Set on the coastal plain of Cumberland in the mid-twentieth century, 'Fallout' follows on from 'A Good Liar' and 'Forgiven' as the final part of Ruth Sutton's fascinating trilogy 'Between the Mountains and the Sea'
The third of Ruth Sutton's books about Jessie Whelan, her family and loves, this time in 1957 set in West Cumbria against the backdrop of the Windscale nuclear leak.
So much to like here: I really appreciated the balance between characters and relationships [especially Jessie's with Lawrence Finer the nuclear physicist brought in to advise] on the one hand, and the well researched facts about what happened at the plant, with a mix of science and politics.
I also liked the fact that Jessie, ten years older than in the previous book, had changed somewhat [sadder somehow] and was still the feisty, independent woman we knew from A Good Liar and Forgiven. The last few chapters in particular brought us even closer to her.
Finally, the setting is still vital to the story, not only the nuclear plant but the fells too, as shown when Jessie takes Lawrence for a drive up Wasdale and John takes him for a walk up High Stile.
