From Attorney Ryan, the most well-known workers’ rights lawyer in America, the complete guide to workers’ rights that your boss doesn’t want you to read
Life for working people is getting harder and more expensive. While employers clamp down with return-to-office mandates, productivity trackers, and layoffs, employees are struggling to keep up with daily expenses. Meanwhile, workers are expected to make huge sacrifices "for the good of the company." But what do they get in return? A surprise meeting with HR followed by a swift and unceremonious termination.
For too long, we’ve made do with the status quo. But workers deserve better. In Get It in Writing, Attorney Ryan Stygar, a former firefighter who became a workers' rights attorney and a valuable resource for the working class as a social media star, teaches you everything you need to know about how to get what you’re owed at work with practical, easy-to-understand advice. In plain English, he breaks down the answers to all your biggest questions around labor law,
“Does At Will employment really mean I have no rights?”“What do I do if my boss is bullying me?”“What if I’m too injured to keep working?”“Am I getting paid correctly?”“What if I report my creepy manager and no one believes me?” Most people are, understandably, afraid to deal with employment problems because their whole livelihood is at stake. But we can’t let bad bosses use fear to control us. Armed with Get It in Writing, you will have the tools to claim what’s rightfully yours—fair pay, fair treatment, and the time and accommodations you need when life goes off script. With Attorney Ryan's expertise, millions of working people are winning back what is rightfully theirs. It’s time for you to join them.
I follow AttorneyRyan on social media so I was excited when I saw he was writing a book. Did not disappoint, as he gives the basics of labor law in a digestible and entertaining format grounded by his backstory. In his 20s, author Ryan was a firefighter who didn’t know his rights when badgered, overworked and then ultimately injured at work: his failure to fight back in that job lit a fire to fight for others. The book drives the title advice “Get it in Writing” home with story after story about workers who were illegally fired or injured at work but failed to document harms or conversations. They often won their cases anyway but Ryan shows how much easier it may have been for them with recap emails or texts. He provides useful template emails to HR that are very direct and to the point.
Instead of commencement speakers and CEOs talking about, and even bragging about ai replacing workers, Ryan’s book is a great pivot to start talking about workers rights and regulations that match the times.
I highly recommend this book to everyone, especially to recent graduates, but really to all ages. HR and labor law has often been miscast as "dull" to keep people uninformed. No more!
I bought this book after appreciating a couple social media clips from @AttorneyRyan and I'm so glad I did. As one of my friends says, "If you don't know your rights, you don't have any rights." And this book is a good starting place. I especially appreciate the templates and examples. Ryan's conclusion sums it up for me: "...despite how central our jobs are to our lives, not once does anyone sit down with us and say, 'These are your rights at work. This is how to take care of yourself at work. This is how you fight back if someone comes for your livelihood.'"
This is a must-own and read for every worker in the USA. It explains your rights in an easy-to-read format and provides email templates throughout the book to help you assert them when you need to fight for them or apply for them.
I sure wish this book had existed in the past. Now that I've read it, I can reflect on all the mistakes I made. I now know how to fight for my rights and establish a paper trail if I end up in a bad situation again instead of quitting.
