A rebellious nepo baby and an amphibious alien alpha end up becoming mates in this sexy romcom omegaverse where aliens have taken over Earth.
Beau Montgomery is an Omega stain on his father’s political career. Loriun Kolhn is a wealthy Alpha Mer in need of a mate. Ashford Montgomery is the swine who sold his son to the highest bidder.
When Beau’s father ships him off to the Mermade Islands, he expects to find himself in yet another gilded prison. He could have never predicted he might find love instead.
Where the Current Takes Him is a high heat MM alien mpreg romance. It errs on the side of romcom, but also deals with tougher issues with a dash of hurt/comfort and a guaranteed HEA.
Naia Moray is an omegaverse author who specializes in MM romance. She lives somewhere in Asia and spends most of her time holed up at home, writing, crocheting, drawing, or picking up yet another hobby. All of these things are done in a way that could be described as "feverishly." As a debut author, she is frankly thrilled to be receiving even a crumb of attention, so if you're reading this, thank you.
Thank you to the author Naia Moray for sending me a digital ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This normally not a genre I read, but I throughly enjoyed reading this.
Ultimately, Where the Current Takes Him is an emotionally resonant and beautifully written novel for readers who appreciate a character-driven story that moves with grace and purpose. It's an exploration of grief, healing, and finding oneself by surrendering to the inevitable flow of life.
This book will come out on September 22.
A huge thanks to Naia Moray for giving me the privilege to read the book before the book is official.
I finally am writing reviews for the arguably really good books I've read recently and I'm starting with this one because it was just released! I don't actually read a lot of omegaverse and even less mpreg, but this one just sounded kinda cute and I do *mumble* have a little thing for aquatic aliens *mumble*. So I wanted to read this one, and I enjoyed it quite a lot. It's a pretty low angst arranged marriage omegaverse between a rich alien alpha and a human omega.
Beau, the human, is struggling under his father's control as well as the declining health of his mother. His father, in an attempt to prove he totally fine (not) with the aliens coming over to hang on earth, basically sells beau off to the alien island to get married (yes I know the story of every Wattpad novel. However in this case I actually liked it haha it felt very familiar and also I'm just a huge sucker for arranged marriages so I was on board)
Loriun is our lonely Alpha, who is told Beau picked him out especially (poor guy). He wants a mate and is basically half in love with Beau before they even meet. Beau, to his credit adapts pretty quickly to the whole being sold off thing and begins to hope this will actually be good as it allows him to get away from his dad. Luckily for him he has Loriun waiting for him, ready to cater to his every need.
The relationship between Beau and Loriun is easy and sweet from the beginning, and I loved how nice and caring Loriun was for Beau. It was a really sweet and stress free read and I'll honestly be super excited for the other books in this series. I like the dynamics and the omegaverse elements didn't bother me.
Lourin’s absolute obliviousness to sarcasm and human jokes had be giggling. Especially when his mate Beau was full of snark and sarcasm.
Omegaverse is my go to comfort genre and this did not disappoint. I haven’t read too many Mer creature omegaverse and this was a lovely take on that. I enjoyed how they weren’t typical Mermen, they were aliens that happened to have mermen characteristics. Mermen adjacent.
The world building was excellent and I hope there is more lore shared in the next book.
A wonderful debut and if the setup at the end was any indication - I cannot wait for Grayson and Keld’s story.

I received an ARC of Where the Current Takes Him from the author, and I am leaving an honest review voluntarily.
I typically don't write reviews for romance novels, but I'm making an exception here.
This is Moray's debut, and with it being an Omegaverse, I tried my best to go in with no expectations. As an avid reader of ABO, monster/alien romance, RH, etc. I've read some really great romances, and some really poor ones. You cannot tell this is her first novel, nor her first ABO.
Moray has taken a helping of Omegaverse, a dash of aliens, and created something new, cozy, and addicting. She's successfully put a new spin on the genres while still making it seem familiar. It's absolutely refreshing!

Forget everything you think you know about typical omegaverse stories. Where the Current Leads is a genre-bending delight that combines the political intrigue of an alien occupation, the emotional turmoil of a family drama, and the tender, slow-burning heat of a truly romantic connection.
The heart of this novel is its incredible character work. Beau is far more than just a "rebellious nepo baby"; he's a complex character whose sharp wit and resilience hide a deep well of vulnerability. His journey to find his own worth, separate from his despicable father's ambitions, is powerfully written. And then there's Loriun, a commanding Alpha Mer whose authority is matched only by his capacity for patience, understanding, and a wonderfully dry understanding of human humor . Their relationship isn't just about fate or chemistry; it's a meeting of minds and a negotiation of cultures that is an absolute joy to read.
The world-building is seamless and clever, using the Mer's advanced technology and different social structures to hold a mirror to our own world's issues of prejudice and power. The supporting cast, especially Beau's fiercely loyal friends, adds rich layers of warmth and humor that prevent the darker themes from ever feeling overwhelming.
This book perfectly balances laugh-out-loud moments, nail-biting tension, and seriously steamy scenes. It’s a story about finding your chosen family, fighting for your happiness, and discovering that love can be the most powerful current of all. Utterly captivating from start to finish.
I don’t tend to read much romance and when I do, I’m on the picky side. I need strong characters and plot to enjoy a book. This book checked all my picky romance boxes. The characters are lovable (and for some, delightfully hate-able) and feel like they could be real people. Don’t ask me how she did it but somehow Naia Moray had me believing that if I visited Florida rn I might run into some sexy fish people haha That brings me to the element of the book that shines the most for me: the world-building. I don’t tend to get my hopes up much for world-building in romance novels, I gotta say. But as a reader I could feel that Moray had a clear vision of the world she was writing, from not only language vocabulary but also grammar??!! (My linguistics major heart was singing) and religion?? With a whole pantheon of gods and goddesses??! I just…I wanted to join in on Beau’s Loaish classes and I’m salty that it’s not actually real 🤣 This book is also funny. The humor helped me through the learning curve of reading my first omegaverse novel haha. Yup, this was my first rodeo and I think it was a good introduction to the genre. Although there are a lot of funny moments, the story also takes itself seriously. There are some heavy topics the characters have to face, such as toxic family members and losing loved ones. Moray was able to give those heavier subplots the nuance they deserved while also balancing them with levity in the rest of the story. This is a strong debut and I look forward to seeing what she’s got in store next!
What do you get when a mermaid alien and human fall inlove? You get Where the Current Takes Him.
This book was given to me as an advanced copy and all thoughts are mine own.
This was my first alien mermaid omegaverse romance book and it was surprisingly good. I wasn’t sure what to except when I received this book, but it was so good. I couldn’t put it down.
This book follows our two MMC Loriun and Beau. Loriun is our mer alien who is looking for an Omega. He meets Beau’s father and gets bamboozled by him. Beau’s father makes it seem like Beau is aware of the situation, which is the furthest thing from the truth. Beau is coerced into going to this new place where he will be the “companion” of Loriun.
Once the to two meet, they have an instant connection. Their relationships grows as the two discover how different each other is, but how that works perfectly for them. I loved watching their relation evolve, especially seeing how much Beau grows and transforms.
I will say, this was not what I was expecting at all. When I saw mpreg and omegaverse, I was a little skeptical. I really enjoyed this story and how the author used the omegaverse to their advantage with the mer-alien human couple.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This is not my usual genre and while aware of the Omegaverse, I've never read any before.
This book was a great introduction and a great debut.
The story was packed with character. Our alpha was everything we wanted him to be. Strong, protective, kind. While having a sweet obliviousness to sarcasm and a very literal mind which also made him so approachable and added a layer you rarely see in these types of male character that made him instantly loveable. Our Omega was his perfect foil. Despite the nepo baby description, Beau was charming, sweet, vulnerable, and a character that you just ached to see get good things.
Now sprinkle on top of those two darlings a villain I loved to hate (oh he made me fume, and Arlene can get yeeted into the sun too!), the entire cadre of Loriun's family, and my utter favourites Jamie and Vuos (I cannot wait to see their history explored).
After all of that, you still have plot that unravels at a lovely pace and yes, it's plot! This is not just a fish alien sexy book, it's story! And WORLD BUILDING! I adore lore, and there's plenty to go around (with more to uncover) all of which was done without overloading the page.
Where the Current Takes Him had me hooked from the very first page. Naia Moray’s debut novel was a wonderfully engaging story set in a unique, immersive world, and for a romcom that had me kraken up with laughter, it also delivered an unexpected amount of depth. (The puns write themselves…)
When Omega Beau Montgomery is “sold” by his manipulative father to Loriun Kolhn, a Mer Alpha, he’s thrown into the deep end of an alien culture. Together, Beau and Loriun must learn to navigate the waters of their murky new relationship…and it’s not all smooth sailing. (I know, I have a problem.)
Through clever use of allegory, the story explores themes like political extremism, gender identity and inequality, bodily autonomy and reproductive rights, all while maintaining a tone that’s light, playful, and thoroughly entertaining. The world-building and lore is meticulously crafted, and the main characters are layered and complex.
Where the Current Takes Him has o-fishally (last one, I swear) earned a 5 star rating from me. Fantastic debut!
I received an ARC from the author and I’m leaving a review voluntarily.

I went into Where the Current Takes Him having only read one other Omegaverse, and I was a little nervous but I didn't need to be! I absolutely loved this story, Naia did such great world building, it was easy to imagine and jump into and I really did love Loriun and Beau!
Loriun our Alpha Mer and Beau our sweet misunderstood baby Omega - things were not as they seemed for these two. Loriun was ready to settle down and Beau was being pushed into the meeting by his father for unknown reasons. Thankfully Beau met some amazing friends on his journey to Miami who would become chosen family and really stand up for him and help him to communicate and bond with his new Alpha.
I loved Loriun and Beau's connection and their heat, they learned how to communicate and found their accidental bonding to be only the beginning. They learned to accept each others cultural differences and that sometimes there will be more to your family than you knew, but that if you have each other you can find your way to build your own family.
Thank you to author Naia Moray for sending me a digital ARC epub of this book in exchange for an honest review.
If you love omegaverse, aliens, or mer-people, this is the book for you! This was such a good take on omegaverse and what could happen if alien mer-people existed and needed to find a new home on our planet! Honestly, I wouldn't mind it. 😂
Beau and Loriun might not have the greatest start, but the love and trust that develops between them is absolutely adorable. Even through all the obstacles thrown their way, they learn to fight together and be there for each other.
I can't wait to see more from, not only Beau and Loriun, but hopefully from others as well! I have a feeling a certain new Omega and a certain Alpha will find themselves together in the next book.
The second I saw the tropes for this book I knew that it was going to be my next read. This is my first time reading mpreg omegaverse merman smut but hopefully will not be my last. This merman comes with a knot, a mating bite AND a giant fish tail. Who says you can’t have it all?
Smut aside, this really is unbelievably cute. Our protagonists experience a few hiccups due to the rather unusual start to their relationship, but that certainly doesn’t stop them from grabbing their HEA with both hands. Beau hasn’t had the easiest life as an omega and Loriun does a wonderful job being the comforting and protective alpha that Beau needs.
The world building is solid and I loved the characters. I’ll definitely be picking up the next one.
This ARC was given to me as an exchange for my honest review.
This book was Moray's debut novel. It follows a mer-alien, Loriun, and an omega human, Beau. Set up by his spiteful father, Beau was suddenly thrown into the unknown world of the Mer-alien, expected to eventually mate and then produce children for Loriun.
Although I had no idea what to expect, I went in with an open mind, and I was pleasantly surprised! The world-building was fantastic, the characters intriguing. Loriun and Beau had great chemistry from the start. The story was pretty low-angst, though it glossed over some pretty heavy topics, which I wish the author had dove into a bit deeper. The ending was a bit rushed for me but it didn't take away from how much I enjoyed reading this book!
I’m not usually one for mpreg or aliens but this was too interesting not to sign up for.
Such a unique world and characters. You instantly fall in love with everyone (except a certain someone). The mpreg is actually pretty subtle honestly. I flew through this in a few days, couldn’t put it down.
Loriun is adorable. He takes everything literally and doesn’t get humor. But he tries for Beau and that’s all that matters. Beau is adorable and adapted so well to everything being thrown at him so quickly because of his ass of a father (didn’t see that plot twist coming about him!)
I received an ARC of this book from the author and am leaving an honest review voluntarily.
An adorable little romp of a romance between the sweet, long-suffering Beau and the too-serious-for-his-own-good hunk Loriun. The writing is fantastic, making me laugh at loud at times and keep staying up to read one more chapter. The world building is fascinating and feels like it's exactly what would happen if a hot alien species crash-landed into our planet. I really appreciated that there's no miscommunication as a plot point, because we're all so sick of that rip. Very steamy, very sweet, highly recommend
This story pulled me in right from the start. I loved Beau and Loriun. They really had no idea what they were doing and were just going with the flow, but that made them feel so real. I really enjoyed learning about the Mer culture and the detail that went into the world building was amazing. There was a fair amount of it, which you would expect from a story about alien merpeople inhabiting earth to couple with human omegas, but it was cleverly written into the story that it never felt overwhelming. It was sweet and funny, but then it was serious and then back to sweet, there was even a point where I gasped! But everything was so well balanced that this was a fun and leisurely read.
I received this book as a free ARC in exchange for an honest review. I’m not usually an omegaverse reader, but the characters, comedy, world-building, and love story sucked me right in. Even if some parts were predictable, I feel like that’s what I look for in romance books. Where the Current Takes Him is more plot-driven than other omegaverse novels I’ve seen, as they can often err on the side of pure smut 😂 I’d genuinely recommend this book, even if you don’t usually find yourself reading anything with the term “mpreg” on the cover 🫃🏽
This is like, exactly what I'm looking for when I pick up an omegaverse story. It's super sweet, a little spicy, and enough worldbuilding that we know the "why" behind this world. There's also a little bit of an added bonus of some background political maneuvering and family drama, though I don't feel like it ever took away from the main couple and how much they adored each other. Even with that going on, it really was a character driven story and I just adored Loriun and Beau so much and thought they were the perfect introduction to this new world! Excited for what comes next.
Where the current takes him is the first book of the Mermate Series.
Beau is an omega, the son of a politician, who lives on a planet Earth that is also home to aliens, Mer. They have colonized the seas and part of the Earth's surface and, in the process, have changed humanity, giving rise to omegas.
Because the Mer have low reproduction rates, a program is developed in which human omegas mate with the Mer.
I liked the universe the author created, and I look forward to the next book.
Im not a big omegaverse reader but it doesn't stop me from picking up a book if it sounds interesting. This book grabbed my attention & I really enjoyed it. It was different,in a good way then what i was expecting. It made me see the appeal in omegaverse books. I adored Beau and Loriun' s relationship, how they grew to love & trust each other. I'm suprised it was the authors debut book,it was written so well. I definitely will be putting my hand up for the next book in the series.
This was my very first omegaverse experience and I might be addicted now! This was such a sweet and low angst story - I loved every minute of Loriun and Beau's love story. Loriun is such a sweet partner and Beau is a very strong character especially after everything he has been through. I may or may not really want my own Alpha daddy now 😂
Thank you so much Naia Moray for allowing me to be on your ARC team it's been such an honor! I can't wait to read any of your future books 😁📚
This was so good. Loriun and Beau had such great chemistry. It was pretty low angst. Loriun was so good to Beau the whole way through. I can't wait for the next book in this series. I was surprised this was a debut. Will definitely continue to read this author.
I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.
Omegaverse is my go to comfort genre and this alien romcom did not disappoint.
The characters are complex and have more depth than I thought, when I read that it was a romcom. There are laugh out loud moments but there's so much more.
I love the world building and lore Naia has done here and I can't wait for the next story.
Thank you for the arc! This review is honest and voluntary.
This book was so delightful! The characters were very fun and realistic! If I had to pick a favorite element, it would be the story. Beau's journey was incredibly compelling! The Mer characters were all very interesting, and I can't wait to learn more about them!!
