Μελιτζάνες alla mafia
Στα έντεκα, ο Τζιοβάνι Μαντσόνι σύστησε την πρώτη του συμμορία· στα δώδεκα έβγαλε τα πρώτα του δολάρια· στα δεκατέσσερα συνελήφθη για πρώτη φορά και, μόλις ενηλικιώθηκε, εξέτισε την πρώτη ποινή φυλάκισης. Λίγο καιρό αφότου ολοκλήρωσε τις σπουδές του στην υπεξαίρεση χρημάτων, στον εκφοβισμό ανταγωνιστών, στην τοκογλυφία, στο λαθρεμπόριο και στις ένοπλες ληστείες, τον εξέλεξαν capo της φατρίας. Ύστερα από έναν πόλεμο συμμοριών, για να μη γεράσει πίσω από τα κάγκελα, μπήκε στο Πρόγραμμα Προστασίας Μαρτύρων. Έτσι, εξασφάλισε μια νέα ταυτότητα και ένα νέο σπιτικό στη Γαλλία, συντροφιά με την αγαπημένη του Μάγκι και τα παιδιά τους. Με οπλοστάσιο λοιπόν το παρελθόν του, είχε την έμπνευση να μεταφέρει τα κατορθώματά του σε βιβλίο.
Η Μάγκι έθαψε τη ζωή της ως σύζυγος μαφιόζου και αποφάσισε ότι είχε έρθει η ώρα να φτιάξει το δικό της παραμύθι... Ήξερε καλά πόσα πάθη είχαν ξεσηκώσει κατά καιρούς οι θεσπέσιες μελιτζάνες της με παρμεζάνα, πόσοι μαφιόζοι θα απαρνιόνταν ευχαρίστως τα ζυμαρικά της μαμάς τους για αυτό το πιάτο. Και τι δεν της έταζαν για να μάθουν το μυστικό της...
Έτσι, έστησε το μικρό εργαστήριο που διένεμε καθημερινά τριακόσιες μερίδες στη γύρω περιοχή. Κάθε πρωί, η παρμεζάνα έφτανε από μια μικρή βιοτεχνία στο Ρέτζιο Εμίλια και η μοτσαρέλα από το Λάτσιο. Σε βαζάκια ερχόταν από την Καλαβρία η αποφλοιωμένη ντομάτα και το ελαιόλαδο από έναν τοπικό παραγωγό. Η Μάγκι έφτιαχνε τη σάλτσα ντομάτας. Ο Ράφι έφερνε από τη λαχαναγορά τις καλύτερες μελιτζάνες και έβαζε την ποδιά του για να βοηθήσει. Η Κλάρα περνούσε κάθε ροδέλα στο τηγάνι, αφού πρώτα τη βουτούσε σ' ένα μείγμα από αβγά και αλεύρι. The sequel to Malavita, but unfortunately it isn't quite as good. Though there are still some very amusing episodes. The subplot I liked best stars Maggie, who's tired of being an ex-Mob wife. Everyone says she makes the best melanzane parmigiana they've ever tasted, and she decides to take them at their word and go commercial.
She starts a little take-away restaurant which caters to the lunch crowd. There is only one dish on the menu: melanzane parmigiana. Maggie buys nothing but the very best ingredients, and uses a recipe which she has honed over twenty years until it is absolutely perfect. They make the same number of portions every day, and when they're all gone, that's it. First come, first served.
Her operation is just opposite a big chain restaurant, and at first the manager smiles at her naiveté. How can she possible compete with him? But after a couple of months, he isn't smiling any more. Word of mouth has done its work, and Maggie is taking his business. His profit margin has disappeared, and his bosses want to know why.
He unsuccessfully tries to persuade Maggie to move, then resorts to dirty tricks. Her suppliers are suddenly unable to deliver the raw materials. The health and safety people start harassing her. After a few weeks of unequal combat, she's forced to close down her shop. Fred wants to know why she's so miserable, and in the end she tells him. He says she just has to leave it to him. He'll make her competitor wish he'd never been born. But Maggie is tired of Mob violence. No, Fred, she says. Don't do that. Just write in your next book about what you would do.
Fred kind of likes the idea, and really gets into it. He hardly even changes the names, and describes in detail exactly what he would have liked to do to the scummy manager, his business associates, and their families. On publication day, they deliver a dozen free copies to Maggie's former competitors. People read them and get sick with worry. A couple of weeks later, Maggie receives a phone call. It was all a huge misunderstanding. They'd be delighted if she started up her restaurant again. They'd help her and compensate her for the inconvenience she'd suffered. The pen, you see, is mightier than the sword.
I thought of this book earlier in the week, and decided to try my own hand at making melanzane parmigiana. Here's my recipe:
Melanzane parmigiana
2 large eggplant
3 medium onions
1 carrot
1 1/2 tins crushed tomatoes
1/2 tube tomato puree
100 g Parmesan cheese
4-5 cloves garlic
extra virgin olive oil
1 1/2 cups left-over wine
salt
black pepper
mild chili powder
paprika
basil
oregano
bay leaf
1. Cut the eggplant in 1 cm thick slices, place on kitchen roll, and sprinkle with salt. Turn over, and sprinkle with salt on the other side. Leave to stand for half an hour.
2. Set the oven to Gas Mark 6, or whatever your equivalent is. Grease two baking trays, and put the aubergine slices on them. Crush 2-3 cloves of garlic over them, and drizzle liberally with olive oil. Put in the oven for about an hour, or until they are golden brown. You should swap the trays around at half-time, to make sure that they get done equally.
3. Meanwhile, dice the onions and the carrots. Put some more olive oil in a large pan, turn on the heat, and crush in another couple of cloves of garlic. Sautee for a few seconds then put in the vegetables. Sprinkle on salt, pepper, mild chili powder and paprika. Stir around until they are soft and a nice brown color. The onions should be sticking just a bit.
4. Pour in the tomatoes and tomato puree. Sprinkle on basil and oregano, stir well, and add white wine. Toss in a bay leaf and allow to simmer gently for 20 minutes or so. Add more wine if it starts drying out too much.
5. Grate the Parmesan, and grease an ovenproof dish. When the eggplant and the tomato sauce are both ready, take the eggplant out of the oven, turning down the heat to Gas Mark 5. Layer the eggplant, sauce and cheese in the dish; I did a layer of sauce and cheese, a layer of eggplant, another layer of sauce and cheese, another layer of eggplant, and a final layer of sauce and cheese. Put back in the over for another 25 minutes.
6. While the melanzane is in the oven, make some tagliatelle and a salad, arranging things so that it will all be ready at the same time. Serve immediately.
I'm sure Maggie's was better, but hey, I've not been making melanzane parmigiana for 20 years and I'm not a former Mob wife. It was still delicious! I'll be doing this again.

Ce livre fut une grosse déception.
J'ai découvert le premier tome en film, et j'ai adoré l'histoire de cette famille rocambolesque incapable de rentrer dans le rang.
Quelle n'est pas ma surprise, en attaquant le deuxième livre, de découvrir cette prose médiocre qui n'a pu été débitée que par Fred lui-même. J'allais reporter la moitié du blâme sur le traducteur en découvrant le jeune couple qui se vouvoie, mais non, le français est bien la langue originale du texte.
Il aurait pu rester un bon roman de plage, mais l'histoire est elle aussi peu qualitative. Moi qui avait adoré l'énergie atomique du premier opus, j'ai été bien déçue des quelques lignes d'action parsemées ici et là dans une histoire molle, dont les scènes s'enchaînent brusquement, sans transition.
Sans grande surprise, la fin est aussi décevante que le reste. Certainement méritée mais sans aucun panache.

Λίγα πράγματα για αυτό το υπερ-βαρετό βιβλίο με σχεδόν παιδικό θέμα, αφελή ανάπτυξη και πρόχειρη πρόζα. Το βαρέθηκα, μου θύμισε ρομαντική κωμική τηλεταινία β' διαλογής (το straight to dvd σίκουελ) η δήθεν κινηματογραφική πρόζα ήταν αφήγηση της πλάκας ενώ οι χαρακτήρες στερεοτυπικοί, πρόχειροι και απλοϊκοί. Δεν μπορούσες να συνδεθείς με κανένα, ούτε καν να συμπαθήσεις κανένα. Μοναδικό καλό σημείο η διήγηση του Φρέντ στις 30 σελίδες στο τέλος. Κρίμα, θα μπορούσε να ήταν πολύ καλύτερο.

Maggie opened a cute little restaurant. And I think the gangster guy, her husband wrote a book with detailed descriptions of what he would do to her rivals instead of actually doing it for real and thus, she was left alone.
Aha! His son decided to become a mafiozi after all, after something happens with the love of his life?
And Belle had to become an undercover girl to help with an investigation. She also orchestrated her kidnapping in order for her beau to gain some confidance.
I think that's about it for the whole book. Do not remember anything else and even came to mind, was extremely difficult to remember. Not a bad book but not a good and memorable one either.

I bought this book after having watched The family, which I absolutely loved, but unfortunately it really disappointed me. This book doesn't contain all those fun side stories that made the movie so wonderful. Rather, it concentrates on the psychology of the characters, leaving very little space for the action. Even the dialogues are kept to the minimum, since it is often the writer that talks to the reader. The ending looks unnecessary at best, and unrealistic at worst.

J'ai retrouvé la plume légère et tellement drôle dans ce deuxième opus de malavita. Un plaisir de retrouver les 4 protagonistes du premier ouvrage avec leur petites habitudes. Malgré un début un peu long à se mettre en route , les 4 histoires parallèles de personnage qui ont grandi sont agréables à suivre. Il n'y a pas vraiment de cohésion générale à mon goût cependant , j'ai surtout apprécié l'ambiance , et l'humour :). La fin m'a un peu laissé sur sa fin

Quelques temps après la fin de Malavita, on retrouve les membres de la famille Blake (ou Wayne ou Manzoni, comme vous préférez) éparpillés un peu partout en France. Chacun poursuit ses rêves avec plus ou moins de succès. L'écriture de Tonino Benaquista se lit toujours aussi facilement, même si l'intrigue était moins prenante que dans le volume précédent.

C'était une lecture loisir amusante et j'ai aimé retrouver les personnages mais clairement pas au niveau du premier, il y a des maladresses, des incohérences, des longueurs.

Ganz nette Satire, sag ich mal, die mich vom Ton ein bisschen an Jonas Jonasson erinnerte. Ich muss sagen manchmal, glaube ich, fand sich das Buch lustiger, als es tatsächlich war und versuchte in jeder Situation die unvermeintliche Komik rauszukitzeln, (was im Gegensatz zu Jonas Jonasson bei Weitem nicht so oft gelingt oder auch nicht immer gut ist.)
Die Storyline ist nicht von all zu großem Belang scheint mir, es geht primär darum den American Lifestyle im Allgemeineb und den der Mafia insbesondere aufs zu nehmen. Das Buch hat jedoch auch einige gute Seiten, wie zum Beispiel die Sinnhaftigkeit des Lesens, die hier angesprochen wird. Das war sehr interessant aber wirkte teilweise irgendwie destruktiv, als wollte der Autor, dass der Leser aufhört zu lesen - oder eben doch nicht.
Zuletzt sei gesagt: Wer Jonas Jonasson mag , könnte dieses Buch gefallen. Wer Mafia mag, könnte dieses Buch gefallen. Ansonsten ist es kein MUSS.

Les Manzoni - Wayne cette fois-ci - sont de retour pour de nouvelles aventures ! Plus âgés, plus posés, avec de nouvelles questions et de nouvelles priorités chacun pour leurs vies respectives. Les personnages ont pris de la profondeur, les enfants, indépendants, se cherchent, pendant que les parents mènent leurs batailles au quotidien, Fred pour son 3ème livre, Maggie pour son restaurant.
Toujours aussi bien écrit, "Malavita Encore" prend le lecteur pour le laisser à la fin du livre, la tête pleine de questions existentielles et d'images de la mafia et du FBI.

très décevant comparé au premier tome.
celui ci est long,lourd,l'histoire se résine en longueur et manque de piquant.
tout le génie du premier tome y est absent.
j'ai lutté pour le finir et j'ai souvent du passer des pages de descriptions et élucubrations sans fin.

первая "Малавита" была восхитительным задорным чтением про раскаявшуюся мафию, трогательно неспособную найти способ жить без мафиозных штучек. Вторая "Малавита" оказалась довольно унылым чтивом о распаде семьи и какой-то дикой беспомощности.

Ravie de retrouver la famille Blake, maintenant Wayne, au fin fond de la Drôme... Toute la psychologie des personnages est mieux développée, un vrai bonheur !

Rare, mais la suite est meilleure que le premier tome. Les personnages sont mieux explorés, surtout ceux des enfants. On aurait repris un peu plus de Quint ;-)
