The third book in the gripping ALL THE HIDDEN MONSTERS series - perfect for fans of Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instruments, with a touch of Rivers of London.
After an explosive argument with Oren, Sage finds herself alone in The Stone City. The supernatural capital, hidden behind the temples of Petra, is ancient, beautiful – and corrupt.
Sage must solve a string of murdered vampires, a werewolf’s natural enemy, to secure her place and keep her own deadly secret.
But will Oren, P and the rest of the team get there to help before >it’s too late?
Sage and Oren’s slow-burn romance finally delivers the heat readers have been craving in the third installment of Amie Jordan’s supernatural crime series.
OMG I totally loved this book!! I loved meeting Oren’s family and seeing where he came from. I loved the mystery that was unfolding alongside everything. Just some great moments with some great twists. Really enjoyed it!
I received a review copy from the publisher in preparation for a UKYASpotlight interview. It has not affected my opinions. ALL THE CURSED CREATURES is another great tale with complex character dynamics.
The book has a new setting, Stone City, Oren's ancestral home. It's opulent and historic - and pretty rotten with prejudice. It really helps explain where Oren is at the start of ALL THE HIDDEN MONSTERS and why Sage has had such difficulty with the Downside commander of the warlock investigators.
The story also takes advantage of this homecoming to dig into Oren's past. The series has never once tried to excuse what he's done, but instead lets you understand why. This is not how romantasy often approaches morally grey, complex anti-hero love interests but this is definitely my preferred way of handling it. Whether the heroine chooses that this background doesn't matter to her or not (like Sage has chosen), the reader shouldn't be told that they also have to make the same choice. ALL THE CURSED CREATURES, like the other books, lets you decide whether you agree with Sage's decision or not.
Unlike ALL THE LOST SOULS, which is split pretty evenly between Sage and Oren as narrators with P as a minor third narrator, this book is focused squarely on Sage. She has probably 70% of the chapters, with Oren narrating a few and P narrating only the opening two chapters. I did find this quite jarring after the previous book and I do wish we'd seen more of Oren (he doesn't speak until over a quarter of the way through). The book is focused on Sage but without seeing more of Oren's reactions, it feels bit unbalanced at times, particularly given the spotlight shone on his past.
The dedication states that Sage and P are the true love story of the series and this is made so clear by the ending. It's such a lovely, emotional end to this series - and I really appreciate that a friendship is shown as just as special and vital as a romantic relationship, if not more so.
I liked that the book ended without everything worked out. The mystery is, yes, but the future isn't - and the Elder Council have just handed out more injustice. It felt sadly more realistic to have this win-and-loss in one, but there is a thread of hope that Sage and Oren and P can find a way to set things right now they have time. There is a real sense that the world is going to continue beyond the series, which is a hallmark of well imagined world and characters.
Would give this book 3.5 stars if it was an option. I enjoyed and like the character development but it did have less of the mystery as previous books I felt. However I don’t think you would be able to get the mystery and character development into.
I’m someone who doesn’t really cry at books but this made me sob. Their found family is my favourite - I absolutely adore this series and I can’t believe this is the last instalment. A must read for anyone and everyone - truly one of my favourites
