Rate this book
Farm girl, Blanche Campbell marries Bill Amos and trades her Virginia farm life for the coal camp of West Virginia. What she finds in Warriormine is a world of unimaginable hardship—where coal dust covers everything, mine explosions claim neighbors without warning, and families survive on hope, faith, and fierce determination.
Through twenty-seven years of marriage, Blanche endures the Great Depression, labor strikes that leave the family without income, and the constant terror of sending her husband into the deadly mines each day. She raises ten children is a house without electricity or running water, washing coal—blackened clothes until her hands bleed, rationing every scrap of food, and praying each night that Bill will come home safely.
Set against the backdrop of real historical events—from the devasting Bartley Mine disaster to the labor battles that shaped American industry—The Coal Miner’s Wife tells the untold story of the women who held mining families together. Through Blanche’s eyes, we witness not just survival, but the triumph of love, community, and an unbreakable spirit that defined a generation.
This deeply moving novel illuminates a crucial chapter in American history, honoring the miners who powered our nation and the remarkable women who stood by them. It is a story of sacrifice and resilience that will resonate with anyone who has ever fought for their family’s future against impossible odds.

A testament to the strength of Appalachian women and the price of American prosperity.

C.S.Amos is the author of Coal Miner’s Wife. This heartfelt story depicts coal mining from a wife’s point of view.

Coal mining is one of the most dangerous jobs in the country. We’ve heard stories from coal miners but not many from their wives. Coal miners are brave men that endure physical dangers as well as long-term health issues. The wives are just as strong as these brave men.

Blanche is married to Bill, who has been a miner for years. She knew it would be difficult being a miner’s wife, but didn’t realize the intensity of the worrying. She prays daily that her husband will come home safely. The worrying is compounded with the war and economy in the 30’s and 40’s.

Blanche paints a picture of life at home awaiting the safe return of her husband. Since they work long hours, many chores are left to the wives. These chores along with raising children and keeping a home clean proves that the wives are as diligent as their husbands. She keeps a positive attitude while fear is always on her mind. Adapting to life is a must as she has to be strong for her family.

This book has many heartbreaking moments as you read about the struggles the family withstands. Having hope and faith is a must during these trials and tribulations. C.S. ensures that he depicts a true story of inner strength. I highly recommend this book!
