"The gods had no say in this imperative destiny"

Maeve Willawood does not crave the life she has been forced to live. As one of the chosen, she has been punished with a role that goes against her morals. In a world born from chaos, the gods responsible have carefully selected mortals to carry a piece of their divine power. A gift to some, but a curse to others.

An outlier from the others chosen, the power that Maeve has been deemed worthy of comes with a devastating responsibility. With her gift being a rarity and her life being threatened, Maeve's pessimism heightens when she is appointed a guard whose duties include watching her every move, whether she likes it or not. When she learns that she has no choice but to adapt to her new lifestyle, Maeve finds comfort in a set of cerulean eyes.

Wowwwwww. This was so good, I read it in 2 days and wow, did it consume my every thought in that time.
I loved the magic system, it was so interesting and unique, and our FMC had no idea how her magic would transform her life when she was gifted by the Gods!
Loved it, and Sebastian our MMC is swoon-worthy. I cannot wait to see what happens next. I'm so ready.

WOW. This was unexpected. I stayed up until 2am to finish this book.

I originally picked this up because I was selected as an ARC reader for book two. I’m in several bookish Facebook groups and kept seeing it recommended over and over. I genuinely thought they had to be bots. I stand corrected. This book is severely underhyped. It’s honestly criminal that it isn’t more popular, because it had no business being this good!

I’m obsessed with the magic system. It’s giving Fourth Wing vibes, but with jewels that grant magic instead of dragons. If you loved the academia setting of fourth wing, this is for you.

Tropes:
-Gifted by gods and goddesses
-Academy setting
-Anxiety/depression
-Trials
-High stakes political tension
-Betrayal
-Slow burn
-Chosen one
-Yearning

Maeve and Sebastian truly deliver on slow burn. The tension had me ready to implode. Like please for the love of gods just kiss already. 😩 the wait was well worth it because daddy Seb delivered. 🔥. There was also a vague confession of Sebastian’s best friend having feelings for Maeve near the end? Color me intrigued, but I need to see how that plays out.

There is a lot of miscommunication between the two. Sebastian is haunted by a dark upbringing and Maeve is an anxious✨ girly. She’s quick to jump to conclusions and is very much a “yell first, ask questions never” mentality and it’s frustrating. I wanted to jump in the book and shake her like, girl WTF is you’re problem. 😭 why are we acting like this???? There is a betrayal at the end of the book and Maeve doesn’t wanna hear it. I just know she’s going to be pissing me off from the jump in book 2.

I absolutely cannot wait to continue this series. Short story long: if this isn’t on your TBR, please add immediately. Thank me later.

A Romantasy, Gods/Goddesses, Chosen one, Love/Loss, Friendship vibes on par with Fourth Wing, Spiiiiiice, Slooooow burn, an MMC that you'd do ANYTHING for, a FMC who is bad fkin ass - with Celeana (TOG) Vibes, unique magic system, the word 'fuck'is used about 10000 times, THE MOST UNHINGED ENDING.

If that all sounds pretty cool to you, then yes, read this.

“A gift to some. But a curse to others.”

I had so much fun reading this book! It kept me up late reading 😮
A Kingdom of Salt and Stone is a fantasy book following Maeve in her journey with the power she has been deemed worthy of.

Maeve is our FMC and “anxiety rep” character! Her thoughts show us exactly that, but Maeve is also so strong! Like, now she is the most powerful mortal alive, and I think she actually dealt pretty good with it 😅
Sebastian is our prince 🤭 the King’s son, part of the royal guard and Maeve’s new bodyguard 👀 Seb is our traumatised boy and I want all good things for him (but he also has some secrets and I’m watching him 😶‍🌫️)
Pia is my favourite female character! She is a girl’s girl and she is sooo funny! 💃🏻
Kohen is still a more reserved character, don’t get to know him a lot.
Now Sawyer 😮‍💨 Sawyer is my favourite male character for sure! Only the first book in this trilogy and he already had major character growth, like what?! I just love him and he deserves all good things and more ❤️

The plot was well done! This book stands on its own, even belonging to a trilogy, and that’s such an important thing to me. I want to know more about our main group characters tho, and also about our enemy, because I felt intrigued by his words and actions 😫

I caught some minor errors in words or phrasing, but nothing major that would lessen my enjoyment!

So excited to read the 2nd book in this trilogy 💙

Love love loveeeeed this book so much!

There are many themes of mental health in this book that were just so lovely to see represented in this way. If you’re an anxious person/overthinker this book will make you feel so seen. The characters were so relatable that I wish I could hang out with them IRL.

The fantasy part of this book was also dope af. The magic system was unique and interesting. The world building was great, I felt like I was truly a part of the world the author created!

Thank you so much for sharing this ARC with me for me to read and review!

"Though I wanted to— more than anything in the world— there was no returning a gift from the gods." (Ch 3)

Maeve... insecure, anxiety-ridden, emotional. She wants nothing to do with the hand of fate she'd been dealt and did not take well to it to begin with. With some reluctant help from her brooding "babysitter", Sebastian, and the support of found friends, she copes, but she doesn't have it easy. In fact, not one thing goes easily for her. She's the unknown, and we all know how people react to that which they do not know...

"There was no other choice. I couldn't change my fate— I just had to live it." (Ch 6)

The tension between the characters was all over the place, one moment hot and then abruptly cold. The back and forth kind of got annoying after a while until they finally came together.

"....Some souls are simply designed to love one another. Like the stars are destined to love the heavens.” (Ch 25)

Was she blessed or cursed? Lots and lots of angst, longing, anxiety, destruction, utter brutality - physically and through war, and pain, so much pain... but a bit of love and friendship too. I loved many aspects of this book, but also wanted to shake some of the characters at several points. TG for the magical healing aspect, or they'd be screwed! We'll see where the open ending takes things in the next book!

“Being scared about things to come doesn't mean that you're broken.” (Ch 13)

This series opener feels like Fourth Wing -- just swap the dragons for jewels.

AKOSAS is a "gem" of an opener to a series. I am picky with my 5 star reviews, but this book had everything I look for in a romantasy: unique magic, a convincing love story, relatable and flawed main characters, "climb-in"able aesthetic, fast-paced action, hidden mysteries, and more.

Webster does a great job balancing some spicy romance with gripping plot. As for the MCs, it was incredibly refreshing to see some mental health representation in Maeve, as well as a different kind of sexy&strong than we normally see in this genre in Sebastian

Hard to believe this book is a DEBUT--- can't wait to see where this author takes the story (and my heart...because I am absolutely committed and along for the ride.)

I was fortunate to receive an ARC of this novel in return for honest feedback.

Brief Summary:  In a world where gods gift select mortals at birth with a portion of their powers, political war is on the horizon.  Maeve, an unwilling recipient of the rarest of the god's gifts, is forced to serve a King whose morals contradict with her own.  Caught between a prophecy, politics, and love - will Maeve discover how to harness her gift and protect the ones she holds dear?

WOW!  I absolutely devoured Liv Webster's debut novel, A Kingdom of Salt and Stone!

The world building was perfect.  Just enough detail to transport the reader into the story.  The magic that exists in this world was unique.  I appreciated how those gifted with powers from the gods needed to ground themselves and feel a connection in their soul to harness it - this was more satisfying to me than saying a spell or flicking a wand.

The slow burn romance was perfectly balanced with the need for the FMC to grow into her own.

Triggers that the author is up front about are centered primarily around sensitivity to topics surrounding mental health.

As someone that suffers from diagnosed anxiety disorder that results in panic attacks - I hesitated at first before continuing, but I'm so glad I did.  I love the raw and brutal accuracy in which anxiety is portrayed.  The FMC, despite her anxiety, is portrayed as strong and independent.  Her mental health is never presented as a weakness or something she needs to overcome.  Liv Webster does a beautiful job of depicting it as a disorder that exists but you can thrive despite.  It is not pushed to the back or dismissed - which I think is such an important message to send.

This debute novel has cemented Liv Webster as an auto-buy author for me.  I plan to throw my hat in the ring for an ARC of book 2!

Absolutely ADORED this read! I was lucky to have received an ARC of this book and immediately fell in love with the characters and world building. The writing was fantastic and well paced, keeping me intrigued from start to finish. The slow burn was burning 🔥 enemies to lovers. I do have to admit- the MMC Seb, his slutty little glasses, and addiction for smutty novels was hands down my favorite character. Maeve is a bit more complex and I feel like we have yet to see the extent of just how strong her powers will develop as the series goes on. Academia setting. Good character development all around. Highly recommend!

*I received an Advanced Readers Copy in exchange for my honest review*

A Kingdom of Salt and Stone is the kind of novel that reminds me why I love romantasy. The world is vivid and atmospheric, shaped by gods whose influence lingers in every detail, making it feel both magical and dangerous. Maeve stood out to me as a heroine because she isn’t flawless or fearless, instead she’s HUMAN, conflicted, and her growth felt so authentic. As someone who also suffers from anxiety and panic attacks, I thought the author did a great job with representation through the main character.
The romance was just as gripping, simmering with tension that added depth to the story without overpowering it. I loved how the relationships, the politics, and the looming sense of destiny all worked together to keep me turning pages. By the end, I was completely invested in both the characters and the larger conflict. This is an addictive, emotional start to a series I cannot wait to continue.

This was such an unexpected read (in a good way!) 😍 I actually found this book via Tiktok where the author had posted some character art and was like instant YESSS, looks right up my alley lol 😂

The magic system in this is so different and unique, and we still don’t even have the full extent of it in my opinion! Magic is gifted to the select few from the Gods/Goddesses granted to them in the form of gems upon their conception but not revealed until their 21st birthday. Each gem represents the different God/Goddesses that granted it and the type of magic.

There is a big anxiety representation in this book and while I may not have any type of diagnosed anxiety, I am prone to my own forms of anxiety and could appreciate and really see myself in the FMC and how she handles everything happening in her life. She breaks down, has a million things running around in her head at once, and lashes out at the people she loves. But also, she learns to communicate and apologize as well. And then even how our MMC, Sebastian, deals with his own anxiety too and the forced gore and bloodshed in his life was so different than your typical romantasy MMC.

By the way, I found a new favorite micro-trope of mine: an MMC who reads spicy romance AND wears reading glasses 🥵 hot 🥵

Also, I really appreciated the mix of miscommunication but THEN the characters actually having discussions as well. Everyone is still definitely keeping their secrets and goes through their tantrums of ignoring each other when they shouldn’t but also turn around at points and actually talk it out. And not just between the MC’s but also the side characters too.

As always, we have one of my favorite tropes in here: found family 😍 the side characters always make a book in my mind and I love that each one of them got to step up in their own way here. I AM curious to see what’s going to happen next book with our MC’s and one of our side characters….something’s going on there with them and while I am leaning a certain way, I feel (and kind of hope) I’m going to be wrong….lol

We have a few scenes of spice 🌶️ in here. This may not be enemies to lovers but it’s still slow burn. The FMC and MMC in here definitely take their sweet time admitting to each other any feelings they have lol. But when we DO get to spicy time? 🥵 whew. Let’s just say this spicy novels Sebastian is reading rubs off on him 😜 the mouth on that man 🥵🥵 I need more of it! Lol

We end on a big cliffhanger here and I’m SUPER intrigued where book 2 is going to go from here. So many revelations at the end there and at this point, I don’t feel like you know which way is up anymore 😂

Uuhm this easily made one of my top reads!

Tha magic system with constellastones gifted by gods was so cool. And many things I assumed would happen in any typical romantasy, did not! And i also have ro mention that it was very refreshing to read when everyone had normal names!

When Maeve turns 21 she dreaded to see if she was gifted by one of the gods and given a constellastone. Every person gifted had to report to the king and train in the Caelastis Soldiers Academy, to be a guard and serve for ten years. Maeve really did not want to be apart of anything with the king and his unfair ruling. So when she found out she was gifted she reluctantly went to face her new future.

Maeves unique gift makes the king put his best guard to watch over her, all the time. Sebastian, who also happens to be the kings son, is the one put to service.
He is not thrilled to be a babysitter and she does'nt want one either.

When I read:
I turned to see Sebastian standing with one hip relaxed against the doorframe - he seemed to have a thing for lounging against entryways.
I literally laughed out loud! Such a fun way to describe that very known thing men do in romance books!

To have an fmc with panic attacks she also actually don't stifle or control was also so real.

The relationship between Maeve and Sebastian, the yearning and love. I just love them!!
Friends who are fierce in their loyalty and the true friendships that develop between Maeve and Pia but also eventually Sawyer was nice. That the whole group became close.
Also the humour with the crab that was brought up from time to time: excellent!
The magic system and the different abilities and how their wielded is intruiging.

The ending broke mye heart a bit though and also the ending I might add: What the actual frick???!!!

My favourite quote from the book:

"I am the dark," Sebastian muttered, his tone empty and hollow. "You are the light. And when it comes to you, I don't want to be in the shadows."

Thank you Lic Webster for gifting me an e-arc, I am inlove with this universe!

From the very first chapter, this book pulled me in with its celestial worldbuilding and unique magic system. The celestial event and crystals embedding in the skin to grant powers was so unique, I loved that twist.

Maeve was such an interesting main character to follow. She’s suddenly blessed by the goddess Blythe (something that’s never happened before), and the king immediately wants to use her as a weapon of war. Maeve is thrown into a world of duty, training, and expectations she never asked for. Between the pressure, the training, the consistent war between her heart and her brain, as well her own crippling anxiety, Maeve was such a relatable FMC. Even while she was in the middle of all this magical chaos, she constantly battles with the line between being a weapon of war and simply being herself. Watching her grow while trying to resist the role others want for her was one of the strongest parts of the story.

The slow-burn romance with Sebastian? So good. ❤️‍🔥I loved how their feelings simmered beneath the surface for so long before finally exploding! Their connection had the same push-pull dynamic that gives me total Zodiac Academy vibes, which made me fly through the pages even faster. Definitely gave me that addictive push-pull energy I was hoping for.

The pacing builds toward a prophecy, a war, and Maeve’s ultimate test of power. I enjoyed the dream sequences with the goddess, the sense of looming destiny, and the explosive battles (both physical and mental) . This one gave me slight Zodiac Academy/Fourth Wing vibes with the school and training parts. The ending was dramatic, emotional, and left just enough unresolved to keep me eager for the next book. If you’re into slow burn, fantasy with celestial magic, complicated heroines, this one’s for you.

What a journey this book took me on! The author painted such a clear picture of the Prilarean Empire that I could see every beach, castle, and forest she described. I enjoyed the creativity of the discovery of being “gifted” with magical abilities at the age of 21 based off of what god/goddess chose you. Following Maeve on her journey, her highs and lows, was truly an adventure that leaves me wanting more, especially after that cliffhanger! We all know that the crab was truly the VIP of this story. The friendships that were made have been beautiful to watch and I cannot wait to watch them develop further in the sequel! Seeing Maeve go from being so unsure of her gift, struggling to accept it, to finding a confidence within herself to stand up and defy those who would use her for their own selfish gains, was an adventure anyone would want to go on. Will a love triangle come in the future? Only the author knows, but I’m here to watch all of it unfold in the future!

Favorite quotes: “With all the books I’ve read, you’d think I would have discovered the words to express how beautiful you look this evening. But I don’t think such words exist.”

“You are every single thing I’ve needed to complete my soul.”

“I’m not a coward. And you don’t control me.”

Unique and Amazing

This book is Liv Webster's debut novel, A Kingdom of Salt and Stone (AKOSAS), and the first installment in the Jewel-Light Series. I loved it so freaking much that I can already say I'm definitely reading book two. That’s how much I enjoyed it. You’ll find it very hard to believe this was her debut.

Before anything else, I have to say—sorry, Liv—I really liked Sebastian, but I’m #TeamSawyer until the end of time. Because, Gods, I need a Sawyer in my life, and if he were to leave that beautiful realm and come live with me, I truly wouldn’t mind.

As for our beautiful FMC, Maeve Willawood, she’s such an amazing female character to read about. I loved watching how, even when she was afraid, insecure, or anxious, she always did what needed to be done. In the end, I don’t think she truly acknowledged just how strong she really is. Her journey—from not wanting to be blessed by the Gods to becoming unstoppable with power—is such an incredible arc in character development that everyone should read.

Sebastian, our beautiful and traumatized prince, the best soldier among the king’s guard, is a boy with a dark soul full of ghosts. He has a long road ahead of him to find healing.

The worldbuilding was absolutely wonderful to dive into—the unique magic system, the mystery surrounding the story, the whole plot was simply mind-blowing. And that cliffhanger at the end? I honestly have no idea what the second book will bring.

The slow burn romance was very convincing and well written. Even though I don’t personally ship Seb and Maeve 😂, I enjoyed their relationship development, and the spice was just perfect.

The supporting characters are also an essential part of this story—my beautiful, strong, and perfect Sawyer, along with sweet Pia, Kohen, and Jocelyn. This book definitely wouldn’t be the same without them.

So, if you love a good and unique romantasy, full of new and thrilling adventures, you need to pick this one up.

Thank you, Liv, for the ARC and the amazing opportunity and experience of reading AKOSAS.

Tropes to expect:
🔺Unique Magic System
🔺Slow Burn
🔺Gods/Goddesses
🔺Enemies to Lovers
🔺Forced Proximity
🔺Fantasy Academia
🔺Mental Health Rep

I have enjoyed almost every ARC I have read this year. But a few make it to my list of my favorite reads all year. This book is one of them! In a world where the gods bestow gifts that turn chosen mortals into weapons of war, one girl receives the rarest power of all—marking her as both a savior and a threat. Trained to be a soldier, she falls for a prince caught on the edge of battle. As war threatens to consume the realms, she must embrace her destiny—and when the final moment comes, a goddess grants her the ultimate gift, changing everything. A gripping tale of divine power, sacrifice, and a love that defies fate.

⚔️Synopsis:
Maeve Willawood does not want to be one of the chosen for in her kingdom to be chosen means living your life for the king. Being chosen means being selected to carry a piece of the gods’ divine powers. However, Maeve soon learns the gods do not care what she wants and not only is she chosen but she is chosen by the rarest of the divinity’s powers. This comes not only with unwanted responsibilities and threats, but with a guard that stays by her side night and day. Maeve must learn to adapt in this new setting and figure out who she can trust.

⚔️Thoughts:
We love a chosen one trope! Maeve starts out reluctant and resentful for being chosen, but soon makes friends and adapts. Maeve and her guard, Sebastian are like oil and water. However, they soon find out they have some common enemies and common ground that help them bond. Poor Sebastian, our trauma boy, has so much healing to do, but Maeve and his group of friends and cousin, really help him through. I enjoyed Maeve’s character arc from the beginning of not wanting anything to do with her powers to working hard to figure them out. And that cliffhanger 😫😫 A phenomenal debut!! ✨🖤

This was a phenomenal debut from Liv Webster! I could not put this book down while I was reading.

This book had so much to offer - a unique magic system, enemies to lovers, found family, forced proximity, mental health rep, chosen one, and so much more!

Maeve was so relatable with how she handled all the changes in her life. It was nice to see our FMC handle everything the same way I anticipate I would in the same scenario. 😂 that didn’t make her any less badass, though. But it’s always nice to see that level of mental health representation!

There’s a nice slow burn romance in this one, and that included plenty of angst and tension. But once it ignited, things got delightfully hot between our FMC and MMC! 🌶️

I enjoyed getting to see Maeve start to come into her powers, and I’m excited to see her grow stronger as the series progresses.

Prepare for one hell of an ending! I cannot wait for Book 2 to find out what happens next. Thank you so much to Liv Webster and IRIS Influencer Society for the gifted copy of this one! 🗡️✨

OMG! The ending to this I need more! I need to know! What a cliffhanger….

This story completely sucked me in from the get go! I could not put it down I devoured it in 2 days! I loved reading Maeve’s story and watching her go from someone who didn’t want powers to become the bad*ss FMC she is.
The slow burn romance between the 2 main characters 👩‍🍳 💋
The way Liv writes her characters makes them relatable. And her world building is fantastic. I absolutely loved this story and I think others will too!

“Feel sorrow that this journey was not in your plans, but feel excited that a new journey awaits you. Feel scared that you do not know what is to come, but feel blessed that the gods deemed you worthy.

Some souls are simply designed to love one another. Like the stars are destined to love the heavens.”

Thank you so so much to the author for an ARC of the first book in the Jewel-Light Trilogy!! This was so well written and so descriptive, it had me hooked right away. The action scenes were fast paced and I loved the mental health rep in the FMC and the fact that the MMC also has feelings (unheard of in most books imo). BUT the yearning!!!! The tension!!!! The amount of times I’ve wanted to scream at the MMC!!!! And after that cliffhanger I can’t wait to see how the rest of the story unfolds in the next 2 books. For now, I’ll be patiently waiting for book 1 to be out so I can add a book trophy to my lil shelf.

Wow! That was some sort of a ride ! This book was a unique take on magic systems and how they are used in a fantasy tale.

It's based around a kingdom ruled by King Hawthorne and how anyone who is gifted by the gods must attend his Caeleatis soldiers academy and provide a minimum of a decades service to the crown.

The way that gemstones that are gifted to certain people are where the magical powers come from,it is so unique. It's the first time I've read this kind if magic and I ate it up!

The intricate world building of the history of the gods and the magic system is amazing and intriguing.

The MFC, Maeve starts off as sweet and innocent but becomes the biggest of bad asses and the relationships she builds with the other characters all play a huge part in her "coming out of herself "

I love the side characters of Pia, Sawyer and Kohen and how they play a large part in the building of Maeve character as her friends, protectors and found family.

I love the twists and turns and was pleasantly surprised when I thought it had to be the normal twists coming up that we see in most books, but it wasn't that way at all.

I really enjoyed the academy style setup for the majority of the book and how Maeve is trained with both physical combat aswell as learning to harness her power, even it isn't by her choice at first.

When it comes to spice there is a few spicy scenes but they are not lengthy pages and pages of them but still good and appropriate for the first book. I have a few thoughts though on how that may progress into the 2nd book. Maybe a love triangle???

Oh and if you love a cliffhanger then you will get one here!

I cant wait to follow this series Into the next book.

I rate this 4.5 stars!!!

I had the pleasure of reading Liv Webster's debut novel, A Kingdom of Salt and Stone (AKOSAS) and wow, I was blown away.

The story starts out with strong world building that I found to be interesting, and easy to follow. Main character Maeve's personality is alluring and magnetic, specifically pertaining to her strength and struggles with mental health, which I found to be a topic that Webster excelled in portraying, especially in the foundational chapters. Maeve's encounters with anxiety are portrayed in a balanced way that may be easier to understand for readers who have not experienced it themselves, while also being specific enough for those who have to relate. I also appreciated that while mental health was an underlying thread, it did not become too distracting from the well thought out plot. I found Webster's descriptive language to be strong and beautiful, and I could easily imagine the world she created in detail as I was reading. In addition, all the plot lines tied together nicely, and I didn't feel like there were any loose ends besides ideas that would be carried into book 2.

There were many times throughout this book where I didn't know what was going to happen next, which I really appreciate. The plot had dimension that made sense, and I felt I had a strong and clear understanding of the characters and the decisions they made, especially Sebastian and Maeve. I really loved Maeve's friendship with her best friend Pia, which was painted as a meaningful and loving female sister-like bond. I liked the dynamic of their friend group, and I am curious to see Kohen's potential character development more in book 2.

The ending left me wondering what would happen next, and I already can't wait for book 2!

ARC Review: A Kingdom of Salt and Stone by Liv Webster
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 (4/5, or 7.5-8/10)

Ok yall- this was an ARC read for me and I was super excited. It gives fantasy academia/war college. Maeve is bestowed a gift from the gods on her 21st birthday and she of course gets the rarest gems from the most aloof goddess. What are her powers? She doesn’t even know.

The opening scene was ✨chefs kiss✨ I was pulled in. And very worried about Maeve lol the story can drag on at some points BUT I feel like that’s on purpose to lay a lot of groundwork for the second novel and give us as much story as possible. It feels like you follow them day by day.

I wish we got more training or magic wielding scenes and more school scenes in general. But with an impending war I guess that’s hard to do lol

Super cool magic system, political turmoil, tension between friends and found family.

MY ONLY COMPLAINT: is the hot and cold back and forth between main characters. When we want them to band together, they start separating, when we need them to focus on battle- they’re having heartfelt convos 😮‍💨😂 I get the intention from the author. So this is just my pet peeve simply because I can’t relate to that dynamic.

Big representation on anxiety, panic attacks, self doubt, how childhood trauma shapes us as adults, and having to put others first in times of turmoil.

Overall a good read! Started quickly, a little slow in the middle, and then picked up at the end and I was sad when it was over.

I cannot wait to get my hands on the sequel to this book. This book follows Maeve Willawood a young woman who simply doesn’t want this “gift” the gods have given her. Being one of the chosen is bad enough but she discovers she’s different from the others, and her whole life is flipped on its head. With the rarity of her gift, she is given a guard whose sole responsibility is keeping her safe. Meaning he’s watching her every move whether she wants him there or not. Things only gets more complicated as times goes on. Tensions rise both in the kingdom and between her and her guard. Maeve must learn to sink or swim and to fight to protect those she loves.
I honestly love this book so much. The main character is a gorgeous mix of “protect me” and “I can protect myself”. Watching Maeve grow throughout the pages of this book was incredible. I also really appreciated how her relationship with the MMC changed and shifted from the beginning when she first laid eyes on him to that last chapter. I am honesty so impatient to see what happens next, to know how they move forward from where they were in the last chapter.
Additionally the world building was phenomenal. The way we learn so much about the world and how it works without a random lore dump was incredible. The author did an amazing job telling us so much, right when we would need to know it.
If you are looking for a fantasy book I definitely recommend this one. It’s definitely one I will be rereading.
