Hazel is a normal quiet, a bit on the nerdy side. Sure, nobody seems to notice her or even remember who she is, but that's nothing out of the ordinary, is it? Until the day Hazel starts to 'hear' the thoughts of the animals that reside on her mother's hobby farm and she begins to accept that hers is not exactly an ordinary life. Enter the mysterious Cynthia Moses and her band of uncanny (and adorable) orphans who are desperate to solve a mystery that has dire consequences for the children. The only way to protect these innocents is for Hazel to accept that some things can't be entirely explained by her current knowledge of science and reason. Even more difficult, she must accept her own extraordinary nature to survive a world that is both exquisite and brutal in order to save the orphans at Battlefield House.
The Orphans at Battlefield House was my introduction to the fae realm, and it completely drew me in. From the very first chapter, I felt an instant connection with Hazel. There was something about her curiosity and courage, but also that quiet otherness she carried the feeling of not quite fitting in with the typical crowd that really resonated with me.
I also loved the character Nest. Every character in this story had their own uniqueness, and together they made the world feel so alive and layered. The author did such a great job creating a story that’s both magical and emotional, the kind that lingers with you long after you finish reading.
I’m already excited to pick up the next book in the series and see where Hazel’s journey takes her next.
The Orphans at Battlefield House is a captivating story that blends mystery, fantasy, and emotion in a way that feels truly special. Hazel’s journey from an overlooked teenager to someone who embraces her extraordinary gift is inspiring and deeply moving. The connection she forms with the mysterious orphans and the secrets surrounding them kept me turning every page. The story explores courage, compassion, and the beauty of believing in what cannot always be explained. It’s both enchanting and powerful, leaving you with a sense of wonder long after the last page.
A magical and heartfelt adventure from the very first page. Hazel‘s journey from ordinary teen to discovering her extraordinary gifts is captivating and full of charm. The blend of mystery, fantasy, and emotion is beautifully done. A wonderful start to a series that feels both enchanting and unforgettable.
A great book and a great first in series. As the start of the series, it does a great job of establishing the characters, world and lore. As a story in itself, it is creative, interesting and easy to read.
