A somewhat transitional novel heavy on magic with very cool interludes and a great ending. Incognito in the capital Max has been working hard at gathering allies among the first born magical beings, but now the golden bruts started coming to life and demanding to associate with specific persons.
Unfortunately those are not who Max would have preferred and the association is fraught with dangers, so Max has to be there to help them whether they like it or not. And to complicate things, one of the new aurings to be is on trial for her life as her former patron went to the dark side and sent a shade to express her wishes, shade who murdered a few first born from Max entourage on the way...
While not yet in the open, the secret of Max's true parentage seems to be going where it was hinted and of course Carl, Chico, the dukes and the kings have their own plans, so the world is indeed hurling toward its breaking point.
Just great stuff and lots of fun and hopefully this one will get its audio release soon as that adds so much more to the enjoyment.

I feel swindled.
This is not a book. It is a small part of a book. It’s a slice of life novella at best. No conflict, climax, or closure. Just felt like a money grab that could have easily just waited and combined with the next one.
We will see if this irksome pattern continue.

Unfortunately the book was too short and longwinded to be really good. Most of the book was rather trivial and the plot gpot only interesting cowards the last 10% of the book..

Lost 2 stars for NOT writing a Recap.
I think every reader needs to start doing this to force authors to write a quick Recap chapter, which readers can skip if they remember, and those who don't won't stop reading the series.

A filler novel that drags in an otherwise great series.
This is only the second book in the series I’ve rated less than five stars. I will preface that five stars from me doesn’t mean “perfection” as such a thing doesn’t exist. To me, it means a novel in this genre hits all the marks even if not all the details. For me these marks are: world/magic building, progression, characters, combat, pacing/plot, and payoffs. Where I count off for this book is pacing and the fact this is a filler, which will never get a five star from me.
But before I get into my gripes, note I find this series does everything really well, most of the time. I’ve already put this series in my top five on my profile of favorite series. So, though this review may be mostly negative, assume everything I like about this series is implied.
One of my issues is that the longer this series goes, the more time is spent with other character perspectives to the point that in this novel we spend at least as much time, if not more, with those other perspectives than we do with the main character’s.
This wouldn’t be so bad if I didn’t feel like these interludes are giving away the plot a little too much. Whereas in earlier novels in this series the author would often gloss over events outside of the MCs direct perspective and let us piece together what happened from context, now it’s all being spelled out for us. All the players, what they are doing, how they are doing it, etc. And of course all this time spent on these other characters is what drags the actual pace of the plot in this book. A plot without any real overall arc. Meaning I see these interludes serve as a way for the author to pad the word count of a book without much plot movement, though it does develop the overall plot as most fillers do.
Essentially all that happens in the plot of this book is the MC makes an additional auring, trains the two he now has plus himself, then makes his “return” to the capital right at the end of the book. Everything else, including the interludes, is just set up. And I’m counting off a star for all that.
Other minor things that annoy me:
The author misuses the word “sentient” when he should use “sapient” judging from the context he uses the term.
The author uses “Hell” in this book twice spoken by characters not the MC, but there’s no such concept in their culture as it’s established they believe in reincarnation. This is a context error.
I’m also annoyed by all the women pining after the MC, and his “voluntary” celibate trope. I’m not sure if the author feels uncomfortable with writing romance or this the classic idealized author self-insert so common in this genre. You know the super handsome MC who women throw themselves at left and right but he’s just “above it all”? [Eyerolls]
There’s also some shakily patched plot holes. The first is that the lutine did not report his status as an auring to her master despite all the lore dumping around that relationship. But maybe we can believe that. What we can’t believe is that she wouldn’t tell her master that MC was secretly in the capital.
Another is that MC made it pretty clear in an earlier novel he wanted to marry for love, but this book he asks his aunt to find him a suitable match, duchess or better.
Additionally, he’s in the capital secretly for months and does not simply eliminate some of his enemies. He’s clearly the most powerful person in the kingdom. No one knows he’s there. I understand in the larger picture some of these men may be needed for their contributions to the war, but other than actual competent leaders, there’s always an heir and vassals to step up. So MC should have taken out the two dukes as they are more likely to hinder the war effort than facilitate it and the fact they are mortal threats to the people the MC cares about if not himself. There’s just no logical reason for MC to not have taken this opportunity to strike here. He wouldn’t be suspected. He could even just make them appear to have heart attacks. And it would be especially important now that we know these two dukes are gonna betray the kingdom. And that’s why this is a plot hole, because the author wants that betrayal to play out so he doesn’t have the MC do what would be logical for him to do.
But the biggest plot hole, that actually isn’t patched, in this series is his first born minions. He’s got hundreds at this point. The author has established they live practically everywhere in the capital, one for every building or patch of land perhaps. The MC also utilizes them to spy regularly. So why doesn’t the MC use them to spy on his enemies? Even if there’s some plot device for why they can’t listen in on conversations (and the only one in context so far is expensive and ancient wards that only the palace itself is mentioned as having), they could at least note comings and going, intercept letters, hear servant gossip, etc.
Now you may say, MCs shouldn’t always make the right decisions. And you’d be correct, that’s not a good way, even if it’s a common one, to write a dimensional MC. So perhaps then one could say the MC didn’t take out his enemies or even bother to spy on them with the tools easily available to him because that’s a mistake his character made. But this MC rarely, if ever, makes a consequential miscalculation or true mistake in this series, that’s one of my main gripes about this series alongside the fact that such a darkly toned series doesn’t kill off good guys. So I don’t believe MC ignoring these threats and the opportunity to cleanly eliminate them or even more safely simply spy on them is congruent with his character, as written, so far. I think his inaction contrasted with his practically godlike foresight makes this a blatant contradiction of his established character. One made primarily to facilitate a later plot so we can see the bumbling dukes get their due after once again bumbling.
In conclusion though, this book is still fun to me because it does the politics and the webs of intrigue and whatnot really well. It’s one of the best series in the genre in that manner, speaking for myself. The plot, the magic/world building, the combat, the payoffs also make this a great series, a top shelf series in my opinion. But it’s got some issues and I’m the kind of guy who points them out. 🤷🏼♂️

it is required
Like the majority of these books I’m of two minds. the story is an interesting one with well thought out characters in a cohesive world . I’ve been reading till this point because of such . Unfortunately there are some issues , it feels to me that this story is being purposely slowed down by adding unnecessary details , for almost 10$ a book I feel we should at least have a full story in each book.

yet another weak setup book full of unnecessary information, povs that drown out the plot and just increase the word count. the book feels like a webnovel that just dragged on and on without any substance. overall if you want to speed read the book just read the first and last 2 chapters, you wouldn't miss anything important.
worst thing of all is that it ends on a cliffhanger the book has just one big fight and that's about it. the editing wasn't that good and i found a few typos that broke the immersion. the last 2 or 3 books in this series are building up to a big fight and it hasn't finished yet, it seems! really disappointing.

Maximillan , Margrave de Valier is requested to attend King Carl in Herouxville, Carl doesn't know that Max has been there for some considerable time and not as everyone thinks in the "Shadow" as he increases his powers and those of his comrades , Carl still isn't sure if he can trust Max so the meeting is going to be fraught with intrigue and danger. The ending is brilliant , not quite a cliffhanger but sets the next book up nicely.

The winter demons are plotting and now they know there’s resistance in the capital capable of smiting the unwary, every king on the continent is about to enter into a war for dominance, and of course the nobles are plotting. Max has outwit, outmaneuver, and outlast all these plots if he wants to stop the apocalypse that’s slowly being created but it looks like help may be on the way…..great read with lots of set up fir the next book. Which I can’t wait to get!

Did not enjoy this one. Can't even remember much of what happened after I finished reading it...except the last four chapters were good. Felt like another filler book where nothing much happened. In fact the last two books have felt like someone packing a bag for travelling but never going on the trip.
I hope the crystal situation doesn't turn this book into a harem situation. I hate harem books.

Amazing Series!! 10/10
Bought every single 1 when it releases! Well worth it. The story is very captivating and the world building, magic system, and history stands out from the rest of the genre. The progression for each book raises the stakes on the world level. The political intrigue and game of thrones really adds another layer to the story!

Is one of my favorite authors, and I’m happy to pay for his books. That said, this one was a little disappointing. It just started to get interesting in the last 15% of the book. It really felt incomplete.

The book seems so short because there are hardly any action scenes. Most of it about various characters contemplating for a really long time. I really like the series in general but I hope the next book is better.

at this point this feel like a cashgrab, 30% of the book (if you can call it that) was a fight without even action just two different perspective, i dont see how came, the same problem it has the previous book, just word count filled book.

Max is at it again
I really enjoy this series, I wish they were a bit longer in length for the price we pay. I sincerely wish for the author to take this into account.

Great read with the traditional cliffhanger. Max is truly the Fox incarnate dodging enemies while growing in power. Excellent politics, which are a deadly game.
