favorite so far in this series. Lacey is trying to be as independent as possible. Leaving a controlling ex. Working as a veterinary assistant and as a side job teaching pole fitness. The Sheriff has been making a lot of frequent appearances at the vets office with his K9. Any excuse to see Lacey. When a stalker gets too close to Lacey, Gage goes into protector mode. Loved it.

Side Hustle story of Lacey and Gage. Ok that was a scary part that had me wanting to hide under my covers, talk about creepy and wild but to have a hunky sheriff to save the day be still my swooning heart. What a wonderful story the emotional ending had me wanting to laugh and cry. Cant get enough and need more.

I loved how protective Gage was of Lacey. He met her at the vet and when he stumbles upon her night job, he knows he has to protect her and show her how much he cares about her. Lacey has had a bad history with men and needs someone who is willing to be a partner with her and not just control her life. I loved how Gage was with making sure she was cared for but also letting her decide what that looked like. Great read!
I really enjoyed this book. The stalker and suspense and mystery really kept me intrigued. I loved Gage he worked so hard to prove himself to Lacey. Lacey however, she drove me crazy, she was constantly misconstruing Gage and his intentions. She made it very hard to like her or understand why she kept pushing Gage, even with her past she made it so hard for him. This was a really good read.
