The Scarred Duchess — The Author’s Expanded Edition

When beauty is broken and honour tested, love must learn to endure.

“Her Majesty has made me the enemy of every young lady seeking a husband and the target of every rake seeking a conquest.”

Once the most admired woman in Hertfordshire, Jane Bennet’s world shatters soon after her betrothal is announced. A visit to London to celebrate her trousseau ends in tragedy, altering not only her face but her destiny. Once envied, she becomes pitied, scorned, and—believing happiness forever lost—withdraws from society’s gaze.

Years earlier, her father, Thomas Bennet, returned from war a man haunted by the comrades who paid his ransom. Now his peace—and his family—are threatened when the man his daughter loves brings his own enemies to their door.

As old alliances return and rivalries sharpen into vengeance, Jane’s quiet battle to reclaim her spirit becomes her greatest triumph. History marked her scars, yet it was her strength that endured—captured in paint and in whispers as The Scarred Duchess.

This Expanded Edition is the author’s definitive cut—new chapters, richer histories, and scenes of passion, peril, and grace. A Pride and Prejudice reimagining that proves love endures beyond beauty, and that even the most wounded hearts may heal.

Barry S. Richman

Barry S. Richman is a military veteran whose work explores character, restraint, and moral consequence within the Regency world of Jane Austen. His lifelong engagement with Pride and Prejudice began unexpectedly in 2003, while recuperating at home after a routine medical procedure. What began as a single rereading soon became a sustained immersion; he has yet to put Austen’s world down.

Over the next two decades, Richman read thousands of Pride and Prejudice variations, developing a deep familiarity with the canon and its many interpretive traditions. His wife—whom he fondly calls his own “Jane Bennet”—watched him finish novels at a remarkable pace and eventually suggested that he write one himself. For years, he dismissed the idea, citing time, work, and responsibility. Circumstances, however, had other plans.

During the upheaval of the COVID pandemic, Richman and his wife made a decisive change in direction, restructuring their lives and long-term plans. The period proved formative, sharpening his focus on endurance, adaptation, and the quiet consequences of disruption—concerns that would come to shape his work.

Writing became both discipline and refuge. Richman began asking the questions that had long preoccupied him as a reader: What if the canon bent differently? What happens before the moment Austen shows us? What is owed, and what is endured, in silence?

From those questions emerged a sustained engagement with Austen’s world, approached not as pastiche but as serious historical and moral inquiry. Richman’s work focuses on what precedes the familiar moments of the canon, and on the private reckonings that shape character long before they are seen.

Barry S. Richman divides his time between his beloved abla’s home in Florida and his retirement home in southwestern Turkey, with his wife of more than thirty years. Together, they continue to build a life shaped by curiosity, movement, and the enduring power of Austen’s world.

Updated Edition - Second Reading

"And yet all undone...by a brother." (quote from the book)

This updated version provides the depth and answered some of the questions I had that were not in the initial rendering. I was completely captivated again! I now own both editions in paperback.

******************

“You see, our flaws and scars do not define us, but only underline our character and the beauty within us.” (quote from the book)

I have been patiently waiting for Barry Richman’s new book that is finally here! His first book, ‘Doubt Not, Cousin’ was an amazing outside-the-box portrayal of Fitzwilliam Darcy and Richard Fitzwilliam full of depth, complexity, and the shades of darkness in humanity.

“His brother did not miss an opportunity to remind him of the lack of value of a younger brother’s existence. Never mind that, he had grown accustomed to proving his worth and would not shy away from the need to do so again.” (quote from the book)

In the ‘Scarred Duchess’, we are given another outside-the-box reimagining that is multi-layered and full of intrigue as Thomas Bennet diligently works to protect his family. We are given a glimpse into the making of this Thomas Bennet and the connexions he forges with the Gardiners, Darcys, Matlocks and Lambrooks families. But all is not bright and shiny. Into each life some darkness falls.

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.
(Excerpt from She Walks in Beauty by Lord Byron)

This is also Jane Bennet’s story. Her outward beauty and grace is mirrored within her. But what happens when all that is shattered. Her confidence in herself and in society as a whole takes its toll on her. Finding her inner strength to pick up the pieces of her life is daunting. She has the support of her family which is lovingly portrayed within these pages.

There was much that I loved in this story:
1. Mr. & Mrs. Bennet – the parents we always wished for the girls
2. Mrs Goulding – aka the General
3. Reeves & Roark – raised in the Seven Dials of London but would give their life to protect those under their care but don’t cross them! (“Meryton is not the Seven Dials. Try not to cause too much of a stir, hm?”)
4. Lady Catherine de Bourgh & Mr. Collins – of great use and surprising
5. Edward Gardiner – a very interesting role
6. The Bingley’s – La, what a joke!
7. Use of original characters from his first book – slight tie-in as well

I loved this reimagining, but it doesn’t have the same intensity and depth as Mr. Richman’s debut novel. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the build-up, the intrigue, the backstories. I just wanted MORE! More of Mr. Bennet’s military time and what his relationship with his brother was and what rendered it. A bit more on the men who worked for these families that were ruthless in the execution of their duties. I’m not bloodthirsty, but what exactly made these men other than growing up in the Seven Dials. I also wanted more depth to Elizabeth. She saw the scene of her sister’s accident. She was traumatized in a different way, but you don’t get to see her struggles to come to terms with it as we do Jane’s. Are these details superfluous? Maybe, but for me they round out the characters, main and secondary, when I have the background information; especially when intrigue plays a large role in the story and when it is ‘outside-the-box’. With that being said, there will be those who want more ‘meat’ to their stories and those who want less. Finding the balance is key. You can’t please everyone.

Regardless, I highly recommend this intriguing saga from Mr. Richman. I look forward to his next book with great anticipation, as always. Bravo, Sir!

OMG! OMG! Okay, one more… OMG! 5+++ stars

SPOILER ALERT: This review may contain *** SPOILERS ***

>>Rating: Mature/Brutal: due to violence, descriptions of injuries might be too much for a young reader. This included death, destruction, mayhem, secrets, and more secrets. Many of the men had ‘special’ military skills. I’m talking serious skills… that should give you a clue.
>>Angst Level: OMG! I think my heart stopped several times. Thank goodness my pacemaker kicked in. Whew! I thought I saw the end of the universe there for a minute. I was headed for the light.
>>Source: Free copy via Booksprout: I volunteered to leave a review of my thoughts and opinions. Prologue + 52 Chapters + Epilogue.
>>Trope: [1] AU: Alternate Universe where everything is different. Note: If you have read Richman’s other book, ‘Doubt Not Cousin’, this story will not be quite so shocking. If you have not, you are in for a unique experience where men are men and don’t fool around. I’m not kidding. These people were as serious as a heart attack and I nearly had one. [2] Bennet was a second son and had been a Colonel in the Regulars. Fanny Bennet was smart as well as beautiful. Longbourn was not perfect but the daughters were raised differently. Everything was different. However, it worked. Oh, did it ever work! I loved it. A quote from the book says it all… “Prime that were.”
>>Themes: Murder, inheritance theft, debauchery, revenge, genocide… you know, the usual reasons to maim and destroy for greed.
>>Reader Advice: Start reading this early. I made the mistake of thinking I would take a peek and read just a few chapters… no, don’t even try it. I nearly met the dawn. Thank goodness I’m retired as ICNPID [I could not put it down]. This was a page-turner for sure. I have now read this twice. I will reread it.
>>Note: There were no puppies injured in this story. However, one puppy was kicked to the curb due to his infatuation with his latest ‘angel’—just saying.

The Book Blurb was most excellent in preparing me for the gist of the story. I do not want to give spoilers so will refrain from attempting an extended review. Just read it. I loved it. There were many similarities to ‘Doubt Not Cousin’ and I loved every single one. Maybe my blood-lust was up. I wanted to smash something and this story satisfied my shock and awe lust. In person, I’m gentle and peace-loving… that is until my dander gets up or I encounter atrocities. This book had all that and more. What a story!

Intriguing plot and lots of action
In Pride and Prejudice and thousands of variations, vagaries, etc., Jane Bennet is mostly renowned as a great beauty. In this primarily Bennet family saga, Jane is indeed quite beautiful, but when that beauty becomes marred due to a carriage accident—one that was meant to kill others—it begins a series of events for which revenge and retribution must be had.

This book is a very good read, with an intriguing plot and lots of action. The beginning of the story has Colonel Thomas Bennet just inheriting Longbourn and soon courting Franny Gardiner, who I was tickled to see was more like a young Elizabeth with her love of books than a ditzy Lydia.  That was a very pleasant surprise.  Readers will love this more responsible Mr. Bennet, and the not-so-flighty Mrs. Bennet, who is a good mother and very proud of all her daughters and husband. When it comes to his family, however, this ‘Colonel’ Mr. Bennet can be a dangerous man and is not to be trifled with—and he has a small army to back him if needed.

The wealth of characters in this book is grand and includes the Gardiners, Darcys, Matlocks, and others from Pride and Prejudice. Also included is the family of Jane’s love interest—who is not Bingley. Mr. Darcy Senior lives throughout the story, something I always love. Mr. Gardiner and Lord Matlock also play very key roles in the book.

I enjoyed this second offering from Barry S. Richman, whom I like a great deal. It is clear he has a superb talent for writing a JAFF variation that offers a very different premise from among the many being published most days in this crowded genre. However, having read Barry’s previous work—and also listened to the audiobook version—I noticed that the unique style that I loved and which impressed me so much in Doubt Not, Cousin, seems to have been toned down quite a lot in The Scarred Duchess. And while I am sure some editing was necessary, it feels like the process might have been a bit too thorough, aiming for perfection but losing some of Barry’s original depth and style. I find there are not enough male authors (and male readers) in JAFF, and I feel the distinctively male ‘author’ voice that made his first book so special went missing in this one to some degree.

As in Barry’s first book, be aware that this novel has a darker element and once again contains violent acts, so if you have a very squeamish nature, this read may not be for you. The Bennet/Matlock/Gardiner connection could be likened to a Regency-era Mafia, wiping out anyone who threatened family. If you read his first book, however, you can manage this one easily in that regard.

I will look forward to his next book.

Kisses only.

I recommend this book for a mature audience due to the violent nature of some scenes.

I really think the author has something with this Joe Pike type characterization of Col F. I wish he was more prevalent in the book. Bingley. Yes. Loved that.

Extraordinary

I sincerely hope Mr Richman continues to create JAFF, specifically P&P variations. This is an epic, multi-generational saga that completely re-imagines the P&P universe. Mr Bennett is Colonel Thomas Bennett, a war hero who has made many important connections in university, including the Darcys and the Matlocks. The Bennett marriage is a love match. Elizabeth and Darcy are an important component of this tale. However, the overall focus is on Jane Bennett, a beautiful young woman who experiences a tragic accident that changes her looks and her life.

Although the focus is Jane, there is so much to this book, so very many new and memorable characters as well as the familiar names from the original. Much of the appeal for me was the forthright behavior of many. In many Regency era stories, characters are so stiff and proper that little gets done and not much gets said. Not here. Opinions are spoken, villains are vanquished, and romantic feelings are acknowledged in very satisfying ways.

This story is not for the faint of heart. There is tragedy, violence, and lots of evil intent. However, the good guys prevail, with a lot that is heartwarming and uplifting. Mr Richman is a superb writer and storyteller. I can't recommend it highly enough!!

Interesting storyline with our favorite characters taking on different personalities quite nicely. Well written and developed revealing men willing to do what was necessary for their families and friends in the good verses evil underbelly of life. Well done.

Action packed

An absolutely action packed and most entertaining variation inspired by Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice by Barry S. Richman. A definite flavor of the Scarlet Pimpernel and swoonworthy heroes in this second novel by Mr. Richman. I eagerly await his next creation.

Richman has done it again. 4.5 Stars

I never knew what I was missing in my Pride and Prejudice repertoire until Barry S. Richman came along with his freshman book, Doubt Not, Cousin. Although that book is one of my all-time favorites (along with the cover), the Scarred Duchess proves that the author has a way of drawing me into his character's world.

What I loved/liked:

- Mr. Bennet, Gardiner, Roark, Reeves, and Bill. I'm discovering that I love seeing these protectors step up and act. There will be no pay-offs or negotiations from that quarter.

- I would not categorize this story as a romance, though the storyline written for the two couples was nicely done.

- I didn't want it to end.

- There are a few returning characters from Doubt Not, Cousin. Although the scene was short, I soaked in every moment of Darcy and Richard's brief interaction together. I only wish there were more.
* In my mind's eye, Kitty and Richman's Richard are a couple. The seed has already been planted.

I love a Darcy and Elizabeth-centric story, but this is not one of them. However, if you're looking for something with some meat on the bones, this is for you.

Dark deeds of the past cast long shadows into the present. Greedy men wielding their ancestral power are taught to go warily, but some strike out and injure the innocent setting ruthless representatives of Nemesis on the retribution trail. Not for the first time, I eagerly took up Barry S Richman’s P&P variation story and lost myself in a rousing good tail flavored with atmospheric overtones and hard-fought romances.

The Scarred Duchess is Barry S Richman's second Pride and Prejudice variation.
It is just as compelling as his first, Doubt Not, Cousin.

The saga spans several generations, but focuses on the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Here, Thomas Bennet is a second son and a soldier. He is smart, well connected and worldly wise. Valuable strengths when he inherits Longbourn from his elder brother.

The five Bennet daughters are raised well and protected carefully. However, Jane's betrothal to Lord Lambrook, exposes her to the violent machinations of a greedy, desperate aristocrat.

A carriage accident, engineered to kill Lord Lambrook and his father, the Earl, finds Jane instead. She survives, but is badly scarred.

The book follows both Jane's and Society's response.

A great story, full of love, angst and adventure.

Excellent

Villains abound in an alternate universe where we find many of our favorite characters, plus a few non-canon additions. Romance, intrigue, convoluted plots from villains, frightening protectors, and plenty of love bring exciting moments as we arrive at a happy ending.

Richman has done it again. *****

First, I loved this book. For some readers of reviews that’s all they want to know so as not to spoil their own reading experience. If you loved Dare not Cousin, you’ll love this one.

This is such a fascinating combination of our beloved Pride and Prejudice story and characters, changed in their growing up due to Mr Bennet’s change in background experience, AND an exciting fantasy action story with violent justice following the grim reality of just how evil society can become. Fantasy because in real life most of the justice met out upon those deserving wouldn’t happen as smoothly. But I loved it for what it is. A darn great tale.

You cannot help but adore this Jane Bennet and her patient faithful hero and suitor. Oh my. I cried. I adored this Elizabeth and this Darcy, and this Lady Catherine and this Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner. All the Bennet daughters were recognizable yet changed for the better. Even Mrs. Bennet was given a better background and better start to her life before she became Mrs. Bennet, which was such a lovely tale.

When Mr. Bennet’s forced military career ended and he takes up the mantle of landowner, he has made some very important connections, Darcy, Matlock, and a new character which changes the course of the canon story as we’re familiar with. Plus Bennet has brought home some of his men who will have a large part in the plot. As dangerous as they are I came to admire them highly.

Jane, the title character has a long tough road to travel and we’re pained for, and sad for, and proud of, and pulling for her the whole way. What a beautiful story.

Highly, highly recommended. I’m so eager for the audio book. I was trying to read this book while so much was going on and countless interruptions and I’m looking forward to listen to the story with a smoother continuity. Of course I always desire to read the book first. I’m having book withdrawal now.

Barry Richman’s P&P variations are just amazing. They are not for those who are averse to reading about violence as his characters tend to seek justice for themselves and their loved ones without pulling any punches. Let’s just say that you would not want to be on the bad side of Mr Bennet and his friends the Darcys, the Gardiners and the Matlocks. Also estimable characters and friends to the Bennets are Lady Catherine and William Collins.

This is Jane’s story. She is in the wrong place at the wrong time and suffers a grievous injury as a result. This also makes Jane, eventually, a very strong person. A weak Charles Bingley is barely a blip on her radar. Never fear…Darcy’s and Elizabeth also get their time in the sun, but Jane’s situation is primary. Although she suffers she does get her HEA in the end.

Richman’s books are not fluff. If you want a substantial story with multifaceted characters you will appreciate Richman’s style.

meh, not my cup of tea. I mostly kept reading because I was waiting for more chemistry between our leads 😂 this is definitely not for those that love traditional retelling as it is very loosely based on Austens original work. It keeps the main characters but their entire storyline and personality changes drastically….it didn’t have the same zest to me.

likely will not reread

To say this book is a version of Pride and Prejudice is a misnomer, as this fascinating, captivating book introduces the characters in absolutely unique ways. Strong characters, some violence; this novel of manners is a page turner. We see the same P&P names in completely different characterizations. A carriage accident changes the life of Jane, and Elizabeth and Darcy don’t even meet until the book is half done. My one complaint is the choppiness of the writing, short chapters that changed time and place quickly, but I would not downgrade this novel for that. I received this ARC at no cost from the author, but all opinions are my own.

Wow, this book was wonderful to read. So much happens, and there are a lot of people to keep track of - be forewarned, folks, if you're like me and often get people confused when they just pop in for a few pages and then don't show up again until later on. It's a personal problem, sigh; not a complaint with the book.

The characters were delightful; both the changes to the familiar characters and especially many of the the new characters. I totally loved the Bennet's neighbors, especially John Smyth, who was in hiding (though he himself didn't know it until much later), and was actually a viscount. Most of our usual characters are different to some extent, for example, Mr. Bennet was very different, having been a second son sent to the army after his university education was fulfilled, and was one of the best swordsmen around. After returning to England, a chance encounter allowed him to save the life of Lord Matlock, earning him a promotion to Colonel, not to mention a lifetime friendship. The elder Mr. Darcy was still alive and well. There was a lot of intrigue involving Mr. Darcy and Lord Matlock, along with Mr. Gardiner keeping track of peers who were bad people, and he loaned out money to them so that they could be ruined later ("culled") if they didn't straighten up or otherwise became a problem (read: potential threat to England's security). I thought it was funny that the main two "enforcers" were nicknamed Hammer and Anvil, how appropriate!

Of course, much of the story revolves around Jane, whose face becomes scarred after a carriage accident - that was meant to kill John Smyth, but the bad guys picked the wrong carriage. I loved how her sisters rallied around her and cared for her. Hers was a difficult path, but she was stronger for it.

The writing is excellent throughout, the dialogue fitting, including enjoyable dialects. The romance is lovely, the humor caused me to laugh, the angst needed tissues, and the outrage of evildoers caused me to exclaim in a few places.

A lot of stuff happens in this book and I loved how it all turned out. The "bad guys" got what they deserved, and the "good guys" ended up happy. The schadenfreude for the ridiculous Bingleys was rather fun (they were not previously known to the Darcys in this book).

I highly recommend this book!.

do not hesitate! read this book!

I admire this author’s work but not immediate go-to for my JAFF selections. That changed w/this book; was absolutely hooked from very beginning—didn’t once use my usual skimming tool to get to more interesting bits (typed w/contrition). Mr Richman’s story deftly kept me glued to my kindle as I read of the codependent Matlock, Darcy, Bennet, Gardiner Families grow to very influential heights w/offering insight how regency era historical events affected our characters’ trajectories. IDK if any one family could’ve succeeded as they did w/o the others’ being involved! Easy to believe how the myriad & rather complex ways Mr Bennets experiences manifested in his daughters being so very loved & *fiercely* protected w/no regard to life or liberty (you do NOT wanna be spoken of as ‘dismantled’) — how the ethereally beautiful Jane becomes eventually the Duchess herein, so cruelly affected by generational debauchery (storyline so compelling), & how she eventually rises above the judgmentally harsh Ton & her own inward limitations & becomes globally admired for her unfailing grace which we see is drafted from her father’s legacy — which lends itself to once again stabilize jolly ole England. Yes, main characters are here but, imo, distilled into what perhaps we could say is the best version of who we would want them to be (Gardiner was a revelation! A quasi-ethical businessman who believes the aristocracy s/b culled? He was considered a visionary in this book). Lady Catherine is a marvel & I adored her machinations for the families’ well-being. There are many HEAs but focus is on Jane & ODC is prevalent but not driving force. Def will read again. Like several times. This book is in my top 10 PP variations list which is astounding since Jane is the most influential character & not ODC. Thats how good this story is. TY Mr Richman. A great read.

[Wish more details how wealthy Longbourn became, our Duchess’ progeny# & how long was she married? what happened w/Georgiana?, did R Wickham actively protect George W or involved in his calumny?, what happened to the hammer/anvil? Bill? How did Jane learn of the word dismantle? Why didn’t Ashmore more actively seek out TB after capture. So many ?s…hope there’s another book in this storyline?!?]

I want to start off by saying that this author writes very well. He is very talented can put together quite a saga as the cover indicates. This story has so many different elements and characters that there is always a lot going on.

If you are looking for a book with a complex group of characters, military action and strategy and many nefarious schemes, this is a great choice. There were so many characters and plots, that I honestly had trouble at times keeping everything straight. There was a lot of action if not a lot of romance. This book is very detailed, which is important with such complex plots, but at times it can make the book drag and feel very long.

If you are looking for a great love story about our favorite P&P characters, this may not be a great choice. Darcy and Elizabeth were minor characters and did not get a lot of page time. Jane got more page time here, which I appreciated, but because there was so much going on, I wouldn’t say she was center stage. I like more romance and more Darcy when I read a book based on P&P, so in this, I was disappointed. This was definitely more of a history/military book than a romance.

The circumstances and characters are so very different that, for a P&P based book, it’s hard to recognize or make the connection. This is one of those books that I think would be better as an independent book and not based on P&P characters as the names are the only thing they have in common. I think people who enjoy this type of book would enjoy it on its own merits. Using the characters of a beloved book creates certain expectations and, while this book is well thought out and well written, doesn’t necessarily fall into what I think most people expect when reading a P&P based book.

This book deserves more than just 5 stars! Oh My Goodness the action, intrigue, and drama keep the reader captivated as they read. As soon as I finished reading this story I immediately flipped back to the beginning and reread it. Mr. Richman has quickly become one of my favorite authors with his ability to capture and captivate a reader with his storytelling. I honestly would not have minded one bit if this story would have been longer. That is not to say there was any questions left at the end of the story- there was not, the story ends and you are able to learn about each member in this cast of characters. There are a few original characters that add to the story and we met them before in Barry's first book. None of the Bennet's are like their regular selves. Lady Catherine is not like her usual self either. These variations to the characters along with Mr. Darcy Sr. being alive make this story based on rather than a variation of Pride and Prejudice. Have no fear though Elizabeth and Darcy still get their HEA. The story starts following Mr. Bennet when he was a younger man. The story progresses adding new and original characters along with characters names we know. The story moves and follows Jane as she has a traumatic accident and then we follow along her road to her own HEA. Along the way we see the cast that includes the Gardiners, Darcys, Matlock/Fitzwilliams, Bennets, and more. I know I will be rereading this wonderful story again in the future.

To uncover the mystery.

Oh my! The story just started when it started!! There was no cooking and no building up, but everything was so dense and the plot so intense!! However, the mystery remained to be uncovered.

I guess the title is true to the book that the saga is based on the characters of P&P, and ONLY the characters, or I should say only the name of the characters, instead of any other scenes or storylines. It is definitely NOT a variation sort. So, be prepared!

What is the relationship between Matlock, Darcy, Lambrook, Bennet and Gardiner? What secrets are they hiding? What are they protecting? And who are they defending against? This is a story full of information and clues and puzzles that required a clear brain to read along. It is not something simple and relaxing and sweet. It grabbed me from the beginning to end and took away my breathe some of the time and knocked me out the other half. I was so eager to find out what had been behind all these events yet could not speed up due to the complications and density of the plot.

Story contains more than three generations. The history of these families were bound together and thus the complex confusion and alliance. The past has given the present its meaning but also frustrations. HEA guaranteed.

manly story

If ever there was a Pride and Prejudice reimagining that came from a male mind, this is it! In a world of overwhelmingly feminine stories, I found it refreshing.

In this version, expect very different iterations of our heroes, and because of their actions, also of our heroines. These men are ruthless in protecting their families. The violence is mostly implied, thankfully. The subtitle does not lie; instead of a love story between Darcy and Elizabeth, this is more a tactical account of how Thomas Bennett and his cronies systematically eliminate threats to their families over the decades. I really don’t want to get on Mr Richmond’s bad side!!

It took me a few chapters to get used to the more choppy feel of the story and the very great number of new and newly-conceived characters. Apparently motherhood does not agree with Lady Catherine, Mr Collins needs early intervention, and Mr Wickham can’t be redeemed. The Bingley siblings were priceless.

There were a few editing errors, mostly dropped words that were easy to figure out, but not so many as to detract from the story. If you prefer a good tactical adventure with myriad bad guys and a gaggle of ruthless heroes over a novel full of romantic mush, this is the book for you.

The Scarred Duchess was an emotional, and highly gratifying read! I have followed the evolution of the book from day 1, and I am so proud to see the finished result.

To see Jane Bennet as the main character, and see how she goes from the gentle young woman we know from Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” to the strong and beautiful woman she becomes. The book is quite a bit darker than what you usually read, but it was gratifying to see the story lines unfold, and be introduced to the new characters and old if one is familiar with Barry Richman’s books.

The plot was daring, nerve wrecking and utterly brilliant and see all the Bennet’s so altered due to events in the story was both heartening and yet still a bit bittersweet. But I will admit that Barry’s Thomas Bennet became my new and ultimate favourite version of that character! It was eye-opening!

Drama and family dynamics are in the focus, and without a doubt the new and upcoming way to write P&P variations, to see changes and the focus on the world during the regency as never seen before. The closing pages shows it was grace, not by being a victim or a hero, but showing her own true grace that made Jane Bennet, The Scarred Duchess renowned in this book.

4.5* rounded up.
The skeleton of the story features characters from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, but it is not a variation. The well-known characters take on a new life, and the events of Austen's original do not take place. Instead, backstories from previous generations flesh out the plot.
The central figure in this story is Jane Bennet. Her family's protection extends as satellites to her core. Jane Bennet is usually not a favourite character for me, but since this Jane has different life experiences, I empathized with her trials. Elizabeth and Darcy's characters and uncomplicated romance take a back seat.

Wholly engrossing, the dialogue is well-written and captures the events vividly. HEAs abound, and the villains get their just deserts. There are many excellent writers in this genre of books, but this author's work has a unique voice and confidence in his story. I had purchased Mr Richman's debut novel, but it got lost somewhere in my TBR pile of titles. After reading this book, I'm going to start reading Doubt Not, Cousin now!

A solid 4.5* read

This is a rather different book from the majority of books in this genre and for this it should definitely be commended highly. There is real depth to the characters and the plot and no excess syrup as is all too common. The characters in this book face real issues and deal with them in the ways in which they deem best.

The author of this book is male and the story is told to a greater extent from the perspective of the male characters. This made a very enjoyable change and I enjoyed this Mr Bennet immensely.

I couldn't quite give this the full 5* as I felt the beginning was a little too scattered with the introduction of a lot of new characters without a clear link or direction between them. This is gradually unravelled as the story continue but this would have benefited from being a little smoother.

This is definitely a recommended read.

Entirely different

This is a very interesting book which uses all the P&P names but so different in character. I did enjoy this story though as it was easier to keep track of individuals and appreciate their actions. Mr Bennett is a very upstanding Colonel and Mrs Bennet sensible which I personally love. The change in Lady C and Mr Collins and their roles in the story, Mr Darcy Sr. (not deceived by Wickham) are all welcome. There is a great deal of (only referred to largely) violence which illustrates the influence and respect of our favourite families. Bingley plays only a small part with his sister Caroline which I found funny.
Whatever you think of my review I do urge you to read it.

Brilliant writing! If you wanted to turn canon Pride and Prejudice on its head, this is the novel for you. All of the characters are different. This provides a colorful story.

I did appreciate the intermingling of the relationships between the Gardiner's, Bennet's, Darcy's, and Matlock's. Lady Catherine is a hoot. There are new characters that provide depth to this saga. The villains are old and new. I do enjoy what happened to the Bingley's.

If you are looking for an exciting read, this is the book for you. It took many enjoyable hours to read with a few cups of tea.

It took me a few chapters to wrap my head around and re-orient to this alternate universe (I've been reading bad Mr Bennet, exceptionally silly or just awful Mrs Bennet JAFF of late) with such an altered back story and OOC main characters. But my goodness was this novel good (but not angst free fluff - you have been warned). I was sucked right in.
I have now realized that his first book is still on my TBR pile and must move it up in the queue.
