One moment, they were young and in love. The next, Matthieu was gone. No explanation. No goodbye. Just ten years of silence, and a thousand unanswered questions.
Now Matthieu’s back. Standing across the ice. Stripes and a whistle where a jersey and a stick used to be. Love and affection, traded for resentment and grief.
They shouldn’t talk. They definitely shouldn’t touch.
He should forget how it feels to love Matthieu Bouchard. He can’t. But he should.
Matthieu Kieran Lloyd broke his heart.
He’d imagined their whole life together. But Kieran threw it away. No warning. No apology. Just ten years of silence, and a wound that never fully healed.
Now Kieran’s back. Standing on the wrong side of a line he can’t afford to cross. Wanting to talk—wanting to help. But Matthieu learned long ago how to survive alone.
The rules say this can’t happen. Their history says it’s a bad idea.
He should stay far away from Kieran Lloyd. He won’t. But he should.

i am begging this author to understand that the University of Michigan (Michigan) and Michigan State University (Michigan State or MSU) are two different institutions. rivals even! the names are not interchangeable, but either would have been fine (they both have NCAA hockey teams).
otherwise, this was good! referee romances are great and the relationship was convincing.
This is a second chance sports romance, featuring Kieran and Matthieu, and is book one in the Penalty Box Confessions series.
Ten years after a painful breakup, Kieran and Matthieu are forced back into each other’s lives on the ice. They know they should stay away, but old love and unresolved heartbreak make that impossible.
This was a great read. I really enjoyed how they reconnected, their unfinished business and pull towards each other, and the secrets around why they were apart for 10 years. Loved the ending.
Things to expect in this book are: Book 1 in series MM sports romance Second chance Referee x hockey player First love Hurt / Comfort 10 years apart Miscommunication Reconnected Spicy times Hate s*x S*x arrangement Spanking Breath play Video s*x Admit feelings Secret relationship Getting caught I choose you vibes HEA
It started very strong but it fizzled out after that. The MCs dynamics were weird and I did not enjoy them that much. The whole story seems to focus on Matty's issues and there's not much about Kieran. I thought perhaps the reason why they broke up in the past would shed some light and give me more about him, but it was just a weird misunderstanding. Overall, it was still a nice read. Unfortunately I do not care for the next book as it's not my kind of trope.
I really enjoyed this. It was an emotional read. I loved that certain situations weren't dragged out - These boys, despite making some mistakes, acted like adults - It was refreshing. My heart broke for Matthieu's situation, but Kieran's unconditional support was everything. Still hard to believe this is only the author's second published book. Definitely looking forward to what comes next.
I really liked the idea - how often do you find a sports romance about a match official? I liked how that brought ethical issues, but I didn’t feel like they were explored in any kind of depth.
I could see how the initial breakup came about - the characters’ actions and reactions made sense (though the massive consequences for one little miscommunication is always dissatisfying).
Matthieu’s family issues were really interesting and this was the highlight of the book. Unfortunately, Kieran didn’t really have his own story apart from the romance. Any Kieran scenes that weren’t related to Matthieu seemed to be setting up characters/relationships for future books. Argh, save that for the other books! Kieran needed more of a story.
I like sports romances because I’m interested in the sports and related challenges. Apart from the (briefly and easily swept under the rug) ethics issues, this was more a romance about men who happened to be athletes/officials rather than a sports romance.
And the writing… it was fine, I didn’t mind it, but it was impersonal and I never really felt I got to know/experience the main characters.
I started this book thinking it was between two hockey players (my fault as I didn’t read the blurb properly) but then I realised it was between a hockey player - Kieran and a referee - Matheu. When I first found this out I was so close to not carrying on but I thought I’d give it a chance, and I’m so glad I did as I ended up loving it.
Matheu and Kieran together were everything! Their chemistry was off the charts, and all the sweet moments were so cute too. I wish I could give Matheu a hug as reading everything he had to go through with his mother had me tearing up. I’m glad Kieran was back in his life and helped his get through a lot of it.
I did also really like Matheu’s bond with his sister Julie and I’m glad they made up towards the end and they talked after their mother had passed.
I can’t wait to see how the rest of their story goes and I’m excited to read about Ivan, Jasper and Alexei as well.
I really enjoyed reading that epilogue. Ivan was defending Kieran to Jasper (his journalist husband) and basically called Jasper a hypocrite as they were both romantically involved with another ref Alexei who also happened to be Matheu’s friend.
I luuuuv me some hockey romance and boy this one did not disappoint. In fact, the author had me hooked from page one with the full on angst-piney Matthieu Bouchard. The pining. The hotness. The Hockey. The Grumpy/ Sunshine. The Second Chance Romance. The MM romance. This one seriously checked all my boxes so probably not a big surprise that it makes it on to my top 5 book list for this year. The surprising thing is, that this is only this author's second book!
This is a well paced story with all the payoffs. Highlights for me: Two characters that are really likable and fleshed out. Seriously I loved them both. A will they/won't they back and forth plot that had me rooting for them both. Some seriously good chemistry between the MC's (and yes that is code)- the 'chemistry' scenes were sizzling NSFW. A forbidden relationship that really cannot happen so the payoff is even more toe-curlingly delicious.
If you guys love the angsty/piney/strong character deliciousness of J.J. Mulder then The Official Problem needs to be on your TBR ASAP.
I want to preface this by saying I am not a sports person but I loved Holloway's first book SO much I knew I had to read this.
GOOOOOO SPORTS!
Emotionally this book will devastate you. Matthieu is a character who I just want to hug and I'm SO glad he got another chance with Kieran. Matty is the protector, the big brother, who gives up everything for the people he loves. Kieran gets to be that for Matty. It's so wonderful and raw.
Outside of my crying the story was really good! The tension, the pining. This was a second chance done well. I loved how they didn't revert BACK to the people they were when they first met but are fully realized adults figuring out the world together now.
I think my only complaint is I wanted MORE of them. I wasn't ready for their story to end. I want to know what's next for them more than the set up for the next round of characters, I just really loved Matty!
Thank you DG Holloway for a providing a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Ah Matthieu and Kieran! I love them so much. The pinning, the chemistry, the power dynamic, the pacing, everything was well put together to make a great story!
Matthieu is a referee in the NHL and he’s doing everything he can to support his mother’s medical bills and helping his sister going to school and Paris no less. During one game, he has to officiate a game where his former lover from college is playing (because yes he’s a hockey player) and it does not go well. After that and both finding themselves working in the same arena, they reconnected..
It was an emotional read for sure. Matthieu’s family problems add an emotional layer into the romance and the support Kieran gives him throughout the story was everything you hoping for. I really loved their relationship and how Kieran support Matthieu without judgement. Their chemistry was also fire and I lovvvee the power dynamic that developed between them. I found Matthieu and Kieran were very likeable and they didn’t acted out of characters. Everything that happened was logical and in line with their personalities and what they went through. I also loved how they acted like two adults and moments where, in other books would cause a third act break up, in The official problems, the situations isn’t causing miscommunication or overly big problems.
It was an excellent read and if you like second chance, power dynamics and emotional read, this is for you!
Just finished The Official Problem @authordgholloway and I really loved it.
Matthieu is carrying way too much. He’s doing everything he can to cover his mom’s medical bills and look out for his sister, but no one’s really looking out for him. He’s stretched way thin and just trying to keep himself afloat. I wanted to give him a Mama hug.
Then Kieran walks back into his life after ten years. They were very much in love back in college but haven’t spoken since things ended out of nowhere. They both work in the NHL, Kieran is the new star of the New Jersey Inferno and Matthieu has been in New Jersey working as a referee. They try to stay away from each other but it doesn’t work. Being together again isn’t just risky. It is completely off-limits. But the love is still there and you can feel it every time they are near each other. Kieran wants him back and is willing to do whatever Matthieu needs to make it happen. Matthieu has too much to lose, if they get caught, so he fights it hard. When they finally give in it is so worth it, they were always meant to be together.
Their second chance was done really well. I liked that the drama didn’t drag or feel forced. Their relationship was full of love and care and Kieran’s support meant everything.
Hard to believe this is only the author’s second book.I love Salvaged Hearts. It’s what made me want to get the ARC. I am already excited for what comes next. That epilogue definitely has me curious.
🏒The Official Problem by is a high-heat MM hockey romance and the first book in the Penalty Box Confessions series. Perfect for fans of second chances, grumpy/sunshine dynamics, rivals to lovers, and hard-won HEAs.
It’s been a while since I’ve indulged in a juicy sports romance… and hockey of all things! A second-chance romance between an NHL player and a referee? Sounds deliciously forbidden to me. Sign me up ! Matthieu & Kieran were sweet, steamy and so perfect for each other ! The story went flawless and I love how the author crafted these 2 very different individuals finding their way (back) to each other. ( I may secretly want to hug & comfort Matthieu 🥹) This was a fun, easy read and I’m absolutely curious about the story of a certain Russian giant !
“I want your bad days and your good ones. I want to hold you when you’re hurting and laugh with you when you’re happy. I want to be the one you come home to.”🏒
I received an ARC from the author but this is my honest review.
The amount of fun I had reading this book was next level 🙌🏽 I giggled. I swooned. I squeed. I kicked my feet up. And I cried the sad tears, the heartbroken tears and the happy tears!! This is the BEST kind of book!
Matthieu and Kieran, what can I say about these two!? The angst 💔, the way they never stopped loving each other, the 2nd chance ❤️🩹, the way Kieran took care of Matthieu, the way Matthieu finally let someone take care of him, the spice🔥, holy hell the spice 🥵 I could not stop reading!!!
Also, what is it about a man asking "What do you need?" that makes me crazy!? OMG Kieran had me swooning. And Matthieu had me absolutely melting with all of his well timed "Sweethearts." 🔥🥵🔥
I won't be able to stop thinking about Matty and Kieran for a long time!! ❤️
And that ending!? *phew* I'm so excited for the rest of this series!! 🤍

Where do I start with this book? There was so much to dissect within this gorgeous story. Matthieu & Kieran’s story takes us on an emotional roller coaster. Their past broke my heart but darn those pesky miscommunications. Their present is murky due to those darn circumstances. Their future is absolutely hopeful.
The mentions of mental health & a family member suffering from a horrible disease are so important. They have helped shaped Matthieu and his view of people, relationships and the world.
My only complaint (and it’s minor) is Matthieu’s sister. She came across so much as a self-entitled brat that didn’t give a damn about Matthieu and what he’s endured, suffered & sacrificed for her. Instead she yells and gets angry and guilt trips him while she’s traipsing around Paris on his dime.
But other than her, I genuinely loved their story and the spice was *chef kiss*. The buildup of their chemistry was insane in the best way.
I was selected as an arc reader for this book and oh man this was so good i rated it a 4.5 stars and 2.5 chili peppers but this was so good i really enjoyed it. This book is a second chance romance with d/s undertones and our mmcs meet each other once again after breaking up a decade ago. Matthieu is a ref for the NHL and is struggling dealing with his mom being in a hospital because of her having dementia and his sister Julie he also has to financially support because their mom couldn’t take care of them anymore so Matthieu had to give up his dream finishing college. Kieran is our NHL veteran hockey player who has spent the last decade being in love with Matthieu a lot of this book was miscommunication and jumping the gun but that’s what made it so good ugh my poor babies were so cute the way Kieran took care of Matthieu outside the bedroom while Matthieu took care of him in the bedroom ugh it was perfect.

Review: Really enjoyed this book. The will they won't they pull they had. Kieran is a NHL player while Matthieu is a referee for the NHL. This makes seeing each other difficult due to their past. Once lovers 10 years ago, to Kieran he thought Matthiew had just upped and left with no explanation and no word. Matthieu believing that Kieran had broken his heart. Kieran now in the same town as Matthieu means seeing each other more. While Matthieu tried to avoid Kieran, Kieran is trying to do anything to help and be there for Matthieu. Their love for each other after all those years finally bring them back together but not without struggles. Don't worry they get the HEA.
Really enjoyed this hockey romance! Started out with some great angst from Matthieu & Kieran - old friends/boyfriends reunited 10 years later - a whole bunch of hurt and miscommunication hanging between them. Who doesn't love some angry spicy scenes? D.G. Holloway's writing once again captured me and the story was woven so beautifully. I loved Matty from the beginning and wanted to just wrap him up. I have such a soft spot for the broken boys. Kieran was a sweetheart and his love for Matty was so beautiful. I loved watching the evolution of their relationship. I loved the introduction of side characters and seeing glimpses into possible future stories in this series - one of which is begun in the epilogue (I'm so intrigued!). A great start to what I'm sure will be a fantastic series! I'm already anticipating the next installment!!
I love a good hockey romance, and this one completely hit the spot. Matthieu and Kieran were college sweethearts torn apart ten years ago — now they’re back in each other’s lives, only this time it’s strictly off-limits: Kieran’s an NHL player, and Matthieu’s the ref. The tension? Unreal. The chemistry? Off the charts.
This book has everything I wanted — second chances, forbidden love, grumpy/sunshine vibes, and some seriously heartfelt moments. Matthieu’s stress and sense of duty felt so real, and Kieran’s determination to win him back was pure swoon. The writing’s sharp, the pacing’s perfect, and the spice delivers.
If you like your romances full of pining, heat, and emotional payoff, The Official Problem is 100% worth the read.
Matthieu and Kieran loved each other once. Then, something happened that made Kieran flee.
They’re back in each other’s universe 10 years later, but there’s a problem. Kieran is a big shot hockey player and Matthieu is a referee. Not only that, but Matthieu is dealing with major issues in his personal life. This relationship should not happen. But it does.
Once again, DG Holloway has crafted a beautiful story of two men who love each other but have so many obstacles. It gripped the entire time.
Just like her last book, there’s a very unique ending that only made me want the next book in the series now.
I had never read a hockey romance with a ref and, man, does Matthieu make me reconsider booing the refs next time I'm watching my team. Kieran and Matthieu checked all my boxes. There was tension and banter. They denied their feelings for each other. They had a history that they needed to overcome. Hockey got in the way. They loved each other so much. I loved both characters so much. Kieran was such a sweetheart, and Matthieu needed someone unapologetically there for him no matter what - and Kieran wanted and could be that person. I loved this as a start to a new series and I can't wait to read more!
Fire and Water…Kieran, all power and destructive force. Matthieu, calm and steady like a river. The irony you’ll discover… Matthieu’s back story was sad and brutal, it made me so sad that sweet boy had to grow up the way he did. Kieran was and will always be the calm in Matthieu’s storm. The beginning was one big misunderstanding and my heart is squeezing knowing the outcome of things🥺 This is my second D.G Holloway book and I’m once again, not disappointed. The way she writes and crafts these characters makes you want to come back for more. Don’t forget to snatch this one when it releases🩷 AND the next book in the penalty box confessions coming out in 2026–The Boyfriend Clause🏒
I enjoyed reading Matthieu and Kieran's story. There were some really moving scenes between the 2 which made me go awwww. The love between them was really clear and I really liked how they were really grown up within their relationship and how they communicated with each other on a mature level. The story didn't grip me and some of the "yes sir" bits in the spice felt a bit flat and forced as there wasn't any more of that element within their relationship, which reflects in my rating. I would recommend this book and I will be checking out some more of D. G. Holloway's books!
Matthieu and Kieran… what an unforgettable journey. Their story is this beautiful tangle of love, heartbreak, healing, and a little bit of chaos thrown in for good measure. Once upon a time, they had it all love, laughter, and dreams big enough to fill an arena until one massive misunderstanding tore it all apart. Years later, fate clearly didn’t get the memo because here they are again, standing opposite one another.
The tension hums beneath every glance, every word left unsaid. The ache of what they lost still lingers, but so does that spark that never really went out. Watching them navigate old wounds, rebuild trust, and rediscover what it means to truly love again feels like watching two halves finally find their way back home. It is anything but easy these two face the toughest of challenges.
Their connection is magnetic full of tension, stubbornness, and that quiet, aching tenderness that makes you believe in second chances. And those side characters they don’t just fill the gaps, they add warmth, and depth, turning this story into something vibrant and whole.
It’s a love story that hurts a little before it heals a lot, and when it blooms, it’s pure magic.
This two went through it. Matty definitely had some obstacles and I hope he finds peace in what comes next. I hope we see more of them in the next one because it felt unfinished. Kieran was trying to do what he felt was right at the end and it felt unresolved. Loved the two of them together when they finally go through the decade long misunderstanding and admitted their true feelings.
Wow, this story was everything that you needed; drama, romance, growth, and hope. Matthieu and Kieran (fantastic character names👏🏻) conveyed such passion, while navigating the real life struggles that pull the best of us apart. And I can’t believe the foreshadowing for the next novel..Sneaky!! I can’t wait for their story.
I love a good hockey romance & this was great! This book did not disappoint & gave me everything I needed & wanted. I was hooked from the start with how great D.G Holloway's writing is. Matthieu & Kieran-heart eyes, i love them! This had everything- sports, second chances, hot chemistry, spice, pining & a great storyline. Can't wait for more of this series.
