Cozy Questing #1

Wizards & Weavers

Rate this book
Braiden Beadle’s craft shop is on its last legs, even though it’s filled with the plushest yarns and the finest fabrics. Nobody cares for crafts anymore, not since the dungeon appeared outside Weathervale. Adventurers have swarmed the seaside city, eager to discover the dungeon’s treasures… and not a single one of them needs any knitting needles.

Desperate to save his shop, Braiden prepares to brave the mysterious dungeon for its riches. But Augustin Arcosa, the Wizard of Weathervale, has deemed the dungeon a threat to his hometown. He wants to seal it away forever.

Armed with only his wits and his impractical magic of weaving, Braiden must convince the haughty and annoyingly handsome wizard that the dungeon poses no danger to Weathervale. And there’s only one way to be certain: they must explore its depths together.

Can an unlikely adventurer and a windbag wizard find common ground underground? Join Braiden, Augustin, and an evolving party of quirky colleagues as they embark on the cozy quest of a lifetime. A humorous, heartwarming fantasy adventure perfect for fans of Legends & Lattes, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Terry Pratchett.

Hi, I'm Nazri, a Filipino-Malaysian author based in California. I’m trilingual, but I really only write in English. I can also speak just enough Sindarin and Valyrian to impress absolutely no one. My urban fantasy novels focus on realistic heroes who use wits, style, and their wildly unpredictable magic to (try) and save the day. Think sass and class, while kicking ass.

My influences come from horror and fantasy: HP Lovecraft, Anne Rice, George R.R. Martin, Chuck Palahniuk, Terry Pratchett, and Neil Gaiman. Growing up I was shaped by the Blood Sword, Fighting Fantasy, Lone Wolf, and Grey Star game book universes. I'm also inspired by video games, specifically the Castlevania, Final Fantasy, and Persona series.

TL;DR: I'm a huge nerd. And yes, that's my real hair. I try to donate it to the American Cancer Society as often as I can. Also, have you heard? You can get a free book at www.NazriNoor.com.

I bought the audio from the author's website. It's performed by a new-to-me narrator, Jon Vertullo. So far I'm enjoying his style.

A / 5 stars for the narration, C+/ 3.5 for the story.

I admit to being a bit disappointed when I learned Nazri Noor’s new series would be  ‘cosy fantasy’; cosies seem to be everywhere right now but I’m not a big fan – I like a bit of tension and grit (and yes, some sexytimes) in my books, so I wasn’t sure I’d be picking it up.  But I enjoyed the author’s Arcane Hearts and Wild Hearts m/m fantasy adventure/romance series in audio (he uses excellent narrators), so I decided to give the first Cozy Questing book, Wizards & Weavers, a go – Mr. Noor’s worldbuilding is always excellent and his stories are strongly plotted with likeable characters and an ensemble cast with good camaraderie and found-family vibes. But even though those things are all present in this book, I struggled to get into it and there’s something missing overall.

Braiden Beadle is struggling to keep his craft shop afloat. Ever since the appearance of the mysterious ‘dungeon’ just outside the small seaside town of Weathervale where he lives, the place has been flooded with adventurers and treasure seekers and nobody is interested in buying cosy scarves and knitwear any more. Reasoning that ‘if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em’, Braiden decides to try his luck in the dungeon – after all, people are searching for treasure, so why shouldn’t he do the same, make his fortune and use it to save the shop? But then Augustin Acosta, the Wizard of Weathervale (Braiden had no idea the town even had a wizard!) appears suddenly to announce that the dungeon poses a threat to the town and that he is going to seal it.

Braiden isn’t impressed. Even though his shop is struggling, business everywhere else in Weathervale is booming as a result of the influx of tourists – but his protests fall on deaf ears. Acosta is set on closing the dungeon to prevent Weathervale being overrun by an army of undead or demons or something else equally bloodthirsty.

But Braiden isn’t going to give up easily. As the wizard marches away along the street, Braiden catches up with him to try to persuade him to change his mind, surprised when they end up at the offices of the town council and then in the council chamber facing the wily Elder Orora, merchant, trader and, legend has it, former pirate – and Acosta’s grandmother. She isn’t pleased about her grandson’s plan to close the dungeon either; she recognises its importance to the town’s prosperity, and agrees with Braiden that its closure will benefit no-one. When Augustin has departed, she offers Braiden a deal – she’ll waive the back rent he owes if he will accompany her grandson into the dungeon and prevent him from sealing it.

Now all Braiden has to do is find a suitable travelling companion, find the wizard, and persuade him to travel into the dungeon with them.

As I’ve said, Wizards & Weavers has a lot going for it – the worldbuilding is terrific, the secondary characters are well-written, and Braiden is a likeable, warm-hearted person with a dry sense of humour who only wants the best for everyone. I was pleased to see the beginning of a new, chosen, family growing around him – he’s lonely and obviously misses his late grandmother a great deal; I liked the way his weaving magic is incorporated into the story and enjoyed listening to him becoming more confident in his magical abilities, realising it has many more uses than he’d previously thought.

BUT despite all the good stuff - and perhaps it’s down to my antipathy to 'cosy' anything - I struggled with the book until about two-thirds of the way through; the pace is glacial at times (I swear there is one chapter devoted to making omelettes and scrambled eggs and nothing else!) and had I not accepted a review copy, I might have set it aside to come back to later or even DNF’d. Also, if you’re looking for romance, you won’t find much of it here, because this one looks set to be a very slow-burn. Braiden is obviously smitten with the handsome Augustin, (and bless him, he doesn’t understand why the magical elven house won’t build an extra bedroom so they won't have to share!) and I’m always up for a good slow-burn romance. Mind you, in this book it’s more like a no-burn (which was a bit disappointing) – the chemistry is there but pretty low-key, and while Braiden and Augustin do spend a fair bit of time together on the page, they’re rarely alone. But the story really comes to life in that final third, which is very good indeed - and which pretty much saved the book for me.

And on that subject – the book’s real saving grace is new-to-me narrator Jon Vertullo, who delivers an outstanding, virtuoso performance. His pacing is spot on, his enunciation is clear, his performance is expressive and well nuanced, and he has an incredible range of character voices, finding a clear and distinctive way to voice every cast member in the story AND for the narrative portions of the story as well. I especially loved his interpretation of Bones – who sounds uncannily like Rizzo the Rat! – and his Shatner-esque delivery of Warren’s dialogue is a hoot. His portrayals of Braiden and Augustus are excellent, too; Braiden speaks with warmth and good-humour, and Augustus has just the right amount of swagger and confidence.

Wizards & Weavers was, then, a bit of a mixed bag for me, although the fantastic narration was definitely an incentive to keep listening! I don’t know how many books are planned for the series, but I think I’m going to be back for the second book in audio – Jon Vertullo’s performance is sure to be more than worth the price of admission, and I’ll have my fingers crossed for a bit more depth and dimension to the characters, more sprightly pacing… and a tad more romance.

I love Nazri Noors writing, it’s always a top read for me. I love the little humour injections and the characters. I really liked Augustin actually, with his outwardly haughty character and how he irks Braiden. If you’ve ever read Nazri’s Wild Hearts series.. he does remind me in some ways of Sylvain.

Braiden and all of his missing of his grandmother really touched me and I had many emotional moments when he reminisced about his moments with her; I really felt his need for connection through this first book.

As always, I’m waiting (im)patiently for the next instalment! Looking forward to re-enjoying this on audio too.

Wizards & Weavers is the first book in the new Cozy Questing series by Nazri Noor. This is the story of Braiden and Augustin. Braiden owns a craft shop that is not getting any business because a dungeon suddenly appeared outside of town. To save his shop he decides to venture into the dungeon for it's riches. Augustin on the other hand wants the dungeon sealed because he feels it's a dangerous. Braiden and Augustin decide to explore the dungeon together. I loved the characters and world building in this book. This is a fun story about not giving up. I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series. I would definitely recommend this book.

Braiden Beadle’s beloved craft shop is fading fast, overshadowed by the sudden appearance of a dungeon outside the seaside city of Weathervale. With adventurers flooding in for treasure and glory, no one’s interested in yarn or knitting needles anymore. Desperate to save his livelihood, Braiden decides to venture into the dungeon himself. But Augustin Arcosa, the powerful and aloof Wizard of Weathervale, sees the dungeon as a threat and wants it sealed. Braiden, armed only with his quirky weaving magic and stubborn determination, must convince Augustin otherwise. Their only option? Explore the dungeon together. As they descend into its depths, sparks fly—between danger, magic, and a growing attraction neither expected.

I loved this story which was a whimsical quest of courage, creativity, and unexpected connection. I loved Braiden's weaving magic which was a clever metaphor for resilience and transformation. The supporting cast of characters were special and I look forward to seeing more of them in the next book in the series. Well written, I could feel Braiden's despair at the prospect of losing his family store. This was an MM story.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

First in series (Cozy Questing). Fantasy. Found family. Slow burn/no burn. Single POV.

Braiden is struggling to keep his family crafting shop afloat, but with the recent influx of adventurers drawn to a newly exposed Dungeon, there is no market for cozy sweaters and scarves. Partly intended, but kind of not, Braiden is whisked along to investigate the dangers and possible rewards that lie within the Dungeon with Augustin the Wizard of Weathervale, and Braiden’s new elf friend Elyssandra comes along as well.

This story is mostly about a group of unlikely friends going on a journey together, hoping that the quest will bring them rewards and finding loyalty and companionship along the way. There are only peeks at a budding romance, with mostly banter between Augustin and Braiden, plenty of world building, and bits of character development. Overall, an enjoyable romp with a sprinkle of danger and the possibility of future adventures for the enterprising group.

Such a cute, lighthearted read! Has lots of heart, with the overwhelming message of finding where you belong and really, making that space for yourself when you are discontent with where you are.

The characters and world are lovely. I don't typically read cozy fantasy, so I found myself getting caught up in how some situation would go horribly or what bad thing would happen, only for it to resolve nicely, sometimes even humorously. And that is in no way a slight on this book - just me reminding myself what I was reading. I found that this book didn't take itself too seriously. Not in a way that didn't think the message/characters were important, but in a fun way that made the reading experience enjoyable. And I LOVED the SLOW romance subplot... mostly because it was slow and sweet and felt genuine.

I'm really looking forward to the next book and seeing what this band of misfits get up to next!

A delightful cozy fantasy

Nazri Noor has a magical way with his characters and worlds. Wizards and Weavers is a wonderful fantasy cosy set in a small town atmosphere, with quite the cast of characters. We meet Beadle - struggling to keep his sewing shop in business - particularly as he inherited it from his grandmother. He meets up with the other main character - a wizard, Augustin, who is quite the narcissist. He seems to gain as much magical power from boot licking compliments as he does from the elements. These two despise each other, which can only mean one thing - they're fated to be togetherm right? Well, you'll have to read it to find out. We meet a great cast of characters through their mine delving to seal off demons and keep the town safe. And, um, maybe make a few bucks in the process. This is a world of beautifully enchanted characters that for a truly bonded gang of magical misfits. You'll really enjoy this read!

This was cute and the conceptualization of the magic in this world is excellent as I've come to expect from Noor, but it's not a stellar outing for him.

The whole D&D-Game-as-book thing seems to be constraining and a bit too generic for his imagination. Too many of the characters are kinda flat, and certain traits - for instance a certain character has never-explained (or really explored) sticky fingers, and it comes off a bit 'well we have to have a rogue/thief so I guess add this' than a helpful part of the story.

I liked the two main guys, and hope the next book isn't held in the straitjacket (pun very much intended, sorrynotsorry) of an RPG and can explore the interesting bits of this world.

It’s been a while since I’ve read this author, so I was extremely happy to dive right back into his books. While I’m not a huge fan of books that take place in a past-like setting, this first book still wormed its way into my heart. Braiden is such a warm-hearted character, who really only wants the best for everyone. He finds his courage in this, and he meets what I think will be lifelong friends along the way. This can be read by just about all ages as it’s a fun, simple, and well-written tale. Give it a try especially if you like this this genre. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Sometimes slow, always cute and cozy, Wizards and Weavers makes a good point - if your party contains two wizards, one of them better be a full support wizard.

All jokes aside, I wanted a cute cozy adventuring novel with a happy end and it's exactly what I got. I docked a star for the oftentimes slow pacing (and then too many things revealed at once in the end) and because I kind of expected there to be a bit more romance. Still, seeing as it's only the first of many (?) novels in a series, I'm sure there will be more kisses in the next book(s).

I loved the story. Braiden has some magic and owns a craft shop that his grandmother left him. One day a dungeon showed up and adventurers showed up wanting to explore. Unfortunately his shop was not doing well and he decided that he would save his shop by visiting the dungeon. Along the way he meets Elyssandra, an elf, who he feeds. We also get to meet Augustin, the wind wizard who has been on many adventures and wants to seal the dungeon. Told in Braiden’s point of view, it tells the tale of how they went exploring and meeting new people along the way while saving everyone. Cannot wait to read more in this world.

My reviews are my own. If you liked this book, I’m glad you enjoyed it. If not, I respect your opinion.  This is merely my opinion, so let's keep it courteous.

The story is fun, but I had an issue with the immature nature of the MC's since they are supposed to be 30/25 respectively. Therefore, the story feels childish. It is also a bit repetitive. That said, it was pretty entertaining, and looking forward to the next book in the series!

On to my next adventure, Happy Readings!!!

4/5. Cute, but I genuinely hope more depth and dimension are added in the following installments. I’m all for cosy, sweet fantasy that’s light and easy-breezy, but at least give me the details that are important for various developmental aspects while I’m entangled in the fluff. I feel like we didn’t get enough in places where it was needed. I’ll keep book two in mind and watch for it, because this was fun and unserious and for that I enjoyed it.

I have done every craft mentioned in this book, and I am not convinced the author has done any of them at all. It kept pulling me out of the narrative. Weaving and knitting aren't the same thing, you cannot frog knitting like you can with crochet, literally no one is keeping partial knitting projects in a tin with sewing supplies, ffs. If you're going to go all in on cosy crafts, at least make sure you're doing it correctly.

Wonderful New World

I love this story. From the very beginning I felt a connection with Braiden and special magic.
The characters are amazing and their interactions authentic. Lots of humor too.
Another amazing world for us to explore. Thank you Nazri for taking us on amazing voyages to these new worlds.

This is a fantastic series opener. I really enjoyed Braiden's journey. He needs to save his shop and he's willing to take on a dungeon to do it. I loved his determination and watching him discover his own inner strength. A fun cozy adventure, I'm looking forward to reading more of this series.

Very cute, fun DND adventure. The romance is more of a minor subplot tho keep that in mind...Thats why it was mot a 5 star read for me. Was more looking for a romance focused story. But it hits the found family, low stakes, fun dnd vibes for sure!

This is the start of a new series, and it's different from the other series in that hero is not some confident young buck. Braiden is a nice young magic weaver who likes to knit and owns a failing craft/knitting shop. He's sweet, wanting to make the shop succeed.
When he's forced to explore a dungeon, he meets a motley crew of different characters and together they begin a quest to explore said dungeon. He has to work with Augustin, a powerful wizard, an elf and others. As they journey, Braiden finds he has a lot more courage and strength of will than he thought.
Enjoyed the world building, the characters. Looking forward to the next adventure!

This was a fun adventure tale. If you like the D and D style this is totally the books for you. A merry band of adventures a dark cave to explore... we sort of. OK so, not eve8is quite to merry with everyone in the band. I have to admit, I wanted to smack Augustine more than once but just as he does for Braid, he grew on me. I am intrigued to see what adventures they will have next.

If you like Delicious in Dungeon, you'll like this novel.

Each characters had their unique personnality and that was the strong point of the story. They were very fun and meshed well together.

The plot was interesting enough, quite simple but it did the trick for me.
I loved the slow burn between the MC and his love interest, Augustin. From not-quite-ennemies to friends, I kept rooting for little moments between them.

This book was the cozy adventure I didn't realize I needed. I have read other Nazri Noor books so I went in with certain expectations, but this one blew them out of the water. I can't wait for the sequel.
