DARYL is fractured and fading—haunted by splintered identities, stolen power, and a reckoning he cannot possibly survive. To face the archangel Gabriel, he must somehow reject the demon Andariel’s deal and plunge into the shadowed corridors of his own mind, where Jae’el waits—the violent, god-touched persona born of trauma and locked in memory. But Gabriel is no mere enemy. He is the last true zealot of a divine order shattered by man, and tearing him down could unchain something older… and even more merciless.
SUSAN, his former therapist, is unraveling at the edges of myth and madness. As her reality fractures, she must confront the rift left inside her by Andariel and the monsters that now fill that void. The world she once trusted is slipping—and Daryl may be the thread that unravels it all. To help him, she’ll have to risk everything… even guiding him toward a power never meant for mortal hands.
One hunts vengeance with all he has left. The other fears it may cost him what little remains. With the help of former allies, they’re chasing a reckoning—but some victories come too late to matter.
J. Cornelius is the award-winning author of Remembering Demons, and, Fighting Angels, books one and two of the dark fantasy trilogy, The God Cycle. The highly original premise of the series mixes fantasy, sci-fi, and horror in unpredictable ways.
Besides books, J. Cornelius is a virus researcher (no, not corona) and the father of two beautiful girls and a boy for whom looks are too early to tell. He has also been a bartender, a food oil sommelier, a singer and composer of songs, and an embarrassingly avid dancer of dances.
He greatly enjoys making snaps and following the world of physics and cosmology. Learning about the latter two (possibly all three) has greatly influenced the writing of The God Cycle trilogy.
You can download his free God Cycle short story, 'Catching Spiders', via his website.
After reading Remembering Demons back in March this year (and loving it!!), I was so so honoured to be asked to beta read this second book in The God Cycle series.
The story dives straight back in where we left off in book one and so I'd recommend that these books be read in order - it will definitely help to follow the character progression and the storyline.
As with book 1, this book takes us on a continued crazy ride through Daryl's quest to find his power and exact his revenge.
I love that we finally get to see a much more detailed look at Daryl's backstory, even heading right the way back to his youth.
I won't give too much away, but it was great to have lots of my questions from book 1 answered here.
Having said that, this book also revealed new threads that had me mulling over some new questions too.....
This was packed with action from start to finish - so fast-paced and never a lull - but be prepared for it to totally mess with your mind along the way!
It was great to see lots of our returning characters - especially Hubble (and his world too!) (yep! I love (some) gnomes!)
This also gave us insight into what became of some of the others - those who maybe we were left wondering about in book 1!?
The writing, once again genius.
Such a complex storyline which meanders into all kinds of areas - but always comes back to make total sense.
The descriptions of the characters, creatures and places make it so easy to immerse yourself within and not want to leave!
I loved the battle scenes, I loved it all.....except I hated the ending - which left me already on tenterhooks, waiting to find out what's going to happen next for our gang!?
Almost a year ago, I read the short story "Catching Spiders" and it made my head spin by burning some unforgettable images into my brain and raising lots of questions about this world. And then I read the first book in the series in March and was thrown down a dark and twisted rabbit hole. So now that I had the lovely privilege of reading the ARC for the second book, I was prepared for another fast-paced dark and twisty ride – and the book delivered!
"Fighting Angels" does exactly what a sequel is supposed to do. We get deeper dives into Daryl's history, including his childhood, which were probably some of my favourite parts in this book; we learn more about various other characters, especially Susan the therapist and Hubble the invisible gnome; more new worlds are revealed and explored, which makes for both surreal as well as more conventional adventures; and throughout it all, the bigger picture slowly starts to be revealed as well. Though perhaps not quite as horror-y as the first book, the overall tone of the book is still quite dark. And it still contains a blend of genres, such as fantasy and sci-fi, with the latter being an element that I'm immensely curious to see fully revealed in the final book.
Silence fell between them. A comfortable thing that would break in its own time.
As in the first book, this one also plays with a lot of psychological themes, such as working through trauma, questions of identity and self-worth, and figuring oneself out. Daryl's mission of preparing to meet an old nemesis head-on forces him to confront various aspects of his past and travel through hell if he wants to reach his goal. And this motif of facing ones past and demons is played out in other characters' arcs as well to great effect, though all of these harder moments are at least somewhat balanced out by lighter moments of humour at times.
Now, the stage is set for the final book, which seems to be gearing up towards something much bigger and I have a bunch of questions and a couple of theories I'll be looking forward to seeing answered and either confirmed or disproven in the third book.
I read and enjoyed book 1 so I was honored when Cornelius asked me to read and review book 2 as well. I had a fantastic time getting lost in the pages of this one just as much as I did the first time. I love Daryl and I appreciate that book two lets us get to know him on a deeper level. I do think fighting angels is a smidge bit darker than book 1, but I feel like with what's going on ..it needed to be.
I saw another reviewer say that this book has a vibe similar to the show "Supernatural" and I think that is a great comparison. The action, the angels/demons, the humor.... it's all very on par with that show and I agree if you're a fan of that type of program you are going to love these books.
To be honest I'm not sure where we will find ourselves by the end of the next book but I can say I'm ready and excited to find out!
I was honoured to be asked by the author to be an ARC on the second book in The God Cycle trilogy and the first thing I am gonna say is WOW!
We dive right back into the story about Daryl and to Susans attempt to help him understand who he is. And just as in the first book Remembering demons I was hooked from first page.
In Fighting Angels we get a deeper understanding of why Daryl is who he is, what he is seeking, who all his friends and foes are and we get a more clear vision about the different dimensions that this trilogy contains. The attention to detail is brilliant and makes the storyline easy to follow and visualize.
This book is much darker than the first book. Don't get me wrong, the authors humor is still very present, however the more you get to know of our beloved characters in depth the darker the story gets. Not only the collective story but also their individual stories.
I personally loved the character development of Hubble and Susan - especially Susan. Her story is both heartbreaking and so powerful and I'm so happy that we got to know her better in this book. Hubble I just love! He reminds me of my granddad in a weird way. Warm, funny, loveable.
I want to praise the author for being able to make me feel what the characters is going through - we have all felt pain, happiness, regretful ect and the authors description of such in the book makes it relateable.
All though a lot of my questions from Remembering demons is answered in this book, a lot more questions is also arising.
Fighting Angels reminds me a lot of the show 'Supernatural' in regards to the mythical creatures and the fight between demons and angels. So if you love that show like I do, you will love this book (and the first book and the little short story Catching Spiders as well).
I adored Remembering Demons and was so excited for the second in the God Cycle series, Fighting Angels. I have to say this might be even better than the first book. I adore how Cornelius mixes fantasy, demonology, angelology and bit of horror to create a gripping tale that doesn’t let you go. Daryl is an amazing protagonist, flawed and all too human which means you instantly get invested in his journey. Susan is another joy of a character. I adore the complexity of them and their relationship with each other. The pacing and world building is absolutely fantastic. Of course this a ‘fantasy’ with elements of horror and even a bit of science fiction but it is written and executed in such a way that you don’t have to suspend your disbelief to believe what is happening. Cornelius weaves the fantasy into the real world of the novel in such a way that everything happens seems completely plausible and believable throughout. I have to say I adore this series and I will most certainly be looking to get a physical copy (I’ve already pre-ordered the ebook). This series has everything I love and more besides. It has the added bonus of fantastic writing, pacing and plot that only crank up the enjoyment to 11 for me. A must read. As always thank you to J. Cornelius for the advanced copy to review, my reviews are always honest and freely given.
Wow, what a continuation! This was a tremendous read. It was all go from the start, and I absolutely loved it. The cover. Can I say it's absolutely stunning? The flaming wings behind the man (I'm assuming Daryl/Jae'el) make for the most breathtaking visual. I actually gushed about the cover to my husband! It's beautiful. What an amazing design job, J. The book is written perfectly and flows beautifully. I love that the book has taken the dark tone of Remembering Demons and made it darker again. Amazing job with that. There are various settings that all work so well. I have to say that the continued world-building was beautiful. You're so good at this, J! The characters were fantastic as always. All our returning favourites and a few new faces. I adore Daryl. He makes me question reality!! Susan was much more likable in this book. I felt like we got a better understanding of her. Hubble. I love that wee gnome. Gabriel, not getting into him too much, but I do enjoy his dynamic with Jae'el and Daryl. I definitely recommend this book. I recommend the series. I stand by my statement. J is hot on Stephen King's heels. J, you're a wonderful author and I can't wait for the next and final installment of the series!!
What a book. I absolutely loved it. The pacing was fantastic - the story was engaging and exciting throughout, and the author does a phenomenal job of balancing horror and humour to create a perfect book (although the ending left me reeling!).
I have strong feelings about certain parts of this novel. Jae'el's backstory was so good - there were bits that really messed with me! - and I freaking HATE Gabriel. The way the powers of Spirit, Son and Father work is really cool. I don't think I've ever read something that uses such clear religious symbolism for its magic system, and (as a former RE teacher) I adore it.
Another thing I really enjoyed is that despite this being a fantasy novel, there was a lot of very human, very real, very mundane life stuff going on. There's plot involving a therapist which is genuinely moving, and I love it.
In conclusion: Fighting Angels is a compelling narrative with an abundance of lovable characters, where the humour balances out the darkness, and the worldbuilding is exceptional. You should read it.
I was sent the arc copy of Fighting Angels and having already read the first installment Remembering demons I couldn't wait to get back into the story and spend some time with my favourite characters (Brex and Hubble have my heart) and I wasn't disappointed. The world creation and character development that J Cornelious gives us is unmatched for me, I love the demons, angels, gnomes and wolves and how they all are entwined. I live that I fall in love with these characters and invest in them. Only a true writer can do that for their readers. This time around I enjoyed hearing about Susan's past and how it's effected her and her pushing through Andys plotting! I feel like Daryl was more relatable in this one too as he is moving through the feelings of revenge and making true connections which I enjoyed. If you are looking or an book you can't put down (read this in less then two sittings) then this is the book you need to be reading.
All in all, a brilliant second novel in The God Cycle trilogy. As by a flooded river, the readers are swallowed up by colossal battles and trippy excursions—-only surfacing for a breath at comic relief or revelations of Daryl’s deepening relationships. Flashes of alternate reality and the corridors of one's mind sift like a kaleidoscope. The characters—-fantastical, surreal, freakish, demonic, angel-ish and combinations thereof—-attempt to obliterate or support Daryl in each phantasmagoric scene, Surprisingly, they seem to know Daryl well, even as he struggles to remember his own identity. Your old friends from Remembering Demons, are now fleshing out & taking their places in a more coherent, yet still mind-bending existence. J. Cornelius has posted a bony finger to shown us the way, but has abandoned us just at the cusp of discoveries. Bring on the third novel!
I had the privilege of being arc reader on Fighting Angels and it really picks up and speeds on from where Remembering Demons left off, so you better hold on tight!
The story dives deeper into Daryl’s fractured world. It pushes the boundaries between science fiction, the supernatural, and psychology, blending them in a way that feels both unsettling and fascinating. Daryl’s past continues to haunt him, quite literally, with echoes of Gabriel and Ginny still shaping his choices and sanity. The tone is darker and more intense, but still with the sharp humor and imagination that made the first book so enjoyable. The world keeps expanding, full of strange beings and twisted realities, yet it all feels connected. Fast-paced, haunting, and thought-provoking, Fighting Angels raises the stakes and leaves you eager for the final chapter in this dark, genre-blending saga.
Fighting Angels by J. Cornelius is the second book in The God Cycle series. This one picks up straight after the first, so I’d definitely recommend reading them in order so you can follow the story and how the characters develop. The plot is pretty complex, and I found myself needing to slow down in places just to keep up with everything that was going on.
In this book, we finally get to learn more about Daryl’s backstory — even going right back to his youth, which I thought added a lot to his character. I also felt like this one answered a few questions from book one, while also opening up new things to think about, which I really liked.
It’s action-packed from start to finish and moves at a fast pace, but there are still a few lighter, humorous moments here and there to break things up. I was really glad to see Hubble return — he was my favourite in the first book — and we get a bit more of a look into his world too, which was great.
This book blew my mind out of this world and put it in a twisted magical place . In keeping with the first book and a very scientific approach to topics of magic , angels , demons and psychology and more, this book takes an even further dive into these topics that has you gripping at the core of humanity and questioning all you know . This author takes such a wide variety of truly indepth topics and collided them all in a hauntly amazing gripping tale. I cannot wait for the next and finally book of this series . I am so attached to the characters of this book and their struggles and the growth they have accomplished in this book that I have felt I have grown along with them. This book and series is something truly remarkable.
Fighting Angels is a perfect continuation of the God Cycle saga. I would say it is less strange in tone, and because of that has less humor than Remembering Demons, though still have plenty of both. Must admit I missed the humor a little, though the more serious tone matches Daryl understanding more of the world he is in, so I think more humor would have made for a more silly tone than makes sense for story. Overall it provides for a very entertaining and thoughtful read, and despite a faster pace and more action than Remembering Demons, it does not sacrifice anything in regards to character development or world building.
I had the absolute pleasure of reading of reading book 1 in this series "Remembering Demons" as part of a book tour and loved it. @author_j_cornelius kindly gave me the opportunity to read book 2 Fighting Angels as an ARC.
I love this world. This is not one for those who read straight romantasy. This is for lovers of fantasy. This books takes the idea that angels are the army of heaven and therefore can be violent and corrupted by power just the same.
Daryl and his ragtag crew take you on a rollercoaster of a journey. You will read through eyes squinted so far shut that you have to reread sections because the cost and suspence is high!
This was an amazing continuation of the story. J. Cornelius was able to keep the slight humour while continuing to have the journey feel meaningful. The stakes continued to grow and it leaves you wanting to see how the series ends.
I was just as hooked on the second installment as I was meeting the characters. There were moments that left me speechless and I couldn’t stop reading until the last page.
I’m ready for the next book now and it hurts that I have to wait.
Thanks to the author for providing this arc in exchange for my honest opinion
This is the second book in the God Cycle series, and it did not disappoint. Be mindful these are not standalone books and you must read the first book first.
There were so many great aspects of this book. But I think my favorite thing about this book is getting to know Susan more. She was probably the only character from the first book I was iffy about, but this book made her character make so much sense.
J. Cornelius did it again with the twists and turns. There were things in this book I had no idea were coming and my jaw literally dropped. I can’t wait for book 3.
This continuation of the story involved more action. I feel like we got to learn a little more about some of the main players and what their actions reveal. There were times when I thought a characters actions were headed in a certain direction but then I was completely wrong. Can’t wait to find out what’s next for Daryl.
Thanks to the author for the opportunity to arc read once again.

I didn’t think J. Cornelius could top Remembering Demons—but Fighting Angels comes out swinging and proves me wrong. (and yes I will admit I am a little judgey when it comes to the second book in any series) Also, lets remember - I do not read dark fantasy, so to get me to read and understand this is quite the accomplishment. This is dark fantasy with bite, heart, and brains. It’s fast, fearless, and absolutely refuses to play by one genre’s rules—and that’s exactly why it works. The world-building is rich and chaotic in the best way, the humor slides in at just the right moments, and the twists hit like a divine gut punch. I don’t usually vibe with fantasy, but this one hooked me hard. You have to read the first book, but trust me—you’ll be glad you did.
✨ Why you need to read this:
Read Remembering Demons first—this world builds beautifully and deserves the full ride
The author’s growth from book one to two is wild and impressive
Fantasy + horror + sci-fi + psychology done right
Immersive world-building and relentless pacing
Sharp flashes of humor that cut through the darkness perfectly
Jaw-dropping, did-that-just-happen moments
The setup for book 3 is already making me impatient
I enjoyed reading Fighting Angels by J. Cornelius, a gripping sequel in The God Cycle. Daryl’s darker journey, packed with intense battles and deeper insights into his past, Susan, and Hubble, kept me hooked. The blend of fantasy, sci-fi, and psychological twists is seamless. Excited for the next book!
Great continuation from the first book - the intriguing story of Daryl continues, captivating from the first to the last page. The second book is well-written and page-turningly exciting - even more so than the predecessor; definitely worth a read. Looking forward to the conclusion.
