This is the way the Punisher comic should be. The Red Brand is the perfect setting for this comic. Apparently the Red Brand means the violance and amount of blood is really ramped up but the language is censored. Warning this book contains bloody violence, brutal deaths and torture scenes.

The Punisher is back. Her wakes up bloody, beaten, surrounded by dead bodies, but with no idea who he is. Of course he is doing what comes naturally to him. However this time he is being used as someone else's weapon. You will be surprised maybe not by who, but their motives.

Not only is the Punisher more violent but this is a side of Tombstone I have never seen in comics before. This is not a comic for anyone squeamish. If anything the Punisher is even colder than then he usual. This book finishes with a thumbnail variant cover gallery.

While entertainingly brutal for the most part, two main quibbles:

What's the point of Marvel Red Band, precisely? The comics are marginally more gory, sure, but the "bad words" are still bleeped out. Major step down compared to Punisher MAX among other titles.

Also, I'm not sure Frank's antagonist-in-chief really had to be

Fantastic art, mid writing.

I’ve been a fan of The Punisher for only over 8 years but since his character got more famous with SM:BND I wanted to give the comics I haven’t read yet a try, and Marco Checchetto’s beautiful cover caught my eyes so I gave it a try. It definitely wasn’t bad, but a lot of story decisions felt like they were just there for pure shock value. I don’t care about gore in comics, especially when it comes to brutal characters like Frank, but this comic just over does it with the gore element driving the story to nowhere important. I get how this might be the point they’re trying to get across (like all that blood meaning nothing) but that’s not the only issue with this comic- it also has these cops trying to catch the Punisher but appear like two times total and then SPOILERS!! just arrest Tombstone right when Frank was about to kill him. Like… okay I guess 🫩.

That’s about it though. Ohta and Nitro did a wonderful job with the art!! I was mesmerized at every panel I looked at, and the variant covers were insane too! Like I said, just the writing is what makes this comic just above mid.

The art is really good, but i thought the writing wasn't always the best. Still an engaging story.

I’m always leery when comic publishers try to be more “mature” and bring in gimmicky things like “MAX” and “Black Label” and now Marvel trying again with Red Band, though I was curious since The Punisher is the perfect series to try and push the envelope again. This first batch of issues may not be up there with Garth Ennis’s truly explicit Punisher MAX, but Percy does a good job making the series earn its “red band” stripe, penning an incredibly violent and gorey take on Frank Castle. But props to Julius Otha’s art which is super bloody. I would have liked a better plot but at this point, we all know this was more about pushing the envelope than trying to write a compelling story.

Note: I read the individual issues.

I'm glad to see Frank Castle back, but I'd have liked to have more info on his return.

As it is, it almost seemed like this "red band" edition had gore for the sake of gore, which was one of the problems I had with the early MAX comics (not necessarily the Punisher Max, but some of the other series) where it seemed like sex, violence and cursing were shoehorned in to make this "mature".

In any case, this is a cool but violent story featuring The Punisher, Kingpin, and Tombstone. Some of the art has almost a manga feel to it.

Cool stuff, and like I said, I'm glad to see the real Punisher is back.

I find it really amusing that this is Red Band because there's some mild gore and people getting shot in the head, meanwhile Infernal Hulk has the lovable Avenger blowing a soldier's brains out through the back of his head by clapping in his face and that's alright, that's just good, wholesome entertainment for the entire family.

(The series was pretty fun, also)

It's great to see classic punisher return with all of the remorselessness and certainty of a current-day Judge Dredd. It's less great to see a 'Red Band' product afeared to use words like 'turd' and 'durn' (words are a supposition since @#$% covers up half the dialogue in every issue).

Commit or don't.

It’s funny this is red band but seems to be a toned down Punisher. Punisher letting Tombstone get away? Come the fuck on. I’m not sure Benjamin Percy realizes just who the fuck the Punisher is. I’m sort of worried to read his ongoing run after reading this. Very average and out of character moments for Frank.

Ok, this review is for just Punisher: Red Band #5. Goodreads is always a tad late on these Red Band issues. I love #5 just as much as I did #1 to #4. Plenty of raw unedited violence! This has been a premier version of the Punisher, paving the way for Punisher #1 next month!

Read the individual issues. Takes Punisher back to street-level, but also firmly within Marvel-616 continuity. Still leaves plenty to be explained, I suppose in the next series, about how he got back here after previous events…

Purchased the floppies for this series and was impressed by it. Frank Castle is back with all his mental wounds and guilt. Violent? Yes, but that's the exploitation/grind house element of The Punisher that makes it a guilty catharsis.

I'm a long time Punisher fan and have been through many iterations and writers. It's a very mixed bag and can range from poor to exceptional as the writing baton is passed from one to the next. The previous entry (Jason Aaron) was great so I expected this one to not land so well as has been the trend. I was cautiously optimistic thinking “Red Band” could be another Marvel Knights or MAX Imprint where Frank Castle can push the boundaries of what is deemed acceptable in mainstream comics. The first chapter was great, it did an excellent job of lining up the rest of the cast as violent, horrible villains. I'm critical and bored of page 1 protagonist amnesia as a plot device, again. Then came the curve-ball to make this arc "unique" from what had previously been published; The Punisher has an electronic device in his skull that is controlled by the Kingpin. Not even a simple explosive device to be used to coerce him, The Punisher is being piloted like a drone. I sighed and rolled my eyes at this insane fantasy tech. The book overall was pretty good, the violent gore became a bit of a one-trick pony seeming to exist to bump up the rating from Parental Advisory to Explicit Content for the notoriety, which I understand but the overuse reduced it's value. All in all I enjoyed the book more than I expected. I thought the writing and characters were great, but couldn't suspend disbelief long enough to see past the silly mind control gimmick for a full five star rating. It's actually a shame that this book was limited to just 5 issues when there was certainly enough meat left to allow it to run for double the length, I was invested in Kingpin and Tombstone as antagonists but we left only seeming to have scratched the surface of potential.

I so wish this story was longer! Frank Castle, The Kingpin & Tombstone. All these gentlemen need respect and a longer story of all that can be created and done. Great premise and idea to this story. It was too rushed. It was enjoyable, but it could have been given more depth.

This being a red band title made it so much better with the bloody art. Awesome story for the return of Frank to the main universe and this works as good as mini series to setup his main series.

Frank wakes up

Kills a bunch of criminals

Fights cops (doesn't kill them)

Decimates more criminals

Wins

Great punisher story all around. Still confused why the red band refuses to swear
