This book breathed life into the historic Fairbanks home in Dedham, Massachusetts, which I recently had the pleasure of visiting. The author takes us along on the Fairbanks family’s journey from England as they cross treacherous seas to reach a new land and settle in an untamed wilderness, hoping for a better future. I got a vivid image of the family living in the home, with the soft glow of candlelight in the windows, children warming themselves by the hearth, and the family coming together around the table to share a savory pot of rabbit stew, despite their daily struggles and hardships. When I reached the last page, I felt a sense of loss, as if I were parting ways with dear friends.

This historical fiction novel will resonate with anyone whose ancestors arrived in the New World around the time of the Mayflower Pilgrims. This book offers a glimpse into the life and times of colonists in the Massachusetts Bay - a touching family story that resonates in modern times.

This book is a well-researched account of the Fairbanks family that arrived in America in 1633 and were among the founders of Dedham, Massachusetts. It is not a typical “ Pilgrim” story. It begins with an account of the religious and political conditions in England that forced the family to choose to head to the uncertainty of the New World. More importantly it is the story of a family and the difficulties they faced and overcame in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The author describes the everyday activities of Jonathan and Grace and their children in such a way that you feel you are there and really makes history come alive. The family dynamics are timeless and would sound familiar to anyone today. The house Jonathan built still stands today and is open to the public.
