Kenya Wright wrote her first novel during her third year at UM Law school. She dropped out a month after the release and never looked back.

Words are power,
and Kenya wants to be the greatest wizard that ever lived.

It's an audacity to inspire
and teach the healing of love through arousal.

It's this crazy idea that love
can not only help a reader escape,
but the story can also teach the person
about being human,
while making them laugh,
cry,
and hot for more sex.

This is going to be a somewhat difficult review for me. I enjoyed NO ORDINARY LOVE, but something kept me from loving it and I can't quite put my finger on what that is. The story is decently written, however there are some editing hiccups that were small and not overly distracting. Nyomi's and Kenji's characters were mostly fleshed out but there didn't seem to be enough story around them for me.

Nyomi is young, she's only 21 years old, and at 16 wrote a best selling book that exposed her father's dirty dealings and lack of integrity. Her father resents the book that she wrote and they have a very contentious and destructive relationship. However, it's stated that the public and the press turned against her later on after having initially hailed her a successful and bright young author, but I never quite figured out why everything went south with her book. Nyomi's angst stems from her abandonment issues with her father and her stressful relationship with her mother. She is on a mission to prove that her initial success was not a fluke and that she can produce another ground breaking book. Choosing to write a book on the Japanese sex industry takes her to Japan to stay with a friend and ex lover to research this very closed world.

Kenji is a young Yakuza boss who has stepped into the role of leader after loosing half of his family to violence and his father's rapid decline in health. Kenji does have a conscious and as the second son he had a brief stint outside of the dark world built by his father. Kenji finds himself at a crossroads and believes that Nyomi is the key to helping him find his way out of the worst that his world has to offer. Kenji has is own demons to face that stem from his own father and the horrors that he exposed Kenji to at a young age.

I want to have empathy for Nyomi's character because she definitely feels the abandonment by her father deeply and her mother seems to be a weak parent to say the least. She's struggling to find her own identity and become a strong and successful person in her own right. However, there's just something that isn't allowing me to anchor to her like I expected. The lure of the dangerous and unpredictable is what attracts her to Kenji and the story starts off strong, it just lost me along the way as the story went on. There's quite a bit of inner dialogue throughout the story so maybe that was part of what kept me from enjoying the story as much as I would have liked. Things are resolved rather quickly between Nyomi and Kenji so there are no cliffhangers and you do get a complete story. It does need to be mentioned that there is a brief scene of breath play between Nyomi and Kenji as well as disturbing sex practices mentioned that Kenji and Nyomi do not participate in themselves.

The Dragon and his Tiger as she showed her claws almost till the very end of "No Ordinary Love

description

description

Sassy heroine, Nyomi wants the world to know that her first book wasn't a fluke and to prove it, she's writing on a subject that most wouldn't dare to research much less go to visit Tokyo to witness the culture of the underground sex industry! She and her male bff, "Zo without the e" have a way into the infamous business but not when the owner, Kenji Sato aka The Dragon sees the writer, Nyomi and says she's too beautiful and that it would caused major problems with his rich clientele in his establishment. Honestly Kenji expected the writer, Nyomi to be an average looking woman so he had no problem with her being given a tour but when he sees her he turns her away... but not without getting to handsy! Nyomi not having it (she's already paid the manager) and kneed The DRAGON... HARD! OMG... Kenji Sato is the leader of Tokyo's Yakuza and she "should be afraid, very AFRAID" but she not and he likes her fearless nature towards him... and names her Toro meaning Tiger! After all a tiger is just a kitty right... NOT when it comes to Nyomi!

description

What started as a blatant "NO!! from The Dragon even with their off the chart attraction leads to many compromises, erotic guided tours to the dark Red Light districts and the needed information for Nyomi to finish her book among other steamy sex scenes and dark discoveries about them both...

What I really enjoyed about this couple was that they learned that both their painful pasts connected them in more ways than one. Nyomi was no doormat to Kenji or to any man for that matter but she learned to let go of her hatred of her father while The Dragon learned to listen to his heart about many issues that his cruel father continue to divide in his Red District and that was not the legacy he needed to continue.

Although their story ended in a memorable HFN, I hope the KW gives them their well deserved HEA in another forthcoming book ... hint-hint since this book in a re-issue!

5++ extraordinary stars!!!!!

"I want you.” He raked his fingers through my damp curls. Adrenaline rushed through my veins like I was about to start a high-impact race. God, what had he done to me? This was wrong and dark, yet here I stood, getting turned on even more. He breathed me in and groaned. “I crave you bad, and not just sexually. I need more.”............... (Just one reason I love them)....

AN APB PERSPECTIVE REVIEW....
I am in Love with a Kenji.... aka Dragon

First let me say I am already a Kenya Wright Fan so this great read is not a surprise. Kenya is a visual writer and she did not disappoint in this book. I absolutely loved Kenji (the Dragon) and Nyomi (His Tora aka Tiger). He is a sexy complex Alpha and she is a hot complicated Vixen, both needing love and understanding. I love the voice of the characters (Kenji, Ny and Zo without an E) lol.. He was a riot by the way. Kenya always give more than what’s on the surface. The butter is in what’s not said. You will have to listen to what the character is really saying without the words. Kenji was a son trying to live to his mom expectations. You would think it was the Dad he was trying to please but it was not. He wanted to honor her by honoring him (the dad) and his Tiger was helping him to see how or at least question why he was doing that. Yes his Dad left an impact on his world but what had to be done could have been done sooner, he just needed the right motivation. Nyomi... lord she was a victim of her mom also. You thought it was the dad right, yes his actions ignited the way she saw love and relationships, but her mom’s behavior to them kept it burning all this time. She was reacting to the moms handling of all that he did. Her anger was merely redirected to him as she felt sorry for the mom and it was easier to hate him the parent who needed her less. (That is what I took from the story anyway). She saw Kenji as powerful and so was her dad and he had wielded that great hurt on her mom so maybe she would suffer the same fate. There were all sorts of oddities in this book but they all worked. Again Kenya’s talent of saying what’s not said. I loved the journey that each took to find their inner strength and the love that was so clearly there between them. The hot Sex was a bonus… (lmao)… The Dragon can Choke me and get my lacy any day… It is a fast pace book, moves from paragraph one so you will not be disappointed or bored… I absolutely loved it. Another Great job KW

Well worth the purchase

If you like a good plot, plus well developed characters, and hot steamy sex scenes between an Asian man and an African American woman then this book is for you.

I love reading Kenya Wright, her books always make me want another one. I like how alpha Kenji was and I like the fact Nyomi didn't back down from him just because he was a gangster.

So please pick up this title.

I started this book in September and finished it in January because it was quite horrid. I kept flipping back to the author because my brain refused to believe this book was written by Kenya Wright. I refuse to accept it.

For the sake of my sanity, I’ll keep this review short.

Heroine was weak willed, pathetic and a pain to read about. “Tora”, my ass! Insert the eye rolls here. She grated my nerves and was super selfish to her so called best friend because she got some D. His drugged up rant to her in the climax was SPOT ON. I was very disappointed that she was such a weak heroine. Kenya usually writes some strong female characters. Not physical strength, mind you, but mental strength. This one was (for someone who claim to just use men for their bodies) just immature and ridiculous. Loathe her.

The Dragon? *looks around* I have YET to see this Dragon everyone in the book keeps throwing around. Show him to me. If you read the book and you saw him, please help me to locate and identify him, because I missed him. Kenji was so P-A-T-H-E-T-I-C!! My gosh! He was supposed to be this dangerous, mysterious, pissing oneself when one was in his presence, fear inducing yakuza, but he came off as weak and no worse than your average pickpocket.

For someone born and raised in the yakuza and the rigidity of the traditional Japanese culture, it was NOT believable that he would:
A. Lose his control so completely to have sex with Nyomi in front of his men, no less
B. Risk the Japanese society and his men looking down on him to openly perform cunnilingus on Nyomi in a PUBLIC place such as the theatre!!!!

There’s just NO WAY he would risk having others, his men included, look down on his ESPECIALLY as a man in his position! Come on! All it did was make him look even more weak willed and pitying than I imagined him to be.

And what was with that climax? He did that his father, THE HEAD of one of the BIGGEST yakuza clans in Japan and… NOTHING? No revenge from loyal members? Members who were so loyal they still took orders from a man on his supposed death bed?! Nothing?! He just rides off into the sunset? Ugh!

Let me end my rant here because I did say this would be a short review. Book is bad, find another one of Kenya’s books to read. This one was absolute rubbish!

"You're a woman, one of the worst out there, because you're one that's hard to get out of my system. I can't sleep."

This book was absolutely no ordinary book.... it was extraordinary! The relationship between Kenji and Nyomi was all kinds of wrong but oh so right!

This was my first book by this author, but it will not be my last. I've provided feedback in my status updates, but just to reiterate; Nyomi knew how bad Kenji AKA the Dragon was for her, but she just couldn't stay away. And Kenji needed Nyomi AKA his Tora sort of as his conscience. She made him Human!!! And together.... they both learned a lot about love, forgiveness, family and matters of the heart!

I wanted to love this book

I really did.
I think it was Nyomi's character that keep put me from it. She annoyed me, her inability to actually think about anyone out side of herself was annoying, because she needed that rush she put her overly cautious friend Zo in jeopardy. In some ways I understand and get why she was the way that she was but... no. The plot was interesting enough and Kenji was great... zo and Nyomi... blah.

No, Just No

Me Weight is one of my favorite authors. This book is well written and the topic was fascinating, this then there stars instead of one. I just couldn't get into Nyomi. She was irritating as Hell. Her incessant game playing with Kenji really made this book difficult to read. She just ticked me off and I just didn't like the Character. Perhaps that was Me Wright's intent.
Anyway, I liked Kenji, but I have no interest in reading about them as a couple.

I REALLY didn’t like the fmc. Kenji’s story progressed more than Nyomi’s did. Her mother? Her father? Her childish behavior? Apologizing to a father who did you wrong? Zo pushing up on her, yuck… but also Kenji pushes up on her and she doesn’t mind. She’s the type of woman that will definitely get you in trouble.

Kenya Got Her Groove Back!

This book reminded me of why I started to read Kenya and why I feel in love with her all those years ago. I loved Kenji and Naomi story. The imagery and the metaphor between the Tiger and Dragon was well written.

I can’t wait to read what she puts our next.

Happy Reading!!!

Enjoyable

*****Spoilers*****

This book is, in a word...different. At times weird and others inexplicable, this one was certainly interesting. Kenji aka the Dragon and head of a Yakuza family sees Nyomi aka Tora, nickname via Kenji, is in Tokyo to research and uncover the underground sex scene for a book she wants to write. Nyomi in fact finds her way to one of Kenji's establishments for said research. Kenji comes on strong, so strong that my eyes popped at what he says and this is at first meet. He's too intense and wants what he wants but is a little too forward for her so Nyomi takes exception to Kenji's grabbiness and knees him where it'll hurt the most before taking off with her friend. The rest of the book is pursuit by Kenji, some resistance from Nyomi, and meddling by Kenji's father, past hurts for both of them, and getting to know one another. Since most of it takes place over a couple of weeks, it's sometimes hard to believe how deep Kenji in particular gets when it comes to disclosing certain information to Nyomi. There's also this awkward give and take between Kenji and Nyomi that I couldn't quite understand and that made the book feel out of sync at times. I did love Nyomi's friend Zo with no e, he was hilarious from beginning to end and added some color to the book that I appreciated.

But certainly, hot hot and hot some more. The chemistry this author is able to imbue into the pages of a story is always a five star effort I think. And whenever I'm looking for something unpredictable, I see what titles she has that I haven't read before settling in for a day to take a book in.

Grammar, spelling, and word use are detractors in the book. Inconsistency also makes the read less enjoyable and with this and the first being easily fixable with the use of a second read through or good editor makes it that much more frustrating I think.

I do like this author and go back for more because the books capture and hold the attention. Too, I can't pass up the steam when in the mood for an unexpected kind of love story on with bad boys when reading Kenya Wright.

This book was very strange lol. Kenji (mmc) is the son of the leader of the Japanese mafia (yakuza) but is basically in control since his father is sick and bedridden. Nyomi (fmc) is the publishing author that has come to Japan in hopes for a story about the Japanese sex industry. Kenji quickly becomes obsessed and possessive over Nyomi when she comes to his club to meet the owner, giving her access to information for her book. To be honest it was a bit too much and it made me so mad at times, he was OBSESSED. Nyomi was very wishywashy with her feelings and emotions, one second she likes it and is turned on by it all, the next second it’s too much. Like there was a literal flip from Kenji begging Nyomi to be with him and ending in Nyomi begging Kenji to be with her. The Dragon and the Tiger were both frustrating me lol. I wanted to love it more but I don’t feel like I connected deeply with any of the characters. Zo was a very aggravating side character, super judgy, and such a crybaby—honestly I didn’t like him. & I didn’t like Nyomi’s narcissistic mother. Also some of the stereotypical comments about Japanese culture that were made to be inappropriate which the author points out through the book kinda made me uncomfortable for some reason. There was only one major sex scene and a theatre scene (which by the way was very HOT 🥵) but I wish there were more! One other thing I can say about it that was a good addition to the story is knowing that both characters have horrible relationships with their fathers--it brought on a strong connection that helped them understand each other better since they could relate. Although the story did make me laugh and made me curious to keep reading, It was a bit underwhelming for me. this was my first book by Kenya Wright and was disappointed however I hope the next book I read by her is more enjoyable! 2.5/5⭐️

I FUCKING LOVE THIS! I'm so glad I bought it.
I read the entire book today as I just got it this morning. And I'm so satisfied. I love love love it. :3

Kenji is so dreamy...

Nyomi is so badass and hilarious

I loved the comic relief moments in the book and I love all the intense stuff happening too. I'm glad it wasn't too much about sex because I read some romance novels where it seems like the only thing happening in the book (or books) would be sex scenes and after a while that gets boring, so I love that you get to read about them connect on an emotional level as they talk and get to know one another more and then there's some steamy hot interaction between the two as well. This book was practically perfect. It wasn't too dark or sad or sappy or romantic, it wasn't too much of anything and it didn't lack anything either in my opinion. So this book and author deserves all the stars that are possible to give in this review. I want to add gifs to this review but so far I haven't figured out how to do that so I'm just giving my opinion like this.

LOVE THIS STORY!!! :3

Not my fav mrs Kenya

I really like most of Kenya Wright’s novels but this one just fell short. I remember reading this one before it got revised and i couldn’t make it past the sample. This one started off much better, however i could not connect with the characters. I REALLY disliked Nyomi. Although 21 is still young in age she was highly immature and annoying. The back and forth cat and mouse is not something i like to read in stories but this one nyomi snd kenji did had me rolling my eyes throughout. Nyomi also was a spoiled brat.she talked to her mom like shit for a reason i still have no clue or it was just minuscule i read passed it. I still feel like the main reason she was such a “free bird” and hated a father wasn’t explained. Why was he in jail? Did the relationship get mended? The book was never written and that was a recurring statement “I’m only here for my book, i did it for my book” but yet in the end there was no book. So many issues with this!! I gave 2 stars bc i really like Kenya as an artist and sex scenes were hot.

This was my first time reading a book by this author and I must say that I was pleasantly pleased.

Nyomi is struggling to create another best-selling novel, so she goes to Tokoyo to sleep on her best friend Zo without the e cot, while she goes to the red-light district to research the underground sex industry. She didn't know that she needed the approval of Kenji, the underground boss. After a chance encounter with Kenji, she is deemed is Tora, and a dark love affair begins.

The banter, dialogue between Nyomi and Kenji and Nyomi and Zo is different...its refreshing. You can't just pop this book open without having a clear mind. You have to understand the spoken and unspoken to fully understand the characters. This is a not a cookie-cutter romance. Nyomi and Kenji dance around each other for the length of the book before they finally give in completely to their feelings.

I really enjoyed this book and I recommend it.

As a Master Storyteller, Kenya Wright has proven time and time again that she has the "gift." Although this captivating tale of East meets West wasn't pitch perfect, I absolutely loved it. Because not only was it chock full of snappy dialogue, and pantymelting moments of sensuality, but it manages to draw the reader into an alternate universe where the world-building was absolutely incredible.

Giving this one: 4 fantastic stars

Not what I expected

I am not sure why I finished this book but I finished it just so I could write this review. This was not a good book at all. The heroine was annoying and very immature, so much to the point that I really really disliked her. The male lead was more endearing but he annoyed me at times as well. The bottom line is that this was not a very good book so I say don’t waste your time reading, pick something else.

What a thought provoking story!

Whoa! The Dragon (Kenji) and the Tora/Tiger (Nyoman) incredible romance. Hats off to Ms Kenya Wright for writing such a multi layered romance of two emotionally starved and broken people - damaged by their fathers treatment and behaviour towards them. If you like to read about complex, emotionally damaged people who makes you want to root for them then read this book.

LOVE IT!!!

KENJI!!!! Wow is all I have to say. These two are like fire together. It gets hotter and hotter. The banter between the two of them is comical. I love how they came to be. Both with the same issues coming together to heal what seems to be broken spirits. I hate it ended. A re-read for sure. I LOVED THIS STORY!

Can I just say right now that THIS BOOK RIGHT HERE, No Ordinary Love, put 50 shades of Grey to absolute SHAME! like this would actually make a fantastic movie. the scenery, the backdrop is all just so gothic, and glamorous. The dark underbelly of the sex industry and the organized crime are the darkly gothic aspects, yet the courtship and the whole city in Japan was enviable, and glittery. (I want that damned diamond dress like what? give that to me right now thankyou) the story of Kenji and Nyomi is infinitely more interesting as well as better written than anything that happened between the pages of 50 shades of Grey! I mean talk about control freak and a silly, danger courting chick that needed someone to drag her away!
I’m not a huge fan of BDSM books nor even the alpha male hero of the book since I generally don’t consider them heroes and I find the whole controlling dude thing scary as hell. so on that front, I’d say they were both crazy as hell and I want them both to be locked up LOL Kenji is absolutely screwed in the head and Nyomi just as much even more so. Her back and forthing was only half sane since the rest of the time she was just making me want to strangle her for real. Still I could see how their backgrounds could make two people with such tattered mentalities and that much I had to give to the author, Kenya Wright. Their chemistry was scorching hot and thoroughly believable. not once did I feel like I was reading an amateur sexy times novel. no frigging way! Kenya Moore has a gift. and its a very saucy one. I had to fan myself a couple of times in the book, and my eyes brows were raised in a very school marmish way for most of it. I’m pretty sure I clutched my pearls throughout the entire book. If you want steamy, complicated, messy, raunchy romance? then don’t bother looking at anyone else, Kenya Wright is definitely the one!
I nearly forget to thank the author for giving so much insight into Japanese culture that I didn’t have before including but not limited to the very private sex industry. WOW! what an eye opener.

I loved this book. I asked for a copy as I loved the synopsis and I wasn't disappointed. The story line was outstanding. Two cultures and two strong characters coming together, to over come pain and the darkness. There is humour within the story, but it is also quite Dark, just like I like it. There is passion and love, but I needed for detail. I wanted to be more in with the sex. You are in part, but for me I just wanted that little bit more...I'm greedy!!!, but this does not detract from a great story.
A Japanese culture coming together with an American culture....the dragon and the tiger, who dance around each other throughout the story. A writer and a mafia leader, an unlikely combination, yet it works. I like that you get into both of the characters heads, you see both their stories...it's great.

I would give 4.5 stars if I could give halves...I may even push to 5 after a good sleep. I enjoyed this x
