As earthbound creatures surge into the Central Mercurial for the first time in an age, Tehran is caught between old responsibilities and his new reality. Haunted by Knox’s last plea for him to find the Sky, Tehran conceals his forsaken oaths in hopes his lies won’t become liabilities.
Emilia’s efforts to unravel enemy technology bring her face-to-face with the forces she is desperate to dismantle. Now truly alone, she must confront her demons and fight the monsters undermining the Order to avoid becoming their puppet.
Meanwhile, a world away, Knox awakes with new power pumping through his veins and fresh purpose driving him forward. Old bonds are loosed as he fights to reclaim the soul of the Reaches and find his way home to the child whose future is his to protect.
Some of Katee Stein’s earliest memories were of losing herself within the pages of a book. Through reading she first explored the world, and her favourite stories are still those that echo pieces of this world and urge her to be brave.
Her love of fiction continued as Katee grew, travelled, met the love of her life, had two amazing children, and started working in special education. Her debut novel, Glass Helix, was published by Stag Beetle Books in 2023. Her first indie offering, Earthbound, was released in 2024 with its sequel, Skysworn, following in 2025. With more projects in the works, Katee hopes to continue sharing stories long into the future.
Of course if you were to meet her, you’d find she’s of an ordinary sort who loves coffee and slow mornings, chickens and sunrises, and most of all, her people.
You know, I thought Earthbound was a wild emotional rollercoaster, but nothing could have prepared me for the twists and turns that Katee Stein had in store in Skysworn. This conclusion to the Of Earth and Sky duology has all the high stakes, tension, heartache, turmoil, consequences, and sacrifices that you’d want and expect from a good finale, and it’s just so incredibly satisfying in all its complicated and messy glory.
When I first read Earthbound, the Mercurial instantly became one of my favourite unique sci-fantasy world with its epic blend of science, technology, magic, and the divine, so I loved finally getting to return there and reuniting with my complicated babes Tehran, Emilia, and Knox. They are all trapped in a gut wrenching conflict that has shattered not just their hearts (and mine) but also their entire sense of self and reality, yet they are all fighting tooth and nail to save and protect their loved ones from the corruption that has taken root in their world, even if that means putting their own life on the line.
For me, Knox was still the absolute star of the show, and I loved seeing him trying to embrace his new reality as he grapples with his newfound divine powers and makes new enemies-turned-allies-turned-friends (or more?!). Tehran’s inner conflict also yet again gutted me in the best way possible, and I appreciated and admired how he continued to fight against the bad in this world all while being haunted by his own inner demons. Emilia’s storyline was probably the hardest to read for me, purely because she is stuck in such a frustrating position where she lacks any sense of agency for so long, but then the way that she came back with a vengeance in the final 25% of this book just had me cheering so loud.
See, at points I didn’t know if I wanted to hug or strangle these characters, but at the same time I just love how Stein writes these complex characters in such an honest and realistic way that their actions always feel refreshingly unpredictable in the most human way possible. And that skill is just taken to the next level in Skysworn as we get an additional POV from none other than the villain of the story, who I absolutely loved to hate as we see them manipulating and twisting the truth to create a narrative that suited their own narcissistic ends, all while justifying their own actions in their own mind in the most disturbing ways.
Fortunately, there’s also more than enough heart to balance out all the darkness, tragedy, and despair, and I found it so beautiful to see how the incredible power of hope, resistance, loyalty, faith, and love shines brighter than ever before. From the strong found family vibes (Kipp & Loghin have my heart), to the emotional development of both old and new romantic relationships (the tensionnnn!), and to the emotionally weighted (and relatively drama-free, we love to see it) reunions/confrontations between characters with the most complicated dynamics; the feels were just feeling real good.
Now, even though these characters all find themselves in quite a few action-packed life-or-death scenarios in Skysworn, this is not the type of story that you can just easily fly through as it’s much more ambitious and complex than it might seem on the surface. On the one hand, I loved delving even deeper into the characters and this incredibly imaginative world, yet on the other hand, I also can’t deny that things got overwhelming and almost a bit exhausting at times for me personally. There were just a few too many named characters with constantly shifting alliances to keep track of for me, and some of the big, revelatory moments left me slightly confused about the abilities and (lack of?) limitations of the powers of Sky and Earth.
Still, the emotional journeys of the core cast of characters mostly kept me grounded, and I love how Stein stuck the landing and wrapped things up in such a satisfying way in Skysworn, while also leaving some doors open for potential spin-off series about the compelling side characters stealing the show here (which I would be first in line for). The Of Earth and Sky duology is the epic romantic sci-fantasy I didn’t know I needed in my life, and I can’t recommend it highly enough to anyone who likes their escapist adventures with a whole lot of high stakes, heavy consequences, and a hell of a lot of heartache.
Thank you to the author for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. Skysworn is scheduled for release on 10 October, 2025.
What a wonderful conclusion. The romance in this story was full of angst and tension at times I wasn’t sure how I wanted it to all play out but I feel that Katee wrapped it up perfectly.
This story was action packed and the three protagonists were people I loved and rooted for from day one. This book gave us a villain POV and he was the WORST!!
I enjoyed the themes of transformation and trusting in a power greater than yourself. So much character growth in this one and I loved seeing them become more selfless and faithful.
The romance is beautiful!! Fighting for each other against all odds and learning when to hold on and when to let go. 10/10 recommend!

❣️Favorite Quotes: “He didn’t hold the Sky. She held him. He was not fighting alone then, and she certainly had not abandoned him now.”
“Do what is in your power, and leave the rest where it belongs.”
“If we end we end together.”
“…neither of them were the same people they’d once known. Some sorrows reforged marrow and bone.”
“He was nothing but a man. Everything extraordinary about him flowed from the power he tied himself to.”
Still staring at the wall after finishing Skysworn. Katee Stein delivers something incredibly unique with this duology and it works SO well. The cast shines, the action is gripping and visceral, the stakes are high, the baddies are BAD, and in Skysworn, she does an amazing job bringing complex character arcs home and wrapping up the story in a way that hits hard and is so satisfying. This is at the TOP of my reread list when it releases in October!!
I received an advance digital copy of this novel from the author. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
Skysworn is a fantastic followup to Earthbound, one of the most compelling and unique science-fantasies I’ve had the pleasure of reading. This completes the Of Earth and Sky duology, and gives readers the culmination of a story that is truly epic in every sense of the word. Both books are packed with compelling characters, brimming with depth and passion and their own kind of brokenness. This world is expansive and refreshingly original, beautifully fleshed-out in terms of worldbuilding. The plot is propulsive, the prose tight and crisp, and the romance believably messy.
The second installment picks up immediately where Earthbound left off. Because of this, and because of the twists and reveals toward the end of that first half of the duology, there’s not much I can say in terms of plot without giving anything away. Even mentioning characters by name could potentially spoil that first book, so I’m going to be as vague as possible in this review.
One thing Stein did that I absolutely love—and wish every SFF author would do when writing a series—is include a recap section at the beginning. This made diving back into that world when I didn’t have time to reread Earthbound beforehand so much easier and less confusing. As with Earthbound, one thread of the story is faster paced and more gripping than the others, though I was invested in all of these threads by the time they came together toward the end of the book. Speaking of endings, I would have never guessed this outcome when I started Earthbound, but it's just exactly right. I really appreciated how much time was spent on rebuilding after the final battle. Whether regarding relationships, hearts, or society as a whole, it was really satisfying to be given time to relish the victory and watch healing take place.
This duology is not Christian speculative fiction. Which gives the story a bit more leeway in terms of content: I would consider it fade-to-black in terms of spice, and there’s the lightest smattering of language. However, it is written from a Christian worldview, and the author's underpinning faith expressed itself in beautiful ways in this second installment, especially in the last quarter of the book. We see grudges and vendettas, but those are balanced by forgiveness and faith. In terms of themes, this installment delved into the pain and shame of addiction in really interesting ways, as well as embarking on a compelling exploration of faith amidst corruption. Though the duology goes to some very dark places, light and goodness manage to fight their way through.
I really enjoyed my time with the Of Earth and Sky duology. In my review of Earthbound, I compared Stein’s prose and character work and worldbuilding to that of Brandon Sanderson and, having now completed the story, I stand by that comparison. If you’re a fan of the the Cosmere, or the Broken Earth trilogy by N.K. Jemisin, or you just love epic stories that blend elements of science fiction and fantasy, I highly recommend Earthbound and Skysworn.
I'm in awe of how Stein can write something so utterly complex, messy, STRESSFUL . . . and leave me with a huge smile and a satisfied heart when I close the book.
This sequel delivers in every possible way. Well done. Well. Done.
Friends, if you’ve been around here for awhile you know just how obsessed I was with Earthbound and how stinkin’ excited I have been waiting for Skysworn! This was one of my top five most anticipated releases this year. Katee had her work cut out for her because Earthbound was so incredible I didn’t know if she could top it. Well I’m here to proclaim this story rocked! It far exceeded my expectations!
For those who think science-fiction/fantasy is not for them, try this duology. With a second world setup (think LotR), an order of overseers and elevated (think Jedi), earth-boring monsters (Dune), Luke and Hans bromance, complicated romance, and loads of action, this book has something for anyone who has ever enjoyed an alternate universe with a high stakes fight of good versus evil.
Katee has created a fantastic world, with complex and lovable heroes and heroines, friendships that stand the test of time, despicable villains, and swoon-worthy romance. What else could you ask for?
Skysworn was incredible! Please just go read it!
I want to give my most heartfelt thanks to Katee for, not only allowing to be on her launch team, but also for asking me to proofread it as well! My first time seeing my name in the acknowledgments. I am grateful and honored!!
Closed Door Romance * Fantasy * Sci-Fi * ARC Review * Katee Stein * Of Earth and Sky Duology
Wow. What a book. First let me say, I love the recap. So helpful and made jumping right back in to this world virtually seamless. The depth of these characters, the things they go through, Katee Stein makes you feel all of it. The tightening in my chest, the sinking of my heart, the hopeful blossoming. I’d recommend this book to lovers of fantasy and sci-fi alike.
There are aspects of the story that don’t totally sit right with me BUT I love that it’s not predictable or expected. I love that it’s complicated and messy and not all wrapped up with a fancy ribbon because that feels more real.
Skysworn is a satisfying conclusion to the Of Earth And Sky duology. And yet the world building and characters are so well done I want there to be more! If you like science fantasy, unique magic systems, devious villains, and both enemies to lovers and friends to lovers then this book is for you.
This was one of my most anticipated reads of the year and oh did it deliver 🥹. I always get really intimidated to write a review on a book that I loved so much. I’m afraid I won’t do it justice, or that my words will fail me, but this series blew me away and will forever have a place in my heart. Not only do I truly adore this author and the person she is, but her books have touched my soul. Her characters, the adversity they faced, and the hope and love they found along the way resonated with me on such a deep level. The pacing was spot on, the world building unique, and the writing was l fantastic! I cried a lot and not just sad tears, but happy too.
🌄Fantasy 🌄Book 2 in Duology 🌄Closed Door 🌄Mild Swearing (No F Words) 🌄CW: Violence & Death
After listening to the audiobook for Earthbound, I’d been eagerly waiting to read the second half of this duology, and Skysworn did not disappoint.
The sci-fi/fantasy setting was certainly interesting in the first book, but I was so excited to see it expanded upon in Skysworn. We get a closer look at the Mercurial’s capitol and its monolithic temples as well as the rustic mountains and forests of the Reaches. As usual, Katee Stein’s prose is absolutely beautiful, providing some fantastic imagery and vivid action scenes.
Speaking of action scenes, this book raised the bar even higher. The war between the Tumultians and the Avowed reaches a fever pitch, and we see an awesome balance between clashing technology and supernatural power. The casualties rack up, and I found myself on the edge of my seat, wondering who was going to survive until the very end.
As far as characters go, Knox was easily my favorite. In fact, you might even say he left a lasting Impression. (Wink, wink) Not just because he’s a stone-cold butt-kicker with a heart of gold, but also because he demonstrates how true strength comes from tenderness and mercy. I’ve always loved a good father-daughter style relationship in books, and his interactions with Kipp were a constant highlight for me. They were so adorable, and her innocence made a great foil for harshness of the world around them.
One of my favorite things about the book was the subtle nod to faith and Christianity. Vows have power, and the themes of forgiveness, loyalty, and enduring love were so well done. We’re also shown how darkness can sometimes corrupt those in authority, but it’s a relationship with the Divine that truly conquers all strife.
Despite my usual fixation with the bigger picture, I think the thing that gripped me most about the plot though, was the romantic dilemma that carried over from the first book. I had a sneaking suspicion how things would turn out (and they did, somewhat to my disappointment), but the messy, heartfelt way in which the situation resolved itself shows just how realistic the characters really were. I was still able to derive a happy ending and so glad that everyone gets their own form of closure.
Overall, Skysworn was an epic story with some good ol’ Brandon Sanderson flare. Needless to say, Katee Stein has established herself as one of my go-to authors.
I have lived a thousand lives in this duology, left heartbroken and harrowed, and above all wholly satisfied. Skysworn was the perfect ending for its nail biting origins. It’s unique, perspective shifting, and I am obsessed. So if you’re looking for a heart-pounding adventure, with the highest of stakes, a romantic subplot that will become your favorite rollercoaster in an epic world… this is your duology.
What to Expect: With Knox all but lost to the Sky, Tehrin battles his new found limitations. Emilia finds it difficult to forge a new path with her built up resentments, while Loghin and Kipp are left to their own defenses. The Mercurial braces for impact as enemies work to force the fate of the Sky’s people.
Plot: Just like a kintsugi master, she not only brought the shattered pieces of Earthbound back to shape but highlighted the severed places, making them shine in ways you didn’t think you’d see. As our characters drag themselves tooth and nail through the plot, earning every step they take, though things continue to burn around them, you start to unwind just what Stein is doing here.
World Building: We’re faced with new understanding and insight into our enemies beyond the Mercurial, and brought to great depths to see the lengths our enemy is willing to go. This book was a homecoming and yet had fresh new horizons. You don’t just read this book, you live it, and putting it away for the night feels like you’ve left something real behind. From crafts, weapons, tech and monsters, you’re met with the most wonderful surprises.
Magic System: The Sky’s hand grows leaps and bounds in this book, as our characters begin to explore its depths. And on the opposing side we learn so much more about the Tumiltian tech and the power that’s harnessed by it. I loved getting a better glimpse into the initiations, the powers earned by them and what’s lurking beneath the surface. There are beautiful parallels of truth within that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Characters: It was good to be back with Knox, Tehran and Emilia, with all that there is to face, right along with all our favorite side characters and a growing Kipp. I cried real tears and my heart soared within these pages a good few times. And, Sky help us, as the political tactics and deceptions unraveled, my skin started to crawl with how the villains were orchestrating things.
Writing: Stein’s storytelling isn’t one to miss. These characters are superb, in a surprising world with unbearable plot twists. All packaged in unassuming prose that lets you experience its elements undisturbed, giving you substance over fluff and impact in every line. And man did I highlight... basically everything. This is the kind of storytelling you come back to again and again.
Vibes: It feels fully epic, while being so digestible and sensory. You taste the churning earth in the air, your breath leaves you as you crash into the water, the wind whips your face as your vehicle speeds across the expanse. As soon as I started Skysworn and watched it unravel to its brilliant, chaotic crescendo I knew Katee had written a favorite series for me, and it could be for you too.
Wow! What a way to end this amazing story. Katee writes beautifully and I'm sad to say goodbye to the world she has created 🩷
Skysworn continues the amazingly heartbreaking and harrowing story of Knox, Tehran and Emilia, while introducing some other key characters and exploring their role in the battle to save Mercuria.
There were so many twists I didn't see coming. So a big thumbs up from me 👍 Politics, love, friendship, honour, pain, family, empathy - just so many aspects to this story and I loved it all.
I was 100% invested in these characters, including the new ones, which isn't any easy thing to do. Well done Katee for creating this amazing piece. And thank you for this ARC. Sorry I didn't get it finished before launch - had a few life hiccups these past months 🙃
I was so excited for this book, I read Earthbound this year and the cliffhanger at the end had me screaming so I had some expectations for this book and it did not disappoint!
The character growth was sensational and the twists and turns throughout the story had me picking up this book again and again. The love stories were perfect and satisfying and the only bad thing I have to say is that there wasn’t more!
I also love the deep spirituality this book had and the way I was able to relate my God to the god of this book. Katee made you feel what the characters felt and it had me crying more than once!
If you like fantasy books that are full of hope and redemption along with some epic battles and love stories this book is for you!
I’ve been counting down for the sequel to Earthbound!!! Katee, you did it again. Tomorrow’s release day can’t come soon enough. This book was an emotional rollercoaster of action, heartbreak, and connection. A flawless continuation of the series. Sometimes two books are all you need. And that ending? Still reeling from it. Every twist and turn was perfectly woven into the bigger story, integrating everything I loved about the first book with the high-stakes of this new landscape. One of my highly anticipated reads this year, and it was truly worth it.
I received an ARC copy, but all thoughts are my own.
Wow, where to begin? The sequel to Earthbound is not only amazing, but breathtaking in scale of action and tender moments.
Katee Stein delivers a compelling cast of characters set in a wonderful, easy-to-love world.
I enjoyed the multiple POV's and couldn't wait to "check back in" with the other characters.
Knox has to be my favourite character followed by Vesper. And of course Emilia and Tehran. Each were carefully was skillfully created unique. Every character remains memorable.
I honestly can't wait to reread the duology in paperback. I listened to the audio for Earthbound, and read the eBook for Skysworn. To hold this magic in my hands will be an experience in of its own. 🌅
What an epic ending to this duology! Great for adult readers of fantasy with detailed magic systems, high-tech gadgetry, and complicated character relationships.
Knox is my forever favorite, but both Tehran and Emilia were redeemed for me in this sequel to Earthbound. And the new characters all hit the mark.
If you loved the tension, action and honorable betrayals of book 1, you'll also enjoy the resolution and action of Skysworn!
Thank you to the author and BookSiren for the ARC. This review is all my own, and I hope it helps other readers like me!
If you're looking for an action packed book with depth and heart, 'Skysworn' is for you. Katee handles both so well.
The characters are given depth; they're fully fleshed out. Readers care for and ache for the characters' stakes, but if you're worried 'character driven' means you'll be rather bored, have no fear! This book will keep any reader who craves action very satisfied!
The finality. It’s over. Absolutely bloody good story. Picked up with a relentless pace and kept going till the end. This is one of those stories where the author leaves you wondering what is going to happen in the end for the characters that you have absolutely fallen for. In this story we find the true villain come to life and the struggle for power as they navigate a world where you are at once the most powerful person, but also the most desperate. We have our familiar characters navigating through their life and obligations, the vows and their oaths, sacrificing themselves for what they think is right. New relations are formed and the boundaries of sanity are pushed for the better of the mecurial and for the better of our characters Great job katee.
I loved it! While there is plenty of action, amazing characters to love and a beautiful world to get lost in I think the deeper themes are what really makes this book shine. I loved the exploration of oaths, intention, and agency, and I couldn't imagine a more satisfying ending to this duology.
I loved Earthbound, and Skysworn made me feel so many things! I even shouted them out loud while reading, which started my husband. Oops. But it’s such a great and wild ride and such a satisfying conclusion to this duology. Such a fan of this author!
If Earthbound broke my heart into pieces, Skysworn healed me.
The beginning was very political, without some of the romantic tension that propelled the plot in the last book. I personally felt a deeper connection to the second half of the book!
I do so love these characters. I will recommend this duology to many!
Wow…I thought Earthbound was an emotional roller coaster, but this book took it to a whole new level. With expanded world building, new characters, and the most heart wrenchingly satisfying arcs for book one favorites, Skysworn is hard to put down and will live in your heart and mind forever. THIS is how you write a sequel!
