Evan and Nathan were inseparable, until one mistake severed their connection.

Five years later, so much has changed when a tragedy brings Nathan back into Evan’s life. While Evan remains living in their old neighborhood, working to pay off his family’s debts, Nathan is the vice president of a prestigious fraternity and part of a top college tennis team.

Nathan believes he can turn back the clock on their friendship. Evan can’t let go of the past. Broken and hurt by what he perceives as Nathan’s abandonment, Evan is hell bent on rejecting any hope of a second chance.

First Serves and Second Chances takes place at an Ivy League college and the boardwalks of New Jersey. This is an estranged friends to lovers, second chance romance with lots of hurt/comfort, college tennis, fraternity life and spice.

When I'm not trying to invent the perfect book boyfriend, I'm studying towards a graduate degree in Modern History, trying to little avail to get better at drawing and watching You've Got Mail for the millionth time!

I write spicy MM romance with special emphasis on sports, small towns and childhood sweethearts.

I love romance books with spicy scenes that don't feel detached from the couple's relationship dynamics, and when our protagonists respect and root for each other.

A part of me didn’t like the way Nate always felt inadequate and stupid around Evan but then it took me time to realize that he felt that way himself and was just projecting that on Evan.
I feel like I should state that you shouldn’t pick this book up unless you want to read the type of raw intensity like raw nitty gritty that you don’t see in the escapism that other fictional stories provide
This one was so raw I want to applaud the humanity of it but sadly that humanity is what also made me hate it because it was just too messy and to be honest with you, this book was more pain than romance. But that fact also made the love so intense when it was actually explicitly expressed.

“𝙃𝙚 𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙠𝙨 𝙪𝙥 𝙖𝙩 𝙢𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙚𝙮𝙚𝙨 𝙢𝙚𝙚𝙩. 𝙈𝙮 𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙡𝙨 𝙨𝙤 𝙩𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙄 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙗𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙗𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚.”
“𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵?” 𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘴𝘬𝘴. “𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘸𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘨?”
“𝙄 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙨𝙤 𝙢𝙪𝙘𝙝.”

I loved the intense looks, how the author describes smell and how easily it can absolutely consume you when you’re in love with someone. I even love how the Rich vs poor trope was done here, it was unique in its execution and honestly I hope to read more books that write that trope exactly like this one because it was a perfect blend of family, love and money.

The pacing could use some work tho because it lacked. Too slow and predictable at a point it was almost boring but then the excitement would hit and then the high will fade just as quickly because of the predictability too. The author also needed to take a step back on the spice, it’s not the answer to everything and I wish they spent more time re-learning each after years apart instead of fucking all the time.

All in all, it’s a good read. Average enough but worth it and I can honestly see how it’ll be a favorite for someone else…

This is a sweet, fairly low angst MM second chance romance that's super easy to read.

Evan and Nathan were childhood best friends who grew apart when the latter's mum married a wealthy man and the family moved away. Years later, Nate is immersed in university and tennis, living comfortably while Evan and his family are struggling to make ends meet. After a tragedy, Nate returns and tries to reconcile his friendship with the other man as Evan struggles with his anger, bitterness and hurt after feeling abandoned by the one friend he thought he could count on.

I really like these two as a couple. Nate is torn between his two worlds, and I so felt for him as he struggles to live up to his family's expectations while also trying to win back Evan's trust and find a place that he belongs. I loved how determined he is not to let Evan down again, and this loyalty and dedication, while exasperating to the other man, shows a lot about how genuine his feelings are. I was totally cheering him on in support of his persistence.

Poor Evan also has a lot of pressure on his shoulders and has been hiding his pain for a long time. This book focuses on the journey of him beginning to heal, in all the ways it’s needed, and we see so many different sides of him: the bitter, grumpy, grieving side and the caring, fearful side that tries to provide for his family while worrying that he’ll lose his best friend again; this fear leads him to try and push Nate away while he loses himself in precarious situations. My heart went out to him.

'Nate, the guy who threw me under the bus when we were fifteen and then left. Pretended he didn’t know me when I’d been ready to forget all about that. That guy standing in my ma’s kitchen in a designer suit isn’t my Nate. My Nate doesn’t exist anymore. That guy in there is just a frat boy in Nate’s skin.' Evan

I really appreciated the clear disparities between the wealthy and the poor in this book while showing that life isn’t always greener on the other side; people can still be lonely and not fit in even if they have money, and this is portrayed so well in terms of Nate just feeling a little lost in that world.

Supporting character-wise, I adored Evan’s mum and sister and want to mention his encouraging supportive boss. And I felt myself getting quite protective about Nate’s friend, Ben – he’s so sweet.

I’m a huge fan of Fox’s books. The characters always have an ounce of humanity and realness to them that we can all relate to in some way and they don’t feel too much like a “fantasy” person. I loved this book and as a tennis player it was amazing reading a tennis MM romance novel. I can’t wait for the rest of the series! 💕💕💕💕💕💕

I would like to start off by advocating for more sports romances with tennis players. It's not something I've read before, and I would definitely like to read more.
This was an enjoyable read for me. I really enjoyed the hurt/comfort aspect and how it was all portrayed. I loved that both Evan and Nate wanted to take care of each other. I really enjoyed getting glimpses of their history, and seeing how they got where they were friendship wise at the start of the book. I felt like they were portrayed in a way that their actions felt real and realistic. Sometimes we get 20 year old characters acting much older, but here the boys were true to their ages and I think that really helped the story. Evan and Nate are so young still, so it's no surprise that they make mistakes and they don't always chose the best course of action, but the important part is seeing them remedy those things.
I really enjoyed this second chance romance and I'm excited for the next book in the series!

This book is perfect for fans of second chance romances, friends to lovers, and a little bit of angst! In this book we follow Nate and Evan, two childhood best friends that had a falling out and haven’t spoken in years. Years later they are brought back together following the passing of Evans father.

There were so many moments in this book that i loved and it was a book where you are really really rooting for the main characters together but also rooting for them in their separate lives as well. I enjoyed almost all of the side characters in this book as well. Ben has my heart in a chokehold right now!

4 1/2 ⭐️

This book was a dichotomy between low angst and emotionally impactful - I felt intensely sorry for Evan throughout the whole novel. Nate was also a beautifully written character.

I genuinely loved this 🩷🩷🩷

Nate and Evan were once inseparable, but a reckless choice tore them apart. While Nate headed off to the Ivy League, Evan slipped into the wrong crowd. Their lives could not have turned out more differently—until tragedy forces their paths to cross again. Determined to make amends, Nate longs for a second chance between them, while Evan resists. Yet their feelings refuse to stay buried for long.

What makes the story so heartwarming is watching Evan slowly open up to Nate—hesitant at first, but eventually allowing himself to accept Nate’s love, while striving to become a better man, worthy of the trust and devotion Nate so freely offers. Nate, in turn, only wishes to stand by him and love him unconditionally.

At the beginning, I was firmly against Nate’s mother and stepfather, but by the end, I had to admit they were both endearing in their own way. Their every decision was driven by what they believed to be best for Nate’s future. Thankfully, they eventually realized that Evan was the best thing for him—just as Nate was for Evan.

The characters, their personalities, and the story itself were beautifully fleshed out. I found myself so absorbed that I never once checked how many pages were left.

A truly touching book—filled with lovable characters, a heartfelt second chance, and a love worth rooting for.

📚✨ ARC REVIEW ✨📚
First Serves and Second Chances by Emmery Fox
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 (4.5/5 stars)

Thank you to the author for providing a free ARC.

Nathan and Evan used to be best friends until a painful incident in their teens tore them apart. Five years later, after Evan experiences a devastating loss, Nathan comes back into his life. Determined to make things right, Nathan will do almost anything to prove he’s sorry… but Evan can’t seem to let go of the past.

I loved Nate and Evan as a couple. Nate’s determination to show Evan he would never hurt him again was everything. His unconditional love was exactly what Evan needed to start healing and let himself be vulnerable again. My heart absolutely broke for Evan— trying to live up to impossible expectations and carry so much grief. These two both deserved the world.

Enjoyed the intimacy and that most of the somewhat antagonistic characters weren’t cartoonishly evil, but it does seem like some of the differences in where they are in life and how they will proceed in a relationship going forward have been glossed over…

The characters weren’t totally 2-D and the language wasn’t nearly as cringey as so many other romance novels out there but it also wasn’t super deep or anything super memorable.

The ending was definitely a little too cheesey… 20 year olds kissing at a restaurant table in front of their parents is going to make me cringe, regardless if it was a hetero or same sex couple…

I was so excited to read this book! First Serves and Second Chances is the first book in a new series.

I loved this story so much! The characters are so complex and also feel so real with real struggles and problems.
Evan struggles with life in general and nothing seems to go right for him Until Nathan comes back into his life and insists on staying by his side.

Their chemistry and banter are so much fun to read while their love and trust for each other keep growing.

I’m definitely excited about the next books in this series!!!

I wanted to know a little more about how they fell in love the second time. They are still kind of strangers when they get together. More of them getting to know each other or being tense would have been great. It was cute nonetheless. The first half was particularly good. I hope Ben's story is next.

One of the things I love about Fox's writing is that they create characters that are genuine and also complex. I have read all of Fox's books and I must say this book was by far the most intense book so far. Trigger warnings are provided at the beginning of the book and they were helpful, please consider them before reading.

The MMCs are Evan and Nathan (Nate), who grew up next to each other and were childhood best friends until a fallout during their teen years. After the loss of Evan's father, the two reconnect though there is a lot of reluctance of Evan's part.

There are a lot of hard topics that are covered and Fox did a wonderful job of writing about people hurting and how that can play out sometimes. Evan is a tough character that has a lot of things to work through, but seeing him progress was a relief to me. His journey was heartbreaking and hearthealing all in one. Nate is a character who is being pulled in two different directions. There is the past with Evan that he wishes he hadn't lost, but the present where he is trying to heal with Evan. There are miscommunications they need to work through in order to move forward. I enjoyed that Fox didn't make this an easy thing. It took a lot of work for both Evan and Nate to get to a good place. It is refreshing to have an author who doesn't make the road easy. I know not everyone enjoys that, but for me it makes the end result all the better.

I enjoyed their journey and their ability to talk through things and grow together. There were several background characters that you will absolutely love. Evan's mom Theresa and sister Stacie are precious and I want everything for them. Bob, Evan's boss is a man after my own heart, he's just wonderful and I love the way he supports Evan. Nate's fraternity brother Ben is a sweetheart and I enjoyed their friendship and can't wait to have Ben's story. Nate's parents weren't my favorite, but they also aren't the worst parents I've ever read.

Overall, I would recommend this book. There are some sections that are hard to read, because they made me sad for the character, but it works out. I will read any book Fox creates, because their characters are so well written and who doesn't love a happily ever after.

When Emmery Fox announced the new series I was equally intrigued and excited I loved the Ivy League players series is one of the best I’ve read, so I couldn’t wait to dive into this new world.

First serves and second chances was a top read for me, I love everything about it but it took me by surprise because by the titile and the cover you will think is a chill read but one thing I love about Emmery Fox writing is the depth in which they write characters and stories and this is not the exception is more intense than their other stories especially because it does deal With some heavy themes so beware of the triggers. Nate and Evan were both fantastic MC’s both were dealing with so much specifically Evan after his father illness he had to take care of him and his family and had to sacrifice so much for them. He’s a little hard on Nate when they reconnect because to him is not the same Nate he used to know his a more privilege more different than him but underneath that is someone who is also also trying hard to fit in where he couldn’t be himself I loved the complexity of both characters and the growth both did throughout the story, their love story was amazing seeing how Nate did not give up on Evan how he like him and keep fighting for him was amazing to read. Overall I love every bit of their story a perfect first installment it was low angst, a bit spicy but also sweet in a way. I can’t wait for What’s next I already have my eye on some side characters if you enjoyed The Ivy League players series then definitely check this out is so good and if you haven’t already do so then do it their are some underrated gems in Emmery Fox catalog

Hell no! I think 28% is too late to have one of the MCs have on page sex with someone else. so I'm out.
This must be a trend as this type of scene with an unneeded hookup that adds nothing to the book seem to be on the rise. I do not want my MCs with anyone else unless I'm readding MM+.

Another great read by Emmery Fox and a strong start to a new series. I’ve read all of Fox’s books and genuinely loved every one. This one felt a little grittier than the others, with tougher subject matter, but it still delivered plenty of emotion and heart. It’s a wonderful childhood friends reunion turned love story, and I’m a sucker for a good “i’ve been secretly pining for years” plot.

Nate and Evan both felt well developed and were each dealing with a lot in their own worlds. They could be frustrating at times, but their reactions made sense given what they were facing. Even with some heavier themes, the story stays fairly low angst, centering on two twenty-year-olds navigating different but difficult life situations as they find their way back to each other. I loved it and can’t wait for the next one.

This was such a cute book. The author mentions in the acknowledgments that they don’t normally write this dark, but this was the perfect amount of angst.

Nate and Evan were best friends until they weren’t, separated by unfortunate circumstances and their difference in wealth. Years later, their paths cross once more, and we get to see them rebuild their friendship as it develops into something more.

I really enjoyed the aspect of rich versus poor here. How Evan’s life ended up different compared to Nate’s. How they found their way back to each other. The conflicts were simple but well thought out, definitely issues that would arise for each character based on their life experiences. I really enjoyed the reveal of what actually happened to cause them to stop communicating with each other, and seeing them rise above their differences to be happy with each other.

I’ve enjoyed this authors work in the past, and this was no different. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series. I received an advanced copy of this book and this is my honest review.
