This book had been sitting on my basement shelves for years and I decided to read it before parting with it. First published in 1998 the book is very mild as far as romances go but it is unusual as far as Harlequin romances in go in that the male hero is a minister and faith plays a large role in the story. I liked that including the regular inclusion of "Mac"s conversations with God. Matt (short for Matilda) is a devoted policewoman whose whole large extended family have some connection to law and order. She feels there is no room for a love in her life because she knows the fear any partner would face as she goes out to face danger on a regular basis. Having said that - when the two meet (over desecration of the Virgin Mary) the attraction they have for each other is impossible to deny. They do have sex before marriage but not before the minister knows in his heart that he loves Matt and wants her permanently in his life. Could the sex scenes have been left out - yes, but on the whole I enjoyed the story and liked both of the main characters. This was a very quick read for me.

While this was an enjoyable enough love story, with a bit of a mystery thrown in, and set at Christmas besides, it was a little disappointing to me. The "romance" turned a bit graphic, and while I never enjoy that, it seemed even more distasteful because it involved a minister (the graphic description, not the romance itself).
