INTO THE DARKNESS - THE EPIC CONCLUSION OF NEWS FROM THE FALLOUT IS HERE! In this final chapter, it's an epic, one-on-one collision with the evil of General McCoy as Otis and Old Joe's survivors attempt an escape through the pitch-black tunnel networks beneath the abandoned silver mining town of Dead Water, Nevada.
A pretty satisfying conclusion to a distinctive book - nothing else looks or feels like this book, from the art to the design. There are some harrowing sequences that take full effect of the grayscale, shadowy art style, with the nearly dark scene in the tunnel a highlight.
I was a bit worried but I have to admit that was a pretty solid ending. I especially enjoyed the characterization of the main solider we have been following since the start. The start of this issue confirms what a lot of people have been picking up on from the hints dropped in the issues, that the main character is in fact Black and has spent a lot of his time facing discrimination growing up in Oklahoma in the 40s. We start the issue with part of that as he was hiding from some men who were hunting him for something he did, I’m sure it wasn’t actually him, but we see in action the thing that has kept him alive this entire series. The idea that he needs to be quick on his feet because something is always going to be coming for him. As we jump back to the modern day with our group of three in the tunnel heading towards Las Vegas, we check in on the cowboy and his Gatling gun trying to take down the entire horde. Unfortunately his gun begins to jam and all he is left with is a few revolvers and a gas mask to fend off from them, but this is not like the last time he faced them. They are ready this time and they are already spreading a rate that even of he took them down now it wouldn’t matter. The ravens are the carriers and using them they begin to swarm the cowboy and rip him to shreds.
One thing I really like this issue is the use of darkness and dialogue in the cave system. Even though we can’t see anyone we know exactly who is talking each time. As the three are continuing down the tunnel, Joe ends up taking a break and promising them he would catch up due to his leg. But as they go on Nance begins to hear a sound. I love how the dialogue works with the sound, one character tells the other to keep quiet to listen for it and then the sound works into the dialogue order to immediately give them a chance to respond to it. Nance is starting to freak out and shoots towards the noise, the darkness lights up with a bang and as she shoots again we see the shadows of the creatures and the now changed Joe. So our main character does what he does best…he runs to stay alive. He doesn’t stop until he sees the exit and steps into the light only to look back and realize Nance wasn’t with him and she is now lost. As he continues in he stumbles across a radio station. There is no one there and as he goes inside he turns on the system to communicate. He has no idea if anyone can hear him, but it doesn’t matter he has to warn about what’s coming. He begins to talk about his experiences and what he’s seen, how it started as a dropped bomb that didn’t go as planned, and his it began to rain red snow that began to change the others at the base and is now going for everyone. He warns them to watch the skies and kill any Raven they see, he warns them of the man in charge who lack honor and principal…and has now caught up to them. In a final word he tells everyone to lock their doors and close their windows…”this is news from the fallout.” Our main character is done running. We don’t see what happens to the character, all we see is someone turn the dial on their radio to change from such a strange program as the ravens sour in from the distance. But we do find out what happens from the 3 pages of top secret documents from the department of defense that trail this issue. Turns out our main character died fighting and was found literally ripped apart at the radio station. The contagion spread to a lot of western states, including Nevada, Arizona, California, Utah, and some of Colorado before the government was able to start shutting it down. The protocol for dealing with it is to execute anyone who shows signs and burn their body. One thing this document also makes note of is how preventable this was, over 2000 people died and if they would of heeded recommendations to take the commander who started all of this out of service, then it never would of happened. It also makes note that if any outbreak was to set out again, it could spell the end for mankind.

A good ending that fit the theme of this story. There were several pitch black pages that created a great sense of tension. There were some classified documents at the end that gives some closure to the story. This was a fun story that stayed on track and was focused from beginning to end.
I really liked this series and I am interested in these types of stories and art style, but the ending was awful. I hope there's a sequel or a follow up to this series because I feel some type of way with that kind of ending.
