From Nick Dragotta (East of West, Absolute Batman) and David Brothers (Time Waits) comes three tales that hit like a truck. Who will rule the roost in the post-apocalypse? Will the greatest boxer alive actually live up to his self-proclaimed legend? And just who will survive in America? Extra-length, Perfect Bound issue.
This collection of three short story comics feels like a love letter to bombastic Shonen manga from decades ago, the sort that would see its anime adaptations play on 2000-era Toonami; even when I was a kid that stuff seemed goofy and childish to me. Also not helping is the decision to print the raw art pages for the first story, jumping straight to a “behind-the-scenes artist’s edition” version from the start, except I don’t wanna see the rough art pages mocked up for some random story I don’t even really like, I wanna read a finished comic.
I’m generally a big fan of Dragotta’s professional work and there’s hints of that in his rougher art here, but overall it looks like this was drawn much quicker in his free time away from paid work.
So is this part of a bigger universe? Art was interesting but the stories were separate until they weren’t and then it was confusing when things came together. Not sure what was happening when I got to the end.
