HELP!: A psychological thriller of dangerous words

Rate this book
THEY ALL SAID THE SAME THING TO EMILY THANK YOU.
BEFORE THEY DIED.

When eight-year-old Covy James locked himself in a school bathroom with his father’s gun, Emily Donovan was the one on the other side of the door. The one who gave him the words he needed to hear.

Praised as the counselor who saved twenty-six children, Emily becomes the face of compassion. But behind the cameras lies a disturbing pattern. It soon draws the attention of investigative psychologist Grayson Lewis.

The deeper he digs, the more he begins to question whether Emily is a savior… or something far more dangerous.

Because sometimes, the most dangerous gift is giving people exactly what they ask for.

‼️ Check your Trigger Warning!!‼️

I finished this book a good 30 Mins ago and I am still trying to put my thoughts and emotions together. I have NEVER read a book that has left me feeling this way. I honestly have no words on how to explain how I feel! 😳
I literally felt Heartbreak, frustration, sympathy, anger, relief, and SHOCK! This book is the perfect example of how words can be taken so differently or deeply by others. HELP is such a gripping, Emotional & Powerful Story. It will leave you shaken up and probably give you a new insight to life!
I don’t want to give it away but HOLY COW the twist and the ending had my jaw on the floor! This is definitely a book you will think you figured it out but I promise you…. YOU WONT!

I can see how some people would like this book. However it was not for me. Please check your triggers, has a lot to with suicide/self harm. The verbiage was also confusing for me. It would probably be better for those in this line of work to understand. I guess I started the arc thinking it would be a different kind of thriller. I really appreciate the arc and I do like this author, but again, it wasn't what I thought it would be.

TW: suicide, please make sure to read the trigger warnings. I don’t have any, but some people do.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of this book. Emily Donovan the FMC was working for a school and an incident happened that put her on administrative leave. She ended up volunteering for a suicide hotline and helped a lot of people find comfort in their situations. She’s careful about the words she uses to help people. She also trains others on how to deal with such situations.

She finds herself in trouble after an incident happened with her helping someone. This book was great! I was able to finish it in no time because I couldn’t put it down! I would highly recommend reading this book.

After reading this book, I find myself somewhat conflicted in articulating my thoughts. While I appreciated the opportunity to read this as an ARC, I was ultimately left expecting more from the narrative.

The pacing of the book felt a bit drawn out, and I found myself anticipating a significant twist or reveal that never materialized. As a result, the story didn’t have the impact I had hoped for. That being said, one of the more intriguing aspects of the novel was the exploration of language and terminology used in crisis situations. I found this to be both insightful and memorable, and it’s something I’ll carry with me moving forward.

Overall, while the book held some interesting elements, it didn’t fully resonate with me, and I would classify it as a middle-of-the-road read.

Help by T.J. Roelyn
(Five emotionally scarred, slightly unhinged stars)

This book lives rent free in my mind.
No lease. No consent. No chance of moving on.

And before anyone misunderstands: Help is not funny.
It doesn’t try to be. It doesn’t soften the edges.
I bring the sarcasm because otherwise I’d have to lie down on the floor and stare at the ceiling for a few hours.

This story goes straight for the jugular of an uncomfortable truth:
What if someone helps you — but not in the way the world approves of?
Not loudly. Not heroically. Not wrapped in a socially acceptable bow labeled “This Is What Saving Looks Like.”
What if the help is quiet, complicated, morally messy… and still real?

That’s where this book hurts the most. Because it refuses to spoon-feed you the idea that there’s only one right way to save someone. Or that rescue has to look good from the outside to count.

Help understands something a lot of people don’t want to admit:
Giving up doesn’t automatically mean you’re weak. Sometimes it just means you’ve been carrying a weight that was never meant to be carried alone — and you’ve been doing it for far too long while everyone applauded your “strength.”

This book also tears into the lie we love telling struggling people:
“Stay alive for the people you’d leave behind.”
As if existing out of obligation is the same thing as living.
As if guilt is a sustainable life force.
Spoiler: it’s not.

What if what people are actually searching for isn’t rescue — but permission?
Permission to stop pretending.
Permission to say this hurts, this is too much, I can’t do this the way everyone expects me to.
What if being seen and believed is the help?

There are no comforting answers here. No inspirational pep talks. No magical turning point where everything suddenly makes sense. Just humans, doing the best and worst they can with what they have — and the devastating consequences of silence, misunderstanding, and good intentions colliding.

By the end, I wasn’t crying. I wasn’t healed.
I was quiet in that dangerous, thoughtful way where something has lodged itself deep inside you and refuses to leave.
This book doesn’t scream. It doesn’t beg.
It sits there. Waiting. Watching. Knowing you’ll think about it later at the worst possible moment.

Five emotionally scarred stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Because Help doesn’t try to save you.
It just refuses to look away — and somehow that’s worse. And better.

And from me, not the book:
If you’re carrying thoughts about ending your life, please don’t carry them alone. Find a safe place. A person. A moment where you can speak without being corrected or fixed. You deserve to be seen, not managed.
You are not weak. And you are not alone — even when your mind insists otherwise.

This book stays.
Like it or not.

Help – T.J. Roelyn
(Vijf emotioneel getraumatiseerde, lichtelijk gestoord sterren)

Vijf emotioneel getraumatiseerde sterren ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I couldn’t get into this book but wanted to finish it anyways, just in case. The story line was great but I did not enjoy the writing style at all. Some parts were hard to follow. The verbiage was confusing in a couple of parts. Most of it I followed fine. I just didn’t feel any suspense. I do think the whole point of this story was excellent. The psychological side of it was good. It did make me think a lot especially since with my husband’s career, suicide was too often. I do see a whole other side to those who consider suicide as a way out of pain for health reasons.
Definitely trigger warnings on this one.

Help! Is a psychological thriller about a teacher Emily Donovan, devoted to helping young people. She finds her life upended when 2 of her students and a local teenager die by suicide. Instead of sympathy, suspicion falls on her leading to an investigation and eventual arrest.

This is a gripping psychological thriller that explores tough themes like mental health, responsibility and blame. It is thought provoking, emotional and hard to put down. I highly recommend reading this book!

4.5 stars!!!! This book in one word, BRILLIANT! When you need help and/or advice.. do you want solutions for improvement or do you want someone in the trenches with you, allowing you to wallow in sorrow? Is there a right or wrong answer?? Definitely check your trigger warnings!! Reading this illicits a variety of emotions: anger, understanding, and questioning the need and want for justice. You may hate or love Emily... you have to read and find out which side you're on!

Overall, a really well written story. Would I personally classify it as a thriller? Not necessarily. It had enough mystery to keep me involved and it made a difference in my life as far as how the characters spoke. I would recommend anyone read it, although make sure you read the trigger warnings first. It’s a really good book just not as thriller like as I expected.

This was an intense read with fairly short chapters.
I read this book in 2 sittings.
I think the way you interpret this book depends a lot on you and your own mental health, and I think each persons thoughts will be different.
I was shocked by the ending of the book.
I think this book just shows how powerful words can be.

This was another great read from this author! I kept thinking I knew how the book would progress and how it would end. I was proven deliciously wrong. I honestly didn’t know what to expect with this one and it really makes you think. It kept me on the edge of my seat wondering where it would all end. As always read up on trigger warnings. I cannot wait for the next book T.J!

Another 5 star read from TJ Roelyn! This book gripped me from the start and kept me wondering “did she or didn’t she” through the whole book! Read the trigger warnings before you start this and then decide for yourself, is Emily Donovan the savior she projects to everyone or something far more sinister?

Verbiage was confusing to me. It was hard to feel present with the characters. I wish I understood Emily’s motives better. Also, quite repetitive without effect.
I liked the psychology and in-between the lines of the law vibe. I also liked the page of quotes, made the story heavier. This thriller may hit closer to home and touches the psyche more than typical thrillers. Suic!de content warning very important.

A different kind of psychological thriller. Yet one that I couldn’t put down! Taken through a roller coaster of emotions from heartbroken to captivated. With a twist towards the end that I did NOT see coming! Words are powerful as we learn it’s all about the perspective. Brilliantly written!

Definitely not what I expected. This book hits hard. I lost a friend to suicide when I was a teen. My youngest child lost a friend last year. Great book, but please read trigger warning.

Amazing book. Highly recommend.

This is a chilling, addictive thriller that blurs the line between savior and predator. With a premise that hooks instantly and twists that keep you guessing, this one will leave you questioning every motive until the final page!

I really liked this book. It was very thought provoking. It makes you wonder, did Emily "help" them make the decisions they made or did they make them themselves. I received ARC of this book for an honest review. I cannot wait for more books by this author.

This book was very well written and obviously a lot of research about counselling techniques, Maybe it was meant to be but it was an extremely’cold’ book devoid of emotion, found it a difficult read but also compelling, just thought in so many ways Emily was a psychopath.

Bad words

Just goes to show you you can't trust anyone. Emily knew exactly what to say to get what she wanted. A new kind of serial killer

WOW! This novel makes you really question the system of those that are unheard. Language is everything. This is one that will make you really question what you believe in.

Pleasantly unexpected

This wasn’t scary for me. It was cathartic. It forced a necessary conversation that could totally change how we treat others. Thanks for writing this.

Help! by T.J. Roelyn slams you into the dark, twisted world of a suicide hotline and refuses to let go. The main character’s motto? “I’ll be honest, not mean”—and trust me, that line cuts deeper than you expect. You won’t know if they’re a hero or a villain, good or evil, because they walk that razor-thin line like a pro, and it’s as unsettling as it is fascinating.

This book doesn’t mess around. It dives headfirst into pain and mental health with zero fluff or false hope. The characters are messy, complicated, and real—in all the best and worst ways. And here’s the kicker: this story will stick with you, haunting your thoughts long after you close the cover.

This book got 5 ⭐️from me because even though I thought it was a bit slow or repetitive at times, it has stayed with me and taken me 3 long weeks to be able to articulate my review of it. So if you want something dark, raw, and impossible to forget, Help! is your next must-read.

HELP! by T.J. Roelyn is a different kind of psychological thriller. I can see how this story can take two directions: it becomes a battle between love and hate.

Writing this review has been challenging, with so many emotions and careful word choices.
Usually, I write my reviews almost immediately after finishing a book, but this one is different—so far from ordinary. I needed a couple of days to process, analyse, and understand the deeper message that requires reading between the lines.

This book illustrates the power of words and highlights the understanding that sometimes giving up is not weakness but rather freedom. I believe the way this book is interpreted depends on your mental well-being, both current and past.

I connected with this book on a profound level; I felt it in my bones.

The story opens with an emotional and intense scene featuring teacher Emily Donovan in the bathroom, talking to a little boy named Covy, who has had enough. Soon, investigative psychologist Grayson Lewis discovers that there is more to the story than just Covy. While no one else can see it, Grayson recognises a pattern and is determined to dig deeper. But how deep is too deep?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4.5 → round up)
HOLY F***ING SHIT!!!
Okay, let me calm down for a second… but seriously, this book absolutely wrecked me. I’m giving it a solid 4.5 but rounding up to 5 stars because honestly? It deserves it.
The writing is so raw and powerful that it actually made me uncomfortable at times. There’s something about the way the author captures certain emotions and situations that feels almost too real, you know? Like they’ve been inside your head during your worst moments.
The only reason I’m not giving it a straight 5 is because this level of intensity isn’t for everyone. Some parts hit so hard that I had to put the book down and just… breathe. I keep thinking about scenes from it randomly throughout the day, which is both annoying and kind of amazing.
HELP! had me hooked from the start, but it’s the psychological stuff that really grabs you by the throat. There’s mystery and tension, just delivered in a way that gets under your skin instead of throwing twists at you every other page.
Just… maybe have some lighter reading ready for afterwards. Trust me on this one.

I liked the book and how it shown that just one phrase can hold double meaning for different people. Emily's character is complex in her eyes she provides peace in others eye's she gives permission. It follows Emily as she goes on a journey to help as many people as she can by providing them peace but others feel she's giving the ones she helped permission to let go. It's a really great book and makes you second guess if you are Team Emily or not. It shows that sometimes words that you say can be interpreted different than how you meant it to. I will recommend checking triggers as the book does mention suicide in it. But definitely check it out!

Yeah, I wrote this one. 😏

HELP! isn't a light read. It's about words, how we use them, and how the same thing can mean totally different things to different people.

Check the trigger warnings before you start. I mean it.

And of course 5 stars, but I'm the author so obviously I'm gonna say that. 😂
