In a new Western series, this author brings a very tantalizing tale of twins, Cale and Katherine Weston, or Kit. Their story is very poignant. The innocence of two children who lose everything in a natural catastrophe is lost once their ‘uncle’ takes them in. At first, they are in a loving home with their parents. They were not rich but had what they needed. A catastrophe made them orphans.
Their ‘Uncle Jesse’ and his wife, Sabrina, came to pick them up and take them from Texas to Oklahoma. Once there, they discover other children live there too. Promises that turn into nightmares from Sabrina make things so much rougher on Kit. All she wants and needs is the love of people who will take care of her. Cale sticks by her no matter what and always has her back.
When Sabrina finally takes things too far, Jesse steps in to put a stop to things. The story unfolds with first loves, betrayals, and learning skills no child ever should. The gang called the Silver Ghosts became notorious for robbing others. There is discord amongst the group. Two of the children, now teens, sew dissension within the close-knit group. They will show Jesse who is the true boss. After the face off, Kit loses her temper and unleashes on the only other female in the group.
Cale and Kit end up with their real Uncle Will. He is a Sheriff in Texas who has been waiting for them for years. He knows what they were exposed too but did not truly understand just how rough life had been. Kit cannot settle in. She is wandering and lost from the life they left behind. Here she is a teen and meets a snake. He immediately takes advantage of her. She does not see it. When another tragedy strikes, making Kit and Cale do the one thing they swore never would happen, Kit leaves without looking back.
The story line will end in a cliffhanger. But it gives us a glimpse of what to expect in book two. The world building of the characters is awesome. The book will keep you glued to the pages. Your heart will break for these two orphans that found a safe place too late. The betrayals will hit hard. I wanted to reach in the book and do something to several characters that took advantage of these two children. For the time and era, everything that occurred is definitely true to life. My heart is in tatters awaiting the next installment to see what transpires for everyone. Please get the next book out in a hurry!
