Jehanne is at a turning point. As the curtain falls and the audience roars Jehanne locks eyes with the unknown man who’s followed her every performance for the past three years. For Jehanne, this man lights her fire, and her life. For him, Jehanne's scent is in his bones, he lusts for her soul, knows he is hers forever. Her familiar spirit tells her this is special so what can possibly go wrong? And at that very moment a voice in her head screams curses at her. Who is it? Has she found her soulmate, or met her death? Will dancing with a daemon dance her to her death … or save her life?
Dancing with a Daemon is 3-Peppers spicy, but there’s far more plot than spice, and a wicked twist open the heart. And there’s vampires, incubi, dragons and familiar spirits. This is magic how you always wanted to live it!
I write magic, mystery, murder & (sometimes steamy) romance.
All my life I’ve followed the deer trods of Elen of the Ways. My mother's mother was a witch from the Isle of Man and my father was a cunning man from Lancashire. I grew up in an ancient village on the edge of Exmoor where the church is dedicated to the goddess Iwerydd and my aunt owned her sacred well. My parents and the elder folk in the village taught the ways of the awenydd, the old native shamanism of Britain.
I live in the back of beyond with two cats and a host of wildlife where I write novels and I teach the ways of old ways of the awenydd that I grew up with. I read massively and am now converted to Kindle as well as having bookcases full of the lovely old paper stuff. Whenever I can I get out into the wild places.
Dancing with a Daemon by Elen Sentier is a short novel that leaves one with the distinct feeling that it should have been much longer. In fact, I found myself pausing often. Not because I lost interest, but because I was compelled to dig deeper. Each reference to faeries, witches, and folklore sent me on side journeys of research, eager to better understand the tapestry Sentier was weaving. The immersion was so complete that by the end, my only real complaint was simple: I wanted more.
Jehanne, the dancer at the heart of the story. Jack, her counterpart, is an older man who somehow feels less mature, an artist in his own right who matches her energy without overshadowing it. Their connection, with its striking age gap, worked surprisingly well, adding a layered tension to their bond. She seemed more mature than he did , and I loved that they came together with similar backgrounds and mutual friends. From the start, I suspected there was something unsettling about the odd grandfather, though I almost wish that element had been left more ambiguous. The readers just know from every conversation there is something off and creepy with the grandfather
The familiars deserve a mention: the cats are irresistible, the horses majestic, and together they enrich the setting in ways that words alone cannot. That setting: rolling hills, caves, moors, bridges, and the untamed beauty of Wales. Contrasts starkly with London and underscores the story’s core themes. It is more than backdrop; it is integral to the novel’s soul. Once they left London the story finally begins.
Where the book falters slightly is in its pacing. There are moments of lull. Stretches of downtime with bursts of danger. While this mirrors the centuries-long struggle woven into the lore, it also highlights the need for a longer format. With more pages, Sentier could have expanded on the lore, the creatures, and the stakes, giving the story the depth it clearly deserves.
The climax, though emotionally powerful, felt a touch anticlimactic compared to the journey leading up to it. I loved that she needed Jack and their love and devotion to one another. It wasn't just them ,it was her Granny, the familiars, and the land that was there to help . She couldn't manage it on her own; she needed her true family, not just blood.
A note to the author- Please make sure to put a trigger warning in the beginning of this novel . There are some unsettling scenes that are very triggering for those who have been through assault. Thanks!
