While I was hoping to give this book more stars, I can't because of what happened to Essa in the middle of the book. *Spoiler* She is tied down to a slab, and taken/raped by 100 men in a "ritual" for the crown. That's so horrific, dehumanizing, disconcerting, and dangerous. Seriously, perhaps this is why no other Romantasy authors are men? I cannot conceive that a female would think of this situation, much less write it down!
As for the rest of the book: Charlie is alive, in a way; Kitty and Bo are more included in the tale; and the world expands to include an even bigger, evil empire with clones, goblins, wraiths... did I accidentally wander into D&D with this expansion?
This book, thankfully, doesn't have a major cliffhanger. The two lovers are together, even though war is all around them. I have to say that I'm glad that Book 4 isn't out yet, because with all that happened in this book, I need a break.

This book is SOOO GOOD, I really don't know how to start this review without screaming "YOU MUST READ THIS SERIES!!!"
This is the third installment of J.G. Gates epic fantasy series Dragons and Aces. (Check out my reviews of Book 1: Dragons and Aces & Book 2: Magick and Lead)
Charlie is ALIVE....sorta. As Magick and Lead closes, Charlie is trapped in a fire and Essa has to make the crushing decision to leave him. But Kitty, of course, can't let that happen and turns him into a vampire. He wakes up and fights the urges now coursing through his veins and makes plans to return to Maethelia...and Essa. Charlie makes it back to his family farm only to find the hangar, and the plane he was using, gone. Hearing Bo behind him, he is elated that he is still alive, but at a loss with no planes. Kitty arrives with information that she has uncovered that could reverse the vampire changing process, again igniting the fire in Charlie to get back to Maethelia.
Bo has a plan because he had stashed a couple of planes hidden in a ravine. Problem: only 1 pilot that can see. Through a couple of arguments, Bo and Kitty convince Charlie to allow Kitty to be Bo's eyes on a one-way flight across the sea to Maethelia. Once they land, they hide the planes and split up. Bo and Kitty to find the oracle that can reverse the vampire curse, and Charlie to Charcain.
Essa is distraught at leaving Charlie but has to return to her people and her kingdom. With a rag-tag of commoners and a few Skrathan, she vows to avenge her mother's death and return to Charcain to oust the traitors. Essa's fury blinds her and she leads her small army into an ambush and Essa commands Pocha to retreat with the survivors to find the oracle.
Essa ultimately get captured and begins the internal struggle to save her kingdom but hold those accountable to the destruction of the kingdom and death of her mother accountable. As she constructs and carries out her plan, Pocha and the survivors flee towards the oracle with the Grey Brothers and the golenae hot on their trail.
Bo and Kitty finally find the oracle, as does Pocha and the survivors, while Charlie makes it to Charcain with Parthar, who is no longer a small dragon. Prelate Kortai and his crew of traitors are closing the opportunities for Essa to be the true queen and set forth their ultimate plan of dominance. Essa ultimately is able to hold the traitorous nobles accountable and obtain a little respect for those traitors still yet standing. But she is unfortunately oblivious to the plans that have already been set forth long before she is to become Queen.
On the day of her coronation, there is no celebration because war breaks out. Unlikely support shows up and the battle ensues.
Whew!! A short summary, with soooo much more. I literally had a hard time putting it down. The pace of the action is fast as it follows multiple story-lines that converge at the end in an epic scene.
Definitely add this whole series to your TBR for the summer. Think of it as Pearl Harbor meets 4th Wing.
Book 2 left us as readers on a huge cliffhanger! Essa thinks Charlie is dead and goes back to her kingdom brokenhearted but ready to take up her place as queen. Charlie has been turned into a "vampyre" and is grappling to know what of his humanity is left and what he has to learn to adapt to. His love for Essa never falters. This books takes us through several POV"s of characters we know well, and some we know of but are know becoming key players. Charlie and Essa are navigating what their worlds look like without each other and their worlds at war with each other. Essa is being puppeted by her kingdoms' rules, and Charlie is being puppeted by the curse of a "vampyre". Essa is trying to figure out who to trust, other than her dragon Othura. Charlie trusts his dragon Parthar and his cousin Bo, but Kitty is sly... This books takes is full of a lot of political maneuvering, secrets, sorrow, and well...separation of companions. I sometimes can get an inclination of what's coming in a book. Catch a clue here and there. Nope. Not this book. (Which I love by the way. I love a read that keeps me saying What?!?") Theres a lot more side characters that get spotlight, and some new characters that may change the face of this political warfare. I was so excited for this book and boy it did not disappoint! I loved it. It had a more despairing tone than the other two books, but I feel like it is THE pivotal book in the series. Charlie and Essa... Good luck in book 4

Very frustrated by this book. Really enjoyed the first two but I just couldn’t continue after she was pretty much r*ped by 100 men. I want fantasy for escapism with kick-ass heroes. The FMC didn’t even bother trying to escape or save her dragon…then went through with that stupid violating ritual without any push back. Nesta/Aelin WOULD NEVER!
If you are going to make an MMC a vampire, the least you can do is make him a k1lling machine who saves her from being abused. He was pathetic at least for the first half I read. I kept thinking he’s going to save her because what type of fantasy book lets this happen to her…anyways I am fine to DNF.

Book 3 of a high action series involving dragons, flying aces witches and various other fantasy creatures that we adore. This book kept me on edge just like the first two books. I literally cannot get enough. Definitely has its plot twists, a little spicy spice and one heck of a cliffhanger cannot wait to get my hands on book 4.
This story is fantastic!! It just keeps getting better with each book. I can’t wait for the next installment of the series to find out if Charlie can find his cure, can they beat the prelate, what happens to the dragons.
I was really excited for this one as I loved books 1 & 2, but it fell a little flat for me. I am still excited to continue the series, though, as this one felt like it was all just preparation/setting up for book 4, which I feel like will be as exciting as the first 2 books were (hopefully).🙏
Felt like the writing went to pieces a bit with this book. The dialogue felt clunky and made me wince more than once. I didn't think the romance was well developed - again, very choppy and didn't flow well. Not my favourite.
This was a brilliant and thoughly fantastic book i have been lucky enough to read 1-3 and all of them in highly recommend and book 3 is no different absolutely incredible highly recommend x
