Demons are dangerous things. They inflame your insecurities, turn your weaknesses against you, and whisper their thoughts into your ears in the darkness.
The Vatican wants them locked up, or banished back to Hell. Short on priests and long on money, they’ve had to resort to paying bounties to keep things under control. That means looking outside of the faithful, to mercenaries like Cade Crowley.
That’s not his real name, but then, it never is. A drunk, and a gambler, and a womanizer, Cade’s steeped in sin himself, but he has one advantage: the sight. He can see demons, and he can see spirits, and that means he can fight them, so long as he can keep his own demons under control.
But the Vatican doesn’t have the war between good and evil to itself, not anymore. Other religions want in, and they’re recruiting bounty hunters of their own. Some have faith, and some just have bills to pay, but all of them want Cade’s bounties for themselves.
Cade Crowley, Demon Hunter #1 (Short Story):
One of the Church’s faithful has summoned something up from Hell, to try to make a deal. But he forgot the first rule of the dark arts: don’t call on something you don’t know how to control. He’s trapped in his own summoning circle, and the only one who can get him out is Cade.

Holy shit ....... what a tease! An exciting little tale concerning a lapsed Catholic demon bounty hunter. It's hard to tell who's the most flawed - Cade, the Church or the other religions trying to muscle in on the very profitable business of demon hunting. The character Cade holds a different type of allure, sort of like watching a gruesome traffic accident; bad but mesmerising. I'll definitely be reading more of this series.
Short and... well, not that sweet. I guess there's potential in the setting (and Kneupper's impressed me before), but the sub-characters didn't seem to exist as anything other than cardboard cutouts, and there's a little too much LOOK AT ME I AM FLAWED in regards to the main character.
First in a series, currently available for free on Amazon.
You get an intro into Cade Crowley, a demon hunter for the Catholic Church. I personally was not enthused with the story. I didn't find enough substance to retain my interest. I did finish it, but was glad it wasn't longer.
Clever, snappy pace and voice for the main character, and some promising worldbuilding. What I liked best was that the different religions have rival demon hunters with different philosophies on how and why they do what they do, and also the feeling that this is kind of a paranormal dystopia, where stuff is shifting from the usual "dark things in an unaware world" to "dark things kinda out there in the open, and some folks thinking that that's fine". There were some parts that felt too-handwaved-for-plot-purposes (if you were summoning a demon, wouldn't you lock your front door? if there was a circle that demons couldn't cross, wouldn't you put the DEMON inside it rather than yourself?), but overall, this was a great intro to this series and was interesting enough to make me want to see what more the author's got up his sleeve.
Even though it was a very short story,I still enjoyed it thoroughly. Cade is a demon, hunter.Paid by the Vatican.Just more secrets for them to cover up in Rome.He senses the demons, imps, spirits all around.Blessed or cursed? Having the Bible thumping group following you around, trying to get in on your business, doesn't make for a pleasant work environment.Thank God for the Catholics, even if they don't want to pay Cade what he is worth. So,we find him till his next adventure, drunk and waiting. If you want a small, easy read for a day, this is it.
Cade Crowley is an independent contractor, mostly working for the Catholic Church. He's a sort of bounty hunter, though what he hunts are demons, selling his captures to the Church.
Cade has his own vices, drinking and gambling, that keep his funds eternally on the edge.
Here he's sent to rescue a church member who, getting a divorce, decides to summon a demon to take care of his problem. He's fleeced by a con man who sells him junk and when he brings forth the demon, he has no control over it. Fortunately he's inside a pentagram. And has a cell phone.
This was a super fast yet enjoyable start to a new series inwhich a flawed being, Cade Crowley is charged with hunting demons for The Church.
Even though it was a short read it reminded me of this show Dresdain Files (its also a book series) that I use to watch and thus I think it has promise.
This wasn't bad for a quick short book but felt I would have like a longer book to make a better judgement. I'm intrigued by the story enough to try the second one. Kind of reminded me of a modern day version of the Jackman version of Van Helsing... maybe with a bit more attitude.
I really liked the characters especially the main character. The world they live in is very interesting. The idea of the Pentecostals wanting in on the action was great!
Had me hooked from the get go! It's a short story, but I love the concept and the main character was fascinating. Some additional character description would be nice for those of us who like to imagine the scenes in our head. I have purchased and downloaded books 2 and 3-5. Can't wait to read them!
