In this story we meet Ben and Franco. These two men are just looking for a place to "belong". As I expect from KC, we get an in depth look at not only our main characters but also our side characters. I was immersed in the story and quickly became invested in how these characters would pull together at the end. It's also a story of "found family" which is warm and "cuddly" and also one of my favorites.
I have ceased, long ago, to be amazed or surprised by K.C. Wells' talent when presenting a story. Now I just sit back and enjoy every single word. Her attention to the details is nothing short of amazing. I felt like I was in the kitchen of the restaurant absorbing all the wonderful delicacies being created. Of course, it wouldn’t be a K.C. Wells story without a little angst. She must have known that I hate it when my characters are hurt of feeling angry, so it didn't last long. However, it was heart wrenching to see and feel Ben and Franco's hearts shatter. But there are plenty of "sexy times" in the story, which KC really knows how to make happen. She really heats up the story with Ben and Franco.
I highly recommend this book or really, any of K.C. Well's books if you are a fan of M/M Romances. Read them all...you won't regret it.
DNF @ 52% - This was really… I don’t know… nice? But there wasn't enough to the characters’ backstories to carry the fact that there wasn't really anything going on here, including real relationship development. Anyway, I got to the halfway point and the MCs were having sex (spoiler? surely not) and all I could think about was whether or not they cleaned up the kitchen, to the point where I skimmed over the entire sex and following scene to find out… which told me this book was just not working for me.
I also love reading M/M romances set in Australia, but honestly, this could have been anywhere in the world (with the sole exception of one brief conversation about singing Wonderwall). I didn’t even get a feel for the neighbourhood the restaurant was in, let alone anything else about the setting.
After celebrations for clinching a multi million dollar deal leave Ben feeling empty, he decides it's time to leave the corporate world behind and find something that makes him feel alive instead of an empty shell. When trawling the internet that evening he notices a 'for sale' advert for a restaurant in Adelaide and decides there and then to go and take a look and immediately books a flight. He spends an evening there and although it seems chaotic, it seems to work. He makes a rash decision and puts in an offer to purchase it, which is accepted and he becomes the new owner.
The staff are a very random bunch, but each seem to have their place in making the chaos work and the customers seem to love eating there. The food is also delicious. As Ben sits there looking at his spreadsheets and trying to make things more organised, the staff are all trying to understand what makes him tick and get him to loosen up a bit. Operation Sunshine is born, with the key player being Franco who is the whirlwind waiter who tries to make everyone comfortable and happy. Ben immediately takes to him, but Francos flirting makes him worry that he's liking him a bit too much. As time goes on an the rainy days and evenings of winter keep the customers away, the pair begin to bond and Ben begins to feel more relaxed around the staff.
Then Franco drops a bombshell and while he's away Ben founds out the truth about Operation Sunshine which makes him question his choices. What will Franco find when he returns?
I really loved this book. It's a lighthearted, easy going romance where opposites definitely attract and both the MC's are protecting the walls they have built up and are afraid to trust and let others in. Overall, the restaurant seems a very happy and comfortable place to be and I loved the very different sub characters. It was very entertaining watching Franco weedle his way into Bens heart and vice versa and for Ben to finally find a family where he belonged and his HEA. 5 Stars from me.
This book shows again how versatile K.C. Wells is as an author. I read her for several years now and I often can't really anticipate in what direction a book goes.
Here we have a book which you would think just screams Grumpy/Sunshine from the blurb. The burn out guy (Ben) who uproots his life, buys a restaurant and falls for the funny, cheerful waiter (Franco).
But you soon discover that while the burn out guy is a grump with an unhealthy obsession with spreadsheets, the waiter is so much more than he portraits on the outside.
You get a tale of two men who are afraid of their walls crumbling, afraid of what will be when they open up and let themselves love someone. But when finally feelings become too strong to ignore, fate throws some curveballs and I love how they are helped by the merry band of restaurant staff to navigate and confront what others see to find their happy ever after.
There is plenty of chemistry between these two when they finally let loose and let themselves go vulnerable.
While Franco is the chaos gremlin, there is so much in this found family of restaurant workers who have all their faults, make mistakes but are also utterly loyal and devoted to each other and Ben. I love how slowly Ben is trusting, even when things go wrong and he finds himself hurt, these group is taking charge to help him and Franco.
I always enjoy KC Wells books and this is no exception. I felt for Ben, as he took the steps necessary to move away from his high powered job in the city, saving his mental health and taking ownership of a small restaurant. The unexpected bonus with this was the family that came with it. A group of random people who clearly care for each other and the place they work. The standout person, though, is Franco, with his open, sunshine personality and ease of getting under Ben's barriers. The reading pace is slightly chaotic, but that fits with Franco's character. I did find it a little hard as we flit between the MC's POVs throughout the chapters but then that kept you up with how each man was feeling in all scenes and settings. The joy Franco got out of getting to Ben, while Ben was feeling out of place and something akin to annoyance whilst also coming to crave how Franco made him feel. The restaurant and family is very much a work in progress, as is Ben and Franco together. Both men hurt/afraid of the possibility of something more and ending up hurt in the end. That leap of faith something that they are both struggling with, and it's an unexpected situation along with the help of their friends that get them to the place they need to be to get their HEA. An enjoyable read overall, and loved the moments of connection between Ben and Franco, especially once behind closed doors ... and maybe even the prep table 🙄 I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
Welcome to the restaurant Sage & Thyme and meet its new owner, Ben. He’s grumpy—but no, not really. He’s all about work—but no, not really. He left corporate life to be free, but now he is afraid to break out of his skin, to be who he really is. Meet Franco, resident chaos gremlin of Sage & Thyme. Sunshine personified, he’s the life of the party, gregarious, charming, and flirtatious—but no, not really. He’s hiding behind his sunshine mask. Also afraid to show his true self. Meet rest of the folks who work at Sage & Thyme. Fun-loving troublemakers who are the definition of found family. What starts out as fun for Franco and temptation for Ben becomes so much more, with the meddling of the found family of Sage & Thyme—cue Operation Sunshine—woven in for good measure. Two men afraid to trust, afraid to put themselves out there. Two men who want love so much, but are so afraid to lose it, they can’ t get out of their own way. Until one of them takes a chance, makes that leap. I love how honest the characters are with themselves, and there are some really well-written moments of self-inflection, moments between Ben and Franco, between them and their “family.” Despite my niggles with the lack of communication between the two MCs, I enjoyed this story and was very happy with the hard-won HEA that really did end in sunshine.
Operation Sunshine by K.C. Wells is about Ben, a corporate guy through and through, who realized that his life was empty and didn’t feel like a real person anymore. When Ben sees a restaurant for sale in Adelaide Australia and goes to check it out and likes it so much he buys it. Franco is a waiter and back up chef to this crazy little restaurant family . When Ben takes over the staff is worried he will corporatize the restaurant and put operation sunshine in place where Franco seduces Ben. But what the rest of the staff doesn’t know is that Franco was already falling for Ben when this started. What Ben sees in Franco is a facade to the happy crazy flirtatious man who worries about everyone else but also keeps everyone at a distance for fear of breaking his heart. Ben is used to strict ways of doing things but he finds through Franco that the little things matter, not numbers or spreadsheets but trust, love and realness of what they have together. I enjoyed this story of a grumpy corporate man becoming a wonderful warm person with the help of Franco and the rest of the staff who become his family.
This is a story about Ben Whitaker, a grumpy, control-focused businessman, and Franco Rossi, a chaotic, charming waiter, who find an unexpected romance after Ben moves to a new city for a fresh start. Ben moves to Adelaide to escape the corporate world and buys a neighbourhood restaurant, hoping for a quiet, orderly life. Instead, he gets Franco, a waiter who embodies pure chaos and believes in perfect love stories. Despite their complete opposite personalities—Ben living by rules, Franco by grand gestures—they share an instant, electric chemistry. Franco's lively presence and flirtatious gestures begin to melt Ben's carefully guarded heart.
I loved this story which explored whether Ben can risk his pride and control to embrace the chaotic love Franco offers, or if their differences will ultimately pull them apart. Franco was such fun and an outrageous flirt but there was a price to pay for that when he fell for Ben. A lot of feelings and emotions that were mostly between the two men but did pull in the rest of the restaurant staff. Easy to read, feel and understand. This was an MM story with mature content.
The restaurant employees came across more immature than endearing imo. They were definitely supposed to be chaotic, but the lack of any sort of positive qualities in them in addition to them just constantly making judgy comments about Ben made me dislike them. They felt less like a lovable, ragtag found family and more like a collective mess of off-putting personas.
The frequent POV swaps were distracting and impeded the pacing since every time it happened, we got some form of "Ben/Franco felt strongly + explanation" when it could've just been implied with through the other POV.
I had to DNF at that market chapter because there were literally TWELVE pov swaps in as many pages. I was already annoyed at the earlier parts of the book for doing 2-3 per chapter, but having one per page was way way waaayy too many. It literally added nothing to the story and would've been so much better if we'd stuck to one POV then just had the other character's debriefing thoughts in a separate chapter.
K.C. Wells has been on a roll! This is her seventh published book since mid-June 2025 and I’ve read all of them. I love books that touch on all of my emotions and Operation Sunshine did that so well. The last 25% or so I had tears running down my face – some happy, some sad – and that tells me how much I liked this book. It’s a little bit slow-burn with the sexy time not starting until about 35% but then watch out! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I’m not going to rehash the blurb, I just want to say that I thought this was a romantic story, even though the MCs didn’t always communicate really well. I’ve always known that KC is a very versatile author – she can write everything from sweet to blazing hot – and this story just reinforced that opinion.
This book spends a lot of time in the characters' heads. These guys put up some fortifications around their hearts, and those are the main conflict. If you don't like hearing internal dialogue about how hard it is to open up to others, this is not the book for you.
The other restaurant workers are quirky and fun. The restaurant is cute. Ben, despite not knowing anything about restaurants, is a good boss and has a good approach and good ideas.
Four stars because, even though we spend half the time in characters' heads, I don't feel like we get to know them very well. What was Ben's childhood like? Why are these guys estranged from their families? They don't have outside friends or hobbies.
Ben Whitaker is used to the corporate world, defined roles, facts, figures, his clinical Melbourne apartment, he has excelled in his career become the 'fortress' of the company, until he decides to take a risk for something more 'alive' in Adelaide.....
Enter Franco Rossi, the flirtatious, whirlwind and 'chaos gremlin' of Sage & Thyme. Both men have their own issues and walls they have both built to protect themselves, will they be able to come together and break them down to forge something 'real'?
Another one of KC's books I struggled to put down, good to see the spice levels creeping up again (and I'm not talking about an arrabbiata lol)
This story is full of emotions and will pull you in right from the start. Ben and Franco are from different worlds and when their worlds do collide the chaos begins. Ben and Franco are good together but it takes some time for the two to let each other in and show their vulnerabilities. I enjoyed seeing the two find their way and build a strong bond. Franco and Ben work hard for their happiness. This story moves along nicely and kept me engaged all the way to the end.
I usually like this author, but the way the perspective keeps jumping back and forth is confusing. I had to keep reading things over to figure out who was talking or thinking and it was too much.
DNFed at about the 12%. It started mildly interesting and devolved quickly into the main characters staring at each other with hearts in their eyes by the second meeting. The writing was excessively flowery, using very very very purple prose and the characters weren't engaging.
DNF at 20%. Just did not keep my attention. Ben is supposedly such a successful professional but can't handle talking to his small group of employees. Franco is way over the top and their trip to the market is bizarre. This was just not enjoyable.
This book shows how KC’s writing style is so adaptable across many styles, and it is one of my favourite reads to date. Ben was an amazing character, and I eagerly wait KC’s next novel!
I enjoyed this book from front to back. The characters merged beautifully and the writing was truly passionate. I can’t wait to read more from this author.
