This is my 32nd read of the year and it was my first 5 star read.
This will have a few minor spoilers but nothing that will destroy the read for anyone.
The cadence of this book was excellent. I have read a few other of the authors works and they are great with detail and imagery and this one did not disappoint. I have never read a story where someone said so much with so little.
Each character is given very brief moments to express themselves on the page and you glean so much just from the writing style.
The entire story is an edge of your seat ride and this isn't an action novel. The author introduces a problem and the characters are dealing with the problem the entire story. There is a tension that reminds me of those Creepshow/ Amazing Stories/ Twilight Zone but this is not that type of story.
You will become invested in the protagonist family really quick. The emotional foreshadowing in this story builds a lump in your chest to figure out how this family will survive and will they stay together.
