Control by K.T. Nolan is an erotic novella that takes us inside the world of career-obsessed Sara Douglas. The story opens with her describing her life. She considers herself a model citizen who makes the “right” decisions and is predictable. She never wanted to disappoint her parents, who felt that being successful was more important than being happy. I love her motto, “if you don’t want to be eaten by the bigger bear, you become the bigger bear,” and with that, she was able to become a successful CFO. But at what cost does hard work with no social life become taxing, and can you live like this forever and be content with being unfulfilled in other areas of your life?

Sara’s character is so meticulous, she has her planner filled out for the next two years in advance. She repeats the same routine each day: wake up, straighten her hair, pass by the same shops, restaurants, and office buildings, and go to the bakery for coffee and a cheese Danish. If she has time later, then she eats dinner with Peter. But as of late, she’s getting tired of the same routine and same “vanilla sex” as she calls it, and takeout dinners. I was surprised as I read this because, for a moment, I actually thought she was too rigid to jump outside of routine.

I love how Nolan has crafted this story because it picks up very quickly and reads like a soap opera or a juicy talk show. It’s always exciting to see someone else’s life unfolding on paper, even if it is fiction. The narrative has funny moments as well, especially when Sara is thinking to herself about how bad she thinks Molly’s kitchen remodel looks. I chuckled all the way through that paragraph. Then she starts fantasizing about the type of physical intimacy she desires, and it’s quite the opposite of what she has with Peter. He doesn’t give her the type of excitement she’s desiring, and she pretty much describes him as being submissive and agreeable about everything.

Nolan did a great job grabbing my attention. She did not waste time going through the boring details or anything insignificant. Everything about each character is worth reading. Sara and her friends all have their different reasons for being unhappy. But hers is more intriguing. One particular day, she does something surprising and outside of her morning routine. She actually notices a bookstore and goes inside. I do love how Nolan adds the sensory details that are usually true, “the odor of old furniture and that potpourri smell.” But once she’s in, there is no turning back. The curiosity bells are ringing. She notices a sign over a section in the back that says “restricted,” and when the young man comes out asking if she’s looking for anything in particular, she asks about the back section. He immediately says she has that “Corporate American Pie look” and that what’s back there is not for her. This begins to set the tone for Sara and her story of exploration, as she enters the “restricted” zone that changes her life forever, thanks to Alex.

After meeting Alex at the bookstore and taking him up on his book recommendations, she could not stop thinking about him. Ironically, he ends up in the coffee shop where she always gets her coffee and Danish, and he pays for her tab. This is where we really get to know Alex’s character. He seems like he knows what he wants, and he cuts to the chase and asks her out to dinner or to just hang out. She’s like a schoolgirl thinking about meeting up with him all week and finding a way to break up with Peter, which actually turned out to be mutual. Then we get into the meet-up. Nolan knows exactly where and when to add the atmospheric descriptions and sensory details from Sara hearing the hum of the city and cars hunking, and distant laughter. But this particular day, she isn’t worried about what she has on or thinking about tasks to do at work. She collides with him because she’s distracted, but this is where I hold my breath and brace for the excitement I can feel coming. Alex is a scrumptious meal ticket to the excitement he tells her she wants, and he names the time and place and tells her to wear red. My heart leaped for her.

Alex has definitely emerged as the shining star in this narrative as he takes full rein and introduces Sara to a new way to unwind. He doesn’t want anything serious and lays it all on the table. But it doesn’t make her run away. I think she’s more curious and intrigued by this new form of excitement. This book is definitely not for the faint of heart. It’s racy and has wildly sensual moments. The one thing Alex teaches Sara is how to hold back. He notices that she’s used to control, and he leans into his sensual side to bring out another side to her that she didn’t know existed. The rest of the narrative is very sensual as Sara still tries to hold on to some form of control, but Alex is much too skilled to allow her that. Nolan also takes extra care to show the sharp contrast between Sara’s mundane corporate life and the world she has with Alex, who is dominant and makes her dependent. He has become her addiction, her drug. But it may leave some readers wondering if this has gone from igniting excitement Sara has never had before and crossed into dangerous territory. She’s different, and her friends are concerned because she looks different and she’s not acting like herself.

The story begins to take a turn that I think will have every reader gasping and fainting. But the storyline is so juicy, I could not put it down. I had to know what I didn’t know. Nolan has mastered the great skill of luring readers into the restricted zone. I had to keep reading, and it was well worth it, especially when Sara finds out the truth about Alex. Readers may even be satisfied with the ending.

Readers who enjoy erotic fiction in similar works, such as Obedience Games by Vivian Hale or Marina Belle’s Terms of Submission, will equally enjoy Control. There are trigger warnings that may not be for everyone, such as violent and vulgar language, physical abuse, and psychological abuse. But for readers who enjoy the art of erotic fiction, they may find this an enticing read.

Sublime! A feast for all the senses… even ones you were not expecting!

The all too fitting title says it all. It is about control---taking it and having it taken away. It explores the ecstasy, dread, fear, confusion and pleasure of the dark path usually only travelled in secret. It was to this reader reminiscent of Brett Easton Ellis’ American Psycho at times. From the painfully dull routine drudgery of everyday life to the terrifying excitement secret games of lust and power. The story is vividly erotic but with a determined dominating purpose. It leaves the reader feeling as used and abused and helpless as the main character, in the best way. The author does justice to the subject matter at hand weaving in details not well known or appreciated by the general public. For sure an author well worth following.

I wanted to love it... **I will preface by saying darker genres are not my normal read**

It starts out so good. She gets a juicy new relationship! shes taking control of what she doesn't like in her life while submitting to her new love interest.. but towards the end mmc switches from swoony to scary, fmc goes into a shame spiral, then the whole book ends abruptly like someone tore it in half. It showed alot of detail surrounding the fmc from her annoying friends to her busy job and vanilla ex.. but there's very little detail given about the mmc. his character isn't nearly as well developed. im not sure if that was intentional to make him mysterious or just an oversight.

This novella grabbed me immediately.
We are introduced to Sarah who yearns for more in life. Her life is very controlled by her corporate job, home life is very bland and her sex life very vanilla. A chance meeting of Alex turns her life into something exciting but at what cost? The psychological aspects will have you gasping and just when you think you have figured it out it takes a darker turn.
There is plenty of spice in Control.

Control is a good, quick read. Structurally it’s very sound, good grammar, good, logical progression, and no jarring pov changes. Gets a bit ‘listy’ in parts. Decent character arc for the protagonist. Antagonist is underdeveloped. Overall it’s an enjoyable, quick read.

Control is a gripping erotic psychological thriller that explores power, vulnerability, and obsession with sharp precision. Sara Douglas is a compelling protagonist—strong, ambitious, and meticulously guarded—making her unraveling all the more captivating. The novella’s tight pacing and emotional intensity create a story that is both seductive and deeply unsettling.
