First off if you think by the title this book is going to teach you how to write a Saturday night special quickly you are wrong. Instead this is a great resource for busy Pastors who want to get reacquainted with the basics of sermon prep. This book has practical advice in how to better prepare for your sermons so that when time comes for you to write your sermon, you are ready and have the resources necessary. Written as if from a person sitting in your pew, Caleb goes through what works for him and others and what distracts. This is definitely a great resource to have in your library. I will say one thing though, if you what a sort of cliff notes version read through the Appendixes as they tend to cover what is discussed in the chapter but just not in as much detail. Happy Reading!
If you are ever called on to speak in public-even if you are not a preacher-this book will help you attain clarity, purpose, and effectiveness in your remarks. All the better if you are a preacher! Caleb Breakey's Sermon Crunch provides seven pillars for preparing sermons-essentials that you may not know are essentials-that will take your preaching to the next level. In addition, Breakey offers a number of suggestions not directly related to sermon preparation but nevertheless important. He provides coaching on time management, a healthy lifestyle, and the importance of family. This is not a difficult book to read, and, while it takes some thought to implement the seven pillars, it will pay off in preparing and delivering sermons (or other addresses) that have great impact in the lives of those who are listening.
Great concepts in theory, but hard to put into practise.
It is ironic, the very steps the book leads you in making and evaluating a sermon (even though excellent), could be the reason for burn-out that the book warns against. We need to heed the parable of the shower, and know that not all will get it, no matter how well refined your sermon is.
This is a great book for new pastors. I really wish I had this book when I started pastoring. It is full of practical things a pastor can do to make writing sermons easier.
Recaps several key insights I gained from preaching class. I didn’t see anything new or refreshing in here that isn’t in other more well known books. Oh well.
There are many great books on sermon preparation and construction. This is helpful, but I recommend Wayne V. McDill's, Twelve Essential Skills for the Preparation of Sermons."
