Good actionable suggestions to build a network on LinkedIn. I wonder what other features have come up since 2013 🤔 definitely motivates me to give LinkedIn an honest try! See you on LinkedIn 😉 >> Dominique Longpré
I’ve had a LinkedIn account for a few years. I’d opened it, did the basics but didn’t see the value in it so didn’t do anything with it.
Then I read "I'm on LinkedIn -- Now What???" by Jason Alba in 2008 and got what it was all about. So I updated my profile and started working it. I have almost 500 connections now.
LinkedIn is a professional networking site ... think of it as your rolodex. But in addition to being connected to people you know (your first connections), you are connected to their connections (your second connections) and their connections (your third connections). It’s handy if you are looking for a job (chances are it will happened at some time) or trying to build your company. You can build your profile to include your employment history, education, volunteer activities, etc. Like Facebook, updates from your connections appear when you log in so you can see if your connections have changed jobs, added connections, posted links, etc.
This book goes through everything involved in having a LinkedIn account and how to best take advantage of it:
* Creating a powerful profile * Getting and giving recommendations * Adding applications to your profile (like videos, blog posts, etc.) * Ensuring you are using keywords so your profile will be found * Growing your network * Joining and creating groups * Participating in discussions * Jobhunting
This is an excellent book if you haven’t yet opened a LinkedIn account and why you should. Also if you have a LinkedIn account, it shows you how to use the powerful tools.
As a young business professional I found a lot of utility from this book. It gives a great overview of the networking capabilities of LinkedIn convincing the reader to engage right from the beginning. Guidance through the system is very helpful focusing on how to stay relevant through key phrases in your profile so that you come up in searches.
It begins with how to form an eloquent profile no matter what industry or content you are trying to present to potential clients, and associates. From there we explore networking, branding, and etiquette for formal interactions.
Useful reference material that will continually be used as profile develops and evolves.
A very good book for the LinkedIn noobs. However, as someone who has always been active on LinkedIn, I found very little value add in this.
Moreover, LinkedIn UI/UX and algorithms keep changing and this paperback might not be as useful or accurate in the current scenario. The author, however, made up for it by mentioning his website and links to subscribe to the latest updates.
Overall verdict - Good read for the ones looking to get started with LinkedIn!
This is a very good book for anyone who wants to learn how to get the most out of LinkedIn. I am not currently a very active user of the service, but that is about to change now that I have transitioned from being employed over 20 years at the same company to starting my own software company.
I thought I knew LinkedIn pretty well, but I have learned a lot from reading this book. I plan to put many of Dan's recommendations to good use.
While I found this book helpful in a few aspects that I had not thought of before, I thought a lot of it did not seem realistic and aimed largely at sales people trying to make those connections. While I do understand the benefits of connections even if you are not in sales, it still felt slightly schmoozy to me. Definitely some good tips, but there were also sections that I skipped.
Well organized and pretty useful for a beginner. Not necessarily impressive for someone who's already advanced in using LinkedIn. However it can remind you of all the ways you can use LinkedIn to boost your professional success and it can also give you some new ideas. Easy/fast read. I don't agree though with the author's approach regarding connecting people (strong focus on quantity).
I obviously won't ever use LinkedIn to the extreme the author suggests (his whole career is based around using LinkedIn), but I learned a lot of useful tips, and got a lot of ideas. In addition to specific LinkedIn skills, it is also a good reminded to keep your career eyes open, and to use your LinkedIn profile as a sort of living resume. That's reasonably good general advice.
Maximum Success with Linkedin by Dan Sherman is another winner. Most of my clients say I am on Linkedin but I can't use it - now they have a thorough and complete guide. I recommend Mazimum Success by Dan Sherman. Tracey Parnell, The 40 Year Old Snowbird
