A WHISPER IN THE DARKNESS

Eve Abernathy knows that her fiance, paranormal expert Lucien Thorpe, is terribly absentminded, but she can't quite believe that he's left her at the altar...again. Eve is ready to call the whole thing off when a note delivered to the church chills her to the bone. "I didn't forget," it says...in several frighteningly different hands--none of them Lucien's.

Soon Eve is on her way to the abandoned hotel where Lucien has been researching supernatural activity, accompanied by members of the Plummerville Ghost Society, in town for the wedding. She's not prepared to see the man she loves drained and exhausted by the spirits he'd channeled--and when things begin to go bump in the night with a vengeance, she's terrified. That the earthbound shades haunting the echoing rooms will not let Lucien rest. That she and Lucien will never escape the snowbound hotel. That their wedding--their marriage--is simply an empty dream.

My grandmother had a copy of this book, and I had the pleasure to read it years ago.

It is cheesy and overly sweet, and I love it. And, to my deep satisfaction, I learned that it was a series of books. I like the second one best. It is one of the few that makes me live through their eyes, to understand every action and to cheer for their success.

Of course, there will be a happy ending. That’s why we read these books, isn’t it? It is the way to escape reality. To believe that love will conquer all.

I enjoyed every single word.

Thank you, Linda!

This has really deceptive packaging -- there's no hint that a) it's a historical and b) it's part of a series. May try again later, if the first book comes my way. I really didn't like coming in in the middle.

The second book was just as good as the first one. A fun adventure.

### From Booklist

Two years ago Lucien Thorpe stood Eve Abernathy up at their wedding to go chasing after a ghost, but when he later came back and helped rid her home of some unwelcome spirits, Eve forgave him. After renewing their romantic relationship, the two are now ready to get married, but when Eve shows up at the church, she discovers Lucien has forgotten all about their wedding again. Several days before Lucien went off to explore the reportedly "haunted" Honeycutt Hotel, and he still hasn't returned. Eve, with several of Lucien's similarly talented professional acquaintances and assorted members of the Plummerville Ghost Society, sets off to bring her wayward groom back home, only to find, once they arrive at the hotel, that an evil presence isn't about to let anybody foolish enough to enter ever leave. Eve and Lucien, who first appeared together in *Shades of Midnight* [BKL D 15 02], continue their ghost-hunting adventures in Fallon's spooky historical that combines romance with a bit of horror. *John Charles*
