"The gods had no say in this imperative destiny"

Maeve Willawood does not crave the life she has been forced to live. As one of the chosen, she has been punished with a role that goes against her morals. In a world born from chaos, the gods responsible have carefully selected mortals to carry a piece of their divine power. A gift to some, but a curse to others.

An outlier from the others chosen, the power that Maeve has been deemed worthy of comes with a devastating responsibility. With her gift being a rarity and her life being threatened, Maeve's pessimism heightens when she is appointed a guard whose duties include watching her every move, whether she likes it or not. When she learns that she has no choice but to adapt to her new lifestyle, Maeve finds comfort in a set of cerulean eyes.

Powering through angst, battling heartache, and overcoming betrayal, Maeve learns just how hard she needs to fight if she wants to save what matters most.

Wowwwwww. This was so good, I read it in 2 days and wow, did it consume my every thought in that time.
I loved the magic system, it was so interesting and unique, and our FMC had no idea how her magic would transform her life when she was gifted by the Gods!
Loved it, and Sebastian our MMC is swoon-worthy. I cannot wait to see what happens next. I'm so ready.

A Romantasy, Gods/Goddesses, Chosen one, Love/Loss, Friendship vibes on par with Fourth Wing, Spiiiiiice, Slooooow burn, an MMC that you'd do ANYTHING for, a FMC who is bad fkin ass - with Celeana (TOG) Vibes, unique magic system, the word 'fuck'is used about 10000 times, THE MOST UNHINGED ENDING.

If that all sounds pretty cool to you, then yes, read this.

"Though I wanted to— more than anything in the world— there was no returning a gift from the gods." (Ch 3)

Maeve... insecure, anxiety-ridden, emotional. She wants nothing to do with the hand of fate she'd been dealt and did not take well to it to begin with. With some reluctant help from her brooding "babysitter", Sebastian, and the support of found friends, she copes, but she doesn't have it easy. In fact, not one thing goes easily for her. She's the unknown, and we all know how people react to that which they do not know...

"There was no other choice. I couldn't change my fate— I just had to live it." (Ch 6)

The tension between the characters was all over the place, one moment hot and then abruptly cold. The back and forth kind of got annoying after a while until they finally came together.

"....Some souls are simply designed to love one another. Like the stars are destined to love the heavens.” (Ch 25)

Was she blessed or cursed? Lots and lots of angst, longing, anxiety, destruction, utter brutality - physically and through war, and pain, so much pain... but a bit of love and friendship too. I loved many aspects of this book, but also wanted to shake some of the characters at several points. TG for the magical healing aspect, or they'd be screwed! We'll see where the open ending takes things in the next book!

“Being scared about things to come doesn't mean that you're broken.” (Ch 13)

Love love loveeeeed this book so much!

There are many themes of mental health in this book that were just so lovely to see represented in this way. If you’re an anxious person/overthinker this book will make you feel so seen. The characters were so relatable that I wish I could hang out with them IRL.

The fantasy part of this book was also dope af. The magic system was unique and interesting. The world building was great, I felt like I was truly a part of the world the author created!

Thank you so much for sharing this ARC with me for me to read and review!

This series opener feels like Fourth Wing -- just swap the dragons for jewels.

AKOSAS is a "gem" of an opener to a series. I am picky with my 5 star reviews, but this book had everything I look for in a romantasy: unique magic, a convincing love story, relatable and flawed main characters, "climb-in"able aesthetic, fast-paced action, hidden mysteries, and more.

Webster does a great job balancing some spicy romance with gripping plot. As for the MCs, it was incredibly refreshing to see some mental health representation in Maeve, as well as a different kind of sexy&strong than we normally see in this genre in Sebastian

Hard to believe this book is a DEBUT--- can't wait to see where this author takes the story (and my heart...because I am absolutely committed and along for the ride.)

I was fortunate to receive an ARC of this novel in return for honest feedback.

Brief Summary:  In a world where gods gift select mortals at birth with a portion of their powers, political war is on the horizon.  Maeve, an unwilling recipient of the rarest of the god's gifts, is forced to serve a King whose morals contradict with her own.  Caught between a prophecy, politics, and love - will Maeve discover how to harness her gift and protect the ones she holds dear?

WOW!  I absolutely devoured Liv Webster's debut novel, A Kingdom of Salt and Stone!

The world building was perfect.  Just enough detail to transport the reader into the story.  The magic that exists in this world was unique.  I appreciated how those gifted with powers from the gods needed to ground themselves and feel a connection in their soul to harness it - this was more satisfying to me than saying a spell or flicking a wand.

The slow burn romance was perfectly balanced with the need for the FMC to grow into her own.

Triggers that the author is up front about are centered primarily around sensitivity to topics surrounding mental health.

As someone that suffers from diagnosed anxiety disorder that results in panic attacks - I hesitated at first before continuing, but I'm so glad I did.  I love the raw and brutal accuracy in which anxiety is portrayed.  The FMC, despite her anxiety, is portrayed as strong and independent.  Her mental health is never presented as a weakness or something she needs to overcome.  Liv Webster does a beautiful job of depicting it as a disorder that exists but you can thrive despite.  It is not pushed to the back or dismissed - which I think is such an important message to send.

This debute novel has cemented Liv Webster as an auto-buy author for me.  I plan to throw my hat in the ring for an ARC of book 2!

Absolutely ADORED this read! I was lucky to have received an ARC of this book and immediately fell in love with the characters and world building. The writing was fantastic and well paced, keeping me intrigued from start to finish. The slow burn was burning 🔥 enemies to lovers. I do have to admit- the MMC Seb, his slutty little glasses, and addiction for smutty novels was hands down my favorite character. Maeve is a bit more complex and I feel like we have yet to see the extent of just how strong her powers will develop as the series goes on. Academia setting. Good character development all around. Highly recommend!

*I received an Advanced Readers Copy in exchange for my honest review*

A Kingdom of Salt and Stone is the kind of novel that reminds me why I love romantasy. The world is vivid and atmospheric, shaped by gods whose influence lingers in every detail, making it feel both magical and dangerous. Maeve stood out to me as a heroine because she isn’t flawless or fearless, instead she’s HUMAN, conflicted, and her growth felt so authentic. As someone who also suffers from anxiety and panic attacks, I thought the author did a great job with representation through the main character.
The romance was just as gripping, simmering with tension that added depth to the story without overpowering it. I loved how the relationships, the politics, and the looming sense of destiny all worked together to keep me turning pages. By the end, I was completely invested in both the characters and the larger conflict. This is an addictive, emotional start to a series I cannot wait to continue.

From the very first chapter, this book pulled me in with its celestial worldbuilding and unique magic system. The celestial event and crystals embedding in the skin to grant powers was so unique, I loved that twist.

Maeve was such an interesting main character to follow. She’s suddenly blessed by the goddess Blythe (something that’s never happened before), and the king immediately wants to use her as a weapon of war. Maeve is thrown into a world of duty, training, and expectations she never asked for. Between the pressure, the training, the consistent war between her heart and her brain, as well her own crippling anxiety, Maeve was such a relatable FMC. Even while she was in the middle of all this magical chaos, she constantly battles with the line between being a weapon of war and simply being herself. Watching her grow while trying to resist the role others want for her was one of the strongest parts of the story.

The slow-burn romance with Sebastian? So good. ❤️‍🔥I loved how their feelings simmered beneath the surface for so long before finally exploding! Their connection had the same push-pull dynamic that gives me total Zodiac Academy vibes, which made me fly through the pages even faster. Definitely gave me that addictive push-pull energy I was hoping for.

The pacing builds toward a prophecy, a war, and Maeve’s ultimate test of power. I enjoyed the dream sequences with the goddess, the sense of looming destiny, and the explosive battles (both physical and mental) . This one gave me slight Zodiac Academy/Fourth Wing vibes with the school and training parts. The ending was dramatic, emotional, and left just enough unresolved to keep me eager for the next book. If you’re into slow burn, fantasy with celestial magic, complicated heroines, this one’s for you.

Unique and Amazing

This book is Liv Webster's debut novel, A Kingdom of Salt and Stone (AKOSAS), and the first installment in the Jewel-Light Series. I loved it so freaking much that I can already say I'm definitely reading book two. That’s how much I enjoyed it. You’ll find it very hard to believe this was her debut.

Before anything else, I have to say—sorry, Liv—I really liked Sebastian, but I’m #TeamSawyer until the end of time. Because, Gods, I need a Sawyer in my life, and if he were to leave that beautiful realm and come live with me, I truly wouldn’t mind.

As for our beautiful FMC, Maeve Willawood, she’s such an amazing female character to read about. I loved watching how, even when she was afraid, insecure, or anxious, she always did what needed to be done. In the end, I don’t think she truly acknowledged just how strong she really is. Her journey—from not wanting to be blessed by the Gods to becoming unstoppable with power—is such an incredible arc in character development that everyone should read.

Sebastian, our beautiful and traumatized prince, the best soldier among the king’s guard, is a boy with a dark soul full of ghosts. He has a long road ahead of him to find healing.

The worldbuilding was absolutely wonderful to dive into—the unique magic system, the mystery surrounding the story, the whole plot was simply mind-blowing. And that cliffhanger at the end? I honestly have no idea what the second book will bring.

The slow burn romance was very convincing and well written. Even though I don’t personally ship Seb and Maeve 😂, I enjoyed their relationship development, and the spice was just perfect.

The supporting characters are also an essential part of this story—my beautiful, strong, and perfect Sawyer, along with sweet Pia, Kohen, and Jocelyn. This book definitely wouldn’t be the same without them.

So, if you love a good and unique romantasy, full of new and thrilling adventures, you need to pick this one up.

Thank you, Liv, for the ARC and the amazing opportunity and experience of reading AKOSAS.

Tropes to expect:
🔺Unique Magic System
🔺Slow Burn
🔺Gods/Goddesses
🔺Enemies to Lovers
🔺Forced Proximity
🔺Fantasy Academia

I have enjoyed almost every ARC I have read this year. But a few make it to my list of my favorite reads all year. This book is one of them! In a world where the gods bestow gifts that turn chosen mortals into weapons of war, one girl receives the rarest power of all—marking her as both a savior and a threat. Trained to be a soldier, she falls for a prince caught on the edge of battle. As war threatens to consume the realms, she must embrace her destiny—and when the final moment comes, a goddess grants her the ultimate gift, changing everything. A gripping tale of divine power, sacrifice, and a love that defies fate.

⚔️Synopsis:
Maeve Willawood does not want to be one of the chosen for in her kingdom to be chosen means living your life for the king. Being chosen means being selected to carry a piece of the gods’ divine powers. However, Maeve soon learns the gods do not care what she wants and not only is she chosen but she is chosen by the rarest of the divinity’s powers. This comes not only with unwanted responsibilities and threats, but with a guard that stays by her side night and day. Maeve must learn to adapt in this new setting and figure out who she can trust.

⚔️Thoughts:
We love a chosen one trope! Maeve starts out reluctant and resentful for being chosen, but soon makes friends and adapts. Maeve and her guard, Sebastian are like oil and water. However, they soon find out they have some common enemies and common ground that help them bond. Poor Sebastian, our trauma boy, has so much healing to do, but Maeve and his group of friends and cousin, really help him through. I enjoyed Maeve’s character arc from the beginning of not wanting anything to do with her powers to working hard to figure them out. And that cliffhanger 😫😫 A phenomenal debut!! ✨🖤

I had the pleasure of reading Liv Webster's debut novel, A Kingdom of Salt and Stone (AKOSAS) and wow, I was blown away.

The story starts out with strong world building that I found to be interesting, and easy to follow. Main character Maeve's personality is alluring and magnetic, specifically pertaining to her strength and struggles with mental health, which I found to be a topic that Webster excelled in portraying, especially in the foundational chapters. Maeve's encounters with anxiety are portrayed in a balanced way that may be easier to understand for readers who have not experienced it themselves, while also being specific enough for those who have to relate. I also appreciated that while mental health was an underlying thread, it did not become too distracting from the well thought out plot. I found Webster's descriptive language to be strong and beautiful, and I could easily imagine the world she created in detail as I was reading. In addition, all the plot lines tied together nicely, and I didn't feel like there were any loose ends besides ideas that would be carried into book 2.

There were many times throughout this book where I didn't know what was going to happen next, which I really appreciate. The plot had dimension that made sense, and I felt I had a strong and clear understanding of the characters and the decisions they made, especially Sebastian and Maeve. I really loved Maeve's friendship with her best friend Pia, which was painted as a meaningful and loving female sister-like bond. I liked the dynamic of their friend group, and I am curious to see Kohen's potential character development more in book 2.

The ending left me wondering what would happen next, and I already can't wait for book 2!

ARC Review: A Kingdom of Salt and Stone by Liv Webster
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 (4/5, or 7.5-8/10)

Ok yall- this was an ARC read for me and I was super excited. It gives fantasy academia/war college. Maeve is bestowed a gift from the gods on her 21st birthday and she of course gets the rarest gems from the most aloof goddess. What are her powers? She doesn’t even know.

The opening scene was ✨chefs kiss✨ I was pulled in. And very worried about Maeve lol the story can drag on at some points BUT I feel like that’s on purpose to lay a lot of groundwork for the second novel and give us as much story as possible. It feels like you follow them day by day.

I wish we got more training or magic wielding scenes and more school scenes in general. But with an impending war I guess that’s hard to do lol

Super cool magic system, political turmoil, tension between friends and found family.

MY ONLY COMPLAINT: is the hot and cold back and forth between main characters. When we want them to band together, they start separating, when we need them to focus on battle- they’re having heartfelt convos 😮‍💨😂 I get the intention from the author. So this is just my pet peeve simply because I can’t relate to that dynamic.

Big representation on anxiety, panic attacks, self doubt, how childhood trauma shapes us as adults, and having to put others first in times of turmoil.

Overall a good read! Started quickly, a little slow in the middle, and then picked up at the end and I was sad when it was over.

•A true gem, I definitely recommend•

A Kingdom of Salt and Stone is the first book in the author’s Jewel-Light series, and it draws you right in to an epic tale with gods and goddesses, an ancient prophecy and unique magic. We meet Maeve Willawood, who is my favorite kind of FMC: spunky and smart, at first unwilling, and questioning of authority/ power systems. I formed an immediate connection with her due to the authentic way the author portrayed her managing her anxiety and her doubts about her self-worth.

Our MMC? Sebastian is complex, take-charge and just soft enough for Maeve to feel believable. He’s an easy 10 out of 10 book boyfriend, conflicted in his princely and military obligations but ready to burn down the world for his girl.

There are twists and turns throughout the book that keep you guessing- I really thought I had the storyline figured out, but I was totally off!!

And the ending? Let’s just say I will try not to hold my breath waiting for book 2.

Thank you IRIS Influencer Society and author Liv Webster for sending me a free copy of this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

Thank you Iris Influencer Society and Liv Webster for the eARC

Immersive. Emotional. Magical. Gritty. Unforgettable.

These 5 words truly sum up this story and how it made me feel.

This is a story that I will keep thinking about right up until I get my hands on book 2!
This is a great high fantasy, with all the ingredients for an epic story: magic, war, enemies, friendships, yearning, love and loss. I am so glad I got the chance to be an ARC reader, especially since this is definitely the type of book I love to read!

The magic system and world building were detailed without being overly complex making it easy to understand without having to constantly re-read. I was able to immerse myself and truly get lost in this world. I have to say Maeve seemed so relatable and the mental health representation struggle seemed to feel so real and that all her actions are well justified and just made me love and connect with her even more.

Very engaging story, plot twists, with a sprinkle of spice. I am so glad this will be a trilogy because I need more of this story and world!!!! I need book 2 immediately 😫!

5/5 ⭐️ Add this to your TBR today, you will not be disappointed!

A Kingdom of Salt and Stone is a fantasy romance set in a world where mortals can be blessed by one of 8 gods and receive a piece of that gods powers. Once a year, a celebration happens to reveal those who are blessed. During this celebration, our FMC Mauve notices a very swoon worthy soldier that she just can't keep her eyes off, and to her surprise, he has his eyes on her as well. But she has bigger things to worry about, like not being blessed. To her dismay, she is revealed as one of the blessed and must come forward to train and serve the kingdom.
Mauve, who has never wanted this for herself, finds that she is not only one of the blessed but also blessed by a god that has never in their history blessed another.
Now, she must leave her family to become a soldier and be guarded; as the kingdoms most valuable assets, by none other than the soldier she couldn't keep her eyes off. Although she can't stand our MMC Sebastian, there is an undeniable attraction between the two, yet both are too stubborn to admit it.
The slow burn of this book and the world building is some of the best I've ever read! You will not be able to put this book down as secrets unfold, attraction builds, and betrayals occur.

When I tried to put into words how this book made me feel, the only thing that came to mind was: seen. Yes, it’s a fantasy academia with a unique magic system where gods bestow powers upon those turning twenty-one—a far cry from my own age group 😅.

And yet, this debut 🤯 novel by the incredibly talented (and loveliest) Liv Webster managed to keep my deep-fried attention span hooked through 500+ pages of conflict, romance, politics, mental health struggles, and so much more.

The choice to give characters their powers on their twenty-first birthday struck me as a powerful allegory for adulthood: stepping into a world that demands everything from you, yet punishes you if you turn out to be too much. 🤦🏻‍♀️

If you’ve ever felt simultaneously “too much” and “not enough,” Maeve’s journey will resonate deeply. It’s thrilling, heartbreaking, surprising, and fulfilling—all at once—and this is only the beginning of her story.

Thank you so much, Liv, for trusting me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review! I can’t wait to see what you create next.

I was honored to receive an ARC copy of A Kingdom of Salt and Stone.

This book pleasantly surprised me! The world-building is thoughtful with enough detail to keep you engaged without ever feeling overwhelming, while still leaving you curious for more.

Maeve is a humble, kind heroine who never asked for the powers she’s given, and her struggles with anxiety and panic attacks made her feel very real. Sebastian is a sexy, book-smart MMC, though guarded from the violence and loss he’s endured. I loved seeing their characters grow together throughout the story.

The side characters: Pia, Kohen, and Sawyer, were fantastic additions, each bringing something unique. I especially hope to see more of Kohen’s character development in the next book.

The ending had a few moments of frustration (characters disagreeing when they needed to unite), but it also felt true to human nature. While there isn’t quite a third-act breakup, Maeve and Sebastian’s relationship hits some turbulence, and the cliffhanger definitely left me eager for the next book. That final plot twist was wild! In the best way!

Overall, this is a great fantasy read with engaging characters, a solid world, and just the right touch of spice. Definitely would recommend as your next fantasy read!

What a way to wrap up my September reads! This debut fantasy was such a fantastic story with a unique and intriguing magic system. I loved how each mortal received their powers and how the story developed from there.

The world-building pulled me in, and the characters were a huge highlight. Maeve was such a strong FMC, but what made her truly stand out was how she battled anxiety and wore her emotions so openly, it made her incredibly relatable. I also appreciated how vocal she was about not wanting the role she found herself in, which added to her authenticity. And then there’s Sebastian: broody, secretive, and carrying his own heavy trauma.

While the pacing slowed a bit in places and the relationship between the characters felt a little all over the place at times, overall, this was an excellent read. The cliffhanger ending has me eager to dive into the next book, and I can’t wait to see where this series goes next!

3.75 rounded up
thank you to this wonderful author for the arc!

quick premise
a kingdom of salt and stone is a fantasy world where mortals are gifted different divine powers from gods. we follow maeve who ends up being chosen, but soon she can't help but find the power as a burden. with gemstones imbued into her cheek, her power is far too dangerous. and as threats on her life strengthen, she's forced to be watched under a guard at all times. navigating through betrayals, political war, and her own personal struggles: maeve fiercely battles to protect what she loves.

quick thoughts
this was such a perfect mixture of world-building and character dynamics. everyone was likeable but also different in their own ways. i love me my found family moments, and despite the seriousness, this book was layered well in lighthearted fun scenes. the loyalty in the friend group bounced off very clearly, and although everyone had their own personal struggles, they all persevered and fought together.

also the way i tell you this was such a good mental health rep. maeve's severe anxiety in every scene of panic was spot on. not only was her mental health represented well, but the way other characters reacted was perfect and beyond supportive.

the only issue i had was the often disagreeing, hot n cold, and turbulent moments between a few characters. it did grow quite frustrating at some points, but at the same time it felt very needed, representing their personal battles even more.

read this if you want
- well balanced world-building. not super simple but not complex
- banter & fun moments
- amazing mental health rep
- found family
- a war college theme

Kingdom of Salt and Stone pulled me in with its mix of friendship, magic, and a heroine I could truly relate to.

✨ What I loved:
• A reluctant hero who feels authentic and layered (the kind of character you root for even when they stumble).
• The best-friend dynamics — heartfelt, loyal, and the kind of bonds that make fantasy stories shine.
• A fresh and unique take on magic that stood out from the usual tropes.
• An FMC who struggles with anxiety, written not as a weakness but as a real, human part of her strength. Major applause for this representation.

While a few pacing issues kept me from rating it a full 4 stars, I found myself invested in both the characters and the world. Fans of character-driven fantasy with strong emotional threads will definitely want to pick this one up.

5/5⭐️ Oh. My. Gods. This book. Where do I begin. A magic system I haven’t seen before. Kingdoms and asshole kings but a girl who doesn’t take shit from them. Obsessed. Enemies to lovers. Spicy. The twists. The plot, everything is so good. The writings reminds of me Rebecca Yarrows a lot and the twists too that we never see coming. The details in the writing to describe everything is immaculate. I love the banter and friendships with the characters how much they care about each other. The relationships remind me of some others I’ve read before but im obsessed with them and is more than great. Every time I picked up this book I was reading it for hours on end. Two pov’s im always a sucker for. I cannot wait for the next book to be out already. Im not sure what else to say, this book is everything I want in a romantasy and more.

This was a great read from debut author Liv Webster. Fast paced but with great world and character building. The very unique magic system is what sucked me in though. The slow burn was 🔥 The king is a dumb ass. 🤣 That poor crab though 😭 (iykyk)

Maeve Willawood doesn't want the massive life changing powers thrust upon her by the most powerful goddess of the realm. As the only mortal with these powers, her life is in danger from the evil neighboring army, and it's decided that her bodyguard/training mentor should be the highest ranking soldier, who is also non other than Crown Prince Sebastian. With traitors in their midst, who can be trusted to help them survive the battle at the castle? And the shocking cliffhanger that leads into book 2 was a total surprise. Totally did not see that coming but I'm here for it and ready for book 2!

I was invested from the first chapter, which is not always the case! We have our strong-willed FMC who we see cope with her anxiety and transform into a powerhouse throughout the book. The magic system is so unique and the story takes place in my favorite setting: an academy. We have forced proximity with a dark and mysterious, lethal bodyguard, who will protect his ward as fiercely as he would protect his romance novels (swoon!). And we have traitors in our midst who could put our FMC and the kingdom at great risk.

The book is such a vibe and I love the use of gods and gemstones. What I also really love is how flawed the main characters are, particularly our MMC. He’s a tortured soul, like many of our favorite MMCs, but we get to see him struggle with his internal demons and he reacts in ways that are withdrawn and panicked. He’s not always swoon-worthy, but he’s real, and I love that.

We have so much to learn in book 2 and I can’t wait!

Chapter 1 and I was so intrigued by the unique magic system! 💎 Gods, goddess, magic + jewels? YES, please! I couldn’t put it down.

The world building was rich, the descriptions made it so easy to feel like I was inside the story, it was perfect! 🤌🏻

Now, the characters…
I genuinely loveeeed them all, and I especially appreciated the mental health representation woven into the story 🥹
Maeve was a strong and relatable FMC, but Sebastian? Absolute perfection 🔥 He stole my heart!!

That said… a few scenes felt a bit repetitive (IMO), and the pacing was a little off at times 👀 But overall, this was such an enjoyable debut.. I can’t wait for the next one after that cliffhanger!!

P.S. Sawyer, I’m sooo looking at you! 👀🫣

With Love,
MnM ✨
