Young hotshot Skylar Coburn should already be in the NHL. At least, if you ask him. His shoulder injury from the previous season delayed his timeline, but he’s ready to show his coaches that they’re wasting his talents down in the AHL. For now, he’s twiddling his thumbs, counting down the seconds until Iowa is in his rear-view.
Adam Lark’s bar is failing. Heathens was his inheritance from his late brother, and he’s spent years keeping it alive not just for his brother but for his niece. Every day of his life for the last ten years has been the same, until a loud blond hockey player walks in the door with a big opinion of himself and a lot of energy to burn.
Skylar isn’t falling in love in Iowa—he’ll save that for when he’s up in the big league in the Twin Cities—but a little flirting with the owner of the bar down the street from his apartment passes the time. Adam has a thick shell, and Skylar loves a challenge.
They both try to keep their distance, but just as they start to get attached, Skylar finally gets sent up to the big league. This is going to be a mess.
I'd kinda forgotten how OTT and bratty Skylar could be 😂😂
Honestly I found this to be so wholesome and sweet, which is totally not what I expected from Skylar after his insistence on never getting attached to anyone in Iowa!!
Adam balanced Sky so well. He was more emotionally stable and held strong that he didn't want to start something if it wasn't going to be serious. I loved how he took care of Sky, and it's made me really want a Shirley Temple 😂
I would have liked to see a bit more of Brandon from book one, considering he's one of Skylar's best friends, but it was also nice to see Sky growing up and making other friends, like Walker and Grace.
Jackson and Ryan are just so funny as the surrogate parents to the call-ups and I hope we get to see more of them in future books too.
I'm kinda hoping Beck and Chase get a book, but as neither are NHL prospects I don't know if it fits in this series? I would love to read it though!

I received an ARC of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review
4.5/5. This book was so fun! I was really excited to get to know Skylar more after the first book and he did not disappoint. I love how Skylar feels so much. Yes, that can get a bit ugly, but it's also endearing. And I love how he works on it. I also love Adam. He's closed off and takes a minute to warm up, but once he does he's so caring and loving. I love how Skylar won't give up on Adam, even though Adam doesn't fully believe him/won't let him in. Skylar eventually leaving is a very real problem and I enjoy how they face it. I also love the bar's story and the regulars. I cried a few times throughout the book because I felt for everyone so much. However, like a typical Hannah Henry book, it was fairly lighthearted and very swoony regardless of the tears. I would definitely recommend this cutie.
Notes: 2/5 spice levels, small age gap, hockey player/bar owner, rock climbing, long distance
This was cute, but I found myself speedreading thorugh some parts just because I couldn't really get myself to fully get engaged with the story. At some points I was reading to finish the book, not because I necesarily cared about Skylar and Adam's story which is a bummer because I usually love Hannah's books!
There were a lot of things I liked about this, the main thing being Skylar! I adored Skylar since book 1 and I was happy to get inside his head and see how he was handling the AHL/NHL when we'd only ever seen his anger before. I thought he was going to be a little more bratty, and I wish there had been more about his friendship with Beck (tbh i also thought they were going to be a couple so maybe that's also why i couldn't fully commit to Adam). Overall though, I found him trying to get out of his own head to be interesting to watch. How easily he let his frustration show, and how he needed to curb that to be a real NHL contender.
I thought Adam was nice, but I feel like we meet him at a point where he's so lost on what he wants to do with his life, that I didn't fee like I knew him. He put his life on hold for his niece and was willing to move wherever for Skylar, but I didn't feel like I had a good sense of his passions.
Curious for the next book! Beck and his coach?? Walker and a mystery man???
this was cute! hannah’s good at writing low-angst books with good plot and a lot of heart <3
i loved getting more of skylar & seeing his personality! he grew a lot from the start of the book, and it was really nice to see him mature and work on himself. him & adam made the perfect pair; they were the balance the other needed
it’s also always fun seeing familiar faces!! all of hannah’s characters are so great & i love catching up with them!
"Skylar isn’t falling in love in Iowa—he’ll save that for when he’s up in the big league in the Twin Cities—but a little flirting with the owner of the bar down the street from his apartment passes the time. Adam has a thick shell, and Skylar loves a challenge."
I LOOOOOOOVED THIS! Young hotshot hockey player and a struggling bar owner. Adam was so resistant and the will-they won't-they worked so well here. I love Hannah Henry's writing, it's just so perfectly balanced and swoony. The drama when Skylar does finally get called up was so good and the ending was so satisfying. Loved it, will definitely put this on my re-read shelf.
Adam: What do you play? College hockey? Skylar: AHL. Pro. Adam: Oh, you're a pro, then.
Yeah, he literally just said that? That exchange would've worked better if Skylar hadn't said "Pro" himself so that we'd see Adam knew what the AHL was and also be teasing instead of making it look like Adam just echoed Skylar.
The book commits the cardinal sin of "I'm going to treat you differently than what I was characterized as because you're attractive" thing here when Skylar didn't immediately act negative towards Adam after he'd literally made fun Skylar's bad night. What happened to "everyone knew to steer clear of Skylar when he was in a mood"? Skylar literally had a bad game, was mad that someone else got called up instead of him, AND Adam just reminded him of his bad game (aka making fun of his lack of skills)? Was a passing attraction to a stranger really enough for him to not get annoyed when someone poked him in his biggest insecurity (aka his hockey skills) when he was already in a bad mood?
Adam walking Skylar home was more acceptable in my eyes since that's a reasonable thing to want to do for just attraction. Not getting mad when you're openly teased about something you really care about just because the guy teasing you is attractive is less justifiable.
Skylar and Adam doing the whole "not dating but actually just dating" thing was cute but I don't think the story did a good enough job establishing Skylar as the type of person to continually pursue someone who's sending confusing messages (aka Adam). I legit got tired of Adam's shit when he pushed Skylar away after rock climbing and was baffled when Skylar took the rejection then proceeded to ask about when they'd see each other next. Why exactly was he trying so hard to get with Adam when all he wanted was a no strings attached fuck? The answer is implied to be because he's so attracted to him, but there are literally an infinite number of easier men out there, I again needed a reason besides attraction that justified why Skylar was willing to put up with Adam's cagey-ness.
I don't get why Beck decided to come with Skylar to the bar that night when he already had plans? Very weird to agree to go somewhere knowing you'd have to leave AND also be kind of a dick to your friend's friend.
Skylar finally giving a reason for why he so attracted to Adam besides "he's hot" was fine, but also felt like a super big lie. The night after he played his first NFL game, he talks to Ryan and explains why he's hung up on Adam. He says it's because Adam was basically a reliable + stable guy and that Adam "wasn't impressed by him" which sounds fine, but in reality, the book never showed that as a thing. I cannot recall a situation where Skylar thought that Adam being unimpressed was the thing that kept him interested nor did I remember any scenes highlighting a desire for stability or admiration for Adam's stability in the community. Those are solid reasons to base a romance on, so the author should've just actually written them out instead of just having Skylar tell us that was those were the reasons he was so down bad for Adam. That's also ignoring the fact that Skylar specifically said he didn't want anything long term which is just magically reversed in this conversation since he suddenly mentions their non-existent "future" together. I get the direction, but the execution was not done right since Skylar says one thing (likes Adam for his stability) but it's never actually been shown then it's suddenly worth lamenting about because "the thing that makes me so hot for him means we don't have a future if I stay up". It made even less sense when I re-read their time together where Adam helped calm down Skylar from his bad game by cooking for him because Adam specifically mentions that the bar was failing so Skylar describing him as "rooted and steady" was literally nonsensical.
God, why would you name a side character "Alan" when one of the MCs is named "Adam". There are countless other names that exist, there was no need to pick one that just had a one letter difference.
I gave up when Skylar said "You're not a just for me. Adam, you're important to me."
Why exactly was Adam important to him already? Yes, they hung out a number of times and established a friendship (that Adam was sending mixed messages on) but "important"? Not really the right word here considering there wasn't anything truly meaningful between them other than the attraction. If Skylar had said "I want to see where this goes" or "I feel like you have the potential to be the love of my life" or something along those lines (aka "Adam could grow to be important to him) then it would make sense. As it was, the strength of his emotions did not match the time they'd spent together.
TL;DR: Ok start by a very disjointed middle. THE author wrote Skylar and Adam to have a "playing hard to get/only want to be casual" thing going on then suddenly swaps it to "I want to try be with you even if we're long distance" without writing the proper emotional transition from the "casual" thing. Story needed a very explicit and significant moment when both Skylar and Adam acknowledged that they now wanted to try to get with each other. The characterization suffered as well because the sudden change in desires wasn't properly developed meaning the characters felt like they just changed without any reason (plus Skylar in general was written kind of wishy washy about whether or not he was actually insufferable/gregarious). 1.5 stars rounded up.
What a treat to receive this ARC in my inbox the day after I preordered the book! Sometimes the universe just sends you a sign that you're doing things right.
Hannah Henry is one of my favorite authors, and it was wonderful to return to her world (including getting to see some beloved familiar faces).
This is romance for hockey lovers. The hockey here isn't set dressing. Henry obviously knows what she's talking about, and if you're someone who loves the sport, including the especially fraught world of the minor leagues, this series in particular will appeal to you. Getting to follow the journey of an AHL player as they strive and fail and then succeed to make it to The Show is one of my favorite parts of following the sport so any time I have the chance to get to step into those skates I take it.
Skylar and Adam (hi again, Adam!) aren't the average hockey romance pair. Skylar is a slightly too big for his breezers D-man in the AHL and thinks his shot at the NHL is more than earned, and Adam is a crabby, reluctant bar owner who inherited his job as well as someone else's life when his brother passed away, leaving him with a declining business in a run down building. This doesn't stop them from having one of the sweeter romances I've read recently. Skylar chases Adam down persistently and in the most adorably annoying way. The frequent comparisons to a puppy felt not only apt but charming, as Skylar is in fact very cute, but also VERY annoying and slightly messy. Adam, archetypal black cat, tries his best to resist but Skylar eventually manages to win him over.
These two characters are so deeply kind and gentle with each other. Even while Adam is resistant of Skylar's advances, he still treats him with respect and care. They both go through their own journeys of emotional growth during the short period the book takes place in, and it's rewarding to see them both identify their own flaws and work hard on themselves without thinking finding love is some kind of cure-all. Their relationship felt much more grounded in reality than many in the genre, and I would believe an epilogue set 10 years in the future where they're happily still together.
This is a slow burn, but honestly, I felt like it could have been even slower. The romance itself did not at all feel rushed, but the second half of the book felt just a bit aimless. There wasn't as much conflict as there was healing, which was lovely, don't get me wrong, but the book kind of wandered gradually to the end without an enormous amount of tension, and therefore not a huge sense of resolution.
If you're looking for a SO SWEET, lightly funny romance with fun hockey and a relaxing, gentle HEA with medium, super romantic spice, this is a winner, and I'd say could probably be read as a stand alone. But you really should read everything by Hannah Henry, starting with the Delay of Game series, so you too can be excited to see old friends return and get to spend as much time as possible with them.
I would like to thank GRR for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.
Ahhhhhhh I loved this soooo much!! Buzzed on You was the perfect blend of actual hockey that made me shout and cheer, and a feel good romance that warmed me up from head to toe with super melty love vibes! Skylar and Adam's romance could not have been more precious, and once again Hannah Henry charmed all the stars out of me with her endearing MCs who showed up with their whole hearts from page 1 right through to the very end.
I still can't get over their relationship journey tbh. I'm so in love with the breadth of both their emotional arcs that I'm already excited to reread this again because of how fresh the beginning would be Right now In this moment If I picked it up after posting this.
Skylar kicked things off as a kind of wild, high-energy, quick-tempered AHL defenseman, with zero emo-regulation and his sights set on getting called up to the NHL. He wasn't interested in making any connections in Iowa that would hold him back when he inevitably made it to the big leagues. He was hot-headed but highly motivated, and from start to finish I ADORED HIM COMPLETELY! He was like a puppy with big emotions he was still learning how to wrangle, and I was weak for this sweet dude on the spot.
And Adam was simply the most amazing, steadfast rock of a man, partner, ally, friend, uncle, son…you name it, he showed up for EVERYONE, and I admired him so much! He was strong, determined, patient and kind, and how he held Skylar's advances at bay while soaking up the warmth of his attention, and letting both their feelings cook without bursting into flames, was honestly mastery.
Together they were both so soft, lovable, and sweet, and I loved their cozy chemistry. Skylar suffused Adam with lots of snuggly, heartfelt attention, which he hadn't had in a very long time. And Adam gave Skylar a much needed anchor to come back to when he lost his cool on the ice.
They were perfect for each other, and also amazing humans to everyone who mattered to them! I was so emotionally invested in Skylar and Adam as people, that when either of them cried, I cried too. There were some deeply moving moments that took us all out, and when I tell you I was full on sobbing during their HEA I'm not joking! I can't remember the last time it was Niagara Falls all over my face, but I'm just so grateful that this story affected me so deeply.
Buzzed on You was an entirely marvellous second installment in The Call-Ups series, and I loved every sentence of it! Special shout-out to the team names that I thought were all deada$$ hilarious, but especially The Winnipeg Wheat which had me howling. Because I'm from Ontario and that's funny to me.
Anyway I'm very excited for more Call-Ups finding love and NHL success because this series has been gorgeous fun so far and I cannot get enough of it!
4.5 stars This was a very lovely read. I'm really enjoying this new series by Hannah Henry. We met Skylar in the first book, he was Brandon's teammate/friend/roommate, he's loud and spontaneous and he doesn't like to be all by himself at all. When Brandon is called up to the NHL, Skylar is forced to find a new apartment, where he's going to live alone, since his best friend and captain, Beck, likes his own space (and we get some hints about why he needs that...). Near to Skylar's new apartment there's Heatens, a cute little bar, managed by Adam, a closed off kind of guy, who makes Skylar works so hard
I really loved the slow burn of this story: Skylar and Adam are drawn to each other and they have a good banter, but both of them have their own issues to solve before diving into a new relationship. Skylar has to work on his temper on the ice and on the expectations, unsatisfied so far, of being called up to the NHL; Adam needs to come to terms that he and his niece could be forced to close the bar and he has also deal with the isolation he put himself into, since he avoided to give any man a chance for over a decade.
Adam and Skylar have that kind of love that is true support in everything the other will decide to do: Adam doesn't want for Skylar to renounce his dreams, while Sky would do anything to make Adam happy. They were incredibly sweet together and I really really appreciated that the author gave more attention to their feelings and their emotional connection than to the spicy scenes. There were a few bittersweet moments in this book, regarding Adam's grief for losing his brother and also the place that has been his sole focus for so many years and Skylar's unwillingness to form meaningful connections in a place that he always considered temporary, that almost costed him his friendship with Beck.
And about Beck, I was very much intrigued by him: he's a player at the end of his career and his issues and priorities are quite different from Skylar's. It seems that something is brewing between him and a certain man and I beg the author to give this man his HEA.
The epilogue is sweet and perfect. I literally can't wait for the next book!
I received an ARC of this book from the author and this is my honest review.
I'll be honest - I didn't love Skylar in the first book. But oh my gosh do I love him now! Seeing him be himself, being in his head, truly helped me understand him and see why he always has been the way he is.
Skylar hates being alone but he's also committed to not making connection in Iowa because he knows he'll be called up soon to the NHL. So when he feels lonely he makes his way to a local bar and meets the owner/bartender. Cue more bar visits, flirting without knowing if it'll go anywhere, and finding company within the small bar.
Adam lost his brother a decade ago and took ownership of his bar, so he could eventually pass it down to his niece when she was old enough. He uprooted his life to keep it alive, so he hadn't really made Iowa his home. But he's still here, working at the bar, trying to keep it afloat, and living upstairs in the attached apartment. He's not looking for anyone - hasn't in a long time.
But Skylar keeps popping by and Adam can only resist his charm so much.
I love how they complement each other so beautifully. They are so different, but they are what the other needs. Skylar gets humbled when someone doesn't care about his hockey career (or hockey at all), and Adam has someone who continues to push past his slightly-grumpy exterior.
A bit of opposites attract, an age gap, and chasing goals, this book was such a cute read! I devoured it (as I do all of Hannah Henry's books) and cannot wait for the future of this series (and am guessing who might be next!)
Buzzed on You by Hannah Henry is the second book in The Call-Ups series. I loved the first book, and I loved this one as well.
In Buzzed on You, eternally happy AHL player Skylar decides to go to the bar near his apartment where he meets the quiet and broody bar owner, Adam. Skylar is immediately drawn to Adam and makes it his mission to break through his walls.
Adam took over the bar, Heathens, when his brother passed away and will the bar to his daughter who was still a child at the time. He has been keeping the bar alive for his niece for 10 years.
Skylar has had a singular goal, to make it to the NHL. However, he has been in the AHL for a bit and worries he will never get called up. Even with his confidence, he still worries. That leads him to have some anger management issues that he takes out on his hockey stick by breaking it.
Adam and Skylar slowly learn about each other but Adam is hesitant to go further with Skylar. So is Skylar. But in the quiet moments in Adam's bar and their conversations over the phone when Skylar is on the road they fall in a quiet love.
Skylar is this great dichotomy of happiness and quick to anger. His feelings are big and close to the surface. Both Skylar and Adam are absolute sweethearts that want and crave love but are wary of giving their hearts away. They’re perfect for each other.
Skylar should already be in the NHL, he’s sure of that. He’s been in the AHL for long enough and now that his shoulder is healed he’s sure he won’t be there much longer. So sure that he doesn’t want to put down any ties in Iowa when he’ll be leaving it for Minnesota any day now.
Adam owns a failing bar in the same neighborhood Skylar lives in in Iowa. He knows very little about hockey and doesn’t know who Skylar is when Skylar starts flirting with him, but he does know Skylar is too young for him. He also isn’t ready to open his heart after his last relationship failed, and he still has a hole in his heart from losing his brother ten years ago.
Skylar may not want to put down roots in Iowa, but he isn’t going to let that stop him from flirting with the hot bar owner. No matter how stubborn Adam is being.
I love all of Hannah Henry’s books and this book is a perfect example of why. The hockey is accurate, the characters are fun, there’s humor and there’s just enough plot that it moves the story along without overshadowing the romance.
I loved loved loved all the flirting and pining and that this was more of a slower burn but that it still remained pretty low angst.
Tropes: 🏒 hockey player/bar tender 🏒 huddling for warmth 🏒 age gap 🏒 long distance (briefly)
The second book of the Call-Ups series brings us Brandon’s ex roommate and Becks annoying, bratty best friend- Hot- headed Skylar Coburn 25 who was called up temporarily for the NFL team The Northern Lights when one of their D- Men was injured..
Now he is back in Iowa- Defensman for the Iowa Stars and meets the gorgeous aloof co-owner of a failing bar called Heathens down the block from his lonely apartment- Adam Lark 35…
“this was going to be the season he finally made it to the NHL.”
“Falling in love with an Iowan is not on the bingo card.”
Skylar’s persistence to get Adam to give him his phone number and attention was cute, sweet and funny!
Adam was Skylar’s anchor when his anxiety and temper took over- kindhearted, sweet, patient, loyal and funny…
I loved Skylar’s character growth that was a result from Adam’s quiet, steady support and influence and new friends he made…
I enjoyed Jackson and Ryan’s cameo appearances as warm, supporting hosts to the AHL visiting replacements and NHL prospects, with their sweet dog- Lola!
A slow sweet, heartfelt burn with lots of smouldering energy where a beautiful friendship develops into an everlasting love that neither wanted or expected!
What’s brewing between Skyler’s best friend Beck and Chase?…🤔
I voluntarily received an ARC from the author and GRR for an honest non biased review.
Skylar is ready for the NHL and feels like his talents are being wasted in the AHL but was set back because of an injury. But now he's ready but has to wait until it's his time to be called up. So while he's waiting flirting with the hot bar owner seems like the perfect way to go except Adam is a tough nut to crack. Too bad Skylar likes a challenge is isn't looking to fall in love especially as he has his sights on moving and playing hockey in the big leagues. But that doesn't stop him from the incredible chemistry he and Adam have and the way he's ready to chase him despite it all. That is until he starts to finally get him only to finally be called up.
Adam isn't having the best time. The bar that was left to him by his late brother is failing and he doesn't know what to do. He's determined to do what it takes to keep it not only for himself and his brother's memory but also for his niece. And then a loud good looking hockey player comes in with his flirting and opinions and suddenly his heart is also in trouble only for things to shake up even more when said good looking hockey pkayer infiltrating his walls gets called up. Can they make it work? You'll have to read to find out. I really loved this book and was actually okay with the slow burn and I loved the fact that Skylar did some chasing. A good time was had by all.
Adam is the older bar owner under so much pressure to uphold his late brother’s legacy despite feeling buried under it and old beyond his years. Skylar is the young, arrogant hotshot hockey player determined to make it to the NHL beyond the odd call up when needed to fill in.
It was funny how Skylar was so determined to NOT be locked down by a relationship before he had his chance to make it to the big show, but ends up so determined he chases Adam at every opportunity! Skylar finally gets the call up and he is genuinely upset to leave Adam several hours away when he has finally convinced Adam that he wants something real with him. Despite difficulties living hours apart and on very different sleep/work schedules they both work hard to make time for each other amidst very busy lives. I like how Henry plays the long distance part of their relationship as I don’t believe I have seen it often.
Both Skylar and Adam go on their own journeys for character growth which happily brings them closer together and not further apart. I also love how they went on their journeys without having to compromise themselves or their dreams in order to finally have their HEA. A highly enjoyable, and dare I say sweet read. Adam and Skylar are a truly lovely couple.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
As with every book that Hannah Henry writes, I couldn’t put this one down once I started. Skylar is struggling because he feels he should have been called up to the NHL by now. Adam is a loner who has put his life on hold to honor a promise to his brother. Both are drifting a bit because where they are now isn’t the life either of them saw for themselves.
Skylar is one of those people that grows on you - yes, he can be annoying, but he has a heart of gold and is fiercely loyal and protective of those he cares about and he has decided that Adam is going to be one of his people. Adam takes a chance on Skylar and Skylar doesn’t waste it. He shows Adam that even though there is an age gap, and even though Skylar may not be in Iowa forever, they can still be good together for the time they are together.
I also loved watching Skylar open up to a few of his teammates and actually making friends instead of seeing everyone as a threat to his career. There were some parts of their story that made me tear up a little, but the way that Skylar and Adam’s love for each other unfolds is written so well.
Thank you to the author for the ARC, and I can’t wait for more in this series!
This book is such a fun and emotional ride, blending opposites-attract energy with a touch of real-life pressure that makes the romance feel grounded. Skylar is the perfect cocky, ambitious hockey player—full of confidence and just enough arrogance to make him entertaining without being unlikeable. Beneath it all, though, you can feel his drive and frustration, which adds depth to his character. Adam is a beautiful contrast. He’s steady, guarded, and weighed down by responsibility, making his connection with Skylar feel both unexpected and completely right. The dynamic between them is where this story truly shines—playful banter mixed with slow-building vulnerability that sneaks up on you. What I loved most was how the stakes felt real. Skylar’s career pulling him away just as things start to mean something adds that perfect layer of tension and inevitable heartbreak. You can see the mess coming, and yet you can’t look away. The romance balances heat and heart effortlessly, with plenty of chemistry and emotional depth. Overall, it’s a compelling, character-driven story about timing, risk, and whether love is worth chasing—even when everything else is on the line.
“Now that he knew Adam was his, it wasn’t a lightning bolt of attraction. His love was the sweeping warm light from a lighthouse on a cold, dark evening.”
AHL player Skylar is ready, he knows it’s his turn at the “Big Show…” AKA getting his shot at the NHL. Adam and Skylar are both in a holding pattern. Skylar isn’t bothering to make friends or have a relationship because soon he’ll be in the NHL, Adam because he’s been running his deceased brothers bar as a place holder for when his niece is ready to take it over.
When Sklyar stumbles upon Heathens, it becomes more than just a bar, but a play where he makes friends with regulars and meets Adam. Adam is wary of Skylar's pursuit, understandably. Skylar makes no secret of his ambitions or his attraction of Adam. His wooing was actually very sweet and patient.
Both men do a lot of character growth through the book. Skylar steadies his emotions so he can be a responsible partner, friend and teammate and Adam finally comes to the conclusion that it’s time to let his brother’s bar dreams go.
This was just wonderful. I enjoyed it so much and I hope you do too! If you like sweet, cozy, low angst, slow burn romance with annoyance to friends to lovers vibes then this is for you.
*To make it even better we see a lot of Jackson, Ryan and Lola (Drive the Net.)
This was honestly so wholesome and sweet—and not at all what I expected from Skylar after book one.
I loved getting to know Sky better here. He feels everything so deeply, and while that can get messy, it’s also what makes him so endearing. Watching him grow and actually work on himself was really nice to see.
Adam balanced him perfectly. He’s more grounded and emotionally steady, and I loved that he stood firm on wanting something real. The way he took care of Sky was so soft… and yes, now I also want a Shirley Temple.
Their dynamic just worked. They challenged each other in the right ways, and even when things got tough, it felt real and honest.
I also loved the side characters. Walker and Grace were great additions, and Jackson and Ryan as the surrogate “parents” were hilarious. I do wish we got a bit more of Brandon, but it was nice seeing Sky build new connections too.
This one had a few emotional moments that got me, but overall it’s still that classic Hannah Henry vibe...low angst, swoony, and full of heart.
Such a cute, feel-good read. Definitely recommend if you’re in the mood for something soft, funny, and a little bit emotional.
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.
I enjoyed how Skylar and Adam both supported each other, and were open enough to accept support in return. It felt like most of the characters demonstrated emotional intelligence and were the kind of people you’d like to be in a community with. I appreciated that the book made the point that things don’t need to work out in some idealized way or the way you originally had in mind to be considered a success or a positive outcome.
There was something that seems like a small thing- but even after finishing the book I can’t get past it. Skylar shares that his parents call him “Bug” a holdover from childhood, when they thought he bugged them a lot. I know that the actual interactions that are written between them show the parents as supportive and that Skylar isn’t feeling or recognizing any resentment or negative feelings; but I cannot imagine it is healthy for a child to be referred to in such a way or to constantly be reminded that they bug people. This is the kind of thing that makes people stop speaking up, stop coming by, stop participating.
This was such an enjoyable read with a great balance of humour, emotion, and chemistry. Skylar absolutely bursts off the page with his larger-than-life personality, confident, a bit reckless, and not always easy to like, but undeniably compelling. There’s something quite refreshing about how openly he feels everything, even when it gets messy. Adam, on the other hand, is much more guarded, and I really liked how his story unfolded more gradually. His attachment to the bar and the life he’s built around it added a lovely layer of depth, and it made his reluctance to let anyone in feel very real rather than frustrating.
What stood out most to me was the push and pull between them. Their connection builds in a way that feels natural, even when they’re trying to keep things casual. The looming inevitability of Skylar’s career taking him elsewhere adds a bittersweet edge that keeps things grounded. A charming, character-driven romance with just enough angst to keep it interesting without losing its warmth. I received a free arc copy and this is my honest review
Hannah is the master of lower angst, sweet-cozy reads that still have substance. In book 1, Skyler gives a chaotic 'I'm the best' energy with a chip on his shoulder while still bringing lightness and friendship to the page. Getting to see his pov and journey was great. A layered character and a sweet bbgirl is our Skyler.
Adam... oh what can I say about Adam. I love him. A reluctant, but determined bar owner who thinks he's destined to be alone and content -- not happy, just content. Adam inherited the bar after his brother's unexpected passing and 10 years on he's still coming to terms with this new reality. When Skyler's intense friendly energy and handsome face come into his bar.... makes him feel seen and interesting?? How can you resist?! (I mean, Adam does try... it just doesn't work for long.)
A gentle, lovely cozy hug of a read with a beautiful treatment on grief and changing dreams. Loved it.
Thank you, Hannah, for my copy of Buzzed on You, book 2 in the Call-Ups series. Buzzed on You, can be read as a standalone, though does contain Cameos from the previous book Drawn to You & the Delay of Game series.
Buzzed on You focuses on Skylar AHL hockey player & NHL prospect & Bar Owner Adam. Neither of them want a relationship or to put down roots in Iowa. Skylar may be cocky & hotheaded, but deep down, he is lonely & insecure. Adam paused his life a decade ago out of duty, but now what does he want. Adam & Sky balanced each other, and I was rooting for their HEA. Buzzed on You was low angst but definitely had some heart hurting moments.

I hope we get to find out the mystery connection between Beck & Chase.
Low drama romance between AHL hockey player Skylar, and bar owner, Adam. This is #2 in the Call-Up series, but works fine as a stand alone.
Skylar plays for an AHL team in Des Moines, Iowa. He meets Adam when he goes to Adam's bar one evening. Skylar has to work hard to get Adam to admit there's an attraction there (Adam is around 10 years older). Once Adam gives in, it's all about figuring out how to be together when Sky gets called up to the NHL team in Minneapolis.
I enjoyed this a lot - the plot moves along quickly. It's not super spicy, but there's just enough. Some of the characters from the first book show up here, but it's not necessary for you to have read that to make sense of this. The 2 main characters fit together well, and seem believable.
Flirty, fun, and so cute. The book is fast-paced so easy to read. Skylar and Adam are too freaking adorable. The way Skyler relentlessly chased after Adam was so good. I loved their dynamic Sky big-time golden retriever energy while Adam was more on the grumpy outer shell with a gooey center side. I enjoyed their slow-burn build-up from strangers to friends and finally lovers. I couldn't get enough of their flirty back and forth and their dynamic. Such a lighthearted sweet read.

Thank you, GRR and Hannah Henry, for the opportunity to read this book.
This is a spin off from the Delay of Game series, now that series I adored, I wrote rave reviews and think I scored each one 5 stars (but some of the books deserved more!) anyway, I was excited about this book and maybe I expected too much because sadly it missed the mark for me. I just didn’t feel the connection between Skylar and Adam. I wanted to, I liked them both, I just didn’t feel it, not like I did with Jackson and Ryan or Nate and Collin. The story seemed to drag, it seemed to have unnecessary parts, I loved catching up with Jack and Ryan, but I just didn’t love this book like I wanted to. Sorry 😔
This book reads like an old fashioned heart warming feel good romance. I was left smiling and full heart. I loved both men, Skylar, the extrovert loud soon to be NHL player who thinks highly of himself and the sweet Adam, the bartender caretaker. Adam's hesitancy to connect (as he thinks he and his life are too mundane, he is too old, and quite simply not in the same league as Skylar ring true). Both men were wonderfully written, and were a perfect pair for one another even thought it took them a bit to realize that. And I also am a sucker for long distance relationship stories as they reflect the world so many are living and experiencing.
Skylar was flirty, fun and had golden retriever energy. He's ready for the big-time NHL,, but are they ready to bring him up? Adam hasn't really had his own life. Taking over his brother's bar until his niece is of age, he has languished barely above water for 10 years. The last thing he wants is this guy who just keeps coming back. Skylar wears Adam down, but is he ready to make it work? I loved Skylar and his perseverance on the ice and trying to get Adam's heart. I thought the characters were realistic and engaging. I loved how neither wanted anything long-term but both caught feelings. Such a fun read- I love Hannah Henry's stories!
Thank you for the book; here is my honest opinion: 3.5⭐️This was cute, I appreciate a low angst romance. I like both Skylar and Adam as characters, they are easy to root for, for sure. This was nice, but as a couple, I didn’t really get a lot of chemistry between Adam and Skylar, nothing to really make them stand out, for me. I did enjoy Adam’s niece, Grace - an excellent female character- which I appreciate. The hockey is also excellent, and feels authentic. I also really enjoyed the cast of characters, old and new- they added lots of personality to the story.
To be honest, I was rather reluctant about reading this book, since I didn't like the first book in this series very much, and feared this would be the same. I was so wrong. This was a great book, with two perfect together mc, who both matures throughout the book. Adam is the sweetheart who has lived most of his adult life for his brother and niece, totally forgetting himself, and Skylar is the puppy who crave other peoples attention. They balance and support each other perfectly in reaching their goals and dreams.
