Sounded Promising, But Didn't Deliver!

I thought I'd give this book a try after reading the synopsis. I haven't read any other books by this author and since there weren't any reviews posted on Goodreads or Amazon, I had no preconceived ideas about this book. Sometimes, you take a chance and you discover a hidden gem. Other times...not so much. Regretfully, this book fell into the latter group for me.

After reading the seemingly never-ending opening paragraph, I knew that the book was in need of some MAJOR editing. I'm not what most would consider nit-picky about this, and am no grammatical whiz. However, the frequency of these errors was overwhelming and extremely distracting. Very elementary mistakes plagued every page, such as missing/incorrect punctuation, etc. It took me about ten minutes to complete a single paragraph because I had to guess what punctuation was missing. It is amazing how a few missing commas can completely change the content and meaning of a sentence. There were times that I struggled to figure out which character was even speaking, because there was no separation or punctuation to differentiate speakers.

In addition to the lack of editing, the style left much to be desired. I felt like I was being force-fed and told explicitly what the character was feeling. If you have to spell it out like, "Jane is happy, smile," then the story probably isn't eliciting the intended emotions. That should happen naturally as the story progresses if the reader is engaged and the writing is descriptive.

The main characters are also disappointing. I couldn't hardly stand the main character, Mercedes. She came across as weak, whiny, helpless and hopeless. I think the author was attempting to portray her as a damsel in distress. However, you can't have the character describe her near-perfect physical assets with conceit in one sentence, and then try to portray her as the meek little submissive that is blissfully unaware of her sex appeal in the next sentence. It just doesn't work that way! Instead, she came off as arrogant and dumb.

I had high hopes for this story. I love a dark, twisted story and the blurb sounded right up my alley. Now, I'm just hoping that the money I spent is going to be spent on a proofreader, editor, or writing course. I don't want to crush anyone's dreams, but this book needs some serious work.
