Dimitris Margetas has written something genuinely unusual — a novel that reads like a cocktail of dark crime fiction, social satire, and screwball comedy, all set against the glittering and often absurd world of Greek high society.
The story weaves together two seemingly unrelated threads across different timelines. On one side, we follow Iakovos (Jacob) Samarakis, a young investment professional navigating the treacherous social waters of Athens's elite — lavish Ekali parties, designer handbags, champagne politics, and a devastating confrontation with Maria, the wife of his company's president, whose rejected romantic confession sets off a chain of events with real consequences. On the other side, there's Angelos — a quiet, enigmatic bumper car operator at a traveling carnival who is far, far more than he appears. Angelos is a self-described "useful psychopath," a vigilante who dispenses justice where the law fails, and his storyline gradually converges with Iakovos's world in ways that are both surprising and satisfying.
Along the way, Margetas populates the book with unforgettable secondary characters — Betty, a spirited call girl whose cover story as a "manicurist" leads to one of the funniest police interrogation scenes I've read in years, and a trio of women in a holding cell whose banter crackles with energy. The dialogue throughout is the novel's greatest strength: witty, fast, and loaded with personality. Margetas clearly has an ear for how people actually talk — the verbal sparring between Iakovos and Maria in the opening chapter alone is worth the price of admission.
What sets this book apart is its tone. It never takes itself too seriously, yet the stakes feel real. The satire of wealthy Athenian social circles is affectionate but merciless — the obsession with brands, appearances, and social hierarchy is skewered with an insider's precision. At the same time, the thriller elements build steadily, and the final chapters in Miami deliver a genuinely chilling encounter that reframes everything that came before.
If there's a weakness, it's that the novel occasionally lingers a bit long on certain social scenes, and the large cast can be hard to track. But these are minor quibbles in a book that is, above all, a pleasure to read.
Recommended for fans of character-driven crime fiction with humor and social commentary — think a Greek cousin of Carl Hiaasen or Pedro Almodóvar's darker films. Even if you're reading it in translation, the voice and energy come through.

Το βιβλίο είναι ένα πολυεπίπεδο ψυχολογικό και κοινωνικό αφήγημα, που συνδυάζει ρομαντισμό, αγωνία και αίσθηση δικαιοσύνης, μέσα από τα μάτια ενός ιδιαίτερου ήρωα, του Άγγελου. Ο Άγγελος είναι ένας σύγχρονος «Ρομπέν των δασών» με ψυχοπαθητικές τάσεις, που χρησιμοποιεί την ικανότητά του να παρατηρεί, να αναλύει και να ελέγχει τους ανθρώπους γύρω του για να αποδώσει δικαιοσύνη εκεί που ο νόμος αδυνατεί ή καθυστερεί. The story whips between penthouse parties, grimy bars, and cold interrogation rooms without losing its footing, and the pacing never lets up long enough for you to get comfortable. Athens isn't just a backdrop here — it's a character, and Margetas uses the contrast between the city's glamour and its underbelly to keep the tension tight.
The cast is what makes it work. Iakovos is tangled up in corporate maneuvering, Betty is a complex figure operating in a world most authors would handle with zero nuance, Maria is wealthy and vengeful, Angelos is a millionaire who still punches a clock — and then there's the Dutchman. Every character carries moral weight without being reducible to a single trait, and the dialogue between them feels authentic rather than written.
The dark humor lands well and keeps the book from drowning in its own intensity. There's a balance between the suspense and the absurdity of these people's lives that gives the whole thing a propulsive, almost cinematic quality. You can see why it's being adapted for screen.

Παρόλο που δεν πρόκειται για το είδος λογοτεχνίας που συνήθως με εκφράζει, το βιβλίο αυτό με κέρδισε ως ένα καθαρά ψυχαγωγικό ανάγνωσμα.
Διαβάζεται εύκολα, έχει γρήγορη πλοκή και αξιοποιεί το χιούμορ, τη σάτιρα και την ειρωνεία με ευχάριστες υπερβολές, χωρίς να κουράζει.
Οι καταστάσεις και οι χαρακτήρες είναι προσαρμοσμένοι στην ελληνική πραγματικότητα, κάτι που κάνει την ανάγνωση ακόμα πιο οικεία και απολαυστική.
Δεν προσπαθεί να γίνει κάτι περισσότερο από αυτό που είναι — και ακριβώς γι’ αυτό πετυχαίνει τον στόχο του.
Για το κοινό στο οποίο απευθύνεται, είναι πραγματικά θαυμάσιο και προσφέρει δύο ώρες χαλαρής, ευχάριστης ψυχαγωγίας.
