Mortician Mortimer Blackwood possesses a chilling gift: the dead whisper their final truths in the sterile silence of his morgue. When the spirit of a murdered librarian exposes a sinister soul-harvesting conspiracy at the highest levels, Mortimer is dragged away from his embalming fluids into a sprawling corporate nightmare.
Prose Maven transforms the quiet hallways of the morgue into a theatre of mystery and the macabre. Mortimer Blackwood emerges as our Virgil, a refreshingly unique hero – quiet, methodical, empathetic. The narrative is a lean, gothic beast, deftly balancing between paranormal horror and the gritty cynicism of a political thriller. The chilling opening ghost story transforms into a high-stakes corporate intrigue with global implications. At novella length, the pacing stays tight and punchy without filler, even though the shadowy “medical network” may have benefitted from additional elaboration. When given voice, the dead don’t just tell tales. They demand a reckoning.
The Mortician’s Confessional was a fun and intriguing read form the beginning to the end.. Mortimer Blackwood hears the final truths of the dead, and what starts with a murdered librarian soon spirals into corporate corruption and real danger. The paranormal angle never feels cheap. It deepens the mystery and sharpens the stakes. Moody, lean, and unsettling, this novella blends gothic chill with political intrigue. Mortimer is a quiet, steady hero you won’t forget. A gripping, original thriller. I had to get past the concept of local police and victims families sharing information with the mortician as though he were a detective, but once I reconciled with that, I just let the story entertain me.
This author always delivers. I got hooked on this author when I read The Christmas Agenda so when I crossed paths with this one I had to try it. First, the attached audio book is great and I listed to 65% of this while cleaning. Secondly the plot and the main character Mortimer is spot on. I dont want to spoil anything but once again I couldn’t have seen the end coming but it was awesome. I love the creativity and storytelling. The suspense isnt overwhelming, its the right amount of dark and mysterious for a person like me who leans more toward happy reads. 100% recommend this.
