Forest of the Mind: A heart-pounding domestic thriller you won't be able to stop reading

Rate this book
She just got engaged. Now she might lose everything—including her mind.

When a federal judge's fifteen-year-old daughter vanishes from a parking garage, FBI Agent Alexis Forrest is pulled from her engagement celebration into a nightmare that strikes too close to home.

The missing girl, Sarah Whitmore, was researching her mother's environmental crime cases when she uncovered a pattern linking dozens of powerful corporations to a decades-long conspiracy. One Reddit post later, she disappeared.

The note left on her abandoned car is "Some secrets are worth dying for."

As Alexis follows Sarah's digital trail from Hartford to Boston's elite academic circles, she uncovers a conspiracy that's been hiding in plain sight for decades. Someone has been using psychology as a weapon—manipulating witnesses, discrediting whistleblowers, and ensuring that powerful corporations never face justice.

And now they have Sarah.

With her forensic psychology PhD, Alexis is uniquely qualified to understand how a criminal mind works. But this adversary is different. He doesn't just think like her—he thinks about her. And he's been waiting.

Every day Sarah remains missing, the trail grows colder. And every day Alexis spends on the case, her fiancé Mitch grows more distant. He's watching the woman he loves disappear into her work again, and he's given her an ultimatum she can't ignore.

Because in this deadly game of cat and mouse, Alexis isn't just hunting a kidnapper. She's hunting someone who knows exactly how to break a mind—and he's already chosen his next victim.

From the bestselling author of the Alexis Forrest series comes a pulse-pounding psychological thriller about the thin line between justice and obsession, and the terrifying power of a mind that can make you doubt your own reality.

Perfect for fans of Lisa Gardner, Kendra Elliot, and Mary Stone.

FOREST OF THE MIND is the eight instalment in Kate Gable’s contemporary, adult ALEXIS FORREST: FBI MYSTERY THRILLER, focusing on FBI Special Agent Alexis Forrest. FOREST OF THE MIND can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines sis revealed where necessary.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from first person perspective ( Alexis Forrest) FOREST OF THE MIND follows the search for Sarah Whitmore, a missing fifteen year old girl whose mother is a well -respected federal judge. FBI Special Agent Alexis Forrest has been assigned to the case but upon Sarah’s rescue, and the ensuing legal investigation, the entire case begins to spiral out of control when more potential players are revealed, and another missing person needs to be found.

Meanwhile, Alexis’ relationship with her now fiancé Mitch is fracturing, and our heroine finds herself pulled in too many directions. Mitch is tired of taking second and often third position in Alexis’ life, and in this, our couple must come to a decision about their future going forward. Mitch continues to point out that Alexis is not the only FBI profiler but our heroine is unable to step back and watch someone else do the work.

The world building follows several intersecting pathways, all of which culminate in our heroine’s desperate need to uncover the truth. As the number of suspects and probabilities grow, Alexis is once again caught between doing everything alone, or with a team of people who know their job.

The secondary and supporting characters include Alexis’ long suffering boyfriend Mitch, SAC Temecula; Judge Patricia Whitmore, Sarah Whitmore, and several members of law enforcement. The requisite evil has many faces.

FOREST OF THE MIND is a story of secrets and lies, power and control, money and obsession, relationships and love. The character driven premise is edgy and dramatic; the romance is struggling; the characters are determined, desperate and energetic.

This is book eight in The Alexis Forrest FBI Mystery Thriller series. Alexis and Mitch have just got engaged when she gets a call that a judge’s daughter who is only fifteen is missing so now Alexis is going to Hartford to see what she can do because time is of the essence if they want to bring her home alive. When Alexis finds out that Sarah had found some links to a network they realised that could be why she was taken but will they find her in time or is it already too late. The leads are starting to run out and just when they think that they have exhausted everything they get the biggest lead ever but will they be able to bring the people involved to justice. Alexis now has many decisions that need to be made about her job but will they be the right ones, only time will tell. Wow this was a addictive and action packed story that kept you on the edge of your seat while keeping your attention throughout and I can’t wait to read the next book in this amazing series by Kate Gable who is a incredible author and writer and her books are definitely worth reading.

Is it picket fences, kids and puppy dogs or is it murders, kidnappers, and fraud.

This is a tough decision at a difficult time for Alexis. She loves Mitch and she always will but "Maybe loving me meant accepting that I'd always leave. That I'd always choose the case. That I'd always pick saving someone I'd never met over being present for him."

This is a very difficult case for her. A young teen subjected to "Every aspect of that environment was designed to destabilize her psychologically." Will she accept the fact that "You can't save everyone in your life, Agent Forrest. Sometimes you have to choose who you're going to save."

And when the cases are really difficult "Maybe sometimes the bad guys really did win. And maybe I'd have to learn to live with that."

If you like mysteries that leave you wondering about the next steps, you'll like this one. If you like that the mystery isn't over, but there is yet more to solve, details to wrap up and use them to expose the next steps in the solution - you'll like this one.

This is a challenging case for Alexis. She is overjoyed after just getting engaged to Mitch when she receives a call about a 15-year-old girl who has been kidnapped; her mother is a federal judge. This quickly becomes one of the most difficult cases Alexis has ever faced. Although Sarah, the young girl, is found, it doesn't feel like a resolution; instead, it feels like the beginning of a much larger investigation. The case is filled with twists and turns, leaving Alexis rarely at home. As a result, Mitch begins to have doubts. Is this the kind of life he wants, with Alexis constantly rushing off on a case every time the phone rings? Can Alexis be happy away from the job she loves if she wants to make their relationship work? Both Alexis and Mitch have a lot to consider once the case is concluded.

Brilliant page-turning book, I didn't want to put it down, I love the way this author writes, every book as exciting as the last, this one had lots of suspense and action.

Another fantastic addition to the FBI Agent Alexis Forrest series. From the very beginning you are hooked. This book has a few layers that keep you turning pages. Alexis is happy celebrating the fact that she and Mitch just got engaged. But, she gets a phone call that Sarah, a judges daughter has been kidnapped. It seemed Sarah discovered some information no one had seen in one of her mother's cases she was researching for a school project. This case becomes very convoluted and involved and seems to trigger something in Alexis. But to what end? Does Mitch want to take second place to Alexis' job? Will she constantly disappear every time there's a call. Will a marriage to Alexis work? Will she be able to make a choice between her job and marriage? This is an edge of your seat thriller that you just can't put down once you start. I received an ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

This is a difficult case for Alexis she’s happy having just got engaged to Mitch, when she gets a call. A 15 year old girl has been kidnapped and her mother is a federal judge. This turns into one of the most difficult cases Alexis has had. Sarah the young girl is found but it doesn’t feel like a solved case it feels like the beginning of one. There are so many twists and turns in this case that Alexis is never home. Mitch starts to have doubts, is this the sort of life he wants with Alexis running off on a case every time the phone rings. Can Alexis be happy away from the field job she loves if she wants to make this relationship work. Both Alexis and Mitch have a lot to think about once this case is over.

A very exhilarating psychological thriller that blew my mind. One of the best I’ve read so far. This book takes you into the mind of a very talented FBI agent Alexis Forrest, where loss, grief and trauma have been hunting her since her sister’s death two decades ago. She is now faced with choices that duel heavily on her: love ❤️ or career? Kate Gable is amazingly talented in writing these psychological thrillers. Her powerful characters, her descriptive writing of events and their chronological order, actions and reactions of all characters involved makes this book an addictive reading. I’m looking forward to reading more of her books and you will as well! A very recommended reading, 5 stars 🌟 !

FBI Agent Alexis Forest has been sent to look into the abduction of Sarah Whitmore, the daughter of Judge Patricia Whitmore. An exciting, edge-of-your-seat tale with lots of twists and turns that draws you in from the very beginning. If this isn't enough to keep the tension high, it is complicated by Alexis' personal relationship with Mitch. Alexis' constant obsession with her job is making Mitch question whether there really is a future for them....in a committed relationship.

Kate Gable never disappoints. Her stories grab you from the start and keep you engaged to the very last page, then leave you wanting for more. You can never go wrong with a book from this author.

This is a very troubling case for Alexis. She is newly engaged when she gets a call that a judge's daughter has been kidnapped. The longer she has to stay away, the more Mitch gets concerned that he might have made a mistake. With pressure in her personal and pressure to find Sarah, time is not on her side. With non stop action and unexpected twists, this story will keep you turning the pages. I received an advance copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving my review.

A judge's daughter is missing, and FBI Alexis Forrest is relentless in trying to find her. She just got engaged to Mitch and he is having difficulty with Alexis being away. The person who has the girl is known for mind control. He makes people doubt what they saw or read. This is a page turning thriller that I could not stop reading.

I received an ARC of Forest of The Mind and I am voluntarily leaving a review. I really enjoyed the fast paced feeling of solving this mystery. I do feel like the book could have been better if the car was solved at the end of the book not in the middle. it was interesting to read about a case being put together but it sort of slowed the book down once the mystery was solved.

A great psychological read! Alexis Forrest is a FBI agent and newly engaged. When she gets a call about a kidnapped girl, the daughter of a federal judge, she is rushing off. Leaving her fiancé to wonder if he is ready to sign up for this life.

Even when the kidnapped girl, Sarah, is found, the case is far from over. The twists and turns kept coming.

Forest of the Mind by Kate Gable is a shocking, engaging FBI thriller. Alexis is determined to find a young woman who was abducted, the daughter of a judge. This is her sole focus…pursued at the expense of everything else in her life.

I liked that we got various characters’ perspectives in this story…including some that I wasn’t expecting. Thrilling, heart-pounding, and gripping read!!!
