Yes, I know some will view my 5-star rating for this how-to book to be suspect since A) the author is a longtime friend and B) I had the privilege of being this book’s line editor. But, really, if your goal is to write your memoir or some other work of nonfiction, is there a better book out there to guide you on your way? Answer: No! This is the resource you need if you want to be educated, encouraged and entertained on how to write and publish that book that’s been lurking inside you all these many years. Bob Welch is the founder of the Beachside Writers Workshop, where he’s been helping hundreds of would-be authors for nearly 20 years. “Writer” is essentially a compilation of all the insights and advice that Bob has distilled at those literary retreats on the Oregon Coast. In addition to sharing many of the successes and setbacks in his own writing life, and those of other authors and teachers, Bob includes some stellar samples of writing by Beachside Writers rookies — inspirational proof that, with diligence and determination, virtually anyone can rise to the title of “Writer.”
In 2005, Bob Welch put together Beachside Writers to which nearly a thousand people came to learn how to write non-fiction. This is his way of sharing his knowledge and sharing with all of us ways to write our own non-fiction and memoirs. He includes snippets of stories written by those wannabe writers (one of mine is included) and offers the skill set to begin as well as some relevant questions and short assignments for the readers. There are 40 succinct chapters to help writers along the way.
